Enlightened Listening for July 30

It's the Friday of a long weekend, so without further ado, I present this week's Enlightened Listening. Sorted from light, light-hearted and groovy to heavy, deep and banging, the 16 releases feature countless trusted names, several pre-album singles, and yes, a trio of awesome Anjuna offerings. Enlightened Listening for November 22

This week's edition of Enlightened Listening hits the epic standard once again. It's full of legendary names and extended cuts. With that in mind I'll aim to keep the descriptions short so you can just get right into the music which ranges from deep and progressive house to out and out bangers, especially heavy on the DnB. Skip ahead if to the playlist if you like or catch highlights in the following paragraph.

Ben Böhmer leads it off with a brilliant album, which is then followed by perhaps my favourite All Day I Dream EP, which is made up of four fantastic fable-like tracks from Volen Sentir. Friendly Fires bring in a couple brilliant remixes as well as a couple album extras in Offline, while Goom Gum take on a Depeche Mode classic. Joy Orbison and Overmono unleash brilliant b-side "Still Moving," which leads us into a bunch of banging bass tracks starting with a sensational Sable Valley pairing. Mat Zo and Doctor P deliver a couple genius cuts, reminding us of their revered status throughout the scene. However it is the future in Kryojen and WE ARE FURY, who cap the playlist with sensational soundscapes and a dark dystopian future. Enjoy all that and more below, and have a great weekend!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Greg Gow - People Mover EP

Veteran Toronto DJ and producer Greg Gow has been moving people for the better part of two decades, most recently with the three track People Mover EP which came out Monday on Swedish imprint Truesoul. Not only will you hear a cut from said EP on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, you can also see him live in person as part of CODA's 5 Year Anniversary Saturday with Carl Craig, Mike Gibbs and Jackie Spade (RSVP/Tickets). RL Grime - Valhalla (Reaper Remix)

If there's one thing I've noticed with RL Grime's recent productions, it's that the more DnB flavour it draws the more amped I get and the more I enjoy it. Case in point this new take on Void single "Valhalla" from fresh face and fast riser Reaper. Recently Reaper's remixes of "I Do Coke" and "Into The Light" have gained serious traction with 13 rinsing out the latter in his set at REBEL (see here). All kinds of explosive energy and destruction dominate this mix, playing perfectly against the now iconic siren wail. The frantic feeling and apocalyptic soundscape fit in both RL's older style and newer output. While there's nothing like throwing up trap arms, the outpouring of energy a jacked up DnB twist brings is even better. Enlightened Listening for July 20

After nearly losing it all this afternoon (my iTunes crashed and I thought I had lost all of my metadata), new music has arrived and saved the day (don't worry my iTunes is alive and well!). I'm going to have to keep things short and sweet as I'm running out of time, so no descriptions, just a playlist of new music ranging from funk to house and trap to techno/club/bass. Top 100 Tracks of 2017: 100-76

Starting today, through Friday, I'll be revealing my list of the "Top 100 Tracks of 2017." The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it important to preface this kind of list with some insight into its creation and the reasoning behind it. While I spent a lot of time seriously pouring through this year of music, this is not really a serious endeavour. It is merely my fun way of further sharing the tracks and artists that made my year better. The rankings may not be scientific or even fair, rather they are simply a reflection on how strongly I felt these tracks and how much praise I felt they deserved.

As with last years list (starting here), you'll see that I included multiple tracks from my favourite artists. You'll also notice that the thread of disco/funk runs strongly throughout, as it is without question where I found myself going most this year. I did however try to touch on a variety of genres, while of course sticking to what I really like and felt warranted inclusion in such a list. Again mirroring last year, you'll find a relatively low amount of 'club' music, certainly in comparison to the amount of time I spent within them. But that's just me, I tend to listen to and enjoy so called 'headphone' music as much as big, banging, sub-woofer throbbing, beats. That being said plenty of this list would pulverize a club and I'd love to hear any of these tracks on a big system.

Finally, I will once again say that this is by no means an exhaustive list; there are without a doubt exceptional tunes that somehow failed to make the cut. However, onward and, in this case, downward, from tracks 100 to 76 we go. See the soundcloud playlist here and at the bottom of the page.

Blvk Sheep & Far & Few - Pop

When trap first cropped up as an 'EDM' genre in the early 2010s, I was still doing my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and just starting out with my radio shows. I believe I called 2012 the year of the trap takeover, but little did I know it would still be one of the most banging and fresh genres all these years later. We can thank the likes of RL Grime, Flosstradamus and others for its uprising and evolution, especially in regards to the former's "Era" which further combined sounds and styles. Today one of my favourite duos in the trap sphere, Far & Few, have followed the trends of hybridization in a brand new track called "Pop," alongside fellow fire thrower Blvk Sheep.

I've written about these three before, so you should already be aware of their abilities, and while my favourite from Far & Few trends more to the melodic/future bass side of trap (Street Signs), this one really shows off their penchant for powerful firestorms. "Pop" leans heavily on a cut up version of the amen break, and cracking vocal chops, but really the key to this killer track lies in the gritty, grimy atmosphere that explodes again and again. The builds are as epic as the blistering bass, reminiscent of both bass house and and dubstep, while still remaining tied to trap through fantastic drum flourishes. The second drop features a more future bass tilt through the spiraling synths, before being flipped a la "Era" into a dope DnB section. There's no doubt in my mind that "Pop" will literally have people popping off on the dance floor, absolutely losing their minds. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Hanz Ford - Enlightenment Takes Wattage EP

We first heard from the man most often known as Hanz Ford, when he released his track made for the deadmau5 Masterclass "Follow The Rawbit," albeit under his more tempered pseudonym RoHawn. Shortly after that we went 3 weeks in a row with progressively deeper and darker tracks from the heavy hitting Hanz Ford. Now this week he released his first EP, Enlightenment Takes Wattage, which pits Alan Watts voice-over on top of equally penetrating productions. The ideals of Eastern Philosophy work well with the penetrating bass, destroying personal identity so as to achieve higher consciousness. As a big fan of Pink Floyd, and someone who finds this kind of deep thought sadly absent from the vast majority of electronic music, I'm over the moon that we've finally got some truly smart and thought-provoking music. As always Bump In The Hump gradually picks up steam running through a healthy serving of house from Sultan + Shepard through to Bobby Love's remix of the legendary Giorgio Moroder. The legends just keep on coming as Pomo takes on Hall & Oates, and how about a G-House remix of RL Grime? There's also new Keys N Krates and the long awaited TroyBoi, Ekali collab. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sordid Soundz - That Disco Sound

The mere mention of Spacedisco gives me a good feeling. Really, what could be a better combination? Earlier this year we heard the absolutely incredible "After The Rain" from Demuir, on hometown hero Hatiras' label, and now today I've got, not one but, two new tracks from Spacedisco Records. Below is the latest release from Ian Donaldson, aka Sordid Soundz, and while he's relatively new release-wise, his musical background includes working with Bronski Beat. With that in mind it's clear to see he's got synth skills coming out the wazoo. "That Disco Sound" is sure to get you movin' and groovin'.Tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump is unlike any we've had before, and that's saying something considering the wide array of elements it always entails. It starts off epic in arc (the first 5 tracks running 35 minutes), before finding breakbeat, funk, dancehall, future bass, trap, garage, bassline and dubstep in the fire finale. There's remixes of big names like Nero, Notorious B.I.G. and even Kendrick Lamar. Plus there's the weekend warmup, in which I'll be looking ahead to RL Grime's set at The Danforth Music Hall, Saturday (RSVP/Tickets). A November To Remember

I've spoken/written about it being club season ad nauseam lately, so I'm here put an end to that with one fell swoop. This November is going to be one to remember; as you can see above, there are at least a dozen artists I'll be making my way to the clubs to see. So read along below as I do a quick detailing of the 5 Ws, setting up the massive month of music ahead. NOV 3 - Trippy Turtle w/ Henrik The Artist @ Velvet Underground
November starts off with a bang, with perhaps my most anticipated show of the whole month. I've been waiting for Trippy Turtle to come for years and even more so for Henrik The Artist, who I've gushed over several times on this blog. In my eyes there is no better Jersey Club bootleg artist than Trippy Turtle nor is there a more kawaii chiptune composer than Henrik. Over the past while, I've found my feet more glued to the floor than ever, but I'm confident the craziness that these two will conjure from the speakers will have me back bouncing up and down like I were a teenager again. The Velvet Underground is perhaps the perfect venue for such a wild and wacky show (RSVP/Tickets).

NOV 4 - Great Good Fine OK @ The Garrison
To be honest I can't remember where/when I first heard GGFO, but I do know that the song I first heard, "By My Side," immediately gripped me. Jon Sandler's falsetto vocals are stunningly beautiful and play perfectly with the sublime synth pop construction of their songs. They're funky and groovy and I can't wait for their vibes to wash over me in the comfy confines of The Garrison (RSVP/Tickets).

NOV 11 - RL Grime w/ graves & Kittens @ Danforth Music Hall
Trap titan RL Grime brings his Nova Tour to the big stage, with support from graves and Kittens. Other than TNGHT, no one has made a bigger or longer lasting effect on trap than RL. All evidence (his most recent releases "Era" and Halloween VI) suggests this is going to be absolute madness. Add to the bill rising stars and badasses in their own right, graves and Kittens, and you can see why this is a can't miss event for those that demand the best booty and brain shaking bass (RSVP/Tickets).

NOV 17 - Pete Tong @ UNIUN
Now most people know Pete Tong as the inimitable voice behind BBC Radio One's Essential Mix, but less know about his mixing and production abilities. While he skews more towards baleric, which doesn't really suit Toronto mid-November, he is of course incredibly versatile, dabbling in all things electronic and dance. Even if he breaks out just one of his Classic House orchestral pieces, the trip to UNIUN is well warranted. Expect the atmosphere to be warm, friendly and fun (RSVP/Tickets).

NOV 18 - Mura Masa w/ Lunice @ Danforth Music Hall
Both of these amazing artists dropped their debut albums this year, and both are incredibly well respected in the music sphere, just take a look at the long list of features on either album. While both craft incredibly infectious club tunes, the mix of dirty dusters from Lunice and clean crisp cuts from Mura Masa makes for one of the most magical nights in recent memory. Even though this will be the 3rd time seeing Mura Masa in around a year, this is without a doubt one of my most anticipated shows in that same time frame. These a truly two legends, and an absolute can't miss event (RSVP/Tickets).

NOV 23 - Ekali w/ josh pan & Y2K @ Velvet Underground
This month of madness gets capped off with perhaps the most mayhem one bill can handle. By now you better know about Ekali, and to be fair, I've covered just as much josh pan and Y2K as Ekali on this blog. It is however Ekali's Babylon tour and he's got his own stage production set up, although it will likely have to be scaled back to fit Velvet's smaller stage. And while it's a shame (visually), the intimate atmosphere will only improve the onslaught of energy. Each of these three have dabbled in a diverse range of sounds/styles, so I'm not sure what to expect, except the unexpected (RSVP/Tickets).

As above, I'm aiming to attend each of these six shows (health permitting, as my body often fights me following back to back late nights), and as usual I'll likely be live tweeting. Follow me @OggieJames, catch coverage here and on Bump In The Hump, and perhaps I'll see you in the clubs!

RL Grime - Halloween VI

It's that time of year again, maybe the most wonderful wicked time of the year for electronic music. Trap titan RL Grime is back with the sixth installment of his legendary Halloween mixtape series. The mix of the grungiest, grimiest and all around evil tracks and samples once again features a slew of star studded guest appearances. This year the immortal Tony Hawk opens the hour of heinous heat and bloodcurdling beats, while Grime's 'father' RL Stine returns for another appearance. Music-wise there there's some diabolic Danny Brown, "Bodak Yellow" and "Innerbloom" bootlegs, the fantastic Falcons "Want Your Body," and of course it's all capped off with the latest from RL, the game changing, "Era," from his forthcoming album Nova. Richfellow - Rouse

I've written about Jadū Dala here before, highlighting them as one of my favourite places to find new, quality and original music on Soundcloud (see IBI. - Arrival). The label which has been around for just over a year (May 25th to be exact), just saw it's milestone 50th release. But that's not the only reason it's special. Jesse Babini, one of the founders of the Philadelphia based tastemakers, is the man behind the madness that is "Rouse." Known more widely as Richfellow, Babini has brought to the table exactly what makes Jadū Dala such a force. The trap they put out is always wild and wonky, truly pushing the boundaries, not just in their style, but their sounds as well.

"Rouse" starts subtle before proceeding to blasts your ears with the sound of air rushing out of a balloon as Babini stretches and plays it like an instrument. To be clear I do not know what that sound is or how he's made it, but my god is it crisp, original and all kinds of awesome. Whatever it is, it is pure magic, as we've come to expect from the "Magical Music Outfit." There have only been two times in my life when I can say I've been as awestruck with a track as I have been with "Rouse" - 1: Baauer's "Dum Dum" and 2: RL Grime's "Core." Quite the comparison I know, but "Rouse" truly is special, and in true Jadū Dala form they've delivered this delirium inducing track free. Get it via Hive, here. Sinjin Hawke - Onset

We've finally got our first taste of Sinjin Hawke's highly anticipated album First Opus. Posted today on Fractal Fantasy's Souncloud, "Onset" sits in the 11th spot on the 14 piece tracklist. For those familiar with Hawke's catalog, it's a welcome return to his trademark epic sound design, and for those only finding the Jersey born producer now, there may be no better introduction.

I first came across Sinjin Hawke in his production "Yea Hoe" alongside Gangsta Boo, which may be the only better indication of his colossal creative ability. That awesome artistry lead Kanye to tap him as a producer on "Wolves," which after hearing "Onset" or "Yea Hoe" oozes with the inimitable Hawke at it's heart. But now we've got Sinjin doing Sinjin for Sinjin, which is exactly why people are so excited for First Opus, his first original release since "Prom Nite" on Pelican Fly back in 2013.

"Onset" heralds the return of his eminence, not just because it's our first taste of First Opus, but quite literally through the revelry of the horns in the intro. They are tuned as well or better than any trap horns I've heard, instantly cementing "Onset" as a force to be reckoned with. But the way Hawke builds around those utterly epic blasts with tuned toms, sub-bass resonance and a smattering of vocal clips makes this one of the most intricate masterpieces of production the world of electronic music has seen in years. It is on par with the most original and ear catching tunes I've ever come across, TNGHT's "Acrylics," RL Grime's "Core," and fellow Kanye collaborator, Cashmere Cat's "With Me."

I'm not sure I've got anything left in my vocabulary that can properly quantify just how massive a production "Onset" is, so I'll just leave you to hit the play button over and over. Benzi - Girl Trapz 10

Benzi's prolific Girl Trapz series has reached a massive milestone, airing the 10th installment on Diplo & Friends earlier in November. Now the extended version is online for streaming and free download. It doesn't take very long for this 40 track mix to get you fired up, kicking things into high gear with one of Benzi's trademark edits, reworking RL Grime, Skrillex and What So Not's massive collab "Waiting" geniously for Girl Trapz. All told, there are four such edits to go along with other exclusive and unreleased tracks from the likes of Vincent, STFU, Doobious, Slumberjack, and TWRK partner, eSenTRIK. This is all in line with a typical Benzi mix, his connections are seemingly endless; producers clamour to get the Benzi stamp of approval. There are very few DJs that can boast the level of tastemaking and flawless mix quality that has made Benzi one of the most trusted names in the game. His ear is always on point, correctly identifying the next big thing before it breaks into mainstream consciousness. Best Tracks I Heard This Week

With this busy week of seeing Booka Shade and Grandtheft, and their openers Doorly and Pusher, respectively, I've been inundated with great tunes. Add to that the plethora of productions I hear on a regular day and I've got more music than I can handle. So I figured I'd throw together a playlist in honour of the massive week of music I've come across, or at least the ones on soundcloud. Enjoy!

G Jones - Pull Up

There's no other way to describe G Jones' latest track "Pull Up," as anything other than bass. With riddim, dubstep and trap influences throughout, "Pull Up" is a confluence of the all the best, bass-focused genres has to offer. It's menacing, rattling the very core of the listener, with sound design reminiscent of the best bass producers known to this world. Somehow he's channeled Flux Pavilion, Excision, Bassnectar, Rusko and RL Grime, and combined them all, in a cohesive and killer fashion.
I cannot help but envision an interstellar space battle, as ships careen through explosions, with lasers and rockets blasting all around. In fact I think it should be the soundtrack for the latest installment of Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare. The real magic and guiding force behind "Pull Up" is the percussion; resisting it is futile as G Jones grabs listeners by the scruff of the neck, dunking our heads in toilet bowls, brazenly bullying us with his bombastic bass throbs. From its ravey beginnings through its domineering and derelict devolution of dance sentimentalities, G Jones succeeds in delivering his vision for bass tracks of the future. "Pull Up" is the lead single from his forthcoming EP, Visions, set to be released "early 2017," for which he is also touring North America from December 30th through April 22nd. L D R U feat. Paige IV - Keeping Score (The Remixes)

Australian insanity inducer, L D R U has been riding the waves of the smash hit collaboration with vocalist Paige IV, "Keeping Score." And for those of you keeping score at home, it's now logged nearly 700 thousand plays, in just over 6 months, on soundcloud alone. Further leveraging its preponderance, the incredibly infectious track has received six superior remixes from the likes of Cut Snake, Luca Lush, The Meeting Tree, Terace, Oski, and Boxinbox & Lionsize. Hear them all, below. One cannot begin to address the awesomeness and incredible breadth and power of these remixes without paying homage to the incredible original production and absolutely amazing vocals laid down by Paige IV. However, the way the six remixers have utilized these phenomenal pieces to create six distinct and undeniably exceptional new versions of "Keeping Score," is dizzying.

Cut Snake was the first to have their remix uploaded to L D R U's soundcloud and serves an an excellent introduction to the first class collection of remixes. It succeeds in transforming the original into a rave-worthy, bouncy house classic; unmistakably awesome and uplifting, an extraordinary lead mix.

The following mix, from Luca Lush, plays the perfect foil, maintaining its piano power while moving from the rave to the after party. Despite Luca Lush's proclivity to produce more intense, fast moving and in your face remixes, this one could easily fly under the radar were it not for its breathtaking beauty. Leaning heavily on Paige's vocals, Luca Lush's production lives up to his name providing a plush pillow on which to rest your head.

But you won't be sleeping long, as the remix package roars into the riotous revision from Boxinbox & Lionsize. The turnt electro drop smashes behind booming bass drums and stabbing synths. While this mix boasts the most stereotypical EDM stylings, it is incredibly infectious, invoking heart palpitations and the feels of a Congorock track of yore.

Next up is The Meeting Tree's mix with an abundance of smart sound designed atmosphere and pernicious percussion. Ringing bells and a trap get down give this version the feel of an early Baauer production. Guaranteed to get those thots twerking on the floor, I anticipate hearing this mix in some upcoming TWRK or TWONK Team mixtapes.

The penultimate mix comes from Terace, whose version strikes me as the hardest quantify. Seemingly taking elements of multiple genres, Terace manipulates and plays with Paige's vocals while subverting any expectations of what the track ought to sound like. The magic of this mix is the driving subwoofing bass that rifles the remix ever forward.

Finally, the mix that drew me to this package in the first place, the inimitable Oski. Perhaps best suited to alter the original, Oski seems to use the same air as L D R U, flipping "Keeping Score" in an almost VIP or 2.0 fashion. Whether it's the awesome intro "aw yeah, is that Oski?" the awesome RL Grime-esque honking drop, the undeniable atmosphere or the genius tuned percussion, everything about Oski's mix is an absolute win.

Do not sleep on this remix package. There's something for everyone and quite simply succeeds in creating six new and terrific tracks.

RL Grime - Aurora

It's been quite some time since we've heard anything from Harry Steinway, first as Clockwork, and the now, seemingly dominant, moniker and project, RL Grime. The mastermind behind one of the biggest and best all around productions the electronic music scene has ever heard, "Core," and it's equally well produced and groundbreaking album Void, has finally broken the silence with an out-of-this-world music video, "Aurora." Like the images in the video, RL Grime's production soars to incredible heights, yet again showcasing his astronomical talent and status as a topflight producer.
