Moullinex - The Huggers (Club Edit)

Lisbon, Portugal's Luis Clara Gomes, better known to us as indie dance/house producer Moullinex just released a club edit of jazzy scat joint "The Huggers." Originally part of the superb Hypersex album, "The Huggers" hits like a fantastically funky, uber cool mix of Andy Bernard's a capella group Here Comes Treble, The Chordettes' "Mr. Sandman" and Metroplane's "Bahp." Like the mini album art that accompanies Hypersex, there's a whole lot going on as countless bodies flail every which way. For this reason it was not the most DJ friendly track. However its undeniable allure led to countless requests for a club-centric edit to which Moullinex obliged. Extending the awesomeness to over seven minutes, the flurry of um-bops, das, dos, and dows now have a more consistent bed to bounce on. That said the backing beat is nothing to scoff at, but rather a power funk factory that would be a banger even without the awesome vocal offerings. Babert & Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue - Good Lyfe (Severino Remix)

Friday night I finally got the chance to see Horse Meat Disco in person (at least half of the quartet as it were). Love and freedom ruled CODA as Severino Panzetta and Luke Howard hit the decks for an extended set full of fabulous edits and originals alike. all oozing with funk, biting brass, sensational strings and piquant piano. True to the talk around Horse Meat Disco and their long running party at The Eagle, the atmosphere was incredible and the dance floor was packed the whole night.

While I'm still relatively green when it comes to the greater disco catalog (certainly in comparison to Severino and/or Luke), there were numerous tracks that I knew right off the bat and was able to enjoy in utter ecstasy (see Dimitri From Paris's edit of "Salsoul Rainbow" or Joey Negro's dub of "Found A Cure"). On the other side of things, Horse Meat Disco don't have many of their own productions, however Severino did just release a solo remix effort, taking on Babert & Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue.

Out now on Midnight Riot Records, this "Good Lyfe" remix is a brilliant blend of the bottomless bounce and groove of deep house with the distinct flair of disco. The chords craft a cool, luxurious italo-disco dance floor primed for your feet to follow the playful percussion all as the vocals spin around your head. It is a hearty and powerful production, that while featuring extended dance sequences never seems to drag, but rather further welcome you to the floor for more fun. Get Severino's "Good Lyfe" here.

GFOTY - CREEP (UR A)

Electrifying London-based artist, Girl Friend Of The Year (GFOTY) just released a take on classic Radiohead track "Creep." Giving the 1992 grunge track a new, energetic tilt with a DnB production from Johnny, this potent turn does however lead with the minimal bed that makes the original so captivating.

Further twisting Radiohead's debut single, GFOTY's vocals mark a change in character from Thom Yorke's tortured delivery, a shift that can be seen as either incongruent or perhaps even more fitting. It is the former in the sense that lyrically "Creep" is a very human and even happy song, as guitarist/pianist Jonny Greenwood said it is about "recognizing who you are." However, I'll argue the latter here as GFOTY's computer-aided vocal delivery injects the pure unease and utter creepiness that is so inherent in the original. She is indeed more human than HAL 9000, but I cannot help but feel those same shivers as GFOTY gives her all, especially evident as she nearly evaporates around 2:05.

All in all, this is a smartly crafted and truly enjoyable cover, which I believe perfectly encompasses the ethos of the original. GFOTY has heard from the commenters and made "CREEP" downloadable, here.FOLLOW GFOTY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: $kullkid - Hanakotoba 花言葉

Even after nearly four years of focusing on the latest and greatest our Canadian producers have to offer, somehow I still manage to stumble across artists I'd never heard before. This happened once again last week as Soundcloud's "Related Tracks" algorithm sent me to $kullkid's "Hanakotoba 花言葉." Often times said algorithm has me immediately pressing pause or skipping tracks, but this time $kullkid's killer melodic creation had me hooked. It was like hearing early Skrillex for the first time; I was wowed by both the mysterious mixture of strings and vocals, as well as the trippy dub bass chops. I knew I had to have this track, but even better once I clicked through to $kullkid's profile page, I learned that he was from Montreal and therefore would be a fit on Bump In The Hump. Check it below!
Joining "Hanakotoba 花言葉" on tonight's episode, is a mean mix of acid, bass, and tech house tunes, alongside a more placid, yet playful section of synth pop. Of course there's also a feast of fire with club cuts, manic midtempo, dirty dubstep, turnt trap and even some sick psy-trance! Don't miss the madness live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, but if you do, find the recording on Mixcloud here.

The Magician - Magic Tape 89

While it's not exactly the start of a new week, The Magician has blessed us with an hour of new tunes in the 89th edition of his Magic Tape series, perfect for pushing through the doldrums that is another ride around the calendar rows. Heavy on the unreleased content, even more so than usual, this mix features, at least what we believe to be, the likes of forthcoming A-Trak and The Aston Shuffle as well as recently released Mike Mago, Disclosure and The Black Madonna. While the heart of this tape is house, The Magician makes sure to offer up twists of acid, disco, funk, RnB, piano and more. It's not heavy on mixing but rather more focused on letting the beauty of each piece breathe, and boy does it feel good to let this uplifting oxygen into our lungs. While I've nearly made it through the whole tape for a second time, and a full listen is a must, I think I've pinpointed my favourite section, that being the trio of IDs between Disclosure's "Talk" VIP and A-Trak's "Work It Out," which drops Thursday on Fool's Gold. Stream the whole mix below and find at least a partial tracklist via 1001tracklists here.FOLLOW THE MAGICIAN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for April 19

Is there such thing as a not good Friday? As long as there's new music to enjoy, I don't think so. This week's Enlightened Listening includes the completion of a number of projects we've previewed here before including Peggy Gou, Myd, and Dean Grenier & Pilo's collaborative Take Form EP, plus a slew of my favourite names dropping dope records which I'll guide you through below.

Things get started with Four Tet who just graced the Mojave stage at Coachella this past weekend. "Teenage Birdsong" is a smooth, catchy little number that plays through an immense amount of instrumentation, especially considering its tight three and a half minute run-time. Next up, Prospa deliver a dope dance groove which just capture Annie Mac's Hottest Record In The World today. Peggy Gou then follows up the single "Starry Night" with sublime sensation "Han Pan," more in line with "It Makes You Forget." I have a strong feeling this one will be not just one of my songs of the summer, but of the entire year. Club Cheval's Myd then makes good on the rest of his Superdiscoteca EP with two more top notch tracks, my favourite being the cascading brilliance of "The Bouncer."

Next up Purple Disco Machine comes through with an absolutely massive compilation in collaboration with Glitterbox which brings together Purple Disco Machine originals, remixes and a number of awesome offerings from the likes of Hatiras, Mighty Mouse, Bob Sinclar and more. Staying with various legends, the next release is a match made in heaven: The Black Madonna remixing Robyn's "Between The Lines." Again with The Black Madonna, she, Horse Meat Disco and Maya Jane Coles have all been supporting ABSOLUTE.'s brilliant remix of Steve Lawler "Narna." Finally we wrap up this week's selection with two top notch techno EPs starting with the aforementioned Take Form from Dean Grenier and Pilo, before being swept off our feet by Kevin de Vries' Vertigo. If you need a single track to sell each EP look no further than the title tracks of each. Stream below and enjoy your weekend!

Four Tet - Teenage Birdsong

Prospa - Intended

Peggy Gou - Moment EP

Myd - Superdiscoteca

Various Artists - Purple Disco Machine & Glitterbox Present: Discotheque

Robyn - Between The Lines (The Black Madonna Remix)

Steve Lawler - Narna (I Am Happy) [ABSOLUTE. Remix]

Dean Grenier & Pilo - Take Form

Bump In The Hump: April 17 (Season 8, Episode 30)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Just John x Dom Dias - Tango Town (ft. DillanPonders)

The dynamic duo that is Just John and Dom Dias continue to make massive waves. Just as they did for Game 1, the two talents hit the stage in the so-called 'Jurassic Park' ahead of Raptors/Magic Game 2 last night. This comes after their salacious success "Soundboi" was chosen as the Raptors' official playoff anthem and can be seen on their Twitter here. Check out both John and Dom's socials (linked at the bottom of the page) for highlights of the event.

Enormous endorsements aside, the duo remain hungry as they continue to cook up new heat, some of which they be performing and celebrating Friday night at the Drake Underground. Named the hottest concert in Toronto in April by NOW Magazine, it's no wonder the Don III Release Party has since sold out. However you can get a taste of the festivities both now and tonight on Bump In The Hump as I'm happy to feature "Tango Town" with fellow performer DillanPonders who joins Jayemkayem and Ty Senoj along with the guests of honor Friday. Stream now below and find event details here. After a delayed and minimal episode last week due to illness, I'm still feeling the effects of this terrible flu but will do my best to keep up with the flurry of new tunes and not to cough on air (no promises). That said there's a ton of new tracks to get your motor running. There's more than an hour of house, disco and techno, an absolutely genius cut from Robotaki's Anachronism, and some brilliant bass in the form of trap, dubstep and more in the Fire Finale. Listen live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or catch the episode in its entirety as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Jungle - Lucky I Got What I Want (Avoure Remix)

Ukrainian producer Avoure got his week started right by taking us back to 2014 with his remix of London-based musical collective Jungle and their funky soul track "Lucky I Got What I Want." Like his jump-started arrival on the scene, a collab with Lane 8 entitled "Let Me," this remix also gets whipped up in a hurry. Delivering an upbeat, indie pop, deep house mixture, Avoure has imbued this track with a delightful dance energy. The drums drive the track forward while both the strings and synths dazzle. However, those awesome elements aside, I feel like the catchiness of the cool vocals and Avoure's intelligently crafted, almost crackling, atmosphere are what make "Lucky I Got What I Want" such a stunning success. It strikes me as a mix between Tiga's remix of Friendly Fires "Blue Cassette" (not just because of the accompanying artwork) and some of Alex Metric's more recent work with Anjunadeep (albeit with more frenzied movement). As a cherry on top, Avoure has offered up the extended remix for free via Google Drive. Get it here and follow the Ukrainian upstart's social media accounts below.FOLLOW AVOURE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Another Sky - The Cracks

As often seems to be the case as the weather gets warmer, my attention slowly turns from pure electronic productions to more typical bands. Most recently that band has been Parcels, but another group have just appeared on my radar courtesy Annie Mac, who just gave the first play to South London outfit Another Sky and their new single "The Cracks."

It took no time at all for me to fall for this building brilliance and beauty, but was I just lapping up all Annie had to offer, or are Another Sky indeed a band for me? Until this first play I had never heard of this foursome, but a quick Google search gave me reason to jump aboard their bandwagon as the first article (Dork) that appeared had quoted vocalist Catrin as saying "The band formed out of a mutual obsession with a Talk Talk album." Also obsessed with Talk Talk myself, it's easy to hear Mark Hollis' imprint in their albeit minimal catalog. However, unless you're Greta Van Fleet you likely receive inspiration from more than one source, as is the case here with "The Cracks."

A reference to Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" from 1992 album The Future, the vocal content does indeed burst forth as light beaming over the horizon, around your curtain and into your eyes. It is this energizing and uplifting, yet sometimes chaotic, power that we're witnessing as spring pushes against winter's cold, crushing grip. The melange of instruments and verily so Catrin's vociferous vocals work in fantastic harmony, combining to build a massive structure of striking euphoria. It is hard not to be compelled to spin in ecstasy by the shuffling drums and plucking strings as though under the spell of Another Sky. And while I would say autonomy is incredibly important, giving into "The Cracks" can be incredibly edifying. Stream now and be sure to follow the rise of Another Sky with social links below.FOLLOW ANOTHER SKY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for April 12

Fridays and the new music that comes with it are life giving and this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is no different. We start more downtempo with a couple cool cuts from Gramatik and Tame Impala, before getting glitzy with Mark Ronson. Next up is Robotaki who delivers an ingenious EP in Anachronism from which we've already heard singles "Meant To Be" and "All I Can Do." Staying with geniuses, how about the highly anticipated No Geography from the legendary Chemical Brothers? While we knew that would be good, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the foursome of remixes of Dua Lipa's "Swan Song" from Alita: Battle Angel. Top choice cuts from Calibre and DJ Shadow with NastyNasty. The energy continues to rise as Riddim Commission comes through with a crisp, killer single in "Look So Cute." Next up is the always exceptional Night Bass who tap Kendoll for a fulsome five track EP in Playhouse. Rounding out the playlist is Benzi's "Whatcha Gonna Do" which is almost like a TWRK/Girl Trapz/Get Right Radio mix in a tight three minute delivery. Enjoy!

Gramatik - East River Soul (ft. Adam Stehr)

Tame Impala - Borderline

Mark Ronson - Late Night Feelings (ft. Lykke Li)

Robotaki - Anachronism

SpectraSoul ft. Terri Walker - Light In The Dark (Petko Turner Edit)

The prolific Petko Turner continues to churn out tunes at an incredible clip. After enjoying his recent takes on Crazytown "Butterfly" and Roommates "Shaman Journey" I awoke to another excellent edit, as Petko pushes into DnB with SpectraSoul's 2012 stunner "Light In The Dark." Already oozing with an incredible atmosphere, Turner taps into the ominous nature and flickering fearsomeness of the growling grit delivering a darker, more dominating beat. That said, this is an edit and therefore is no great departure from the original, but rather more of an extension than anything else. Each of the integral elements of the original remain, simply rearranged for a longer dance delivery, really letting the resplendent power breathe. Petko Turner is the helping hand Terri Walker sings about as he pieces her and the DnB bed together in this updated edit. Dean Grenier & Pilo - Portra 400

This past Friday the Turbo Recordings Soundcloud account posted two tracks from Dean Genier and Pilo's upcoming collaborative EP Take Form. Offering up the 2nd and 4th tracks of the fivesome due out April 19th on the Twin Turbo imprint, it was the latter "Portra 400" that most caught my ear. As though following the life cycle of a freshly planted flower, the track grows slowly stronger, bigger and more beautiful. The time lapse shows it wavering, almost shivering in the wind, bending this way and that as the anything but organic sounds breath life into the most earthly of lifeforms. As mesmerizing and entrancing this growth is, it's not until the flower petals burst forth from the bud (shortly after the 3 minute mark) that we become fully aware of the power and beauty of "Portra 400." That said, there is no big wow moment or singular sensational section, but rather the entire five minute production is a gently growing, life-giving, bed of tactile techno. Enlightened Listening for April 5

It's time to become one with the weekend by enjoying the latest offerings from the wonderful world of electronic music. This week's Enlightened Listening features a strong serving of smooth flowing, electronic ease, a dash of funky fun and a big banging remix EP to close things out. Maxd opens with some cool lofi creativity which bleeds beautifully into bitbird's 3rd Gouldian Finch compilation which houses some supremely slick creations from Knapsack, Rome in Silver, Duskus and more. Next up galen tipton taps into the energetic chiptune side bitbird used to command. The genius of GRiZ comes through with another next level album featuring the likes of Snoop Dogg, Bootsy Collins & Wiz Khalifa, among others. And speaking of next level albums, Jai Wolf would seem to have found his groove as The Cure To Loneliness is not just exceptionally crafted, but incredibly heartfelt and heartening; truly beautiful. And it doesn't get much more beautiful than Goldroom's "Yellow Flowers" which with each and every play has led my jaw to drop to the floor. Staying on the floor but with the feet this time, Myd manages to concoct one of the most intoxicating offerings of the year. Rounding out the singles, Soulwax's remix of "Work It" sparks up some stunningly twisted techno, sure to have your head spinning. Finally BIJOU has brought together one of the better remix packages of the year tapping ANGELZ, YOOKiE, Gerry Gonza and others to take on the malicious "Memories." Enjoy below!

Hot Chip - Hungry Child

Legendary London outfit Hot Chip have returned with big news. After making waves in recent weeks with a number of shows including an hour long set for BBC's 6 Music Festival (here), they've just announced their first album since 2015's Why Make Sense?. Due out June 21st on Domino Record Co, A Bath Full Of Ecstasy will be the band's seventh studio album. Along with the accompanying tour announcement (see here), Hot Chip have come through with not just a brilliant music video featuring Martin Starr and Milana Vayntrub, but also a couple cuts of sensational lead single "Hungry Child."
It's easy to call this a triumphant return, not just because it's awesome to have Hot Chip back, once again blessing our ears with new music, but because there's quite simply an underlying ecstasy or exultance built into "Hungry Child." The character and quality of their always immaculate craftwork is on full display in both versions. The six minute original is downright divine, slowly yet surely satisfying every bone in your body over the course of the cool, crisp climb. The shorter edit features a rearrangement of the elements into a tighter, more fun focused delivery. Despite the time constraints of this version, Hot Chip's brilliance comes through as they give each element its moment, breathing beautiful into each other. There's no doubt in my mind that "Hungry Child" will be pulling listeners back in for countless repeats as the year goes on and we work towards the release of A Bath Full Of Ecstasy. And best believe I'll be in attendance as they take to The Phoenix Concert Theatre Sept. 12th.FOLLOW HOT CHIP: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Silk City ft. Dua Lipa - Electricity (Leemz Bootleg)

Undeniably one of the most intoxicating pop productions of the last year, Silk City's Dua Lipa led Grammy winning single "Electricity" has received countless remixes including one from The Black Madonna, who hit the 34th spot in my year end countdown (here). Months after the original spark has subsided Jersey Club legend Leemz has brought his bounce and inimitable energy to the effusive "Electricity." The propulsive pressure of Leemz's lightning-in-a-bottle bootleg is immediately invigorating, sucking you in through the success of Silk City and Dua Lipa's lush delivery before becoming jacked up on a gallon of java. The drops are dizzying, almost disorienting, in their whirlwind of wild Jersey Club components, perfect for pushing any party into overdrive. It is this contrast of the sublime nature of the original and its smooth status in between drops that makes this such a rousing remix. Mr. Oizo - Rythme Plat (Masayoshi Iimori Remix)

As Japanese genius and rave wizard Masayoshi Iimori was on his come up in the mid 2010s, he released a bootleg remix of Mr. Oizo's "Positif" from groundbreaking Lambs Anger LP. Already as avant-garde and jaw dropping as anything around, Iimori somehow managed to further push "Positif" into the future, bringing in even more head-spinning, stomach-churning sounds and mind-melting motion. And it wasn't as if it was unhinged wildness for the sake of showing off, but rather a powerful, progressive take on an already advanced production, so much so that Mr. Oizo often played it in his sets. Perhaps it was this remix that lead Oizo to tap Iimori for an official mix of his latest, "Rythme Plat."
Released as a free download via Mr. Oizo's uber cool website, Masayoshi Iimori's take on "Rythme Plat" is that of a crazed killer from a future full of destruction and devoid of emotion. Cold and cut-throat, it is as dark and dirty as they come, sending shivers down your spine as sirens alert you of the oncoming aerial assault of a drop. Bomb after bomb lands sending countless shock-waves and nuclear fallout in every direction, permeating the entire production. The future is here, and you might as well stop worrying and love the bomb. Also be sure to follow the sonic soothsayers below.
