SpectraSoul ft. Terri Walker - Light In The Dark (Petko Turner Edit)

The prolific Petko Turner continues to churn out tunes at an incredible clip. After enjoying his recent takes on Crazytown "Butterfly" and Roommates "Shaman Journey" I awoke to another excellent edit, as Petko pushes into DnB with SpectraSoul's 2012 stunner "Light In The Dark." Already oozing with an incredible atmosphere, Turner taps into the ominous nature and flickering fearsomeness of the growling grit delivering a darker, more dominating beat. That said, this is an edit and therefore is no great departure from the original, but rather more of an extension than anything else. Each of the integral elements of the original remain, simply rearranged for a longer dance delivery, really letting the resplendent power breathe. Petko Turner is the helping hand Terri Walker sings about as he pieces her and the DnB bed together in this updated edit. Enlightened Listening for June 29

Friday's never disappoint. Whether you want the biggest names or the freshest faces, there's always something spectacular somewhere. Hopefully I've done a good job finding a combination of both, with the usual range of genres and styles. Again I've done my best to deliver a diverse yet cohesive run through 12 tracks, from punchy PC Music stylings, through techno, house, disco, and more bass heavy bangers. Check the playlist below, read the descriptions following, and grab those free downloads.

DUCKY - Headfirst
Undeniable energy amidst a furious and fantastical flow. Great for diving into the long weekend.

Boy Sim - Solid Gold Clit (ft. Pearl)
Felt equally in your face and all over your body. Massive mind-bender of an anthem that you might not want stuck in your head, but will work its way in there regardless.

Eekkoo - Punks
Lead and title track from his just released 4 track EP. Another sensational, progressive and powerful take on techno, that delivers a godly groove with warm wobs, and tantalizing twists.

The Aston Shuffle - Everything I Got
Heavenly house with sublime synth swells that plays perfectly with the vocals (chops and otherwise).

The Pharcyde - Runnin' (Petko Turner's Extended Edit)*
Another awesome offering from Petko Turner. Big throwback vibes that will serve us well this weekend.

Fatback Band - Whicky Whacky (Count Funkula 12 Inch Fierce Discko Regroove)*
Party, party, party! Groove, groove, groove! Dance, dance, dance! Just let go and enjoy.

Family Of The Year - Hold Me Down (Autograf Remix)
Autograf deliver delicious quality as usual. This is massive, soulful and fun. Stunning.

Sultan + Shepard - I Got 5 On It
More throwback vibes brought bouncing back to beautiful life. Snappy, poppy and fun.

Tom Bull - It's My Life
Brilliantly banging bass house mix of Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me." Simple yet strong.

POWERCYAN - Plutocracy (Ephixa Remix)
Stunning cinematics from Ephixa, which dive in a diabolic direction. Master craftsmanship.

NuKid x Lucille Croft - Got The Flow
Dirty, dirty, dirty stuff from NuKid as per usual. Not to sound old like Randy and in turn Stan on South Park, but I often envision bass sounds as farts, and this ones hella stanky (see here).

Diplo ft. DRAM - Don't Look Back (QUIX Remix)
Head spinning stomper of a remix. I can only imagine the exorcism that must've taken place to create the sounds in the drop. Absolutely wild.

May 28 Disco Delights

Scrolling through my Soundcloud I found the usual onslaught of pop/rap remixes/bootlegs and clips of dubstep tracks, but I'm finding disco edits sprinkled in more and more. So much so that I've decided to share some of today's finds paired with a couple I never got a chance to showcase previously. Check out the playlist below, grab the free downloads where available and get your week off to a strong start.

Flight Facilities ft. Broods, Reggie Watts & Saro - Stranded (Late Night Tuff Guy Remix)*
Supremely smooth delivery from the legendary down under disco deity. Truly an awe-inspiring production from every angle. Each element plays its role perfectly, seeming organic and effortless.

Lindstrom ft. Ronika - Didn't Know Better (Remix)
Beautiful, bright and bouncy number that thrives through its drums and synth work pushing the original to new heights. When Ronika and the original return the anthemic quality kicks in, reminding us that Lindstrom is a leader in all things disco house.

T-Connection - At Midnight (Soul Bombs Rework)*
It's hard to make it through a disco set without coming across either SanFranDisko's edit or any other Soul Bombs production, but this version differentiates itself with a more high tempo, jacking groove. It is a filter fun fest that exploits the awesome bassline, punchy percussion and sweet strings.

Sister Sledge - We Are Family (Barry Harris 2018 House Remix)*
Yet another classic track retouched by Barry Harris. While it's called house, the heart remains defiantly disco. Great groove led by a funky fat bassline, warm chords, and pleasurable piano.

Peter Gabriel - Steam (Petko Turner Funky Edit)*
The prolific Petko continues to impress with each subsequent edit. Although the original is already funky, this version is even more so. It adds extra oomph focusing on drums while sneaking the horns in underneath the wall of thundering percussion. Turner's treatment of the vocals deserves an extra nod.

Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover (Mean Fiddler 12 Inched Regroove)*
Maybe it's just me but little can compare to disco edits of 80s classics. Like LNTG's edit above this too is satiny smooth. The cool and captivating core of the original remains relatively intact while extended for extra enjoyment and dance-floor filling fun.

Enlightened Listening for April 27

Another Friday another epic list of releases. This week I've decided to focus almost exclusively  on singles (remixes included) from my favourite names. However I've returned to Soundcloud this week to accommodate the newly launched mix series from Falcons. Catch up on this week's Enlightened Listening with the playlist below, and descriptions with asterisk indicating free download at the bottom.

Hunter Siegel - Fading (ft. Melanie?)
Just in time for his latest No Neon date, Hunter returns with his first original in forever. It's clear however that he's not lost a step with walloping wubs and killer chops. If you'll pardon the pun, the future looks dark and stormy for the dark plur himself.

Brya - Neon Lovin'
Disco funk theme engage. This is one of the two artists I wasn't familiar with prior to today, but it didn't take long for me to realize this was a hot groove and the kind of future (insert genre) I enjoy.

NOTD ft. Bea Miller - I Wanna Know (Pusher Remix)
Like Hunter it's been forever since we've had new Pusher, and like Brya it's immensely pleasing to have neon nobility back in the game. Be sure to check out his new video series "Music Minutes."

Silicon Scally - Rift
Drawn in by the Central Processing Unit label, I'm happy to have come across Scally and this EP, from which "Rift" is my favourite. It is a brilliant blend of old school electro and techno, that shows off the underlying life of overtly electronic productions. Genius.

Pete Shelley - Witness The Change (SanFranDisko Remix)*
Despite spending less than eight months in the 80s it will forever feel like home for me. The more I get exposed to it, especially through trusted sources like SanFranDisko, the more I love it. Fancy a groovy cruising track? Well look no further.

Bensley - Do It Again (ft. Armanni Reign)
When drum and bass is done right there isn't much better, especially when it has strong vocals. You can trust Bensley to bring that killer quality, as this one goes off with undeniable energy and ease.

MDK - X Buster*
The wubstep warrior and chiptune champion is back with this piece of playful power and fun funk.

Alexander Robotnick - Problèmes d'Amour (Petko Turner's 808 BD Edit)*
The Petko polish shines strong on this one. While sonically it's entirely unrelated to Silicon Scally, they both sound like machines coming to life and breaking out on the dancefloor.

Sam Smith - Pray (MK Remix)
After the success of his remix of "Money On My Mind" it should be no surprise that this follow up is just as good. Truthfully everything MK touches turns to gold, but there's just something about the way he chops Sam Smith's voice; add that to the choir and you've got some sublime, heavenly house.

Poolside - Feel Alright (Yuksek Remix)
The disco grooves just don't stop. Yuksek blesses the piano, guitar and drums, making a musical bed that you cannot sleep on but must simply bounce on all day and night.

Amtrac ft. Anabel Englund - Old Times (Skream Remix)
Talk about a trio of all stars. This jumped off the screen and into my soul, but even better blasted out the speakers. However I've fallen face down and cannot get up after those pans punched through the wubs. Skream has been making top notch tracks for years, but it feels like this last year or so he's settled into his golden age of supremely satisfying and epic electronic tracks.

Falcons - Fluidity Mixtape Vol. 1*
For years Falcons has been at the intersection of rap and electronic, especially with his bootleg remixes (see his Loosies release), but it looks like now he's really ready to showcase that skill with this Fluidity mix series, from which each individual edit/bootleg/mashup will be released a month later. Peep the tracklist here and whet your appetite, or just take my word and enjoy the awesomeness.

Twelve Mixes To Get You Through The Week

Going back through the year I've already shared several masterful mixes, from the likes of Tiga, Point Point, and Alan Fitzpatrick (as well as five new episodes of My Mixtape). While I normally write more lengthy descriptions and sales pitches as to why you ought to listen, I've found that today I've become overwhelmed with wonderful musical journeys. So with that in mind I've compiled a dozen of my favourites of 2018 so far, and will share with very brief descriptions. There's everything from jungle DnB, experimental bass and trap, dubstep, disco, house, and chill. Since not all of these mixes are on Soundcloud there will be no proper playlist, instead I'll use individual embeds. Enjoy below!

HAIM - Walking Away (Petko Turner's Mura Massa Edit)

Petko Turner is a name I've come across a number of times in the last few months as I continue to dive further into the world of disco/funk edits and remixes, and today I fell headfirst into that ocean. The original impetus came from his most recent release, a take on "Fortihouse," which lead me to his prolific Soundcloud profile. Home to 277 tracks, the selection is epic with remixes and edits of artists and names I've never heard, alongside the likes of Phil Collins, Depeche Mode, Prince, and more. However, one track in particular caught my attention, the subject of this post, HAIM and "Walking Away."

Here Petko's taken his talents to the Mura Masa remix of said track, giving it a bigger bass backing and kicking the tempo up a notch. While the airy dreaminess of Mura Masa's version is all but boiled off, the bleepy brilliance seems stronger and more magical than before, especially in contrast with the bursting-at-the-seams bassline. The allure of HAIM's original and their vocals still remain, but the lyrics are cut back, which reminds me of the first time I heard HAIM, in Duke Dumont's remix of "Falling," This is further proof that whoever is supplying the vocals for HAIM (Este, Danielle or Alana), they are ripe for remixing. I certainly hope we're in for more masterful takes on their tracks, and highly suggest a scroll through Petko Tuner's bountiful back catalog. Download "Walking Away" free via Hyppedit here.
