Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: HNTR - Searching For Self (ft. Tribe Alexander)

Just as we did last week, we start this week's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump with an explosion of energy. Early on we trend towards techno and acid, taking in some fire forthcoming cuts from Cloverdale and ksd6700, the latter making a brilliant return to BADLQQK. But before then, we get to look ahead to the weekend with HNTR's epic introspection, "Searching For Self." Folamour - Tapes For The PPL #7

Frenchman Folamour has been on quite the rise lately. His Boiler Room set went viral, his edits are being played everywhere and he just scored a spot in my Top 100 Tracks of 2019 with his recent remix of Les Rita Mitsouko. Between keeping himself busy with a solid tour schedule hitting Europe, Australia and North America (including CODA April 9th), he's taken to Soundcloud to share a new 7th edition of his Tapes For The PPL mix series. Always soulful, funky and downright gorgeous, the organic grooves of this mix are to die for. This nearly hour long edition features some exceptionally cool cuts including some killer riffs via JKriv's rework of William & The Young Five "You Turn Me On" which bleeds beautifully into the lush Lucas Arruda track "Tamba Part 1" before breaking us all down to the Dazz Band's deliriously awesome "Magnetized." Horse Meat Disco's 10 Hour Marathon Set @ Oval Space

I don't recall exactly when I first came across Horse Meat Disco, but after just one play of their 2017 Essential Mix (here) I was hooked. Last year I was able to catch Luke Howard and Severino at CODA for what was likely my favourite set of the year, ultimately introducing me to a handful of my favourite tracks of the year. So when I saw that they were going to release a 10 hour marathon set as recorded at Oval Space London on October 5th, I was absolutely ecstatic. It's hard to imagine how many tracks they must've played over such a crazy span or how many I'd just have to get my hands on for repeat rinsing. Dig into the epic set below, and stay tuned for more from the fantastic foursome as they say they've got lots planned for 2020. Here's hoping for a followup to the fabulous "Falling Deep In Love."

Mixes For Thanksgiving Weekend

For us Canadians we've got a long weekend to look forward to and while it's likely to be jam packed with lazing around the house, I've compiled a list of recent mixes you can play to make the time pass more easily. You'll notice that more than half of these mixes are disco and house-centric, a variety I think ought to be acceptable to most in-laws and older generations, I have also included a couple heavier, more banger friendly affairs. Find brief descriptions after the playlist and note that the mixes marked with asterisks are available for free download. Enjoy and indulge in moderation!

Erol Alkan - Live @ Sónar 2019
It's hard to beat the power of an Erol Alkan live set, the man's got an incredible ear and an uncanny knack for putting tracks in a position to succeed. The tracklist is there but it may as well not be as this nearly two hour extravaganza of energy is far more than the sum of its parts.

Benzi - Girl Trapz Vol. Sixteen*
'Edat' expert and mix master Benzi continues to churn out killer mixes. Here he gives old standards a breath of fresh air with lightening quick cuts and grin-inducing combinations. More than that he's always got the freshest of the fresh, featuring incredible amounts of forthcoming fire.

Folamour - Tapes For The PPL #6*
Far more laid back and funky than the previous two mixes, Folamour delivers delightful disco vibes built around a live band feel. There's oh so much awesome instrumentation and it moves along with incredible ease. Put this one on while you're cooking or cleaning and the work will fly by.

LeBaron James - Music For Lovers Of Music Vol. 2*
While sharing the same spirit as Folamour, this one is much more sonically full and focused on the dance-floor. LeBaron James tap into tons of classic disco vibes with fresh cuts from the likes of Purple Disco Machine, Joey Negro and Dr Packer, plus one of my favourites of the moment, their "Party Starter."

Mighty Mouse - Autumn 2019 Mixtape (Part 1)*
Almost splitting the last two mixes down the middle, Mighty Mouse too taps Horse Meat Disco's "Falling Deep In Love" while also offering up a number of his own awesome edits including his recent Double Exposure "Free Love." Surrender to the sublime strings and melt into this magnificent mix.

Hunter Siegel - Live From No Neon @ CODA (Sept 7. 2019)
The dark plur powerhouse is somehow managing to get darker and this live set illustrates that perfectly. I'll admit I haven't been as consistent in my No Neon attendance as of late, but at the last open-to-close set I saw Hunter play it featured tons of techno and he certainly has a knack for it. Here he plays plenty of extended numbers doing incredible duty in his post-Volac/Phlegmatic Dogs set. Gotta love the Victor Ruiz remix of Moby's "Natural Blues." Bravo Hunter, bravo!

Tensnake - In Your System Vol. 10
While it was the Mighty Mouse and Folamour mixes that appeared in my feed today, it was this one that most inspired me to make this post. Tensnake takes his time with this hour, letting the magic of his mix slowly suck you in. It is incredibly smooth and full of shimmering, groovy beauty.

Greg Wilson - Live @ La Discothèque, Ibiza Rocks Hotel (09.09.2019)*
Who better to close this post with than one of my most trusted, go-to DJs. Greg Wilson nearly always gives away his live sets for free and we can only hope more DJs follow suit. Not only that but he will often answer inquiries for IDs in the Soundcloud comments. His mixes are always clean and fun, showcasing decades of experience in the scene and unreal range in terms of track selection and vibe curation.

Greg Wilson Live @ Brixton Disco Festival (04.27.19)

Last month the one and only Greg Wilson opened Electric at the Brixton Disco Festival and today he's gifted us with a free download of said set. As he says in the upload's description, the two and a half hour set starts with "a downtempo groove, gradually building towards a frantic conclusion." This evolution allows it to be used in a multitude of ways: as background beats as you embark on a long drive, as an extra jolt of jocundity with your morning coffee, as inspiration to get through an extended workout or quite simply as a party starting mix for your own festivities.

As always the wise and wondiferous Wilson has injected his mix with all kinds of awesome edits and infectious toe-tapping energy. Whether it be Donna Summer's "Love To Love You" sucking you into outer-space, the brilliant Blackbyrds' "Walking In Rhythm" giving a little glitter to your giddyup, or the fabulous funk of Gwen McCrae's "Keep The Fire Burning" propelling the groove, there's no shortage of ear-catching offerings. However my favourite bit about Wilson's mixes is always the sublime selection which inevitably introduces me to new favourites, of which there are two standouts in this mix. The frantic funk of Tony Rallo's "Holdin' On" arrives shortly after the hour 32 mark leaves my head spinning, while the closing track, Harry Thumann's "Underwater," I also heard Horse Meat Disco play last month at CODA and still has my jaw on the floor. Babert & Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue - Good Lyfe (Severino Remix)

Friday night I finally got the chance to see Horse Meat Disco in person (at least half of the quartet as it were). Love and freedom ruled CODA as Severino Panzetta and Luke Howard hit the decks for an extended set full of fabulous edits and originals alike. all oozing with funk, biting brass, sensational strings and piquant piano. True to the talk around Horse Meat Disco and their long running party at The Eagle, the atmosphere was incredible and the dance floor was packed the whole night.

While I'm still relatively green when it comes to the greater disco catalog (certainly in comparison to Severino and/or Luke), there were numerous tracks that I knew right off the bat and was able to enjoy in utter ecstasy (see Dimitri From Paris's edit of "Salsoul Rainbow" or Joey Negro's dub of "Found A Cure"). On the other side of things, Horse Meat Disco don't have many of their own productions, however Severino did just release a solo remix effort, taking on Babert & Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue.

Out now on Midnight Riot Records, this "Good Lyfe" remix is a brilliant blend of the bottomless bounce and groove of deep house with the distinct flair of disco. The chords craft a cool, luxurious italo-disco dance floor primed for your feet to follow the playful percussion all as the vocals spin around your head. It is a hearty and powerful production, that while featuring extended dance sequences never seems to drag, but rather further welcome you to the floor for more fun. Get Severino's "Good Lyfe" here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Rezz & 1788-L - H E X (Dropwizz Bootleg)

Friend of the show Kavi Indatissa returns to his Dropwizz moniker for a beastly bootleg mix of Rezz and 1788-L's "H E X." Seemingly combining all of the fetid facets that make up his recent rancid remixes, this production is pure putrescence in the best way possible. It oozes ominous and drips with disgust, sending sickening shivers down your spine, especially as the original malodorous melody succumbs to the stank of Dropwizz's diabolic design. Veteran Toronto DJ and producer Greg Gow has been moving people for the better part of two decades, most recently with the three track People Mover EP which came out Monday on Swedish imprint Truesoul. Throwback Thursday: Marlena Shaw - Touch Me In The Morning

Nothing like a little disco diversion especially after all the egregious Halloween heat. But why take the time to showcase this 1979 song from Marlena Shaw? One, it's quite simply stunning and two, it's become clear that Skream has been rinsing it out during his latest tour. He played it last month at CODA, and a video appeared on my Twitter today, incorrectly credited as an edit, before Skream corrected it as the original mix. I can honestly say I have not been in a club environment like that night.

I struggled to describe the kind of set Skream played, one because its contents spanned nearly half a century, and two because maybe more than anyone I've seen, he played tracks and artists with whom I was entirely unfamiliar. That said it was not just a treat to take in sonically, but visually as well. His work on the decks was clearly competent and focused, but it was more about his crowd interaction, and I'm not talking about being on the mic or jumping on the decks throwing cake or anything like that. He was obviously leading through his selections, but with such a wide swath of genres and sounds you might think it difficult for people to keep up, stay engaged and entertained. No matter, he succeeded in that sense incredibly, especially as he worked into the final throws of the night with tracks like this.

"Touch Me In The Morning" was the most memorable of the extended disco dance section, when more than anything he was leading the party through his own obvious enjoyment of the tunes he was selecting. Sure the crowd had thinned since the peak hours, but the strength of Marlena Shaw was unavoidable. Pure power in the piano and her vocals leave your heart palpitating, swooning and swinging in ecstasy, blood pulsing through your veins to the rhythm of the bass, as the intensity rises towards the title line. The first few minutes are fantastic and cannot be discounted in the beautiful build, but when she reaches fever pitch after the 3 minute mark and the triumphant trumpet enters you're helpless but to melt into the club, becoming one with the world, taking you "to a place where no one's ever been." It's safe to say not only was everyone in CODA touched early in that morning by Skream's sublime Shaw selection, but I for one left the club to that cold morning light a satisfied soul.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: DJ Sneak - Psycho Killer

For quite some time there had been whispers of an electrifying bootleg remix of Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" from OG house head DJ Sneak. Finally released Friday on No.19 Music, this nearly 7 minute acid techno odyssey does indeed follow the classic bass-line and eerily intriguing lyrics, although re-recorded by Charlie Sputnik. Remixes of iconic tracks such as this aren't rarities, they are however when you're talking about this kind of quality. Club and festival weapon alike, get "Psycho Killer" here.One week from Halloween, Bump In The Hump plays host not only to "Psycho Killer," but a number of tracks looking ahead to this weekend's Halloween themed parties. There's a handful of DnB from the Halloween Freakout Saturday at 401 Mini Indy (RSVP), one of my favourite mashups as Handlebar welcome 80s band doppelgangers (RSVP), and an epic remix from Riva Starr who headlines CODA for Creatures Of The Night (RSVP). Purple Disco Machine @ CODA

Friday night I finally crossed out one of the names at the top of my must see list, as Purple Disco Machine brought his blend of disco funk, soul house to CODA. With disco's popularity seeing a surge, there's been few who have benefited more than PDM, who has been ablaze behind the decks and in the studio over the past year plus. He's been on big time BBC slots in Ibiza and the Essential mix, as well as authoring chart topping originals and remixes. Really this was the perfect storm, and it certainly came to life at CODA Friday night.

The atmosphere was palpable immediately upon arrival as the now typical all black outfits were much fewer and far between as the line at the door was littered with bright, floral patterns. People were giddy to get in and meet up with their friends, and questions as to what tracks Purple Disco Machine would drop arose as the anticipation to take the floor became more real. Upon entering we were welcomed with a new stacked wall of speakers at the back end of dancefloor, essentially enclosing the square with surround sound. CODA has always been known for good sound, but this certainly cements its status as the spot to be.

Already busy an hour before Purple Disco Machine's set, Simon Jain was doing a great job getting the groove started. Sporting a bright ice cream cone patterned tank top and flanked by half disco balls, Simon spun smooth disco house numbers full of string swells, funky bass lines and dope drum grooves. I nearly melted when he took to Yuksek's remix of L'Imperatrice "Vacances," yet this was just the beginning as PDM was soon to follow.

When the familiar face of Purple Disco Machine and his own floral outfit emerged in the booth and the transition became immanent, the crowd cheered thanking Simon Jain and roared in anticipation of PDM's presence on the decks. Building slow and strong the groove and warmth of his set was omnipresent as he offered the perfect blend of nostalgic feels and contemporary production potency. He broke out many of his own productions and a number of repackaged classic samples, all to great appeal.

One of my favourite things about disco and house sets is their long form, extended dance sections. These oppose the kinds of sets happening at Lost Lands this weekend, where its more about rapid-fire drops and banging bass blows. Here you can come and go more, drift in and out of tracks, always able to rejoin the reliable dependable four on the floor presence. You can explore the club and the space, no need to drop everything and run to the floor to go crazy to the drop, just play around how you like and let the music move you. And while Purple Disco Machine wasn't really following A-Trak and Todd Terry's "DJs Gotta Dance More," he was indeed in tune with the crowd, literally and figuratively playing with them. Friend of the show Frustra continues to craft heavy hitting house numbers. As we've heard before his productions often hearken back to an earlier time in electronic, whether it be french touch, bloghaus or in this case, acid. The aptly titled "Acid Vision," which dropped free Friday, combines much of what makes Frustra's sound so strong and full. Featuring Brooklyn's RIFFA, it has an incredible oomph in the drums, awesome atmosphere, perfectly punctuating samples and and acid drop that will leave you bending over backwards on the dance-floor. A Taste Of No Neon's 3rd Anniversary

It's hard to believe that 1) this time last year we were gearing up for the The Hoxton finale and 2) that No Neon has been one of the coolest parties for 3 years now. Further, playing the comfy confines of CODA, and their superb sound system, made No Neon's 3rd anniversary even more unbelievable.

Billed as a Hunter Siegel open to close set, he was actually joined behind the decks with Autoerotique, who Hunter said has been part of the most No Neon B2B sessions. No word whether this was because Hunter's "entire music collection [got] corrupted" the night before. While both brought out some new weapons, including a banging remix of Ekali and ZHU's "Blame," the night focused in large part on throwbacks, paying homage to the history of this epic party series.

I've compiled a short list of tracks played last night, starting with perhaps the No Neon anthem, "OTF" which was premiered at one of the previous shows. It also runs through a spell of dubstep, culminating in the sublime switch from the original into Sub Focus' remix of Rusko "Hold On." Hunter also managed to work in multiple MK tunes, including "Look Right Through" and "My Head Is A Jungle." He truly touched on every genre in the epic set, with only the smallest of samplings below. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Van She - Idea Of Happiness (Robotaki Remix)

The Weekend Warm-up returns to Bump In The Hump tonight. Each week I'll feature a variety of tracks from shows happening in and around the area the coming weekend. This episode features Robotaki, who brings his double billing tour with Manila Killa to Velvet Underground tomorrow, Oct. 19 (RSVP/Tickets). We've had new Robotaki tracks the past two weeks, so I figured I'd go for the trifecta with his beyond beautiful take on Van She's "Idea Of Happiness." The early release is genre tagged as "excitement" and it is just that. It's jump for joy dance quality and some kind of incredible radiance, as big as the sun, and just as warm. And if it's not the best tease for a weekend, I don't know what is.This weekend also has Chris Lake coming to CODA (RSVP/Tickets), with support from Dombresky, who you'll also hear from in tonight's episode. The two hours of new Canadian electronic music includes the usual fire finale with trap, dubstep, DnB and is capped by a fresh remix of a Deadmau5 classic. Dombresky - The Cookout Guest Mix 053

Earlier this week French producer Dombresky graced SiriusXM's Electric Area for a guest mix on The Cookout. Now, I've been a fan of his for a while now, and with tracks like "Be Real," "Hardcore," and his DJ Snake "The Middle" remix, how could you not be? My only beef is that he's not been to Toronto, but that's also changed this week when he was announced as support for Chris Lake's October 21st stop at CODA during his Lose My Mind Tour. While it's nearly impossible to predict what anyone might play on a given night, this mix for The Cookout is at worst a great introduction to the rising talent. What I like most about Dombresky is on full display here: his versatility in both production and mixing. He dabbles mostly in house, but as we've seen the the last year or more, house has really become multidimensional, with bass, deep, tech and other subgenres blowing up. He drops a little bit of all of that in this set, from the delightful open of Boston Bun's "Missing You" to Eli Brown "Got The Power" and the Oliver Dollar, Daniel Steinberg collab "Perc It Straight," there's so much to dance to. However, I'm particularly taken with the way he's used Eli Brown's "3am," not just because it's such top notch tune, but the way it sets the mood before transitioning the mix into a more brighter after-hours vibe.
