AC Slater + Pals - Live @ Sound (Jan 30, 2020)

The crew at Night Bass are sharing sets from their recent January 30th takeover of Sound Nightclub in LA. They've posted each of the night's sets (here). Coming in at over four hours of banging house beats and running through the likes of David Steven, Petey Clicks, and BIJOU, the night is capped by a massive B2B led by AC Slater. The collaborative set features both the Night Bass boss and the aforementioned Clicks, as well as heavy hitters Jack Beats, Hotfire and Qlank. A massive who's who of floor-filling talent, the bass in this set is sure to shake its listeners to the core. Deep and ridiculously powerful, the set pulses with energy throughout. It's easy to get lost in, but that doesn't mean there aren't highlights either. IDs and nostalgic tracks knock alike. Kick it with the killer quintet now below.

Enlightened Listening for February 7

After an epic six hour edition of Enlightened Listening last week, we've got a tight hour this week. It features an easy-going poppy intro moving through deep-house and disco before closing with club cuts and bass/g-house bangers.

Just before going to bed last night I caught the first new Bearcubs in a while and immediate fell for its sublime subtlety, which reminded me of SBTRKT. "Overthinking" is followed by another return from hiatus in Jack Garratt's "Time." Moving and beautiful it is exactly the kind of song that recaptures the love and passion Garratt incited in his fans. Captivating vocals continue to rule the roost as Amtrac glides in with glorious glistening groove "Accountable."

Phaeleh then follows with a touch of two-step which borders brilliantly between easy-going and energizing. Much like "Unity," Rylan Taggart's EP on This Never Happened is as enjoyable lying in bed as it is in the club. Staying hot Mat Zo is back on Anjunabeats with percussion-led affair "The Next Chapter."

The page then turns as disco enters via my favourite track of the list in Alan Fitzpatrick's fantastic Fully Charged Mix of Patrice Rushen. More piano power comes in as Yuksek graces Glitterbox for a gorgeous take on Risk Assessment. Bridging the gap between the hard hitting house still to come and the aforementioned disco, GRiZ gets funky with a club mix of "Could U" on Night Bass.

Finally it's time for fire and VOLAC brings us there, even if slightly understated, with the bumpy ride that is "Baby Boy." Stumbling towards the end of this Enlightened Listening, Walker & Royce get sneaky with their sick remix of "Loaded." Enlightened Listening for January 31

This first month of 2020 closes on a high note with a jam-packed edition of Enlightened Listening. Spanning over 75 tracks and 6 hours, there's bunches of bangers, albums aplenty and more remixes than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately I'm pressed for time so I'll have to keep the descriptions quick, but here we go!

A couple cohesive and thoughtful albums open as ATTLAS and Spencer Brown show off their incredible aptitude for immersive and beautiful productions. Deep house turns techy as the next four releases (two singles and two EPs) reach epic, expansive poise and power. In a week in which Dawn Chorus got a JUNO nomination, Jacques Greene ups the ante with 12 incredible remixes from the likes of Lunice, Big Miz, CFCF and others. Things turn euphoric as the following four tracks (a pair of each singles and remixes) soar and shine, highlighted by the return of Duck Sauce. With the energy now at its peak courtesy the acid of Elliot Adamson, Machinedrum and Holly's EP pairs perfectly with ingenious and propulsive albums from Squarepusher and Text Chunk & Hood Joplin. Finally as a cherry on top of this musical melange, we get 10 new tracks from Night Bass which are sure to have dance-floors shaking well into the year. Enlightened Listening for November 15

This week's eclectic edition of Enlightened Listening ranges from disco and jazz to bass house and techno. It features the legendary Pat Metheny, who while not really an obvious fit on this blog is perhaps the epitome of what I mean by Enlightened Listening - someone you may have never heard, but who in turn opens your eyes and ears to something new and undeniably interesting. Of course there's a handful of the more typical fare from some of my favourites in Eli Escobar, Joris Voorn, the Night Bass crew and HUNTER (Siegel).

Eli Escobar opens the playlist with new album Last Summer, which leads into equally excellent endeavor Four from Joris Voorn. They're followed by the first of two new duos in this playlist: C.Y.M. who is Mike Greene of Fort Romeau and Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend. After that is Oliver Koletzki's epic album Fire In The Jungle, which in turn leads us to our second new duo. The incomparable Joy Orbison has joined forces with Overmono and together they've unleashed "Bromley," the a-side to forthcoming "Still Moving." Singles continue as Dirty South dazzles with Marion Amira, and MJ Cole brings a brilliant bounce to Flume and Vera Blue. The Funk Hunters then follow with a groovy get-down, before Golden Features and The Presets send us into incredible house EP Raka. Finally it's banger time as Night Bass celebrate their 100th release with a compilation of some of their most trusted names. And speaking of trusted names, Hunter Siegel has ditched his often misspelled last name and opted for a new sound in "I Don't Forget." Enlightened Listening for May 12

A couple days late, but these tracks absolutely had to be shared. This week's Enlightened Listening gets underway with The Shapeshifters and Chic vocalist Kimberly Davis and the brilliant, biting brass of Glitterbox joint "Life Is A Dancefloor." Up next Paul Woolford unleashes an exceptional piano-led take on Hot Chip's heater "Hungry Child." The unstoppable force of Kölsch then ups the intensity with his remix of "Stella." Leading us further towards techno with a touch of midtempo, mau5trap once again wows with their recent releases through Sian's Ultraviolet EP 1.0. Marking the midway point in the playlist, Dimitri Veimar dazzles with 3 new originals alongside Dean Grenier's remix of the EP's title track "Planet." Changing gears, Pham returns with a diverse and delectable mixtape in Nostalgia. And indeed it is nostalgia you get upon seeing the title of Madeaux's massive "Black Magic Woman," a production worthy of one Carlos Santana. Next up Ninajirachi gives "303" some much needed movement, progression and captivating sound design, taking it from blah to banger. Finally, Night Bass bring us seven bangers worthy of their high standard; standouts include: "Desert Moon," "Killers" and "Fresh Prince." Enlightened Listening for April 12

Fridays and the new music that comes with it are life giving and this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is no different. We start more downtempo with a couple cool cuts from Gramatik and Tame Impala, before getting glitzy with Mark Ronson. Next up is Robotaki who delivers an ingenious EP in Anachronism from which we've already heard singles "Meant To Be" and "All I Can Do." Staying with geniuses, how about the highly anticipated No Geography from the legendary Chemical Brothers? While we knew that would be good, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the foursome of remixes of Dua Lipa's "Swan Song" from Alita: Battle Angel. Top choice cuts from Calibre and DJ Shadow with NastyNasty. The energy continues to rise as Riddim Commission comes through with a crisp, killer single in "Look So Cute." Next up is the always exceptional Night Bass who tap Kendoll for a fulsome five track EP in Playhouse. Rounding out the playlist is Benzi's "Whatcha Gonna Do" which is almost like a TWRK/Girl Trapz/Get Right Radio mix in a tight three minute delivery. Enjoy!

Whether it's with unexpected gems in the return of Grandtheft or anticipated releases like that of Culprate's Others, Fridays never disappoint. AC Slater - Outsiders Remixed Pt. 2

After playing Coachella last weekend, and ahead of his set again this Saturday (2:30 local in the Sahara Tent), Night Bass boss AC Slater just unleashed his second set of remixes from his Outsiders album. As usual the lineup is stacked with the likes of Jack Beats, Taiki Nulight, Phlegmatic Dogs and Kastle. If you're in the market for brash bass house tracks look no further. Stream/download here.

Jack Beats take on "Another You" will leave you seeing double, and maybe even keeling over seasick, as their old-school waves roll through your soul. Taiki Nulight leans into Scruffizer's vocals, punches up some piano and knocks up the noxious quality of the savage synth already present in "All About Paper." Phlegmatic Dogs follow that up with a banging beat that wobs for days, delivering the most dance ready track of the EP. Kastle then caps the fire foursome with a gorgeous garage-esque recasting of "Come Back," that like the prior two tracks mixes classic and cool rave feels with the callous and capricious bass house blitz. And truly this is the genius of Night Bass, they seem to have found the perfect balance of boundary pushing bass and smooth, satisfying club sounds.

Sinden's House Line Vol. 1

Sinden has had a hot start to 2018, already offering up a remix of Benson, a collab with Hotfire on Night Bass, and now the follow up to his 9 track House Line EP. Like its forefather on Insomniac Records it features fresh house cuts from him and other illustrious artists of said sound: Dillon Nathaniel, BIJOU, and Astronomar. Also like the previous output, it's incredibly difficult to declare a single standout as each track bumps brilliantly. But let's start at the top, shall we?

First comes Sinden's collab with BIJOU which builds not just in its noxious and nefarious g-house groove, but in the EP's technical quality as a whole. It is an exemplar for any house producer, young or old, experienced or not, as how to properly execute an effective house track. Once the floor has been filled by "Technique," Astronomar comes in with a captivating chronicle that could only properly be offered up in this house format. It keeps you cutting shapes while its story compels. And now that "No Pets" has you you sufficiently sedated on the floor, in comes Dillon Nathaniel with a world class weapon. "Riot" is certainly the bulkiest beat of the three, offering up a serious stomper with a gripping groove. It is six minutes of smart, spellbinding seduction that when finally let loose could easily cause a kerfuffle on the dance-floor. Fridays explode with great new music and today is no different. So in the interest of showing off as much of that new stuff as possible, in the most compact way, I put together a playlist of the best tracks that came across my soundcloud feed. No genre barriers just good music. Many free downloads too.

Note: I didn't include any of the BADLQQK RQQKIES release because I've already covered it on Discobelle, nor did I include Grandtheft and Sam Spiegel's remix of The Weeknd, because it's not available for stream, but my pal Colin covered it over on FUXWITHIT if you want to check it out there. Jilbare x Future Magic - Fire (ft. Izzy Salinel)*
Third release from Future Magic in a week and a half. Another sensational production, playing beautifully with vocals, getting all emotional with wicked future bass synths, and those drum fills. Wow.

Gumball - Color Coded*
My kind of adventurous blend of future bass with other seemingly conflicting subgenres. Big triumphant arcs, perfectly placed effects and sublime vocal work. Super smart production.

Kehlani - Gangsta (Parker Remix)
Beautiful bed for Kehlani's vocals that's at once heartening while also ominous in its delivery. Doesn't seem to be any slowing this one down. Good strong G vibes working with the lyrics brilliantly.

AC Slater & Taiki Nulight - Super Doopah Legend
Another stellar, shot-in-the-arm kind of track from Night Bass boss AC Slater. There's no knowing what this track is doing or where its going. Twisty-turny and full of surprises.

Stooki Sound ft. Latroit & Lliam Taylor - Echos (R3LL Remix)
Gotta have me some jersey club for my weekend, and not many do it as well as R3LL. Full of feels but also bouncy as all hell. Plenty of pump up in this one.

Alison Wonderland & Lido - Messiah (Havok Roth & Kayoh Remix)*
First I need to say that Lido's mix is another instant classic, and early choice for remix of the year. That being said this remix is stupid good. Like five minutes of soaring fire. GOLD!

JayKode - Roll Out
Even though you can feel the bass coming right from the get go, there's no being prepared for the waves of tweaking electro that lies ahead. Add a little ivory tickling & you've got one bad-ass banger.

LigOne x Holly - Lazy Social*
Somehow this one snuck into the my feed despite being 4 months old. But it's LigOne and Holly so it's damn good. Oozes with originality as expected. A little laidback, but groovy as all hell.

Dex - Images (edit)*
Ridiculously wicked and wild Tchami-like sound design. Haven't heard house done like this in a while, and its got everything I want. Groove, piano, vocals and a menacing bassline. Love it.

Juke Ellington - Sexual Healing*
Vocals, drums and energy all so on point. Even with the onslaught of future bass at the moment, this one still sounds fresh as anything. A beautiful banger, no doubt.

Jetique - Love On My Mind (ft. Terri B!)
Lead by beautiful vocals, this is deep house at its best. Instantly commands your attention, delivering a divine groove, demanding you dance. Transforms all listening spaces into the coolest of clubs.

Anamanaguchi ft. Hatsune Miku - Miku (Carpainter Remix)*
Pure pleasure pop. Couldn't be any more bubbly or brilliant. Feels like you're floating in an 8-bit version of outer space, soaring above all cares and worries. Unapologetic easy listening.

Childish Gambino - Do Ya Like (Mark Melgo Remix)*
Warm weather is right around the corner and I'm looking forward to listening to more music like this, rounding out all day dance sessions, spinning in the summer breeze. Good vibes all around.

Destructo & Volac - What I Got

Russian duo Volac have teamed up with don of west coast deepness, Destructo to create an edgy, grind it out, house number that further propels the combination of rap and hip-hop vocals with deep bass house grooves. Destructo has been cultivating this style for the last couple years, along with the likes of Dr. Fresch and Night Bass Records. "What I Got" is yet a further example of the quality that can come out this pairing of slick, intimidating vocals and stormy, ominous production. It almost has a bit of a callback to bloghaus, in its rough sound design, built around gritty vocals, à la "Beeper" or "Hustler."

Certainly the scene at large has changed, as well as the expectations of the particular sounds and their delivery, but if we were to hear "What I Got" 10 years ago, I imagine it would fit in fairly well. Perhaps the biggest differences between this and a decade prior, is its slightly more refined digital sound design, and its dependence on deeper drums to drive the groove. "What I Got" succeeds in combining scratching effects, an ever growing atmosphere of intimidation, and a surefire shuffling groove. It commands attention while not being overly needy, it just bumps along doing its thing. Whether two hours or 10 years old, "What I Got" is a potent production, that I'm sure will garner a lot of club play. Pick up what Destructo and Volac got, for free via The Artist Union, here.

New Music For Your Weekend

Fridays are always the best day of the week, both for new music releases and for live shows. This week is no different, and is perhaps the best Friday of the year, in large part thanks to the highly anticipated debut EP, New Laces, from Pusher, and hometown heroes, Loud Luxury taking the stage at UNIUN. Below you'll find some of the releases I'm dead excited about and will be playing a ton this weekend. New Laces is a true artistic masterpiece, the first three tracks "Clear," "Tell You," and "Shake Down," are all in the conversation for my track of the year. Not only do they range in styles, but they showcase three different vocalists, for which Pusher so perfectly works around their lyrics. Add to that three more tracks with an additional three vocalists and you've got album that surely marks the official 'startup' of what promises to be a phenomenal career. Make no mistake, Pusher has been on my radar ever since I heard his remix of Ryn Weaver's "OctaHate," but New Laces will propel Pusher into the ears and hearts of music fans worldwide. I for one am anxiously awaiting his next live set, fingers crossed that he headlines a Toronto show soon, so he can really show off his awesome mixing style.  From Point Point's Record Record imprint comes, DZZ's debut EP Wishes. Bright and bleepy, the three originals and additional remix from Maxo, flow from a fluorescent factory of feels. A combination of Porter Robinson sentimentality and Cashmere Cat creativity, the shower of sparkles that is the 8-bit, lullaby-esque beauty of Wishes guarantees good feelings all around.  I think it's safe to say my favourite label is Monstercat, thanks to the consistent quality they pump out, not to mention they're the home of one of my favourite artists, Stephen Walking. Of course they also enjoy producers, Conro, Tristam and Aero Chord. The latter, Aero Chord, has Monstercat's latest release, "The 90s," which is a delicious depiction of future bass. Aero Chord offers up bounding bass and the soaring soundtrack-esque synths that make that decade so delightful.A close second in the race for my favourite label is AC Slater's Night Bass. The carefully curated content they release is always awesome, and Kry Wolf's Temper certainly fits the billing. Ballsy, big and bouncy the three track EP is everything we've come to expect from the duo. Fear not the dark of Night Bass as Kry Wolf are armed with a "Flashlight" that will have you in "Wavves" of ecstasy. Toronto's own Shaun Frank is riding some kind of high lately, having released massive records with The Chainsmokers, DVBBS and Oliver Heldens. "Let You Get Away" is however a solo production, and one without frequent collaborator, Delaney Jane. But once again, Shaun Frank fills our speakers with an undeniably awesome production. The man simply knows how to produce, especially around vocals.Another Canadian that's been on a tear lately, is Vancouver's own, Vanic. His latest, "Samurai" showcases his sharp ear for production, slicing and dicing synths around Katy Tiz's vocals, proving Vanic is not just a flash in the pan talent, but a true heavy hitter that can swing with the best. There's something about this Vera production that just captures my attention. Perfect for Pelican Fly, the cool Copenhagen producer pits big bass against raucous, rapturous wild sounds that remind me of RL Grime, Toto's "Africa" and Dem Slackers' remix of "Fifty What." I for one cannot wait to hear what else Vera has in store for us with the rest of her debut EP, scheduled to be released September 23rd. NGHTMRE is fresh off his killer collab "Need You" with Dillon Francis, yet may have just dropped an even deeper, darker and more dangerous death star of sorts. The veteran presence of Zeds Dead on "Frontlines" propels NGHTMRE into another stratosphere, likely launching this track into even more DJ sets and onto even more radio stations. Why not finish with a fire free download from Winnipeg, the city with perhaps the highest number of producers, per capita. Released on Kardoso's LUXE label, CCIV & PRZM have found a number of their tracks on Bump In The Hump, and you better believe "Mindmelt" will get a spin on Radio Humber as well. Whenever these two match up, the resulting track is pure power, and "Mindmelt" is just that. The bass is big enough to cause a concussion and make your brain bleed, but in a good way.

Out Of Cookies - Who's Them Boyz

The depth of the dutch scene seems to be more vast than even James Cameron's The Abyss, as we're continually introduced to rising talents like Out Of Cookies, whose latest track "Who's Them Boyz" dropped mere hour ago. It's available now for free download courtesy Ones To Watch Records. Starting with a splash of percussion and rapidly picking up intensity along with a flurry of deep, spluttering vocals, "Who's Them Boys" feels like a fresh combination of deep/bass house and jungle terror/trap styles. The way Out Of Cookies adds turbulence to the vocal samples ahead of the drop immediately reminded me of AC Slater and GotSome's "Move It Back," yet the drop itself is more reminiscent of Wiwek's machine gun style of mayhem.

Normally I don't like to project comparisons on artist like that; art is very much so a personal endeavour and making a comparison as such could imply copying or even worse thievery. However, in this case, I feel compelled to draw a connection to Wiwek, GotSome and AC Slater because of the sheer raw, neoteric nature of Out Of Cookies' sound. "Move It Back" remains one of my favourite tracks from the mighty Night Bass label and Wiwek's jungle terror stylings have inspired countless artists. Perhaps the title of Out Of Cookies' track is a reference to his influences, or maybe an allusion to his still widely unknown status. Whatever the case, it certainly seems Out Of Cookies is one to watch.

A couple weeks ago I tweeted a little insight into my iTunes star-rating system, and while making soundcloud playlists all weekend I thought it would be fun to make another playlist of the best tracks, not featured on Enlightenment For Your Ears, or Bump In The Hump for that matter. AC Slater, RYME & Cosella, Night Bass At The Hoxton

Last night, The Hoxton played host to a crazy party combining the forces of two bass heavy labels, BADLQQK and Night Bass. Cosella, part of the BADLQQK collective, took over the decks just as I arrived shortly after 11. Being the crafty local talent that he is, he started his set off with a cheeky remix of Drake's "Hotline Bling" with a female singer rather than the six god. But that wasn't the only remix of a local pop star. He also dropped his own edit of Chris Lake's bootleg mix of The Weeknd, "Can't Feel My Face." I'm with RYME on this one, really hope he uploads it, unfortunately Chris Lake hasn't even uploaded his version so it's doubtful, but we can still hope.

Cosella did an incredible job filling up the dance-floor and getting the crowd active. He played just the right mixture of old and new tracks, constantly working them over with filters and other knobs. I specifically remember him playing the Tom Staar remix of Dansson & Marlon Hoffstadt "Shake That," and his release on BADLQQK, "Elevator," which got people so hyped a fight broke out. However, the standout track for me, was a forthcoming one from Eyes Everywhere, that I'll be watching out for.
