Enlightened Listening for July 30

It's the Friday of a long weekend, so without further ado, I present this week's Enlightened Listening. Sorted from light, light-hearted and groovy to heavy, deep and banging, the 16 releases feature countless trusted names, several pre-album singles, and yes, a trio of awesome Anjuna offerings. Finally, I will note that, while not in the playlist, the two tracks I wrote about earlier this week, "Don't Tread On Else Matters" and "Only One," are just as highly recommended as the rest of these fine productions. Stream now the new music playlist below with each individual release linked at the bottom.

Machinedrum - Only One (ft. Angelica Bess)

Whether it's rain or shine where you are, it's sure to be a gloriously good morning thanks to sublime new Machinedrum. "Only One," the first single from forthcoming Psyconia, "a six-song exploration of the unbounded ideas found while experiencing creative flow," is so inextricably linked to that final word: flow. Not only does Machinedrum's brilliant breakbeat cascade captivatingly atop the groovy jazz bed, but the same can be said for Angelica Bess' breathless vocals that tumble, ebb and flow fabulously. Much like his remix of GoGo Penguin, Machinedrum's musical abilities are on full display here as he divines a delightfully addictive electro-organic combo. A fetching fever-dream, "Only You" is at times electrifying and exhilarating, and others, simple, stripped-down sublime (see the sections starting at 1:56 and 2:54). Let this polished, playful and all together potent pairing, "Only You," speak to your soul below, and get it now with a pre-order of Psyconia, which drops September 10th on Ninja Tune, here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Hudson Lee - Chasm

Each week, ahead of the new episode, I try to find a singular track that encompasses that week's mix. This week, that track comes from Hudson Lee, who is set to drop his album, Reflex Anglethis Friday. "Chasm," one of the pre-release singles, not only shares much of the same obsidian sonic plane as much of this week's dark dubstep and DnB, but it also matches said theme with its alluring, abstract, and most importantly, shaded album artwork. Featuring indomitable drums, destructive synths and eventually a jazzy, computer-virus-powered finale, it is exactly the kind of enigmatic genius we've come to expect from Hudson Lee. Get "Chasm" now below, pre-order it as part of Reflex Angle, and see Hudson Lee live twice this weekend, Friday and Saturday at Upscale Fest. Finally, catch Bump In The Hump live tonight from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud, here.

SebastiAn & Metallica - Don't Tread On Else Matters

It doesn't get much bigger than Metallica, so fittingly, they've enlisted more than 50 artists to take on the 12 tracks from their iconic, eponymous album, which turns 30 years old on August 12th. Spanning genres and continents, the Metallica Blacklist project features all kinds of incredible and unlikely artists and their renditions of the all-time album. J Balvin and St. Vincent are among the two earliest entrants, while Rina Sawayama, Weezer, Chase & Status, Dave Gahan and Darius Rucker, to name a few, are still in store, with the full compilation dropping September 10th.

However, today is about SebastiAn, who, as far as I can tell, is the only artist to take on multiple tracks, combining "Don't Tread On Me" and "Nothing Else Matters."  Throwing a curveball right from the start, SebastiAn sets the mood with a funky opening that features "an improbable encounter of Freddie Mercury hanging out with Prince in a smoky downtown L.A. rave." Surprisingly, or perhaps not, these groovy guitar licks fit fabulously with the bristling bass and James Hetfield's gritty vocals. Even better, the groove grows fatter and funkier with additional horns bolstering the sound, pushing things further towards the orchestral final two-thirds of the track. Just as the funkiness fades, the strings and horns swell into the meat of "Don't Tread On Else Matters," the ominous and stunning electro-symphony of "Nothing Else Matters."

Absolutely flooring, there is no denying the fever-pitch power of SebastiAn's recombinant rendition of these two Metallica mainstays. Listen below and find more of the Metallica Blacklist project here. FOLLOW SEBASTIAN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Catz 'n Dogz & Gerd Janson - Modern Romance (Bella Boo Remix)

Despite my best efforts, I inevitably miss a few fabulous records every Friday as I dig through countless sources to build my weekly new-music playlist, Enlightened Listening. One of said slip-through-the-cracks type tracks, Bella Boo's remix of "Modern Romance," had me immediately kicking myself. Capturing my attention with its first few fluorescent and colourful notes, this new direction is all kinds of cool. Like a trip to a candy shop for your ears, Bella Boo takes on the role of sonic confectioner glazing the Catz 'n Dogz/Gerd Janson collab with an irresistible aroma that, like a cartoon, will have you floating towards its tongue-smacking scent. While the sweetness of the new top notes is unmistakable, "Modern Romance" isn't just saccharine sapidity as Bella Boo has kept just enough of the original track's bitter, buoyant low end to counterbalance the sonic sweetness. And of course, it's all held together by the brilliant breaks that made the original so seductive, and indeed, scrumptious. Satisfy your sonic sweet tooth below, and check out the full remix package via Running Back Records' Bandcamp here.

Enlightened Listening for July 23

We've got another massive haul of new music in this week's Enlightened Listening. Leading the way is a monumental ten-artist collaboration led by Mix Master Mike. It's followed by two tremendous multi-track releases from Daktyl and Murlo, both of which are undeniable highlights of this playlist. Turning our attention back to singles, the next five releases move from the always impeccable vibes of Keys N Krates, through ISOxo's electrifying Sable Valley offering "Aarena," and into fabulously fat and fierce ELLM remix of "One Life." Quality Canadian content follows with Bensley, Sultan + Shepard and CRi, who you'll be sure to hear more of on Bump In The Hump. Restraint and beauty take center stage with the next three releases, each of which shines sublime. Taking a different turn, deadmau5 and Lights' "When The Summer Dies" gets a groovy, alternative mix. Powering into the final five releases, Theo Kottis kicks things off with a delightful double dose of sonic sunshine ahead of a ridiculously resplendent dub mix of "Cruel Summer." Turning darker, Claude VonStroke and Walker & Royce combine for a pair of brilliant Dirtybird drops. Finally, SĂ©bastien LĂ©ger's epic and immersive remix of "Alien" leads us into the fifth edition of Afterlife's unparalleled Realm Of Consciousness compilation series. Find this week's new music playlist below and each individual release linked at the bottom.

Full, Uncut Interview with Feyln

Recorded July 8th on Zoom, this is my full conversation with Toronto progressive-house and melodic-techno producer, Feyln. Topics included: his earliest inspirations and electronic origins, his status as a "club rat," which led to a love for the local sound, the Toronto scene (including ATTLAS, Simon Doty, Rhyot & EMERCIVE and the Mastermind crew: Crimsen, Oliver Wickham and ASHE), exploring and expanding in the future, the name Feyln (being alright with 'failing'), art vs business and the commodification of art, the return of live music and shows, and, of course, his episode of My Mixtape, which premieres this Saturday, July 17th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Simon Doty - House For All

My Mixtape is back with a new episode this week, and in turn, we'll be closing out tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump with a clip of my conversation with Toronto house and techno producer, Feyln. With that mind, there's no better track to tease tonight's episode than "House For All," from Simon Doty's Solaris EP. Not only is Doty known to straddle the line between progressive house and melodic techno, but he is one of Feyln's main inspirations, and like "House For All," it is the piano that takes the role of protagonist, propelling his upcoming episode of My Mixtape.

Catch "House For All" at the tail end of tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud, here. Find my full conversation with Feyln here tomorrow and come back Saturday at 11 PM EDT for the premiere of My Mixtape featuring Feyln.

Enlightened Listening for July 9

After skipping last week, Enlightened Listening is back with more than four hours of new music that you need to hear. Closing the book on last week, I'll note that Daktyl's "Hyperion" is from then, but I prefer it to the new single from his forthcoming mixtape. It, like so much of this week's playlist, features an incredible energy, a wicked vibe, and dope drums.

The other theme appears to be long-form releases (LPs or mixtapes) with Hybrid, Wizard, DJ Ride, and Attacca Quartet, each crafting a unique, cool, and compelling journey. Rounding out that first half, I've gotta give a tip of the hat to Ninajirachi's NLV/Sable Valley release, which is an absolute gas.

Still, the dope drums persist into the second half of the playlist as things get a touch more spacey with an awesome yehno remix package, another unreal Skream ifeel EP, and an Amtrac solo effort on OPENERS. Turning more dancey, and ever more groovy, the playlist continues with intoxicating originals from KUU and Peggy Gou, and a trio of top-notch remixes from Tensnake, Gerd Janson, and ABSOLUTE. Finally, the cherry on top, Chilly Gonzales with one that's sure to make you grin, "Music Is Back." Dig in now below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Have a great weekend!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Tale Of Us - Nova Two

Journeying into July, this week's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump is as epic as ever, showcasing all things acid, techno, trance, bass and house. Primarily taking place in the 120-130 BPM range, the slow build features a fistful of free fire, brutal yet brilliant bangers from Kannibalen and Subsidia, and yet another Unidisc remixed classic. But before then, sitting right in the middle of the episode is Tale Of Us' "Nova Two," an update on their 2018 Afterlife Realm Of Consciousness Pt. III epic. Released as part of CircoLoco Records' Monday Dreamin' Black compilation, this new piece perfectly straddles the line between prodigious power and pensive poise. It is expansive yet constrained, universal yet limited, elephantine yet tender; it always leaves you leaning in, hoping to hear more, wanting to ride on its endlessly awesome waves. And ride we will as Bump In The Hump builds even bigger in its second hour, concluding with a fabulous foursome that includes Cadence Weapon, Richie Hawtin, Tiga and Nocow. Stream "Nova Two" now below and catch it in the mix tonight, live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud hereFOLLOW TALE OF US: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
