Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: plusol - Hailstorm

plusol shouldn't be a name you're unfamiliar with at this point. I've played his tracks in a handful of episodes and showcased his incredible catalog in the January edition FUXWITHIT's Focus Five feature here. Working in a unique sphere of sound, Calvin Jung combines crunchy chiptune samples with all sorts of organic instrumentation, primarily the piano, but often a larger, almost orchestral swath.

Last year, he captured the attention of Anthony Fantano with "Entity" and recently reignited a nostalgia for Zedd's "Clarity" that I didn't know I had. This past Friday he released "Hailstorm," what I've learned is the first taste of forthcoming album Lineage. Labelled as #hallucinations, this new production showcases a dizzying array of colours through the oppositional play of the twinkling piano and glitchy, raucous electro crashes. An excellent example of plusol's combination of power and poise, "Hailstorm" ought to instantly whet the appetite for Lineage. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: FUXWITHIT 6 Year Anniversary Party

While I blog on my own here, I also write for my friends over at FUXWITHIT every month or so. When it comes to underground artists making bass, experimental, trap, and more there's no better outlet. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Greg Gow - People Mover EP

Veteran Toronto DJ and producer Greg Gow has been moving people for the better part of two decades, most recently with the three track People Mover EP which came out Monday on Swedish imprint Truesoul. Not only will you hear a cut from said EP on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, you can also see him live in person as part of CODA's 5 Year Anniversary Saturday with Carl Craig, Mike Gibbs and Jackie Spade (RSVP/Tickets). Enlightened Listening for August 31

It's the last weekend of the summer and the beats just keep coming. The search for quality content seems to be at its easiest point, as a stroll through Soundcloud (with repost blocker) helps me hone in on my favourite artists. UGK ft. OutKast - International Players Anthem (Ticklish & Qnoe Remix)

Last month I stumbled upon Berlin bootleg boss Ticklish. It was one of those magic moments where one great track led to another. I enjoyed each more than the last, so much so that I included him as one of my picks in FUXWITHIT's monthly feature called "Focus Five." Read that specific addition here.

Today marks Ticklish's first release since said feature. Teaming up with fellow German Qnoe, he brought his trademark touch to the classic 2007 crunk cut "International Players Anthem." The duo have pinpointed the Willie Hutch sample of "I Choose You" bringing it to the fore, letting its majesty lead though additional trap inspired percussion. The extra oomph and back beat groove replace much of OutKast's lyrics, letting the horns swing you back and forth as though reclining on a hammock. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Stickybuds - Take A Stand

Sonic diversity is a point of pride on Bump In The Hump, so when an artist releases an album that includes funk, reggae, DnB, glitch hop and more, we pay attention. That's the case with Kelowna's Stickybuds and his debut full length Take A Stand. The theme of rebellion and the fight for freedom runs strong through the 9 track arc whether literally, through Burro Banton, Blackout JA, and Rubi Dan or figuratively, through the unwillingness to be nailed down to one genre. Get in on the uprising with Take A Stand via Westwood Recordings and catch a track on Bump In The Hump tonight from 7-9 EDT!Of course the diversity continues with disco, house, wave, bass, club, trap, midtempo, and more. But there's also another strong theme, that of exploration and discovery. Bump In The Hump rarely goes a week without debuting a new artist, but this week is chalk full. Daktyl - Oscillate (ft. Janelle Kroll)

Going back a few years, there was no one that blew my mind more than the UK's Daktyl. His production is and was always pristine. His sound and style unlike any - in my mind true 'future bass' although that definition/connotation has since changed. Take his early remixes of Wonderful Humans and fwdslxsh as examples. Later his Cyclical showcased his incredible abilities as an original artist, and perhaps this is where his genius and versatility shines most: "Mind," live with frequent collaborator JJ Draper.

Following this Daktyl went nearly radio silent, leaving me and others waiting with baited breath for essentially all of 2016 and a good portion of 2017. His return was then marked by the tellingly titled EP, The Act Of Hesitation. That release seemed to be twofold, in that it opened the floodgates for a more steady stream of music, whether it be his Dusk+Dawn mixes, recent Riyaaz EP, and even more fresh flurry of singles, including "Weather," and today's "Oscillate." If Daktyl's story interests you, serendipity has struck as my friends at FUXWITHIT just released an interview with him today, read here.Maybe it's my love for steel pans, but I was hooked on "Oscillate" in seconds. Janelle Kroll's and Daktyl's treatment of them is (like the rest of the production) brilliantly beautiful. The whole track just seems to shimmer, at least until the bass and groove kicks in sending your senses spiraling. As well as the movement, play and progression combine as one wondrous weapon, it is the little things that make "Oscillate" so spectacular. The one off, varying percussive hits; sneaky, backing strings; and bleepy effects, all add an undeniable allure and sparkling sheen. Silva - Diffuse

At the moment, there aren't many names that I get more excited about seeing new music from than Australian producer Silva. In February I wrote about his explosive track "Escape," and just this past weekend he was one of my picks in a new monthly feature on FUXWITHIT called the Focus Five, where Colin and I showcase five new artists that have captured our attention. So when I saw Silva had released his third track of the year I geared up for another great track and was not let down in the least. "Diffuse" again has a glitchy, trippy opening before the track finally clicks into gear. Like a Rube Goldberg machine "Diffuse" utilizes seemingly endless amounts of instruments and effects, building something we couldn't possibly imagine. And while the drop is a brilliant, banging get-down, the true genius of Silva lays in his ability to sew all of these elements together so seamlessly. Twelve Mixes To Get You Through The Week

Going back through the year I've already shared several masterful mixes, from the likes of Tiga, Point Point, and Alan Fitzpatrick (as well as five new episodes of My Mixtape). While I normally write more lengthy descriptions and sales pitches as to why you ought to listen, I've found that today I've become overwhelmed with wonderful musical journeys. So with that in mind I've compiled a dozen of my favourites of 2018 so far, and will share with very brief descriptions. There's everything from jungle DnB, experimental bass and trap, dubstep, disco, house, and chill. Last week I promoted FUXWITHIT's Fourth Anniversary party, and just prior to going to Night Owl, some of the crew and I were hosted at a recording studio on Queen west. Turns out it was the home of brand new R&B duo Good Thng. Their debut EP Good Thing dropped two weeks ago today, and I'm happy to be able to bring the lead single "Someone" to Bump In The Hump tonight. Look out for these two, they're up to big things with true musical talent, including live vocals and organic instrumentation.It's shows like this where I really delve into everything electronic and dance. From the now standard disco opening, to the following funk, R&B, house, techno, future bass, DnB, trap and dubstep, Bump In The Hump is home to all things our Canadians are cooking up. Five Fire February Finds

Last night was lit, partying with the FUXWITHIT fam to celebrate their fourth anniversary, and while I recover today I'm turning to a handful of tracks I discovered this first week or so of February. From personal favourites (Maddmon, LigOne and Jessie Ware) to new names (Opiuo, Zilverstep, and Mist), there's a solid mix of funk and fire. Tiber - Good 4 U

I don't know what is it, but there's certainly something going on on the opposite side of the globe. Whether it's Flume, Slumberjack, or Anna Lunoe, there's always some awesome Aussie tunes being cooked up. This fact was something my pal Colin at FUXWITHIT addressed nearly 3 years ago here. While there's no particular essence to Australian electronic productions, there seems to be no shortage of quality content. One of the latest examples of that excellence comes from Geelong's Tiber.

"Good 4 U," the lead single from his upcoming Moments EP, is smooth, sexy and just a little bit dirty. There's elements of the fresh future bass vibes the likes of Wave Racer and What So Not were so well known for, built around some strong vocal production. And while I absolutely love the chords and chops that come together at 0:41, it's his heavier and more violent electronic explosion at 2:17 that takes this track up to an 11. Herzeloyde - myway

Melbourne based producer Herzeloyde is making sure the world knows he's back in business, with the release of his track "myway." But the question remains, did he really leave us at all? Last Friday Cosmo's Midnight uploaded Herzeloyde's remix of "History" (as covered on FUXWITHIT here), and prior to that he released 5 track EP, 4D on Bandcamp on the 24th of February. Perhaps the genre tag #imback is in reference to his dark industrial sound which was missing from his "History" remix.

"myway" is absolutely wicked, and I mean that in both possible ways: evil and awesome. It strikes me as the kind of music the evil empire would listen to while working on the Death Star. There's an ominous air about it, punctuated by heavy metal machinery and futuristic whoops and whirs. You cannot help but feel its dark energy deep in your core, infecting you with the desire to destroy any and all rebel forces. Think The Empire Strikes Back in track form, there's no denying the darkness has won. As of now, there is no download available, although my inclination would be to check his Bandcamp page in the coming days, as the vast majority of his catalog can be found there.

Bump In The Hump is back on Radio Humber's main feed, 96.9 FM, for good starting tonight with the season six premiere. As always the focus remains on the newest releases from across the country, regardless of genre. Join me in discovering what our Canadian producers have cooked up every Wednesday. I've always had my choice of quality tracks to play on Bump In The Hump, but the trend of me having to cut some out each week continues. I really do agree that we're in a golden age of music (Colin's take on FUXWITHIT convinced me), and I think this show is the perfect example of that. It is always a mix of the biggest names, garnering millions of plays, and bedroom artists, just making beats. Electronic music is the most flexible medium, allowing magic to arise in infinite ways.

This week is no different. It's the first episode of the month, and CRaymak has been at it again; as has Attlas. Michael Sparks and LOUDPVCK hooked up over the phone. Blu J graced Deadbeats. Fahjah flipped a classic. Again on Bump In The Hump, we also get new Internet Daughter and Noahplause. You won't want to miss these dope tracks or the others I've saved for next week!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Dabin - The Fall

Since 2017 began, we've had one new Dabin track a month on Bump In The Hump, and that trend continues for April tonight with "The Fall." Fresh off his brilliant debut album Two Hearts, "The Fall" is not only a dramatic display of Dabin's production brilliance, but it is one of the most important pieces in the album's arc. This is something I wrote about in my review of it on FUXWITHIT (read here), particularly when discussing Dabin on the guitar (an integral piece of his live shows) and its role as the connecting red thread. Jilbare x Future Magic - Fire (ft. Izzy Salinel)*
Third release from Future Magic in a week and a half. Another sensational production, playing beautifully with vocals, getting all emotional with wicked future bass synths, and those drum fills. Wow.

Gumball - Color Coded*
My kind of adventurous blend of future bass with other seemingly conflicting subgenres. Big triumphant arcs, perfectly placed effects and sublime vocal work. Super smart production.

Kehlani - Gangsta (Parker Remix)
Beautiful bed for Kehlani's vocals that's at once heartening while also ominous in its delivery. Doesn't seem to be any slowing this one down. Good strong G vibes working with the lyrics brilliantly.

AC Slater & Taiki Nulight - Super Doopah Legend
Another stellar, shot-in-the-arm kind of track from Night Bass boss AC Slater. There's no knowing what this track is doing or where its going. Twisty-turny and full of surprises.

Stooki Sound ft. Latroit & Lliam Taylor - Echos (R3LL Remix)
Gotta have me some jersey club for my weekend, and not many do it as well as R3LL. Full of feels but also bouncy as all hell. Plenty of pump up in this one.

Alison Wonderland & Lido - Messiah (Havok Roth & Kayoh Remix)*
First I need to say that Lido's mix is another instant classic, and early choice for remix of the year. That being said this remix is stupid good. Like five minutes of soaring fire. GOLD!

JayKode - Roll Out
Even though you can feel the bass coming right from the get go, there's no being prepared for the waves of tweaking electro that lies ahead. Add a little ivory tickling & you've got one bad-ass banger.

LigOne x Holly - Lazy Social*
Somehow this one snuck into the my feed despite being 4 months old. But it's LigOne and Holly so it's damn good. Oozes with originality as expected. A little laidback, but groovy as all hell.

Dex - Images (edit)*
Ridiculously wicked and wild Tchami-like sound design. Haven't heard house done like this in a while, and its got everything I want. Groove, piano, vocals and a menacing bassline. Love it.

Juke Ellington - Sexual Healing*
Vocals, drums and energy all so on point. Even with the onslaught of future bass at the moment, this one still sounds fresh as anything. A beautiful banger, no doubt.

Jetique - Love On My Mind (ft. Terri B!)
Lead by beautiful vocals, this is deep house at its best. Instantly commands your attention, delivering a divine groove, demanding you dance. Transforms all listening spaces into the coolest of clubs.

Anamanaguchi ft. Hatsune Miku - Miku (Carpainter Remix)*
Pure pleasure pop. Couldn't be any more bubbly or brilliant. Feels like you're floating in an 8-bit version of outer space, soaring above all cares and worries. Unapologetic easy listening.

Childish Gambino - Do Ya Like (Mark Melgo Remix)*
Warm weather is right around the corner and I'm looking forward to listening to more music like this, rounding out all day dance sessions, spinning in the summer breeze. Good vibes all around.

YOOKiE - Subs (James Meyers & AWAL Remix)

Nearly two months ago I wrote about YOOKiE's track "Subs" on my friend's blog, FUXWITHIT, (post here). Today it received a brain battering remix courtesy Chicago's James Meyers and mystery man, AWAL. These two put YOOKiE's incredibly designed original production to good use, taking the already diabolical drop to a more monstrous level. In the post above, I describe "Subs" as "part Frankenstein's monster, part Ridley Scott's Alien," and while that image stands strong in this revision, it's almost more visceral in its presentation. It's as though "Subs" were the original Alien from 1979, and this is the reboot with Predator. It's more violent than its predecessor, taking the original throbbing of "Subs" and upping the intensity. It shows a warped perspective of the universe, showing utter despair and licentiousness at its core. Whether it's the egg beater-esque treatment of the synth, the maleficent manipulation of the additional vocals or the ominous strobing alarm, there is nothing in this track that isn't an assault on either the original or our humanity. The inherent evil of this remix is unavoidable, reminding me of the darkness of Rezz, who yesterday responded to my tweet wondering "does she feed off nightmares" with simply "the depth of my brain." First Of The Year: Sneak Peek at 2017 Premieres of Bump In The Hump and My Mixtape featuring ClassyVlassy

Tonight marks the 2017 return of both Bump In The Hump and My Mixtape on 96.9 FM Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump will be a special two hour episode, as we enjoy a small serving of the cornucopia of tracks released over the two week winter hiatus. There were a number of bootlegs and special tracks released because of the holidays, including tracks from both Bwana and Lunice via LuckyMe's yearly Advent calendar, a Christmas themed track from Venetian Snares, and CRaymak's bootleg of Skrillex "First Of The Year."
