Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: The Weeknd - Blinding Lights (Jimi Needles Edition)

Staying with the same sentiment as last week, Bump In The Hump remains jubilant as we say goodbye to June, welcome July and celebrate the second stage of Ontario's reopening. All across the map, while featuring several remixes of classics from Baauer, Boney M, The Prodigy and The Weeknd, this week's all-new episode has something for everyone. There's disco, funk, trap, DnB, trance, and even some live stuff, and you can find a bunch of those elements in this Jimi Needles take on "Blinding Lights." Available as a free download, this remix gives new liquid life to the already intoxicating original, souping up its engine with a wicked growl, pushing the rhythm ever faster. It's undeniably fun and playful, especially as Needles takes the groove out for a rip in the back half, careening around corners, blasting off into the horizon. Get "Blinding Lights" now below, and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Enlightened Listening for June 26

I know I'm more than a day late, and while I'm planning to take a few days off from blogging, I've just got to share this week's incredible new releases. Headlining this week's Enlightened Listening is a trio of albums, including Gaspard Augé's genius and epic debut, Escapades, Chromeo's killer live compilation, Date Night, and Unglued's gorgeous galactic liquid jam, Interplanetary Radio. Further standout releases come smack dab in the middle as Canadian outfits Vibrancy and Westwood Recordings bring together a ton of talents in the third edition of the Exhibits compilation series and the I Get Down With Aliens remix package, respectively. Finally, there are three more singular tracks I just have to showcase; they are Fluida's splendiferous "Refuge," voljum's insanely awesome "anemoi," and Robert Smith's remix of his song with CHVRCHES "How Not To Drown." Find those and more via the playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Have a great weekend. Enjoy!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Geraldine Hunt - Can't Fake The Feeling (Carl Cox Rework)

We did it! We made it to summer. Vaccines are rolling out, the world is opening up, and shows are starting to be announced. Hope is assuredly on the horizon, and as a result, we're going full party mode tonight on Bump In The Hump. With nearly an hour of hot house to start the show and a bunch of bangers shortly thereafter, tonight's all-new episode is jam-packed with goodies, including another reworked classic from Montreal label Unidisc. Here Carl Cox delivers two takes on Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake The Feeling," a more typical disco house remix and an energetic rework. The latter headlines our final flourish as we dance off into the night. Credence - Ruffle Jam

Something funky is going down in Russia as Saint Petersburg's Credence has captured my attention with raucous joint, "Ruffle Jam." Boasting a bottom end that would impress even Sir Mix-a-Lot, the combination of sultry sax, off-kilter drums, and electronic impetus transforms the soundwaves into a bowl of oatmeal. Delightfully dense, the grooves here are rock-solid yet do not appear overly orchestrated. Instead, they live up to the title, as it's easy to envision this being the result of a jam session. The kind of stuff that gets my motor running, "Ruffle Jam," is a groove well worth riding, sure to inspire a smile or add some swagger to your stroll. Stream below and get it via Apple Music here.

Butch - Raindrops (ft. Kemelion)

CircoLoco Records continues to churn out colourful EPs as they march towards their massive compilation's full release Friday, July 9th. Following the likes of Rampa and DJ Tennis on Monday Dreamin' Blue and Green, respectively, Butch leads the Violet fivesome, which also includes Carl Craig, Margaret Dygas, Red Axes and Luciano. Alongside Butch on "Raindrops" is fellow German talent Kemelion, who lends his voice to the EP's incredible opener. And what an open it is. Right from the jump, Butch bares his brilliance for all to see with a well-crafted percussion bed from which the first vocal chop appears to emanate organically. And really, this is the key to the quality of "Raindrops." While undeniably electronic, it does not feel machine-made but rather restrained, calm and exceptionally cool. It will not blow you away, instead, it will sweep you off your feet with its slow, sublime swells and Kemelion's later, compelling vocals. Soul refreshing and refuelling, "Raindrops" is just what I needed on this Monday morning. Get "Raindrops" as part of the Monday Dreamin' Violet EP here.

Enlightened Listening for June 18

It's the weekend and that means it's time for another edition of Enlightened Listening. Headlining this week's new music playlist, and accounting for more than half of its tracks, is the simply massive Defected Presents House Masters compilation made up of a ton of Todd Edwards' legendary catalogue. He's not not the only time-tested and trusted talent here however, as Chromeo, Booka Shade and Blawan each deliver incredible new records. Young guns like TSHA, Simon Doty, Broken Future and STUND don't disappoint either. That said, I feel like I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't give Skream and DJ Deeon's releases specific shine, as they are both brilliant and mind-blowing, each and every track, particularly in regards to the percussion. Top quality stuff from top to bottom, stream the playlist, curated for optimal flow, below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Have a great weekend!

Full, Uncut Interview with MAP (2021)

Recorded June 10th on Zoom, this is my full conversation with the Winnipeg house trio of Marco Roberto (previously Mark Me Low), Ayge and PRZM, together known as MAP. Topics included: the evolution of MAP Mondays from a closed-door hangout/production session to an inclusive stream, an update on Winnipeg's reception to house music, the evolution of the MAP sound, what each member brings to the table, inspiration from the likes of Carlo Lio, Nathan Barato and Rawthentic Music, their ongoing interactive bi-weekly Twitch shows, their upcoming releases and, of course, their second episode of My Mixtape, which premieres Saturday, June 19th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber.FOLLOW MAP: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITCH TWITTER

Bump In The Hump: June 16 (Season 9, Episode 76)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Carlo Lio & Nathan Barato - Girl Meets Boy

It's our last show before the official start to summer, and we've got vibes for days. As usual, Bump In The Hump will run the gamut of genres tonight with an assortment of acid, breaks, DnB, funk, garage and more. Those that follow the show closely will know that this week also marks the return of My Mixtape, and it's because of that that we end tonight's episode with the latest from the power pairing known as The Roaches, Carlo Lio and Nathan Barato.

Released on Rawthentic, a favourite label of Marco Roberto (the M of MAP), "Girl Meets Boy" is a seven-minute-long masterclass in the interweaving intricacies of top-notch tech house. Always adding and subtracting sounds while further playing with the percussion and samples, this is no straightforward ride but rather an irresistibly circuitous creation. The perfect track to conclude tonight's episode, immediately before a clip of my conversation with Marco, Ayge and PRZM of MAP as Marco extols the virtues of Lio and Barato later in our interview. Catch the second edition of My Mixtape featuring MAP Saturday at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber, and buckle in for tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 EDT, or find it after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud, here.

The Magician - Magic Tape 102

The Magician launched us into June with another lush episode of his marvellous Magic Tape mix series. Like all previous editions, this new hour features a variety of funky disco house joints with a focus on new and forthcoming music. Also, just like its predecessor Magic Tape 101, the first twenty minutes are pure bliss. No matter my mood, I cannot bring myself to skip these sublime starts. In fact, these two most recent mixes have supplied some of my favourite tunes in the last month or two (see: the Perel remix of "See You Again," Dorothys Fortress' fabulous "Lucha Libre," and Krystal Klear's intoxicating "Piano Banana.") But, back to Magic Tape 102. The opening track, the only ID left, has a really familiar feeling. And here's where I get to the fun speculation as I have a sneaking suspicion (more likely just misguided hope) that this is new music from Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell, aka The 2 Bears. Musically, lyrically and thematically, it screams The 2 Bears, and I couldn't be happier if that is the case. However, and serendipitously punny, it could also be a new warner case production. Again, this would be a fit in his oeuvre, and we know he's been part of Magic Tapes and The Magician's Potion Records in the past. That said, there is no proper evidence either way as to whether this is The 2 Bears, warner case, or someone else entirely. Regardless, it's a fun, funky start to another exceptional edition of the Magic Tape series. Get down to it below and check out the largely complete (and correct) tracklist here.

UPDATE: The opening track has been released on Potion Records. It's Carl Chaste, "Change."

Tim Taylor - Check It

Warrington's Tim Taylor first made waves three years ago with his wildly popular edit of "Billie Jean." More than a million plays later, with further fierce takes on "Ghostbusters" and "Bodak Yellow," the young talent has clearly captured the imagination of Jamie Jones as Taylor made his debut on Hot Creations last month.

Do You Like... features four tracks that Taylor imagined the label founder playing out, focusing on Jones' penchant for darker, funkier beats. My favourite of the four, decidedly due to said dark and funky delivery, "Check It" commands one hell of a hefty, throbbing bassline. Paired with a plethora of propulsive percussion, the killer tech power of "Check It" is of can't miss quality. Like a rollercoaster, the first few moments see you get strapped in before beginning your climb, then all of a sudden, the floor drops out from beneath you as your head snaps back, powerless but to ride out the onslaught of twists, turns, and loop-the-loops. You might want to check your pulse after this exhilarating expedition, but don't be surprised when your heart rate matches this brilliant banger's BPM.

Buckle in and enjoy "Check It" below, and get it as part of the driving Do You Like... EP here.

Enlightened Listening for June 11

We keep creeping closer to summer, and this week's releases would seem to reflect those rising temperatures and longer days. This week's Enlightened Listening opens with an absolutely gorgeous album from Folamour that seems to have no weak spots whatsoever. An incredible accomplishment. Two awesome singles follow that as we continue with funky feels and organic grooves. A second highlight follows those singles as Jessie Ware caps her Platinum Edition of What's Your Pleasure? with two more incredible offerings. Next up is perhaps the most gorgeous jewel of them all, a breathtaking Brothers Macklovitch take on my favourite track from Tchami's Year Zero. Turning the tempo up a couple notches, two duo-made percussion-driven EPs follow with wicked tracks on each Oh and The Limit. My favourite of the three TroyBoi tracks to drop today then leads us into a couple cool, house singles before Hidden Face's brilliant Need U EP on This Never Happened. Finally, we throw caution to the wind as we end with the epic power of ARTBAT's remix of Röyksopp. Dig in now below. Enjoy!

Flight Facilities - The Ghost

Just a day after showcasing an hour of unreleased content against the backing of an immersive audio/visual experience, the Australian duo of Hugo Gruzman and James Lyell, aka Flight Facilities, has shared a new single on Future Classic. Complete with a simple yet striking video (below), "The Ghost" features an awesome acid onslaught amidst the very potent polish and playfulness that's made Flight Facilities such a success over the years. Like last month's "Light Up" with Channel Tres, this new single absolutely bodies the bass. Big chugging synths lead the way before the voice of "The Ghost" slithers its way into your ears, almost becoming one with the ever-expanding acid. And here, slithering is the keyword, as the essence of "The Ghost" zigs and zags its way into your unconscious. Quite like the obelisk in 2001: A Space Odyssey, as soon as you come into contact with this otherworldly power, you're invariably changed in some fundamental way. This unearthly, potentially evil, yet undeniably awesome energy takes hold in the second half of the track, as Flight Facilities go full fluoro with a phantasmagorical acid-laced finale. Get "The Ghost" from your preferred outlet here and stream below.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sophia Bel - No More (Durante Remix)

As we continue to cruise towards summer, Bump In The Hump has one more extended episode before we once again cede the final ten minutes to a My Mixtape interview. Just as we did last week, we showcase all but the kitchen sink as we glide through genres.

Following a deep, funky opening, our hands get raised in the air as we take in truly euphoric stuff from Nathan Micay and Pat Lok. And while I love those two tunes, they pale in comparison to Durante's radiant, resplendent take on Sophia Bel's breathtaking "No More." Instantly buoying, the remix features a plethora of percussion and, of course, Miss Bel's beatific vocals. However, the real hook of "No More," the one that keeps me coming back, and solidifies its spot as one of my favourite productions of the year, is the sublime, strident chord structure. It's hard not to be repetitive with words like resplendent, buoyant and euphoric when describing music, but there's no denying the resonance of those adjectives with this track. At low volumes, "No More" tickles the senses. When turned up, it sends you soaring, powered by PLUR. Get it below and catch it in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Deichkind - Autonom (Dixon Edit)

Friday saw the release of the highly anticipated CircoLoco Records debut EP, Monday Dreamin' Blue. Featuring five new productions, including Seth Troxler's celebrated "Lumartes," the EP indeed lives up to its bemusing title. While I already featured Rampa's heavenly "The Church" in the most recent edition of Enlightened Listening, I'm turning my attention now to Dixon's divine edit of Deichkind "Autonom."

Waking up to a rainy day with a ton of work on my plate, I found myself on edge before I could even get out of bed. Struggling to find any satisfaction or comfort from the majority of new music I played as I drank my coffee, I soon turned my attention to Dixon's "Autonom" edit." I knew I'd enjoyed it Friday, but when its cool ease washed over me this morning, I finally began to find peace. There are no big drops or head-spinning switch-ups here, but rather a resplendent rollout that simultaneously swaddles you in its sublime soundscape while relieving tension through its gentle massaging touch. In fact, it is that very cool comfort at the core of "Autonom" that led me to overlook it Friday, but I guess that just further illustrates the importance of mood (and time and place) when consuming music. Not everything is for everyone at every moment, but this is for me, right now. Maybe it is for you too. Find out now below.

DOS - Falling (Baltra Remix)

It's been about two months since I took a break from daily blogging, but I'm going to try to return to that routine today. Part of the reason for my pause was the struggle to 1) find a piece that inspired me to write, and more crucially 2) how I'd frame that article, both of which became increasingly difficult as the pandemic raged on. Without making this a treatise on blogging/music consumption/the music industry, I'll simply say that with summer and shows/festivals seemingly coming back in full force, I feel more comfortable in framing these daily blurbs as a diversion, a quick-hitting showcase of something that might make your day better. If these posts can do that, or, even better, get you on a new artist or genre, then I'm happy. Anyway, on with the post, which I'll now aim to keep even shorter and sweeter...

NYC's Baltra, a name I'll press play on whenever I see arise, has a new remix of Austrian DOS. "Falling," originally an expansive and dreamy joint with crisp drums and a hazy vocal sprinkle, gets turned on its head here. Where the independently released original lives up to its title, this brilliant new Baltra remix bounces buoyant, almost evaporating in its ethereal, euphoric rise. No longer is the track toppling or tumbling if it is even descending at all. It is "Falling" with a new style and grace, decidedly more direct and forceful than before. Especially evident in its beefy bottom end, Baltra's remix is ready for dancefloors, official or otherwise. Listen now below and get "Falling" via Bandcamp here.

Enlightened Listening for June 4

After a week off, we return to our new music playlist in a big way. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening features fifteen releases, largely in the funky sphere, but gets further driving and dark the deeper it goes. If there is one theme, it is the guitar (bass and otherwise). The oft underused instrument plays a varied role in several of this week's standout tracks, including particularly enjoyable iterations from ARTY, Myd and Lamorn. The latter mau5trap release, along with singles from Gaspard Augé and Rampa, and minds&machines' "Resurrected" make up my favourite four tracks of the week. The final third of the playlist, which holds all of the longer releases, features the second sensational EP from Hyunji-A in as many weeks, the deadly good debut EP from Afterlife & Tale Of Us founder Anyma, and another epic delivery from Drumstone, who continue to amaze at every turn. Finally, there's a massive compilation in Interzone that features killer new content from Cardopusher, Gesaffelstein, Djedjotronic and more! Stream everything now below and find each release linked individually at the bottom.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peak: Eekkoo - Labyrinth

I just got back from a bike ride, and I can confirm it feels like June out there, and summer is most definitely on the way. Before then, we've got a couple of episodes of Bump In The Hump that return to two full hours of new Canadian electronic and dance as we put My Mixtape on a brief pause. Tonight's episode overflows with techno, trap, psytrance and a downpour of disco and DnB. We go up and down and all around, and because of that, the best tease of the episode is Eekkoo's "Labyrinth." While still immense in its essential, short edit form, Eekkoo's latest mau5trap majesty is much better enjoyed in its extended form (below). It showcases the enduring power of the piano, pulling you ever closer until you're lost forever in its captivating clutches. Get "Labyrinth" as part of new release Eleven and hear it as part of Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 PM EDT, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud.
