Joshua James - Coarse (Justin Cudmore Remix)

Some pairings make perfect sense, yet further still, some trios top that. Case in point, the most recent release on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound imprint. Joshua James' Coarse brings the brilliance in design and delivery that we've come to love from the ambitious alternative electronic output. However that's only two sides of the triangle, as we've yet to add Brooklyn's Justin Cudmore into the equation. Certainly the original is awesome in its own rights, however Cudmore's contributions add an extra allure, stretching the track into an epic acid journey. The movement remains massive, however apart from the physical movement on the dance-floor, the lion's share comes internally, as you navigate the seas of thought in your mind. Set sail with stream below and purchase either as vinyl or digital here.FOLLOW JOSHUA JAMES: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

SevSquad Mixtape - Episode #1

It's been near a year of silence after Sevla's 4/20 release of Aylen collaboration "At Da Spa," however he came back this weekend with a half hour of hard-hitting tunes in the first episode of new SevSquad Mixtape series. Highlighted by IDs from both LUKAV and CRaymak, the tracklist is chalk full of fire and free-form bass. It serves as a strong re-introduction to the wide ranging heat Sevla has served up through his releases including originals "Bandits" and "Consider This" as well as his remix of Shaun Frank's "Let You Get Away." The mix is at times rapid-fire with its explosive power pounding through the first seven or so tracks, raising the bar by backhanding us with banger after banger. However as the mix hits the halfway mark, there's a bit of a breather to allow the blood rush back in with the beyond barbaric "Babatunde." But if you thought that was as dark, harrowing and medieval as this mix could get you'd be gravely mistaken. The slew of savagery that follows is simply stunning. Whether you're alone, on the bus or at a pre-drink this is sure to have you throwing elbows, so be aware of your surroundings. Stream the mix below and be sure to follow Selva's socials below as we wait for more fire in the future.FOLLOW SEVLA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for February 22

When was the last time Fake Blood, Feed Me and Rusko all had new releases? It's got to be damn near a decade. That trio, along with a strong selection of EPs and a couple sublime singles make this edition of Enlightened Listening one to remember. Find brief descriptions below along with stream.

Yuksek - I Don't Have A Drum Machine
Maybe not the most inventive or game-changing track you'll ever come across, but a beautiful, groovy homage to the life and love inherent in disco.

Haywyre - Panorama: Form
Another exceptional EP from Haywyre, both in the cohesiveness of the tracks and the dazzling display of musicianship in each. Form makes his tour even more of a must see.

Low Steppa - You're My Life
The kind of quality we've come to expect from both Low Steppa and Defected. Delightfully dancey.

Undercatt - Cadabra / Vegas
Big time builds whose payoffs are more than worth the wait. That said, the journey is an enjoyable one.

Fake Blood - The Fear / Garms
Theo has not lost a step, he's as unique and hypnotizing as ever. Dark and brooding brilliance.

Blossom - Big Shot
Night Bass never misses and Blossom brings some really tough stuff for her debut there. The blend of bass house, garage and grime, especially in "Anime" is sick.

Feed Me - High Street Creeps
Not quite the same raw, raucous electro I first enjoyed from Feed Me, but still as powerful as ever. The diverse deliveries include fire in "Barrel Roll" and "Satanic Panic" and resplendent restraint in "Feel Love" and "Defiant." Certainly Feed Me's most polished product.

Modeselektor - Who Else
Wickedly cool creations, at times incredibly jacking and perhaps even killer in "Fentanyl," others more melodic and slow burning. Straddling the line between the two, "Wealth" is my favourite of the bunch.

Rusko - MEGARAD
While there's been countless artists follow in the footsteps of Rusko, no one does it quite like him and this EP is the perfect example of that. He and the EP have both got range and energy for days, and I fully expect these tracks to be rinsed for for the foreseeable future. I'm here for all of the tracks, but I just can't get enough of the nostalgic vibes "Hardcore Raven" doles out.

Full, Uncut Interview with Kavi Indatissa (aka Dropwizz)

Last week I welcomed Kavi Indatissa, the prolific producer behind Dropwizz and his namesake g-house project, Kavi, to the Radio Humber studios. Since we didn't get a chance to connect with him when he delivered his Dropwizz mix, this conversation touches on both projects but focuses on his Kavi project, as that's the mix that goes this Saturday, February 23rd at 11 PM EST. We tackle the following topics: his introduction to electronic music, transitioning from electro to trap to g-house, his love for rap and hip hop, his penchant for remixes as he's taken on both RL Grime and G-Eazy under both monikers, his more recent work on originals, his episode of My Mixtape and what he has in store for the future.FOLLOW KAVI/DROPWIZZ: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD/SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump: February 20 (Season 8, Episode 22)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Double Doses of PRZM & Dropwizz/Kavi

This week's episode of Bump In The Hump features two multi-talented mainstays in Jorel Minuk and Kavi Indatissa. Both will be appearing twice, under different monikers, as Jorel brings the trippy bass with frequent collaborator CCIV for "fuzz" as PRZM and drops some slick house as the P in MAP and "Small Talk." The second side of this double up comes from Kavi Indatissa who is also back for his second episode of My Mixtape this weekend. First he's in the mix as Dropwizz with another take on RL Grime then closing out the episode with an exclusive look at an unreleased original with fellow Toronto house producer Pastiche. Stream the three released tracks below and catch the Kavi x Pastiche ID immediately ahead of my conversation with the hardworking producer tonight from 7-9 PM EST.As usual Bump In The Hump will also get you set for the weekend, which includes Marcus Visionary, Radiant Baby, Groves B2B Stranjah, and Bill Slinnton [note: find RSVP and tickets to events linked through artists]. There's also a whole heap of heavy bass ranging from wave and DnB to midtempo and dubstep. Brace yourself for one of the best episodes to date. Catch it live on Radio Humber and after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Lil Data - Hickory

This past Friday saw the release of Lil Data's four disc, 24 track PC Music mega-package Folder Dot Zip. As futuristic as they come the release is chalk full of mind-bending, electronic manipulations and synthetic sound waves. Some tracks are obviously more listener friendly, while others offer a more experimental, avant-garde genius. Described by the artist himself as, "A live coding musical parable where the initial melody is transformed into something unrecognisable and seemingly non-repeating, but nevertheless kinda catchy," the 24 track extracted epic is undoubtedly a dazzling digital adventure.

Highlighting the fourth disc, "Hickory" does a brilliant job straddling the line between the audio assault of some of the proceeding productions and the pop music underpinnings of PC Music. Its got an undeniable allure through some strong analog feels the only seem to get stronger, and somehow more human, as the track progresses. It's as though its got a direct connection to the collective soul of humanity and is uploading and evolving as it plays though. Perhaps a look into the future, and the
oneness of man and machine, prepare yourself for our robot overlords with Folder Dot Zip, here.FOLLOW LIL DATA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Childish Gambino - This Is America (omniboi Remix)

Coming just over a week after it was named both Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys, Childish Gambino's viral and critical success "This Is America" has once again received the remix treatment, this time from the awe-inspiring omniboi. Omni Rutledge is no stranger to taking on the hottest of hot hits, as he previously scored an indelibly divine remix in his jazzy flip of Migos "Bad And Boujee." More recently, the multi-talented musician rebuilt Charli XCX's "Focus" as a slice of chill lounge luxury, highlighting his brilliance with a video of his rebuild here.

Once again taking to Twitter to share his work, omniboi gave us our first glimpse at "This Is America" as an early Valentine's Day present, whetting our appetites here. Now in its full glory, the lush soundscape of the Soundcloud stream below is a head-spinning stunner. No, you know what, it's even better than that. It's an experience. The kind of track whose power can get you out of a rut, realign your perspective or renew your priorities. Like the original, it is gospel genius combined with brilliantly contrasting components. At this point, we can only hope to capture this uber cool creation with a download or purchase link, and I'll update if/when one becomes available. But for now enjoy the stream below.FOLLOW OMNIBOI: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Full, Uncut Interview with LeBaron James

Last weekend I welcomed Jeff Webb and Mark Beshai back to the Radio Humber studios for a chat ahead of their episode of My Mixtape, which airs this Saturday, February 16th at 11 PM EST. This is that conversation in full, and if you'll recall the last time these two were in, we bounced all over the place and the same thing happened this time. Always energetic, enjoyable and full of fun!

We discuss the transition from The NightOwls to LeBaron James, the "sharing good music" ethos behind their sets and edits, the process of finding and using little pieces of gold in sampling, working with Hatiras and Spacedisco Records, their upcoming releases, their episode of My Mixtape and more!FOLLOW LEBARON JAMES: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Inner Life - I'm Caught Up (Dr Packer Rework)

Disco edit extraordinaire, Greg Packer just shared his rework of Inner Life's 1979 brilliant boogie number "I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)." As Jeff Webb and Mark Beshai mention my interview with the LeBaron James boys, the key to disco edits is honing in on the little nugget of gold and building around its eminent glory. That's certainly the case here with Dr Packer keying in on the quality of the original, but rather than limiting himself to the vivacious vocals, the funky bassline, string swells or even the dance-ready drums, he's recast each of those awesome elements, jacking the whole track up a notch. And this is really the best part of not just what disco edits do, but what Dr Packer does so well. Certainly one could just go back and listen to the original, but edits like this 1) allow for DJs to play and share the record more freely, and 2) in many cases, acts as a remastered version, further highlighting all the originals' qualities. At the time of writing, this seems to be the only version online, so until there is another link for download/purchase, enjoy the stream and follow Dr Packer below.FOLLOW DR PACKER: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Justin Jay - like that

Cool character, Justin Jay just unleashed an awe-inspiring jaunt in "like that" on his label, Fantastic Voyage. Joining the already released "i'm shy when i'm around you," this too follows Jay's lighthearted, energetic and youthful output, showcasing live instrumentation amidst a dazzling electronic design. Impossible to nail down, it touches, or rather, dances between a number of influences, becoming its own brand of beguiling beauty. Fantastically full of vigor, the nearly five minute production cruises along like an interstellar starship powered by love. It is glamorous and groovy, shiny and sublime, and somehow crazy complex, while still supremely easy to move to. Saddle up and stream "like that" below and find it as part of Everything Will Come Together, Pt. 1 via Beatport, iTunes, Spotify, etc here.FOLLOW JUSTIN JAY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

2019 Grammy Predictions

In breaking news, I've learned the Grammys are tonight. I kid, but basically that's what this whole post is going to be: a little levity to close out the weekend. I'm gonna do my usual shtick of making predictions for categories I know/care about, and again it'll be my 'who should win' and 'who will win' double pick scenario, because even with two picks per category I'm still out to lunch most times. Oh and one more thing before the predictions, will the dance/electronic categories be in with all the obscure categories? Or will they continue to disregard their impact and treat them as a sideshow not fit for their floundering broadcast? I'd lean towards the latter, but let's just get to the good stuff, shall we?

*** Update: Results noted with ✓ or ***

BEST DANCE RECORDING

Above & Beyond - Northern Soul (ft. Richard Bedford)
Disclosure - Ultimatum (ft. Fatoumata Diawara)
Fisher - Losing It
Silk City - Electricity (ft. Dua Lipa)
Virtual Self - Ghost Voices

Who Will Win: Silk City
Who Should Win: Silk City
Reasoning: I feel like the Academy is equally likely to go with any of Disclosure, Silk City and Fisher as they are seemingly the most widely-popular productions in the list. My bet is that they will make the 'right' choice with Silk City as they love both Diplo and Mark Ronson, and it is indeed the most accessible and perhaps most successful production of the bunch. That said, I would not be surprised if "Losing It" got the nod, as love it or hate it, it was without a doubt the club track of the year.

BEST DANCE/ELECTRONIC ALBUM

Jon Hopkins - Singularity
Justice - Woman Worldwide
Sofi Tukker - Treehouse
SOPHIE - Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides
TOKiMONSTA - Lune Rouge

Who Will Win: Justice
Who Should Win: TOKiMONSTA
Reasoning: This was a tough one. Obviously any of these could take the trophy, but I feel like they'll be too scared to go with SOPHIE, who might be the obvious choice in many eyes. The other nom that set itself apart from the group in terms of hype was Singularity, and I think it's got a solid chance. However, due to last year's seemingly unfair Kraftwerk catalog/best of winning, I see them doing the same with Woman Worldwide this year. That said, I've got Lune Rouge as the most enjoyable album through and through.

BEST REMIXED RECORDING

LSD - Audio (CID Remix)
Charlie Puth - How Long (EDX's Dubai Skyline Remix)
Gabriel & Dresden ft. Sub Teal - Only Road (Cosmic Gate Remix)
Kygo ft. Justin Jesso - Stargazing (Kaskade Remix)
HAIM - Walking Away (Mura Masa Remix)

Who Will Win: EDX
Who Should Win: Mura Masa
Reasoning: This marks the 5th time Kaskade has been nominated in this category since 2008, and his 4th time in 5 years. Surely this is his year right? But sadly for him, I think not. I put CID and EDX in a near dead heat, with the advantage going to EDX in the kind of dance delivery that seems to get recognized most at The Grammys. My choice is obvious though, as I love both HAIM and Mura Masa, and see "Walking Away" as by far the most adventurous and progressive production in the list.

PRODUCER OF THE YEAR, NON-CLASSICAL

Boi-1da
Larry Klein
Linda Perry
Kanye West
Pharrell Williams

Who Will Win: Kanye West
Who Should Win: Pharrell Williams
Reasoning: I see the Academy going for drama with this pick, and while he's likely deserving after an incredible year, there's no doubt Kanye will have people talking. That said, I believe Pharrell's output is more wide-ranging and because of his contributions to Timberlake and Grande's albums, he ought to become just the 4th person to win this category 3+ times.

***OTHER, MORE UNINFORMED PICKS***

Jake Robertz follows with a sick six track EP.  We then change gears for two, top-notch, uber-cool creations from Red Axes and ABSOLUTE.. Then comes MK with yet another inspired remix, which leads into a genius, jaw-dropping original from Haywyre. Finally, PINEO & LOEB drop the best cover album of the year in ELEVATION. Stream this week's Enlightened Listening playlist below and find individual releases linked at the bottom. Enjoy!

Pyramid - Contact

French producer Pyramid just offered up a first look at both his new label Space Designer and its debut release, the title track from forthcoming EP Contact. Always operating in the most lush landscapes, the Lyon product invites us aboard an interstellar sailboat, as we cruise the cool waves of "Contact." Not busy by any means, there's plenty of space for each element to dance around your eardrums, gently letting the gilded guitar, smooth synths and affective vocals churn up something strong in your heart and soul. Falling in line with its lyrics, it forces you to take your time and focus on its little intricacies. It exudes peace and calm, bringing beauty to the fore and letting it flourish in our ever expanding universe. It is, simply put, a slow-burning sensation. Joe Goddard - Moebius Trip

2019 continues to be a big year for Joe Goddard, whose track "Moebius Trip" just made its way to Soundcloud. It joins the already shared "Jack Come Back," as both drop Friday on Cin Cin alongside "LakE" and "KatE" from Kiwi. Whereas "Jack Come Back" displays monstrous qualities, commanding the dance-floor with a fury, this new addition takes a much lighter, more seductive approach to inviting listeners to the floor. Yet these are not the only Joe Goddard cuts to watch out for, as he also just shared another EP in four track output Pull The Plug, with help from Kool Keith on the title track. Pépe - H0RT4 3D1TS

A day after the world celebrated commercialism, Valencian electro authority Pépe turns the focus to charity with his H0RT4 3D1TS. Bringing new original breaks to familiar tunes "Controlla" and "Tom's Diner," he's pledged the "proceeds to local queer charity LAMBDA." Both edits deliver a simple yet strong and all too alluring twist that's most certainly capable of commanding the dance-floor. The internal action in the Drake take is brilliantly bouncy and unquestionably crisp. But where "C0NTR0LL4" comes as a tight four minute package, "T0M'S D1N3R" takes a longer route, really letting the familiar folk lyric lead. That said, Pépe's production provides all the energy necessary to bump and grind your way through the eight minute epic. Whether it's a wow-inducing intrigue or a hypnotizing take on a classic, these two edits deliver dance in droves. Stream via Bandcamp below and buy here.FOLLOW PÉPE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for February 1

Another week down and another great list of releases waiting for you. This edition of Enlightened Listening features plenty of tracks to keep you warm wherever you are, whether they're 'literally fire' or moving enough to get you doing the same. Leading things off is an incredible album from Luttrell.

Into Clouds is beautiful and powerful throughout, but if you want a selling point before diving right in, check out any of the middle 4 tracks, you don't be disappointed. Following that are six singles mostly on the dancier, groovier side, or at least starting moreso that way, and ending more tech-driven.

warner case dropped a track on Kitsuné and its got the same sublime salaciousness and funky aloof feel I've loved from the start. Mercer takes us poolside with another neo-disco delivery in "Your Love." Staying with steady quality, Purple Disco Machine offers up a sensational, expansive take on the already awesome Years & Years/Jax Jones joint "Play." It just keeps getting better however as Alex Metric too has offered up an epic remix, filling all rooms and ears with his fat, funky take on Parcels "Lightenup." More you say? How about The Chemical Brothers?

Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have a new album on the way with No Geography due out April 12, and we got a taste of it today in "Got To Keep On." It's stupid good, and I don't think there's anything else to say about it. Classic Chemical Brothers, beyond brilliant. As if there we're enough epic remixes already, let's add one more to the pile in Eagles & Butterflies nearly 10 remix of "Enough To Believe." Just like the other Bob Moses remixes, there's an undeniable allure, but ascendingly electronic delivery makes this mix an absolute marvel.

Finally, we close things out with some fire in LICK's fearsome four track DIMENSION EP and Rusko's remix of "Rebel Love." It feels like hardly any time has passed since I first heard LICK in his remix of Malaa, and now here he is going off with electrifying originals on Deadbeats. Shutting things down Rusko once again shows off his status as Don of the Dub. His design is like no other and it shines, or rather, burns bright throughout this mix. Find all the tracks linked below playlist.

Luttrell - Into Clouds

warner case - idunno

Mercer - Your Love

Jax Jones ft. Years & Years - Play (Purple Disco Machine Remix)

Parcels - Lightenup (Alex Metric Remix)

The Chemical Brothers - Got To Keep On

Bob Moses - Enough To Believe (Eagles & Butterflies Remix)

LICK - DIMENSION

PLS&TY - Rebel Love (Rusko Remix)
