Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Ting - Exoskeleto EP

After last week's all house extravaganza, we all but ditch the genre in favour of a dark, dystopic, banger-laden odyssey. Tonight's all new episode of Bump In The Hump drives through DnB, dubstep, trap, techno and even encounters a couple soundtrack type pieces. One of several sensational showstoppers comes from Ting's new Exoskeleto EP. Slinging some sick and twisted synths, the three-part Sleeveless Records release is a perfect fit in tonight's episode with its unabashed banging quality and cinematic tilt. Stream Exoskeleto below, get it free here, and tune into Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber to catch a cut in the mix, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud.

45 Roller - Rain

2020 has been a landmark year for the legend that is Shy FX. He tapped a ton of talent to remix his Raggamuffin SoundTape and, more recently, returned to his 45 Roller alias for tremendous two tracker Rain / Outrun.

The lead cut from the cult.ure release makes masterful use of a sample from oft covered Ann Peebles' 1973 soul number "I Can't Stand The Rain." Immediately setting the scene, Andre Williams opens both the track and the skies by sampling literal rain (which mustn't be hard in London). Just the first bit of genius in "Rain," the sounds of the storm blend brilliantly into the carefully crafted percussion, giving the whole track a fabulous organic feel, much like that of a vinyl crackle. But back to the Peebles sample that drives this resplendent 45 Roller joint.

The soul of "I Can't Stand The Rain" remains as powerful as ever, perhaps even more so with the jacked up energy of the DnB delivery. The beauty of the brass hits are as energizing and uplifting as ever, providing a killer counterpoint to the thunderous sub-bass. But the real win of "Rain" comes from the electric timbales which were used in the original to mimic the sound of raindrops, and here Shy FX blends them seamlessly throughout this refurbished roller.

Lana Del Rey - Young & Beautiful (Hizen Edit)

Keeping the weekend's warmth running into the new week, East Lansing's Hizen delivers a dazzling take on Lana Del Rey classic "Young & Beautiful." Once again recasting a pop sensation in his neon poolside style, Hizen shows that Lana's retro feel can work within the aesthetics of the 80s. As though ripped from a John Hughes film, the new bright and bubbly synth bed somehow works wonders against LDR's haunting, melancholic delivery. Just as her vocals begin to reveal their dark nature, the synths pick up steam and overcome any somber shadow the lyrics may cast. In fact, this new bed ensures "Young & Beautiful" remains young and beautiful. There's no more fear of decay or the fleeting nature of life itself, but rather it's become an in-the-moment inspiration to smile and celebrate the small things. One of several enchanting Hizen edits, you can enjoy "Young & Beautiful" below and find more here.

Enlightened Listening for August 21

Yet another week has come and gone and what a legend-laced edition of Enlightened Listening it left for us. Kölsch, Four Tet, Cerrone, Frankie Knuckles, Boys Noize, Skream, Keys N Krates, Netsky and DJ Zinc all released new tracks. Yes, you read that right; basically everything in this week's wrap up is from a legend. And even those whose names don't quite carry the same weight have delivered laudable productions. While I obviously recommend each release included in the playlist below, I'd be remiss if I didn't specifically shout out the awesome ATTLAS remix package, which gives four equally inspired takes on "Half Light." Dig into this week's Enlightened Listening below and have a great weekend!

Anderholm - Delirious

Kölsch - While Waiting For Something To Care About / Now Here No Where

Tame Impala - Is It True (Four Tet Remix)

ATTLAS ft. Alisa Xayalith - Half Light (Remixes)

Jack Beats - Vinyl DnB Set

Yesterday we were blessed with a rare treat as Jack Beats laid down an all vinyl DnB set on live on Drum&BassArena's YouTube. The hour long mix can be found below and is jam-packed with classics. And what a time to dust off the old gold from arguably the hottest genre of the moment!

Once a member of the Mixologists, Geffin's DJ skills keep the set cruising at a high rate, powering through record after record. The standard is set high early on with the massive Marcus Intalex & ST Files remix of "Midnight" ahead of the instant jolt of energy that is M.I.S.T. and High Contrast's stunner "3am." With a second from High Contrast after the first of two from Calibre, we get another all time classic in the J Majik and Hatiras connection "Spaced Invader." Shortly thereafter Jack Beats fans will recognize John B's brilliance in "Up All Night," a track the then duo sampled in 2011. Sick sampling continues as the next track sees Ed Rush and Optical's powerful "Pacman." Before long we reach the end of the set as Geffin lays down back to back stunners in Adam F's "Metropolis" and Photek's "Rings Around Saturn." Enjoy the whole set below and find full tracklist posted in the comments here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Borzoo - Auranik

While I consider house, and its various subgenres, the heartbeat of electronic music, I don't think I've ever devoted an entire episode of Bump In The Hump to it. That changes tonight with two all new hours in the 120-129 BPM range. Of course not everything in the episode is technically house but rather a derivative or relative; regardless, the episode cruises along about as seamlessly as possible. Opening the epic journey, Toronto's Borzoo breaks the ice with awesome deep affair "Auranik." Its massive bottom end, propulsive percussion and evolving lead line make it the perfect track to start the night off. It eases you in by softly tickling your senses and gets your heart pumping with its lower level tempo. Get "Auranik" via Crossfade Sounds here and catch it leading tonight's all new episode of Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber or, as cataloged after the fact, on Mixcloud here.

TSHA - Sister

London talent TSHA's circle continues to grow. Her bandwagon keeps filling with early support from Pete Tong and plenty of online/print publications. Her reach still stretches further with remixes for Lianne La Havas and Foals. And, over the course of lockdown, she gained a sister. Just as the two "got on straight away," TSHA seems to have struck instant inspiration from the feeling of family expansion.

"Sister," the lead track from forthcoming Flowers EP, showcases the stunning beauty and warmth of life that TSHA has quickly cultivated as her trademark. Digging into her expansive bag of tricks, the London based producer delivers a constantly evolving work with the piano, percussion, guitar, synths and even acid all leading the track in different directions. While the mixture of these elements could be chaotic, and at times borders on it, TSHA successfully swirls them together in sublime synchronicity. At the centre of this captivating moving picture, the vocals of "Sister" almost emanate from the growth and interaction of the elements, reaching their peak after each fulsome mix. An engrossing journey and uplifting, energizing experience, "Sister" can be yours now with pre-order of Flowers via Bandcamp.

Pierce Fulton - I Can't Remember If It Was A Dream

This past Friday marked the release of Pierce Fulton's second full-length album Keeping The Little Things. A cohesive and brilliant blend of melodic, deep and progressive house, the 12 part record is no mere collection of tracks, but rather a guided meditation as you travel down quiet country roads taking in the soft glow of the sunset.

Largely driven by delicate piano and pliant, propulsive percussion, Keeping The Little Things has its fair share of both standalone successes and bridging album cuts that keep the story moving. My favourite of said standalone successes comes early on as the second track "I Can't Remember If It Was A Dream" lays down the foundation from which the rest of Keeping The Little Things arises.

Awesome, engrossing atmospherics grow out of the bubbling, almost primordial piano opening as the evolution and expansion of both the track and album itself occur right before your eyes. Before you know it "I Can't Remember If It Was A Dream" has swept you off your seat and onto your feet as Fulton skillfully sprinkles in additional elements. And it is this sneakiness, in the lack of a drop or other more obvious hooks, that makes this track such a fabulous production. Fulton keeps feeding the four minute affair and it keeps growing, both in magnitude and closer to your heart until it gets stuck in your head. But I bet you can't you can't quite remember it once it's over.

Was it a dream? Better play it again to find out...

Enlightened Listening for August 14

The weeks continue to fly by and the mountains of new music continue to grow. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening features a pair of triumphant returns, several sensational singles, numerous killer collabs, another inspired slice from Hudson Mohawke and Sable Valley's massive debut compilation.

Kiesza's Crave marks the diva's first album since her traumatic 2017 car accident, and it's clear that she's come back stronger than ever. After going without an original in 2019, Marie Davidson is back to her old tricks with the sensational "Renegade Breakdown." Following the brilliant Brassica Crystal Sea EP last month, Feel My Bicep's followup Field Day delivers the kind of quality we've come to expect from the London label. More trustworthy labels follow as Ben Böhmer delivers another exceptional cut to Anjunadeep, and Lane 8 joins Yotto and his label Odd One Out.

Once again teaming up with Voicians, No Mana's "The Same Way" delivers electro ecstasy. Two dope, deep collabs follow that with "Love You Feel" and "Love Die" as the playlist heads into house. Upping the summer feels, Ibranovski's "Surfboard" and Goddexx's "Ask Me What I Need" are sure to make you move, while remixes from Plastic Plates and Youngr follow up with fabulous funky versions of "So Afraid" and "Discopolis 2.0," respectively.

Despite clamouring for more of Tiga and Hudson Mohawke's hardcore romance, the latter delivers the next best thing in his remix of twst, a track we first heard in their mix for Annie Mac. Another highly awaited release follows that as we get the final three quarters of Murlo's Primed For Primal. We're in full screw-face territory now as QUIX and Juelz link up for calamitous collab "Chicane." Finally it's fire on fire on fire with Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1 which is jam packed with weapons from RL Grime, Cozway, Holly, Jon Casey and more. Enjoy it all via playlist below and find individual releases at the bottom.

Marie Davidson & L'Œil Nu - Renegade Breakdown

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Beatmool - Falling EP

While 2020 is largely a disastrous nightmare, the music we've been blessed with is almost enough to counter that fact. My favourite trend in that regard is the resurgence of DnB in North America which has allowed me to inject its energy into each and every show. This week we've got DeVice label boss René LaVice, another epic from Polaris, an introspective offering from AkaHendy and a cut from Beatmool's fantastic Falling EP. Out now on Pulse Palace, the four-tracker features its fair share of guitar and piano atop brilliant and brisk drum beds that combine to create an exceedingly cool nature-scape. Catch one of Beatmool's creations in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight and get the EP now here. Finally, catch a clip of my conversation with Hot Tub, this week's guest on My Mixtape, at the end of tonight's episode, live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (RedKen Remix)

Soundcloud's The Upload playlist strikes again. Despite featuring more than a dozen mixes, today's personalized playlist did indeed capture my attention with a RedKen remix of a classic Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty collaboration.

The lead single from Nicks' debut solo album Bella Donna, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is actually the only track on the 1981 album that was not written by Nicks. Originally a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers song, producer Jimmy Iovine arranged for Nicks to sing on the track, and the rest is history.

Already an exceedingly cool production, Kenny Dickenson aka RedKen has doubled down on the brilliant Donald "Duck" Dunn bassline, Benmont Tench organ and Michael Campbell guitar of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." The resultant remix is ridiculously groovy and downright gorgeous. It maintains the original's dark alchemy and breathtaking duets, while shifting its ethos from a sentimental blues affair to a funky, driving dance joint. I can only imagine the soaring feeling one would experience while cruising a dark road as the extended grooves make the minutes fly by.

I'm on perhaps my dozenth listen now and somehow "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" keeps getting better. Unfortunately it is not yet available for download, but AOR DISCO promise it will be soon. Of course I will update if/when it does become available, but until then enjoy the stream below.

Alan Dixon - Acid Drop

As July came to a close, London's Alan Dixon shared a sick new EP in Piano Drop. Indeed leaning heavily on the bright bounce of the piano, the EP's lead track "Acid Drop" overflows with an intoxicating acerbic oomph. Piano house is, and always will be, one of the most potent forms of electronic music and nothing amplifies a track's potential more than a sprinkling of acid. That said "Acid Drop" is more than just two outstanding top-notes as Dixon delivers a bevy of brilliant supporting pieces in the deliriously dirty bassline, the several sick synth designs and discriminating drum delivery. All of these elements combine to keep both "Acid Drop" and its listeners cavorting ever onward, continuously enjoying the extra energy and intrigue Dixon's fabulous flourishes inspire. Stream the exceptionally powerful acid affair below and get it as part of Piano Drop via Germany's Running Back Records.
