Full, Uncut Interview with Meech of RYME

Last Wednesday I had BADLQQK boss and one half of RYME, Meech join me for a chat in the Radio Humber studios. At least our third interview, we've perhaps grown too comfortable as this hour long chat is very loose and conversational. That said, Meech treated those courageous listeners who make it all the way through to some interesting stories, little nuggets, and tea. Broad topics include: the history & rise of BADLQQK, getting support and/or working with Carl Cox, Don Rimini & MSTRKRFT, taking BADLQQK & RYME around the world, how RYME became RYME, what's next for BADLQQK & RYME, and of course their new episode of My Mixtape, which airs this Saturday at 11 PM EDT.FOLLOW RYME: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump: September 26 (Season 8, Episode 3)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Subject 31 - Incoming EP

In my conversation with Allan Eggert aka Kryojen (listen here), we talked about the incredible quality of dubstep being created these days, and while neither of us would call dubstep our favourite genre, there's no denying the breadth of brilliant bass coming from Canada. Fittingly last week's episode of Bump In The Hump played host to perhaps my favourite run of dubstep tracks to date. Once again we've got top notch dubstep lined up for this week's episode, highlighted by a track from Subject 31's new five track Incoming EP, released this past Friday on Disciple Round Table. Stream now below. Also in tonight's dubstep section are powerhouse producers Apashe, INF1N1TE, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Exclusion, and GDubz x Spok. As usual there's also a hearty helping of house, flipping the script by opening with the more banging stuff and closing with the groovier cuts, culminating with RYME and a clip of my conversation with of half of the duo in Meech. There's also a number of tracks I've already showcased on this blog, but like Subject 31 above, you'll have to tune in to find out which ones. Catch all that and more as I get you set for the weekend which includes shows from SOPHIE, 1788-L, and BlackGummy, with Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber. If you can't make it live, worry not, as each episode is cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Boy 8-Bit - Raw Square / Fractal

This weekend while watching the sunset at Paradise In The Park during Four Tet's spectacular set, a familiar and incredibly unique sound started to break through the mix. It was that of Boy 8-Bit's brilliant "Action Break," which led to a further rush of endorphins as the crowd and I all lost our minds led by the unearthly, disco android genius. Flash back two days before that and my mind was already on Boy 8-Bit as he tweeted about a Roska Kicks & Snares release, which I was sadly unable to find. But today that UK Funky twosome sat atop my Facebook feed with Youtube previews posted below.

The a-side, "Raw Square" sees Boy 8-Bit ease us in with his typical crunchy percussive breaks before his sensational synths join the jungle of sound. Slowly sprinkle in some cheeky vocal samples and splices, an additional layer of cool, underlying chords, mix them all up and we're quite literally laughing. But as always, the best bits of a Boy 8-Bit production come in the second half as we get the rebuild, replenishing each element with a more warped and potent punch. Sliding seamlessly through sounds, we get that great raw Boy 8-Bit ethos via sick synth squelches and crisp, crackling design, with a distinctly funky, human feel. That organic feel arises again in the b-side, this time with an alien allure.
Sharing much of the same DNA, "Fractal" is a touch more spacious, and more drum driven than its predecessor. It feels as though you're in the science lab aboard a space ship, with a collection of wild samples and crackling electricity as experiments take place. Again it shows Boy 8-Bit's brilliance in blending the lead line and breaks, mixing them back and forth, leading to the same effect on the dance floor. It oozes with this classic rave vibe, a crowded club as feet fly and hips move in every direction at once, all under the spell of this strange, supernatural synth strain. Get the genius concoction that is Raw Square / Fractal, released Friday on Roska Kicks & Snares via Bandcamp here.

T-Bow - Tom Selleck

What was old is new again, reboots are everywhere, and disco funk is fresh af. French disco voyager and funk aficionado, T-Bow has capitalized on both with "Tom Selleck," a track which seems to share DNA with the now rebooted Magnum, P.I.'s theme song. Laying hard into the synths and bass, while letting the guitar riff flutter and soar, this is pure 80s power. The potency of the synths stimulate all hair follicles, filling your upper lip with wiry whiskers, and busting a bushel of burgeoning fibers out of your exposed chest. You suddenly feel the urge to find that floral shirt from the deep corners of your closet, throw it on, and jump on the next flight to Hawaii, just so you fly down the coast in your classic Ferrari. Pressing play on "Tom Selleck" turns you into Thomas Magnum. And just like the namesake character, disco funk can be critically injured (seemingly dead) only to return for another season, new series, or the renaissance as we're seeing today. Kick your week into gear and pick up "Tom Selleck" via Bandcamp.FOLLOW T-BOW: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for September 21

Holy funky Friday Batman! What another blessed week for releases. There's killer tracks from Apashe, Boys Noize, Chris Lake, along with the resurrections of both The Dove and Nicky Da B. A masterful album from Ryan Hemsworth. A mindblowing midtempo compilation from some of the best in the game plus funk from NAMPA, Midas Hutch and 2ToneDisco. Stream this week's Enlightened Listening in the playlist below, read brief descriptions, grab free downloads where available and enjoy!

NAMPA - Babymood
What's in the water that makes the French so funky? This one has me smiling from ear to ear, as both the vocals and production tickle my heartstrings. Feels like Aeroplane's mix of "The Piper's Song."

Midas Hutch - The Feels
We've already heard (and fallen in love) with a couple of these cuts, but six tracks are truly a treat, nailing the EP's title. Perfect for a sunset stream, sharing some drinks with friends.

Ryan Hemsworth - Elsewhere
This man can do it all, and this album is perfect proof of that fact. Just look at the number of tracks and artists, and the overall quality of each. Indie and pop at the same time. And those switch ups, damn!

MEMBA - Stand Off (ft. Ehiorobo)
These guys have been on the come up for a while so it's awesome to see them on Monstercat. While I continue to grow less and less interested in future bass, there's no arguing the killer quality of MEMBA's sound design, nor their ability to work with and around vocalists.

2ToneDisco - Love Automatica (ft. Chandler Blasé)*
So funky chiptune disco you say? No wonder I'm on board. Even when it's drawn back and Blasé takes the lead I can't help but tap my toes. Then when it all comes together, that's true love.

A-Trak ft. Todd Terry - DJs Gotta Dance More (Cassius Burnin' Mix)
Took me a bit to dig the last mix of this track, but when I heard the 15 second teaser for this one I immediately knew this was going to be for me. Legends on legends on legends. Sure to get more than just the DJs dancing, I can see everyone from the security to the bar staff grooving out to this.

Chris Lake & Green Velvet - Deceiver
Did someone say legends? Because we've got another killer collab here. Clean yet dirty. Simple yet strong. No big surprises here just another potent production to add to each of these veterans' catalogs.

Apashe - Do It (ft. Black Prez)
Is this really the first Apashe original since Requiem? Clearly he's been perfecting this and it shows. Another unreal ominous soundscape with viscous, violent drops and a dope vocal delivery.

Various Artists - Blood Moon*
Of the seven artists on this EP, I've covered or played everyone except No Etiquette, but their track has me digging for more. All these tracks reek of destruction, despair, dread, death and other dark D words.

The Dove - Vault Traxx
Hold up! The Dove is back?! It's hard to match the viral quality of "Girl At A Party With Siren" but these two new tracks are both in the same vein as that original Twin Turbo release. Pure party power.

Wuki - Go Deep (ft. Nicky Da B)
There have been a handful of tracks with this name, but Wuki may have just won the title with this banger. The bass line is wicked sick, sure to have you moving at one hell of a clip, and might just leave the whole club jumping as it slaps stupid strong.

Boys Noize - Killer (ft. Stephen A. Clark)
Last year Seal and Adamski's acid house classic got new life with an incredible orchestral touch from Pete Tong and Jules Buckley, now Boys Noize has brought it back to the executionary electronic sphere. Full of life with Clark's vocals and that perfect piano touch which opposes the exceptionally dark drums and cut-throat chords.  Some classics will never die and this one deserves to live on in eternity.

Full, Uncut Interview with Allan Eggert (Kryojen)

This past weekend I reconnected with Allan Eggert, who shows off another side of his musical oeuvre as Kryojen, this week's guest on My Mixtape. We've already heard his episode as KVIII (here), and while I was under the impression that was his more house centric project, it turns out Kryojen has a forthcoming house track. We once again tackle this divide in our conversation below, along with an update on Curvv, his cheeky "Modern Bass" genre tag on "Sand Castles," the heaps of unreleased Kryojen material (much of which you can hear in his mix), his work with new band Normal Machine, and of course his episode of My Mixtape which airs Saturday at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber.FOLLOW KRYOJEN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Paradise In The Park

While we seem to have turned to corner into club season, the weather seems to be saying there's still time for one more outdoor extravaganza. Enter Paradise In The Park. Woodbine Park plays host to Jamie Jones, Four Tet, Art Department, Ali Black and Jonathan Rosa, who all hit the decks for one final Sunday Funday. In case you missed it, I've got a pair of tickets to give away, but you'll have to tune into Bump In The Hump and follow me on Twitter @OggieJames to win. I will however give you one hint, and it's in the playlist of tracks from artists playing the park, below. Also on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, we look ahead to shows from No Mana, Said The Sky, and Downlink. Mr. Sosa - Flashback

There is something incredibly comforting about nostalgic lo-fi house and that comes through in droves on the first release from new label Viceworks. Courtesy Mr. Sosa, a DJ/producer devoted to that field, "Flashback" is full of that indescribable magic: strange and superfluous samples, drums that tickle and tease, synths swells that make us swoon, and a melody that slowly melts into your mind. It's transportive, bringing back a foggy memory of some lost night at a club, ushering in a relapse of endorphins. It feels like walking on a cloud, floating through an ethereal soundscape. It may not be a killer club track, but it's a serene, satisfying one. Download "Flashback" free via Bandcamp here.FOLLOW MR. SOSA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bunji Garlin x Busta Rhymes - Drop It (prod. 1st Klase)

Usually I try to focus on new music, except for the odd Throwback Thursday post, but this weekend I came across a track that had me falling all over myself. Released at the end of last month, "Drop It" is a track like no other, pitting the fire flows of Bunji Garlin and Busta Rhymes atop a 1st Klase production.

There's really no need to explain the quality of either Bunji or Busta, both are masters of their craft with not just an uncanny ability to spit lyrics like a machine gun but inject incredible inflection and intensity into each syllable. And while both have showcased these stunning skills across dozens of tracks, I feel "Drop It" may be both at their best, or at least most versatile.

A mix of soca and jersey club, 1st Klase's production is as rapid fire fun as the aforementioned flows. There's tons of back and forth interaction between both the production and the vocals. Bed squeaks come and go, directed by the potent percussion, massive bass boofs, and spiraling soca lead line. It's almost as if all three artists are going super saiyan at the same time, bursting into flame, lighting the dance-floor ablaze at the same time. That said this is no herky, jerky banger, it's smooth and polished, as 1st Klase puts on a pop production clinic, carving out a space for each element perfectly.

After several listens on the subway late Saturday night, I was awestruck at the interplay and use of the stereo field, pitting the two voices against each other, ultimately bringing them back together. Even the one time Busta's gravelly intensity leads into Bunji's more smooth delivery strikes me as a brilliant blend of the two, literally tying the two influences together through the Busta line "give them soca."

Sure, some of the lines may be 1) incomprehensible, 2) nonsensical gibberish or 3) sophomoric, but this is not meant to be a philosophical treatise. "Drop It" is a full-time fire dance track and there's no question it delivers on that. It is a dizzying display of both production prowess and vocal viciousness. Who would have ever thought we'd hear Busta doing soca, but here we are and I'm still stunned at how good it is. Purple Disco Machine @ CODA

Friday night I finally crossed out one of the names at the top of my must see list, as Purple Disco Machine brought his blend of disco funk, soul house to CODA. With disco's popularity seeing a surge, there's been few who have benefited more than PDM, who has been ablaze behind the decks and in the studio over the past year plus. He's been on big time BBC slots in Ibiza and the Essential mix, as well as authoring chart topping originals and remixes. Really this was the perfect storm, and it certainly came to life at CODA Friday night.

The atmosphere was palpable immediately upon arrival as the now typical all black outfits were much fewer and far between as the line at the door was littered with bright, floral patterns. People were giddy to get in and meet up with their friends, and questions as to what tracks Purple Disco Machine would drop arose as the anticipation to take the floor became more real. Upon entering we were welcomed with a new stacked wall of speakers at the back end of dancefloor, essentially enclosing the square with surround sound. CODA has always been known for good sound, but this certainly cements its status as the spot to be.

Already busy an hour before Purple Disco Machine's set, Simon Jain was doing a great job getting the groove started. Sporting a bright ice cream cone patterned tank top and flanked by half disco balls, Simon spun smooth disco house numbers full of string swells, funky bass lines and dope drum grooves. I nearly melted when he took to Yuksek's remix of L'Imperatrice "Vacances," yet this was just the beginning as PDM was soon to follow.

When the familiar face of Purple Disco Machine and his own floral outfit emerged in the booth and the transition became immanent, the crowd cheered thanking Simon Jain and roared in anticipation of PDM's presence on the decks. Building slow and strong the groove and warmth of his set was omnipresent as he offered the perfect blend of nostalgic feels and contemporary production potency. He broke out many of his own productions and a number of repackaged classic samples, all to great appeal.

One of my favourite things about disco and house sets is their long form, extended dance sections. These oppose the kinds of sets happening at Lost Lands this weekend, where its more about rapid-fire drops and banging bass blows. Here you can come and go more, drift in and out of tracks, always able to rejoin the reliable dependable four on the floor presence. You can explore the club and the space, no need to drop everything and run to the floor to go crazy to the drop, just play around how you like and let the music move you. And while Purple Disco Machine wasn't really following A-Trak and Todd Terry's "DJs Gotta Dance More," he was indeed in tune with the crowd, literally and figuratively playing with them. Not giving too much away I've posted a short playlist of some of the tracks I heard Friday, one of those wonderful nights where you truly get lost in the music. Enjoy below and be sure to check out PDM if/when you get the chance. Same goes for CODA who's system and setup is can't miss.

Enlightened Listening for September 14

Another Friday, another top notch day for releases. This week's Enlightened Listening includes EPs and album we already enjoyed singles from (Bob Moses, Dizzee Rascal, Aphex Twin, and Djedjotronic), remixes of tracks we love (Djemba Djemba, Gerd Janson, Babert, Sultan + Shepard, and Friction) and some of our favourites artists in (Harrison, BIJOU, Masayoshi Iimori and Sub Focus with Dimension). Once again I've attempted to curate the 46 tracks and 3+ hours of content into a flowing movement while obviously albums break that up. Individuals releases below along with short descriptions.

Bob Moses - Battle Lines
Fantastic follow up album. Not a collection of singles but a brilliant story led by Tom Howie's lyrics. Worthy multiple listens, done easily through the wonderfully woven, chill connective tissue.

Harrison - Your Girl (ft. Ralph)
Beautiful, chill funk with just enough snap to keep you coming back for more. Harrison's album is really starting to take shape.

Kiesza - Phantom Of The Dancefloor (Djemba Djemba Remix)
The Stuart Price (Jacques Lu Cont) produced single enjoys an update from previous Kiesza collaborator Djemba Djemba. Sparkling, spritely, futuristic fun this one warms my heart.

SG Lewis ft. AlunaGeorge - Hurting (Gerd Janson Remix)
Would not have guessed that "Hurting" would be this good as 118 club tweeker but here we are thanks to Gerd Janson who continues to stay hot. ICYMI check out his "Neutron Dance" mix from last month.

Purple Disco Machine - Dished (Male Stripper) [Babert Italo Disco Remix]
My favourite of the new remix package. Stay closest and is in my eyes the most well suited to the original. A wonderfully, warm bouncy ride that you never want to end.

Aevion - Wild Safari
The most feels from whatever is making that oh so safari sound, and I don't mean the elephant-esque horns, the bird cries, or the tribal chanting. Wreaks of wide open spaces and wild energy.

Fatboy Slim - Gangster Trippin (Sultan + Shepard Remix)
The duo keeps updating the past and keeps doing it well. The energy and allure of the original stays strong while this new version pops off with an extra ounce of oomph.

BIJOU - Super Phat
One of bass/G-house's finest artists on arguably bass/G-house's best label. Four equally intimidating and mean banging bass tracks with just the right amount of swing to leave the crowd in the lurches.

K+Lab - I Can't Wait (ft. Phonik Ops & Jakeda)
Westwood comes through again with stanky sax and gritty glitch hop grooves. Fire funk.

Dizzee Rascal - Don't Gas Me
Big productions in the title track and "Money Right," which is immediately one of my favourite tracks of the year, two legends atop a sick beat. Skepta has one hell of a production ear.

Masayoshi Iimori - Flow
Masayoshi is like a mad scientist, when his monstrous creations come to life they can bring worldwide destruction and this one does some serious damage.

Aphex Twin - Collapse
There is no one quite like Aphex Twin and we're reminded of that fact again. Where working with seemingly ethereal synths or their darker dirtier counterparts he always crafts something of uncommon value. Tweak out to these five tracks and feel your brain collapse in on itself.

Sub Focus & Dimension - Desire (Only on Youtube in Canada)
Every time these two legends meet up magic is made. Screams of the good old days especially when you have to watch on UKF's youtube.

Tom Grennan - Found What I've Been Looking For (Friction 'Back To 92' Mix)
Another nostalgia laced DnB track. Friction has absolutely nailed the raw energetic ethos of those days.

Djedjotronic - R.U.R
I've never encountered a techno album quite like this one. Djedjotronic is an absolute wizard, authoring some of the most enticing and electrifying releases of the year. There are no holes, only puzzles pieces of a greater whole that is all kinds of awesome.

Bump In The Hump: September 12 (Season 8, Episode 1)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Cajmere - The Percolator (Hesk Remix)

After a week between new episodes of Bump In The Hump there's no shortage of quality content in this special season premiere episode. It is jam packed with several artists we've been following closely from the beginning of this journey, as well as some new names that are more than worth monitoring. Not necessarily a new name, but one that's made a comeback is local footwork veteran Hesk. Earlier this year he released a hundred (yes, 100!) tracks from his epic catalog for free here, but that was just the start. Yesterday he upped that to 101 with his 160 BPM remix of Cajmere classic "The Percolator." Further, he's got an EP called My Jeep on the way and is celebrating its release with a free party at Edenhall Friday with support from SL.Y, Eytan Tobin, Walmer Convenience, Fil Jackson and Riggadale, RSVP here. Hit the perk below, grab it free here, and catch it in the mix tonight from 7-9 EDT.

I've already teased several tracks including Monday's post of "The Ultimate Warlord," which means you'll hear some disco. There's also a hearty helping of house, a dollop of DnB, a meal of midtempo, and a touch of trap and techno before we close things out with a look ahead to My Mixtape courtesy a clip of my conversation with ASHE. Don't miss out on all of this good good whole wheat Canadian craftwork with two all new hours of Bump In The Hump on Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump: Season 8 Intro

As you've likely heard by now, the new eighth season of Bump In The Hump premieres tomorrow on Radio Humber. I've already posted the new accompanying promos and video, made by Javon Anderson and Joseph Kan respectively (here), but if you're a keen observer you'll note one of the biggest components on the season changes is the new intro. Well here it is, comprised of music released during the seventh season with a few cheeky samples. There's bits and pieces from: Bito, Chromeo, Cloverdale, The Funk Hunters, The Gibbs, Kotek, LIINKS, OSOTYT, thook, Todd Terje and The Olsens, with individual tracks linked on the Soundcloud page here. Check it out below and enjoy!Catch the Bump In The Hump premiere tomorrow night from 7-9 PM EDT, live via Radio Humber.

Mickey Kojak - Get Out (Mickey's '07 Club Edit)

Back in June Aussie producer Mickey Kojak scored a hit with the sensational "Get Out." Friday, he flipped it on its head taking the track to 2007 and cleaving it into a club creeper. Led by a brilliant drum line, space-age bleeps and bloops, and an indie feel reminiscent of MGMT, the original is all kinds of alluring, full of earworm warmth. This new version however takes a more expansive approach, slowly building towards more typical club-style drops, all while maintaining the magic of the original. The dazzling drum design still shines strong, summoning you to the dance floor. The depth of this new drop keeps you there, as though falling into a bottomless pit. But that is the story of the first drop, where the strength of the second is its ecstasy inducing, reach-for-the-sky resplendent riser. Like its lyrical content, it eviscerates all evil, cutting out the cancer, allowing freedom to flourish. It's not often a club edit can be as poignant and powerful as the original, but this is the case here, stream/purchase here.FOLLOW MICKEY KOJAK: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

The Immortals - The Ultimate Warlord (SanFranDisko DJ Friendly Edit)

Regular readers will know of my affinity for disco edits, so the name SanFranDisko will not be a new one. This weekend he unleashed another awesome edit, removing the key change and quantizing the Canadian space disco classic from The Immortals.

I first came across "The Ultimate Warlord" in a mix from Boy 8-Bit a number of years ago and was immediately awestruck. It is a warm and wickedly epic organ-led dance number that sits at the intersection of fantasy and sci-fi. And really, what is cooler than that? It's like a lost sequence of Heavy Metal, and perhaps this isn't much of a stretch as the magazine the film was based on shares the same timeline as "The Ultimate Warlord."

SanFranDisko's updated, DJ friendly, edit lets the magic of the original stand strong, while removing the pesky key change, and planting each beat right on cue, making it easier for mixing. That said, the life and funky groove of the original is still present. Whether through the living and breathing organ, the slew of effects and vocals, or numerous swelling risers, you can see this epic creation emerging from its vinyl grooves. As with the majority of Paul Goodyear's edits this too is available for free download, here.

Enlightened Listening for September 7

Fridays are always fantastic but this one is particularly so, thanks to six EP/albums. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening is firmly focused on those longer form releases moving from Uppermost's uplifting grooves, through Sébastien Léger's sublime soundscapes to the techno from BNR and Cardopusher to the fantastic fire of ANGELZ's third iteration of Saint Thug. I won't get too deep into descriptions as I'm again cramped for time (I'm working on the new seasons of both Bump In The Hump and My Mixtape which premiere next week), but I will hopefully sell you on the quality of each of these releases in a brief 'elevator pitch' if you will. Enjoy each below and have a great weekend!

Uppermost - Given By Nature
Warm analog designs with a human touch and sneaky underlying groove. If there was one word or feeling that I get throughout this, it is undoubtedly soaring. Favourite track: "Dreams."

Sébastien Léger - Underwater Rocket
Seems like Seb has found a fitting home with All Day I Dream, where his progressive deep house mysticism can truly thrive. How tracks can be so free floating yet earthbound through bass is beyond me. Favourite track: "Satellite."

Qrion - GAF 1
Not what I expected when I pressed play, but boy did Qrion deliver with this EP. "GAF" jumps right into the conversation for my favourite house tracks of the year. A bright, bouncy, juicy, spiraling sensation.

Brain Dancing - Far From Finished
Old school bleepy rave, electro, techno blended like only BNR can deliver. Reach for the sky raucousness with some supremely strong soundscapes that will immediately invoke club/warehouse feels. Favourite track: "Opti C Dorian."

Cardopusher - Zone 34: Face The Machine
Hard driving grooves with a strong serving of acid to eat away at your mind while your feet fly all over the floor. Cardopusher is always good but this may be my favourite release of his, and not just because of the clever titles. Favourite track: "All Fall Down."

ANGELZ - Saint Thug: Numero III
Easily one of the hottest producers in the club/bass house scene ANGELZ has done it again. These are bangers of the highest quality, not just turning the bass up to a ten but thriving through sick sound design and dope features. Favourite track: "Yeah Yeah."
