Bump In The Hump: October 11 (Season 7, Episode 2)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Wraz - Spin

There's just something about Canadians and dark bass tracks. Whether it's a result of the weather, lack of sunlight or something entirely different, there's no shortage of sinister sounds being produced by Canucks. Of course there's the queen of darkness herself, Rezz, and No Neon don, Hunter Siegel, but equally ominous and infernal is Sherbrooke's Wraz. We've heard him twice here on Bump In The Hump, but this week he's back with his most inventive and ingenious production to date. "Spin" was created entirely through his recordings of a fidget spinner. All the elements: kicks, bass, snare; everything is the sound of a fidget spinner, not one single synth. This is an incredible achievement, very much so in line with the ethos of electronic music; it's about experimentation and the manipulation of atypical sounds and instruments into a more typical track. Wraz's passion for producing is clear, not just in "Spin," but the relentless rate at which new tracks are released. Stream it below and follow him here.As you might expect, there's a hearty helping of heinous and all around dark tracks on Bump In The Hump tonight. But fear not, there's a sizable serving of sublime and soulful disco and funky feels. Big names include Pat Lok, Tennyson, Daphni, Ramzoid, Snails, CRaymak and Botnek. Plus we look forward to a couple incredible shows with a remix of Sinjn Hawke, and a killer beat from Eytan Tobin, who joins the Fractal Fantasy bill Friday night. In addition I've got a remix of Keys N Krates who join the star studded lineup for RELIEF, tonight at Velvet Underground. As always you won't want to miss the epic amount of new music from our great, albeit aphotic, Canadians. Bump In The Hump runs live from 6-8 PM EDT on Radio Humber, stream here, or after the fact via Mixcloud, here.

2017's Inaugural Electronic Music Awards (Preview)

I've written about the Grammys and Junos before, focusing on their electronic categories, but always lament the lack of coverage they get, as both opt to announce those winners on their side shows. I've since wondered whether we should care about these award shows at all, since they so often leave a bad taste in our mouths (fans and artists alike). Everyone one knows about the DJ Mag Top 100 lists and the controversies they entail, particularly the so called "DJ" list that in the end is a popularity contest among producers, not DJs. Perhaps as a protest, two new award shows have arisen: The Goldie Awards (backed by A-Trak and THUMP, focusing on DJ and Beat Battles) and The Electronic Music Awards (backed by Paul Oakenfold and TV4, showcasing all that is electronic music). For the purposes of this post, I'll focus on the latter as the anticipation grows in the 3 weeks prior to the event.

Originally announced in January of 2016, as the Electronic Music Awards and Foundation Show, and set for broadcast on FOX, this seemed as large and legitimate as anyone could possibly hope. However in the following months the event was postponed for more than a year, renamed and relegated to a Twitter broadcast. The previously 7 categories have grown to 11, and the winners will be announced live September 21st starting at 7:47 PM PDT. So now let's take a look at those categories and their nominees. Note that I won't be making predictions today, but merely digging into the categories and nominations themselves. See the image below or find the direct link to the noms here.
As you can plainly see, the list of names here is absolutely packed with powerhouse producers, deserving DJs, and awesome artists. The organizers have done a good job of separating categories from Producer of the Year to DJ of the Year, and Live Act of the Year. However I wonder about the New Artist of the Year category, as arguably every act has been big since early 2016, if not before then. But since this is the first edition, I'll give them a little leeway in what new means.

Looking through this list it's clear that the same people who would argue that award shows are mainstream, could easily make that argument again here. There are no names that I'm unfamiliar with. It's absolutely jam packed with big names, but at least to their credit those big names come from all over the place. It's not just top 40 radio wannabes or techno titans. There's deep house, hip hop, electro and of course, what continues to be the style of the moment, future bass.

As always I wonder about how these names were chosen, and further how the winners will be decided. The official statement is that "nominees and winners are voted on by sixty-seven members who were selected to represent all aspects of the electronic music community, in a two-round voting process." But who selected these members? And how well are they balanced? Now, I don't mean to claim that there's collusion or foul play, I just always advocate for more transparency. And no matter what people will bitch and moan about this or that. The positive (and value of any award show) is to showcase worthy talent. Sure you can claim that some of these artists need no more showcasing, but their impact is undeniable, and ought to be recognized as such. Now back to those categories.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sevla - Bandits

It's been about half a year between releases for Toronto's Sevla, but the man is back with a bonafide banger. "Bandits" sees Sevla transition from the "TRVP GOD" description on his soundcloud to a house head. But this isn't your typical house track, its bass driven along the lines Malaa or even fellow Canadians: CastNowski, CYMN and Audiation; the latter two are also represented on this episode. After last week's more laidback summer themed edition of Bump In The Hump, the Radio Humber airwaves are set to feel the pure technological terror of an hour of power. If "Bandits" is any indication, Selva seems set to spark fires all summer long. Download/Stream via MMXVAC.
Tonight's episode features remixes from Rezz, WHIPPED CREAM, and the sixth edition of CRaymak's First of the Month series. As well as a remix of Sinjin Hawke, there's incredible originals from AGNO3, Ramzoid, and Shifting Black. Finally we look ahead to My Mixtape with a 10 minutes of my conversation with Tom and Gary of Honey Beard who are set to host Friday night at 11. Don't miss tonight's all new hour of Canadian electronic music live from 6-7 PM EDT.

Bump In The Hump Season Six Premiere

Bump In The Hump is back on Radio Humber's main feed, 96.9 FM, for good starting tonight with the season six premiere. As always the focus remains on the newest releases from across the country, regardless of genre. Join me in discovering what our Canadian producers have cooked up every Wednesday. Stay tuned for more new interviews and guest mixes on My Mixtape, Fridays at 11 PM.

As a sneak peek at this week's episode I've got the new intro that'll be kicking off each hour. As usual the first minute is comprised of some of my favourite cuts from last season. This time it includes: Ramzoid, CastNowski, Botnek, Autoerotique and Kastra's remix of Nelly Furtado. Stream below. As always the tracklist, with links to each track, can be found on this blog, posted as the episode goes live at 6 PM EDT. For streaming after the fact, each episode is posted to mixcloud by the next day.

Stream live direct here or through www.radio.humber.ca

I've always had my choice of quality tracks to play on Bump In The Hump, but the trend of me having to cut some out each week continues. I really do agree that we're in a golden age of music (Colin's take on FUXWITHIT convinced me), and I think this show is the perfect example of that. It is always a mix of the biggest names, garnering millions of plays, and bedroom artists, just making beats. Electronic music is the most flexible medium, allowing magic to arise in infinite ways.

This week is no different. It's the first episode of the month, and CRaymak has been at it again; as has Attlas. Michael Sparks and LOUDPVCK hooked up over the phone. Blu J graced Deadbeats. Fahjah flipped a classic. Again on Bump In The Hump, we also get new Internet Daughter and Noahplause. You won't want to miss these dope tracks or the others I've saved for next week!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Grandtheft - Easy Go Remixes

April 19th marks the official release of, what I'm confident in calling the best remix package of 2017, Grandtheft's "Easy Go." Mad Decent tasks 3 of Toronto's most trusted producers, and a smash talent from Poland in Pham, to take on vocals of yet another Toronto talent, Delaney Jane. Just the prospect of using the immaculate elements of the original is enticing, but having 4 equally diverse and alluring productions is not an easy task. Exactly why this remix compilation is so good.

We had inklings that it was going to be a star studded lineup when previews of both Shaun Frank and Hunter Siegel's contributions surfaced in January. Each delivered extraordinarily, crafting killer mixes in own masterful styles. However, the surprise in my eyes is with Grandtheft's VIP and Pham's incredible re-imagining. Like we saw with Vanic's VIP of "Toon Soon," Grandtheft transforms "Easy Go" in an epic way, with drops that are like an atom bomb on the original's cool ease. Pham too comes close to abandoning the original, reinventing it with old school synths as though pulled out of a 80s film; but in a tripped out, slowed down way. There are no misfires on this release, it's one I'll be hitting up a lot, for a long time. I've been wanting to play Hunter's mix since Stephen Kazumi used it in his video for The Hoxton finale. In light of that, you can expect to hear it tonight on Bump In The Hump.Joining that Torontonian trio, I've got one of the most stacked playlists in Bump In The Hump history. Making it even better, 11 of the 15 tracks are available free. So tune in to Radio Humber live from 6-7 PM EDT, to catch remixes from Ramzoid, Whipped Cream and Rene LaVice, originals from Lukav, IDGVF, Juelz, Pat Lok, plus a track from Fil Jackson's The Uptown EP set to be released on 4/20.
