Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: The Weeknd - Blinding Lights (Nick AM's Break The Lights Remix)

Picking up where we left off last week, tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump opens with another half hour of house, headlined by deadmau5 delivery "Nextra." After our early feast on the lifeblood of electronic, we're then primed for a speed run through a bunch of bangers, including a ridiculous run of exhilarating, high-octane heat. Opening up said section of blistering breaks is Nick AM's take on The Weeknd's smash "Blinding Lights." Keeping the core of the original intact while leveraging the all too infectious melody, this remix works to perfection with its new, careening percussion-driven bed. In fact, this new stellar scene works wonders with the tracks around it in tonight's mix, taking the show deeper into the ever-expanding universe of Canadian electronic and dance. Sparkling like the North Star, let Nick AM's remix guide you into the unknown below, and get it free here. Catch it in the mix tonight, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.

Enlightened Listening for March 26

Another week down means another edition of Enlightened Listening. While I've taken a bit of a writing hiatus, that doesn't mean I've stopped listening to music, thankfully so, as this week's haul features more than 100 tracks and eight hours of music.

There's a ton of DnB, starting with perhaps my most anticipated release of the year (one I've been waiting nearly a year for), Plantium Breaks' brilliant and energizing affair Everything. They're followed by another exceptional single from Low:r, who is in turn followed by albums from Hospital, with their stacked H25PITAL compilation, and Tyr Kohout, who delivers a dynamic debut.

Mixing things up a bit, Night Bass brings some bright new talent to their roster with Hans Glader's groovy Lumen EP. Even more groovy and electrifying, Proc Fiskal's Lothian Buses will have you bristling with bass, the same way Overmono's latest "Pieces Of 8" will have you in awe. And from awe-inspiring to yawn-inducing (in a good way), we get two downtempo/chill albums from Eli Escobar and Zeds Dead.

Starting anew, the middle fifth of this week's playlist moves through progressive and melodic house, including Grigoré on This Never Happened and two EPs from FiveP, of which Quantum most captured my attention. Another highlight arises shortly thereafter as five more tremendous talents remix BRONSON. And here I have to wonder about the TSHA remix, which shares an obscene amount of the same DNA as her Gabrielle Aplin-led original "Change." I love that track, but it's a bit strange seeing it used here as a remix, no? Anyway, we're in for a whole bunch of love and life in the final seven releases...

A trio of touching originals opens this final section as Franky Wah, Dombresky and Moullinex each work with exceptional vocalists (LOWES, Camden Cox and Selma Uamusse, respectively), delivering diverse yet, equally awesome productions. Following immediately after is our final remix of the playlist, pitting legendary MGMT against legendary Metronomy. And yes, the result is as cool as you'd expect. Now, before we weep to Kele (Okereke of Bloc Party fame) and "Smalltown Boy," we're treated to a couple life-giving originals from The Magician x Wuh Oh and Dimitri From Paris x Fiorious. While the former is more of your typical 'EDM' fare, the latter is as lush and 'organic' as it gets.

Stream the weekly new music playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Three BOMB ASS HOUSE Tracks

Not only was last week's episode of Bump In The Hump heavy on the bangers, but it was also light on the heart and soul of electronic music, house. Staying four on the floor for the final hour, tonight's all-new episode features fresh house cuts from Cloverdale and Vibrancy, Glass Petals on Heldeep, Lewis Funktion on BADLQQK, and indeed, three BOMB ASS HOUSE tracks. Quickly becoming one of the most reliable outlets for underground house, the imprint has been on quite an impressive run as of late. With equally thick and turnt numbers coming from Prayer Handz, SHEPS and Reezy in the last couple of months, BOMB ASS HOUSE is set to bring Bump In The Hump to its knees tonight. Stream the three tracks now below and catch them live in the mix tonight from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here. Enlightened Listening for March 19

Another Friday means it's time for another Enlightened Listening. This week's edition clocks in at just under four hours, running 55 tracks deep. Centred around albums from Dezza and OVERWERK, there's a trio of utterly infectious cuts from Jacques Greene, Todd Edwards and Folamour, as well as BIJOU's banging return to Night Bass (my favourite EP there in many months). Staying with the heavy stuff, the final four releases in the playlist, while diverse, each overflow with energy and bristle with bass. Returning to the top, the playlist opens with three-way collab "Ride Or Die," which I can almost guarantee will appear across year-end best-of lists. Boys Noize and Chily Gonzales is a potent pairing in itself, while Kelsey Lu's vocals are simply sublime. Finally, filling in the gaps are a fistful of remixes, including an immersive epic from Volen Sentir, and a trio of EPs from EMBRZ, HNTR and Afterlife. Stream the playlist, ordered for maximum flow, below and find each individual release at the bottom.

Bump In The Hump: March 17 (Season 9, Episode 63)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: six impala - 6FINGERDEATHPUNCH

After our so-called Coronaversary episode last week, we've got one of our hardest this week as we rage, rage, rage into the night. Following epics from CFCF and Caribou, Bump In The Hump's second-hour starts with six impala and "6FINGERDEATHPUNCH," which in turn sends the whole show into a flurry of fire that includes all kinds of bass, trap, dubstep, and DnB.

From the massive FORM All Nighter Vol. 6 compilation, in which 800+ artists spent 24 consecutive hours creating tracks for Prevent Child Abuse America, "6FINGERDEATHPUNCH" showcases six impala in rare form. Always difficult to define, the band lay down perhaps their cleanest and most direct production to date. That said, the essence of six impala can be found throughout the track, especially as they tweak the vocals and play with the sound effects that remind me of NES classic Kung Fu.

Stream "6FINGERDEATHPUNCH" now, get it via the FORM compilation here, and catch on Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud.

Enlightened Listening for March 12

Once again we've had an incredible week of releases, making for a massive edition of Enlightened Listening. Stretching past the seven-hour mark while coming in just at just less than 100 tracks, the new music playlist is built upon a handful of long-form projects and several sensational singles.

Thematically, the first six releases fit together under the progressive house/trance umbrella. We open with the culmination of two teased albums from CRi and Sultan + Shepard, the latter showcasing the duo in top form. With a similar sentiment, ASHE is on the top of his game with Strangers Dream which features "Stay," a quintessential ASHE production, and two truly sublime slices in "Earth Room"& "Bleeding Heart." Later, TDJ whets our appetite for TDJ002 with dreamy delivery "Lalala."

Next up, London Grammar grace us with a new obsession-worthy single in the hook-driven "How Does It Feel." Hot on the heels of that heavenly offering are two more moving groovers in Jayda G's gorgeous remix of Rhye and Friend Within's equally fabulous LP Hope. Turning more tech-driven, Morgan Geist's masterful remix of Marie Davidson leads us down the ever-darker, more intense and driving backend of this playlist. From the at times bright and groovy designs of Black Loops and Doss to the scorching DnB of Denham Audio, Sleepnet and John Rolodex, this playlist never lacks power. As if taking that last statement as a challenge, the playlist runs right off the rails with the unhinged energy and brutal bangers of ALRT, Dion Timmer, HNTR and Dropwizz. Stream the weekly new music playlist (mixed for optimal flow) below, find each of the releases linked individually after the jump and enjoy!

COVID: 19 Records I Rinsed This Year

Today marks my one-year anniversary with COVID. One year ago today, the president was addressing the nation on the TVs in the Radio Humber studio as I was in the middle of Bump In The Hump, receiving countless messages about the NBA shutting down. Of course, our lives were all in for a major change, staying inside and isolated more than ever before. Luckily, I've always revelled in staying home and immersing myself in music. However, I quickly found a limit to my ability to enjoy an endless stream of new music, realizing I needed to mix things up in order to keep myself entertained. And that's where this list comes in.

Like a sonic rinse cycle, these nineteen records (single tracks and full albums) were my most go-to palette cleansers in this most unprecedented of years. The range is ridiculous as you might expect and entirely unintentionally, features music made prior to the millennium. Many of these records I first encountered this year, while a handful of others became much closer to my heart as I enjoyed them more immensely than ever. They were and, in many cases, are still literal obsessions of mine. What it is that makes them so special ranges from heartening lyrical content to incredibly catchy vocals or just plain, undeniable energy. I can't tell you how many times I sang along to these in the shower, used them to tear up a hill on my bike or danced to them as I did the dishes. Hopefully, you too can put these records to good use. Find the Spotify playlist below and note that it features the original album tracklists, rather than the extended/deluxe types that are part of the list of links after the jump. Enjoy!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Tame Impala - It Might Be Time (Bensley Edit)

Today marks the three hundred and sixty-fourth day since I last stepped foot in the Radio Humber studios. While unfortunately, it is not the day I make the return there, "It Might Be Time" for Bensley's edit of Tame Impala. Played by Netsky in last month's UKF On Air, the bootleg is a brilliant example of Bensley's ability to be both groovy and banging. He keeps much of the style that makes Tame Impala so cool while adding his bristling bass and electro intensity. The drums and keys still dazzle, but instead of floating along like a lazy river, it careens like a cataract. And there's no denying that this new raucous and radiant resplendence works exceptionally well. Ride on the rippling rainbow strength of Bensley's edit of "It Might Be Time" below, get it free here and catch in on Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Biesmans - Trains, Planes & Automobiles

Belgian-born Biesmans has not only found a literal home in Berlin, but he's also found a home for his music there too. His debut on Watergate RecordsTrains, Planes & Automobiles, features two originals alongside a Fideles remix. Those unfamiliar with Biesmans' sound will immediately notice his penchant for producing splashy, prismatic, synth-driven tracks. Whether labelled indie, disco, house, or simply electronic, every one of Biesmans' tracks has an undeniable 80s allure. Playing into that theme, this new Watergate release harkens back to John Hughes' 1987 classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Like the EP's inspiration, the title track has movement at its core, propelling itself ever forward. First, it chugs like a locomotive before breaking through the clouds, soaring high above it all, eventually coming back to earth only to get stuck in traffic, accosted by a chorus of car horns. Again like the EP's inspiration, the title track perfectly straddles the line between slapstick and sentimentality, thriving through its killer chemistry.

Following "Trains, Planes & Automobiles" is the Fideles remix which, if we're to stick to the old movie metaphors, feels like it fits more in the 90s. With a new breakbeat bed and industrial energy, it becomes grittier and altogether more brooding, shrouding the scintillating synth work in a thick fog. And from that darkness emerges the final piece of this retro trifecta, "Save The Night." A triumphant affair, its driving groove emulates the horizon, hiding the sun's radiance until its glorious glimmers finally grace our skin. The warmth of "Save The Night" rests right beneath the surface, threatening to break through at any moment, and when it does with the vocal hooks and swirling synths, there is little better feeling. It is like dancing in the rain, revelling in each resplendent drop.

NHYX - Technicolor

Soundcloud's The Upload comes through again. This morning, I was turned on to Parisian producer NHYX and "Technicolor," the second single from his forthcoming French touch EP. Following the dazzling display of "Soulclap," this new piece shines through its sublime strings and ever-growing groove. With a warm, wistful opening, "Technicolor" is a brilliant balm for your morning malaise, easing you ever so gently into the swing of things. There's no big payoff or head-turning twist, but it doesn't need that. Rather, "Technicolor" thrives through its subtleties, letting each swirl of the strings or bump of the bass play its part in the hearty whole. Splendid and salubrious, its reticent radiance is all kinds of invigorating. Tackle the day with "Technicolor" via Bandcamp here and follow NHYX below.

LeBRON - Open Up

Much like the inaugural edition of Yacht Disco Edits, the most recent compilation opens with Melbourne-to-Paris transplant Sam Roney, aka LeBRON. And like that first track, "Waiting," this new Too Slow To Disco release is all kinds of enrapturing. Maybe it's because of the album artwork, but there's just something so warm and soothing about "Open Up," as though it were the essence of the sun's golden hour glory.

Filling the air with his fabulous grooves, LeBRON's genius laps at the shore with resplendent swells that are sure to buoy your spirits. Uplifting indeed, "Open Up" is a perfect fit for Too Slow To Disco as it bounds along beautifully, as though gravity has been turned down a notch or two. With each ascension, you shed a shackle, becoming lighter and freer, more hopeful and enthusiastic. It certainly gave me that feeling yesterday as I was finally able to ride my bike outside after a year-long-month of being stuck on a stationary bike. And I mean, how could you not feel as light as a feather while soaking in these sublime sounds and radiant rays?

Stream "Open Up" on Soundcloud below, get it as part of the 3a edition of Yacht Disco Edits via Bandcamp here and return to the Too Slow To Disco page tomorrow (March 5th) for the 3b edition.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Simon Doty - The Beacon EP

While Simon Doty first appeared on Bump In The Hump way back in 2018, last year was really his coming-out party. He appeared on seven different episodes (eight, if you include the Best Of) with tracks on popular labels Anjunadeep, Knee Deep In Sound and Last Night On Earth. This past Friday, he returned to Hot Since 82's imprint for brilliant The Beacon EP, and one of those two tracks stands tall in the middle of tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump. Featuring sublime slow-burning grooves and poignant piano play, both of these buoyant productions beckon you into their resplendent swells. Where "The Beacon" opens with august energy and promise, "In Your Feelings" infects its listeners with its eminent and inspiring groove, getting even the most reticent raver to rock their body back and forth. Stream The Beacon via Soundcloud below, find it elsewhere here, and catch it on Bump In The Hump live tonight from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud.

GoGo Penguin - Atomised (Machinedrum Remix)

Among the coolest creations I've heard all year, Machinedrum has got my March off to an excellent start with his remix of GoGo Penguin's "Atomised." Now, I'm not sure which 'discovery' I'm more excited about, this remix or the Manchester-based trio. The remix is all kinds of awesome with its radiant energy, beautiful breaks and impressive piano, but it's not as though these are new to "Atomised." In fact, Machinedrum more or less leverages the quality of the original in his enthralling remix.

A listen back to the original reveals the awe-inspiring genius of GoGo Penguin's performers: pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. Both the eponymous album version and the Live From Studio 2 version are stunning displays of musicianship, playing together impeccably well while showcasing the life inherent in their productions. And it is that last point that makes the Machinedrum remix such an exhilarating and admirable offering. The life of "Atomised" remains intact in this remix; in fact, Machinedrum gives it even more life as though upgrading your character's gear in a sci-fi video game. Even further, you could see it as an expansion pack, taking the track to new, more technologically advanced worlds with more flashy and electrifying animations. And this lush Machinedrum level is one I'll certainly be replaying over and over again.

Taking advantage of the already scintillating original, Machinedrum's remix of "Atomised" is sure to inject some much-needed energy on this Monday. Get it via Soundcloud below or elsewhere here.
