Enlightened Listening for November 30

We're gonna need a bigger blog. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening is maybe the most ambitious yet, highlighting 16 releases in and around this date. There's a number of releases we've been waiting patiently for (Haywyre, Krafty Kuts and Apashe) and some incredible surprises (Attlas, Robert Robert and Vessels). As always I've organized this wide ranging collection for maximum flow from more chill groove to heavy hitters in the playlist below. I'm going to get back to the short descriptions following that, but be sure to give each release a chance, they're all of the highest quality.

Tom Morello - A Higher Frequency (ft. Serj Tankian and Attlas)
Still not sure this is real life. Attlas has had one of hell of a year, but this leaves all his previous productions in the dust. Tempered, yet as resplendent as ever and that magical ability is only amplified with Tankian's truly awesome vocals. Oh yeah, and Tom Morello, he's no slouch either. One of the tracks of the year.

George Fitzgerald ft. Lil Silva - Roll Back (TOKiMONSTA Remix)
My favourite George Fitzgerald track and TOKiMONSTA has done it justice. Beautiful chill stuff.

KAYTRANADA - IT WAS MEANT 2 B
I could take or leave the other two tracks on this EP, but man this is the kind of cool Kaytranda production that just leaves me mystified. Groovy and warm, just the way I like it.

Haywyre - Panorama: Discover
This is exactly what I expected when Haywyre's return became immanent. Didn't miss a step despite two years off. Right back to fantastic form. Incredible artistry and musical abilities. Welcome back!

Krafty Kuts - Fresh Ingredients
Everything we've heard from this EP has been fire and the new additions maintain that quality. Surprising retro feels with some of the synths that make even the more chill tracks uncontrollably groovy.

Keys N Krates - Live In Toronto
Rarely is a live album better than a studio one, but this is very much so the case with Keys N Krates who first made the mark as a live band and continue to thrive through their play. They are now masters of their craft and it shows in this release. If you haven't seen them live I cannot recommend it enough.

Robert Robert - Okay Alright Okay
Last year Robert Robert blew me away with "Coolest Place In The Universe" and he's done it again with this brilliant bouncy beat. Fun and funky, and just indie enough not to feel too processed.

Ryan Davis - Obsidian (Vessels Remix)
Big epic build up. Maybe it because I've been listening to the Ed Banger Orchestral album too much, but it certainly feels like this is built the same way. An absolutely killer craftwork.

Cowboy Rhythmbox - Terminal Madness
Wickedly weird techno EP from trusted providers in Phantasy Sound. Think Mr. Oizo, Djedjotronic and Erol Alkan all wrapped in one. "Vodonik" is my favourite of the bunch.

The Reason Y - Almathea (Kevin de Vries Remix)
Another awesome, illusory production from Kevin de Vries. Try not to float off into the afterlife.

Murlo - Evaporate
A little jolt of energy as Murlo once again showcases his sensational club craftsmanship. WILD!

Various Artists - 7Wallace Sampler
As if Idris Elba didn't already have enough on his plate, his label can now boast tracks from GAWP, Golf Clap, Avesie & Cadence and more. Five equally strong tracks all in the house sphere, leaving me hard pressed to pick a favourite, although the middle three seem to be a notch above.

Anti Up (Chris Lake & Chris Lorenzo) - Hey Pablo
Could I get away with just posting the "I've fallen down and can't get up" meme? An undeniable dream-team and they did not disappoint. Not only is each track awesome but they fit together perfectly too. Not sure what we did to deserve this treat, but boy am I glad we got it.

Smalltown DJs & Dances With White Girls - Bad Behaviour (ft. SkiiTour)
It's most definitely a party. Slick, smooth bounce. The kind that will get you jumping on the floor and flying with whatever dance you feel.

Various Artists - WE ARE DEADBEATS VOL. 3
Since Deadbeats first started, they've been on the leading edge and they've done it once again. um.., Ducky, Holly, Cozway and Rome In Silver all on one release? Weird, wicked stuff all around.

Apashe - Requiem Remixes
Not only did Apashe craft some of the best bass of the year with the original release, but tapping the likes of CloZee, TenGraphs and Chuurch makes for one hell of a remix EP. Plays like a black and white horror film.

Adam Beyer & Bart Skils - Your Mind (Matroda Remix)

One of the biggest, most earworm worthy productions of the year just got kicked up a couple notches by Matroda. Absolutely menacing in its metallic, space age austerity, this take on Adam Beyer and Bart Skils "Your Mind" will leave you searching for your sanity and stability alike, as all solid ground is stripped from beneath your feet. Rocky in Matroda's new heavy machinery style delivery, the Drumcode release has become an interstellar mining mission. Think Armageddon, just instead of a drill it's a jackhammer; and yes, it's still directed by Michael Bay as Matroda's laced this production with more TNT than a Wile E. Coyote sketch. That said "Your Mind" isn't all shock and awe, it's an expertly crafted progression and interplay between the bass-line, onslaught of effects and alien atmosphere, all wrapped around hypnotizing vocals. Matroda has gone mental with this remix, and it will no doubt do all kinds of damage on the dance-floor. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Dave Summit - Street Sanity EP

One thing about our great Canadians is that they always support each other. Here I'm thinking about last year's UpNorth ADE Sampler which included the likes of CastNowski, Marco Marz and Dave Summit. This compilation just happened to be my first exposure to the latter in Dave Summit, and we saw all three of the above appear in CastNowski's episode of My Mixtape. Since then we've seen Summit release "Bassment" on Fraudulent Records before returning to UpNorth for last week's 4 track Street Sanity EP. Absolutely massive house joints dominate this EP, which may mark the young talent's arrival. Purchase via iTunes here and catch a cut in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight!Opening tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump is a 40 minute run of house, techno and disco, including the likes of Jerome Robins, LeBaron James, A-Trak and more. Later we get in touch with our synth side as we enjoy Parallels' new track with Futurecop!, my personal favourite from Honey Beard's Reverie, and another cut from Haywyre. We then end the night with a massive flurry of fire, culminating in another callback to My Mixtape in Haus Of Panda's latest on Brooklyn Fire. All that and more live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Sheck Wes - Mo Bamba (Jaydon Lewis & Afterfab Remix)

The Sheck Wes "Mo Bamba" phenomenon is an interesting one. Despite not gaining much traction after its initial release last year, it has absolutely blown up this year. So much so that A-Trak called it "the best song of the year," in response to a (since deleted) Zedd tweet. Their exchange garnered coverage by least a half dozen blogs/publications, with my favourite coming from Dee Lockett at Vulture (here), as she submits Zedd as noted music theorist and Sheck Wes as young scholar for his line "Oh! Fuck! Shit! Bitch!" Regardless of whether you think "Mo Bamba" is a mere viral, sophomoric frat banger or a brilliant slice of subversive, contemporary art, it certainly is one of the most widely recognizable and talked about tracks of the year. Personally it's not my cup of tea, but that said I've now gone two days in a row coming across remixes that I can get down to (Paul Mond's baile funk version here and the collaborative Jaydon Lewis and Afterfab flip below). All the raw, rank and wild energy of the original is still present in this mix, just jacked up - as if there were room to do that with the original. The toybox background and anthemic nature remains, but the new chopped, slapped and smashed drops will leave your head spinning the same way dancefloors explode when the original comes on. It's just a fresh enough take to keep you entertained, while still close enough to the original to allow fans to still fuck with it. Pink Floyd - One Of These Days (Soul Machine Remix)

Mondays are so blah, especially when it's cold, rainy and your SAD is kicking in. I scrolled through Soundcloud looking for something to jump-start my day but nothing was taking. None of my usual tricks were working. I just couldn't find anything to whet my appetite. That was until the third shot through my Facebook feed showed a video of David Gilmour's 2016 performance of "One Of These Days."

An obvious draw considering the title, I had to press play on one of the most underrated offerings of Pink Floyd's catalog. Almost immediately I realized this would make for one hell of a remix. All the pieces are there, but has anyone actually done them their proper service? The answer a resounding yes, and Google's algorithm had Soul Machine's masterful remix atop a long list of tributes/retakes.

While there may be more obvious or classic Pink Floyd tracks to flip, "One Of These Days" has just the right amount electronic allure to slay. Maintaining the menacing, behemoth of a bass-line and playing with the atmosphere of unease, Grenoble's Soul Machine absolutely nails this new version.

Of the more major differences in this mix, the drums and additional backing bass design are the most apparent. More fills and filtering-interplay allows for more dancing. That said this is no four on the floor techno stomper. The out of this world atmosphere breaks through on multiple occasions ushering the unholy groove back to the fore after sending tingles down your spine. Again, all that awesomeness aside, the cherry on the top, at least for me, comes in the drizzles of the Doctor Who theme and killer callback to Meddle's signature track "Echoes." While there are goofs that will comment "Sadly overworked. Doesnt [sic] need repetitive bass killer" this is indeed a masterclass in remixing, leading to comments like "first Floyd mix I really approve of." Stream below and enjoy the rest of your day.FOLLOW SOUL MACHINE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Full, Uncut Interview with OAKS

Last weekend I welcomed OAKS to the Radio Humber studios for a chat ahead of his episode of My Mixtape which airs this Saturday, November 24th at 11 PM EST. This is that conversation in full.

We discuss his introduction to electronic music; his love for weird, underground house,; the emergence of 'underground' labels in Dirtybird and Box Of Cats; the slow bleed of electronic music into the pop sphere; the new releases he's sitting on; and of course his episode of My Mixtape, which aside from Botnek is entirely made up of Toronto artists. Bump In The Hump: November 21 (Season 8, Episode 11)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Apashe x Cherry Lena - Feeling Good

John De Buck aka Apashe has had a big year. His first offering, the wild 3 track Requiem EP kept us satisfied until he tapped one of its vocalists in Black Prez for "Do It" in September. Both of those releases aside, this week may be Apashe's biggest of the year. Today he drops the video for "Majesty" with Wasiu (see here), which follows the killer cover/remix of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" alongside fellow Montreal talent in Cherry Lena. Obviously dark and destructive, the contrast in the music and vocals is what makes this take so strong. Like Requiem it's a little different from your normal fare, but the big bounding trap strides give a weightless feel much like the titular sensation of "Feeling Good." Catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, and pick it up from your favourite retailer here.Tonight's episode is truly jam packed with many of my favourite artists of the year and some of the best releases including a number of exceptional EPs from Chali 2na, Wizard Of, Lingopolus, Just John x Dom Dias, Ricco Harver, Jacques Greene and others. That selection alone should be a good indication of how wide the sounds range tonight. Closing the episode is a clip of my conversation with OAKS, ahead of his episode of My Mixtape this Saturday at 11 PM EST. Catch it all live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber or cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud here.

The Magician - Magic Tape 85

If you enjoy a mix of all things funky and electronic The Magician's Magic Tape series is always worth a listen, with this latest edition a prime exemplar. Magnificently mixed, this hour long 85th iteration sees the whiz bring an incredibly keen focus on current releases alongside the awesome alchemy these tapes are known for. Most every track is released in the last month with a few still forthcoming in an A-Trak remix of "In Arms" and originals from Dom Dolla and Boston Bun (via 1001tracklists).

More than the nuts and bolts, The Magician picks tracks that fit perfectly together, combining in a powerful progression. The steps each track change signifies is part of the greater movement that he is authoring. It's all too easy to get swept up in Jengi's vital spirit in "Ice Tea" and move to an even more scintillating substance in Cavego's "Vår I Øyer." The twisted takeover of the beyond brilliant "Beulah Loves Dancing" puts takes the mix back down to earth, but boy does the dance spirit remain, as it does throughout. That three track opening is a microcosm of this Magic Tape, especially as it begins to rebuild immediately with the massively funky march of Jarami's "No Chance."

The ups and downs come and go, but all the while the big picture moves ever forward. Huge, full bangers hit in the middle of the hour as Prospa and Cousn slam the speakers. In perhaps the best move of this whole mix The Magician moves from "Juggle" to the Weiss dub of "Missing U" dragging the tape out of the dark by the light of Robyn. That is all to say the following four tracks are unreleased, ending finally with the Moon Willis remix "Hear The Music." So truly whatever your appetite, Magic Tape 85 has the funk to fill it. Enjoy and follow The Magician's socials for more below.FOLLOW THE MAGICIAN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Ninajirachi - Gardenia (ft. Oh Boy)

Did you know that Nina Las Vegas isn't the only Nina on NLV Records putting out quality music? Also from the land down under, Ninajirachi has been sharing singles from her forthcoming Lapland EP, with the latest "Gardenia" featuring Oh Boy appearing late last week. As the Aussies are seemingly apt to do, Ninajirachi imbues this track with an incredible allure and wild sound design that captures your imagination right away. Painting a scene unlike any you've experienced in this world, "Gardenia" comes across like a dream: a safari with droves of animals singing and dancing in unison. Even though the dreamy nature of this track is obvious, there is something in the back of your head that makes it feel too good to be true; as though it were manufactured. It is this sneaky, uneasy feeling that moves "Gardenia" from potent plaything to captivating craftwork. Mystifying and masterful, get it now here and follow NLV Records below for more information on the full, forthcoming release of Lapland.FOLLOW NINAJIRACHI: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for November 16

I often start these Enlightened Listening posts the same way, talking about Friday this, Friday that. What makes this post different is that November 16th has been marked on my calendar for many reasons. It marks the highly anticipated releases of Humans, Jacques Greene and Tiga & The Martinez Brothers. It also sees the return of both Haywyre and HERO after long absences. Joining those incredible offerings is Alex Metric's marvelous remix of "Electricity," a track he helped produce, Daktyl's dazzling take on What So Not and San Holo, and ANNA's epic twist on Jon Hopkins "Singularity." Rounding out this collection is the masterful Jean-Michel Jarre with Equinoxe Infinity. Enjoy!

Humans - Going Late

Silk City ft. Dua Lipa - Electricity (Alex Metric Remix)

Haywyre - Tell Me

What So Not & San Holo ft. Daniel Johns - If You Only Knew (Daktyl Remix)

HERO - Dirty Work

Jacques Greene - Fever Focus

Jean-Michel Jarre - Equinoxe Infinity

Tiga & The Martinez Brothers - Blessed EP, Pt. 1

Jon Hopkins - Singularity (ANNA Remix)

RL Grime - Valhalla (Reaper Remix)

If there's one thing I've noticed with RL Grime's recent productions, it's that the more DnB flavour it draws the more amped I get and the more I enjoy it. Case in point this new take on Void single "Valhalla" from fresh face and fast riser Reaper. Recently Reaper's remixes of "I Do Coke" and "Into The Light" have gained serious traction with 13 rinsing out the latter in his set at REBEL (see here). All kinds of explosive energy and destruction dominate this mix, playing perfectly against the now iconic siren wail. The frantic feeling and apocalyptic soundscape fit in both RL's older style and newer output. While there's nothing like throwing up trap arms, the outpouring of energy a jacked up DnB twist brings is even better. So grab the free download from ToneDen and turn the club into the hall of the slain.FOLLOW REAPER: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Full, Uncut Interview with Honey Beard

This past weekend I had Gaz and Tom of Honey Beard back in the Radio Humber studios. The primary focus of our conversation being their forthcoming EP Reverie, out November 24th. But of course we touch on their second episode of My Mixtape which airs this Saturday the 17th at 11 PM EST.

Otherwise we touch on the following topics: Gaz's penchant for raw, real lyrics; the 'disingenuous' nature of happy songs; the themes of sleep/dreaming, water and city throughout their catalog; hiding easter eggs in their lyrics; their continuing trend of opposing upbeat music and dark lyrics; cutting back on the amount of production and drawing the vocals into the mix on Reverie; building a Patreon for b-sides and other treats; working with Whoozl for the Reverie release party with Bon Villan and Modula (RSVP/details); and of course the setup for this new episode of My Mixtape. Bump In The Hump: November 14 (Season 8, Episode 10)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Rhett & Attlas - Crater

Over the course of the year Attlas has trained my brain to expect new music from him with regularity. Seems that timer had gone off as I found myself thinking, "Jeez, I could sure go for that feeling new Attlas brings." Well thanks to Rhett's Hollow Earth, out now on mau5trap, we got that new new. "Crater" combines Rhett's robust techno builds and Attlas' always colourful and captivating cinematic arcs. At times it is wild, others entirely restrained. Sometimes shrouded in darkness, other times overflowing with warmth and light. The "Crater" in the middle of the track, and the striding egress that returns to the raucous entrance, imbues the track with an always entertaining progression. Like Tiga and Kölsch's "Still So High," it showcases the best of each artist in compelling fashion. Enjoy now below!
Catch "Crater" on Bump In The Hump tonight closing out a 30 minute run of disco, house, and techno to open the show. As always our Canadians have been cooking up a flurry of fire, with the likes of Dr. Ozi, Snails, and Sam Lamar going back to back to back. However we don't close with killer cuts, but rather synth sensations as we look ahead to Honey Beard's sophomore episode of My Mixtape, this Saturday at 11 PM EST. Supporting them not just at their November 24th Reverie EP release party at Junction City Music Hall (RSVP), Bon Villan make their Radio Humber debut courtesy Sleepycatt's remix of "When I Came Up." Catch a clip of my interview with Gaz and Tom of Honey Beard closing out tonight's episode live from 7-9 PM EST here and find it after the fact on Mixcloud here.

Supertramp - Take The Long Way Home (Lazy Syrup Orchestra Remix)

Going back to Canada's legalization date of October 17th, BC collective Lazy Syrup Orchestra offered up their remix of Supertramp classic "Take The Long Way Home" for free when said post hit the iconic 420 likes. It took a long time to achieve that milestone, but here we are with the unhurried epic edit. Opening like a sunrise slowly beaming over the horizon, bringing warmth to the world; Lazy Syrup really lean into the Orchestra bit, letting organic instrumentation lead out above the uber gooey bass builds. And that's not all the ties to the group's name as the snare sounds extra sticky. That said, none of this takes away from the allure of the remix, but rather adds to the Canadian classic, giving it new lush life. This is best enjoyed in the latter half of the track as "Take The Long Way Home" devolves into a jam session, stirring the syrupy additions and original enchantments into a dank, nostalgic concoction. Suck back the succulent sensation free via ToneDen here and follow Lazy Syrup Orchestra below.FOLLOW LAZY SYRUP ORCHESTRA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sampling As An Art - Sydmalaïde EP

Back in May I highlighted a B2B mix from Folamour and Sampling As An Art (S3A) at Radio Meuh Circus Festival (here). Now the latter has a four track EP due out this month on vinyl and December 14th digitally. Sydmalaïde on Swedish imprint Local Talk isn't exactly a hard and fast disco EP, but rather a brilliant blend of house as disco's revenge.

The first track "Premiere Rexidence" is a bouncy blissful joint, of course reliant on samples both vocal and instrumental. The chords craft a cool atmosphere, while the percussion and horns give a little shake to your step, funking up the dance-floor. Before flipping the wax, S3A turns things over to the piano for classic rolling house vibes in "End Track For A DJ." Oozing with finishing feels, the rising nature of so many of the elements in this track, particularly the angelic background vocals and strings, makes it feel like you're floating off into the ether.

Opposing the pie in the sky a-sides, the reverse of this record immediately offers up a darker atmosphere, despite the foursome's fully free and easy energy. "Searching Force" is the funkiest of the bunch, allowing a genius groove to grow out of an awesome, out-of-this-world force. It feels like a scene from a 007 film in which Bond seduces some femme fatale in an interstellar casino, before blasting off in his Jaguar spaceship to take on the bad guy. Chic, classy and oh so smooth, it is my favourite of the bunch. That said, the closing track "Deep Mood Vol 4" is no slouch. Living through its massive low-end and sensuous vocal samples, it is a lush sound bed as easily enjoyable as lying under the covers, hiding from the cold, watching your favourite romcom. S3A has found the perfect blend of disco and house in Sydmalaïde, stream below or make it yours on Bandcamp here and iTunes here.

Nelly - Ride Wit Me (Ticklish Edit)

Major nostalgia alert! Berlin bootleger extraordinaire Ticklish is once again teasing our senses with his unique brand of throwback hip-hop, rap and R&B edits. This time he's taking us back to one of the hottest hooks to arise in the early aughts, Nelly's "Ride Wit Me." Playful and tricky, this new version still leans heavily on the allure of the original, while working the classic cut into a more groove oriented, almost instrumental feel. It's chopped, screwed, flipped and flopped, giving this "Ride Wit Me" a shot of hydraulic power, bouncing the whole dance-floor like a bucking bronco. Lots of liquid energy and swagger to spare, Ticklish has delivered again. Download "Ride Wit Me" for free here.FOLLOW TICKLISH: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

warner case & Spencer Ludwig - heart dance

Back in August we received warm dance grooves courtesy warner case and "good time" with Zak Downtown. Yesterday it got a partner in the Spencer Ludwig aided "heart dance." But that's not all. Both sides of the EP are complete and with that comes a pair of music videos directed by Losmose.
This new b-side addition, "heart dance" contrasts the sheen and glow of "good time," yet shares the same beatific dance doctrine. As always warner is warm in his production and that's only boosted by Ludwig's vital tones. However, the best of warner's habits is imbuing his tracks with life and "heart dance" surely lives and breathes. Obviously a heart dancing is a good thing, not just literally but in the lyrical/visual delivery. All that said, the most important part of this piece is the climactic trumpet solo. Both cinematically, and as the sonic protagonist, its explosive, repetitive pulses mimic a heart at full force, before eventually falling into a more swinging groove. All of these ingredients, cinematic and otherwise, both tracks included, are complete in unison (except that you need a playlist for the videos)  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
