Enlightened Listening for August 6

It's that time again, time for another edition of our weekly new-music playlist, Enlightened Listening. The theme of this week would appear to be triumphant returns/blasts from the past. The first of those three thematic leaders is Fake Blood, who delivers 10 new tracks in the latest release centred around Ian Urbina's The Outlaw Ocean. Immediately after that in the playlist is TWRK classic "BaDinga," as refreshed and reloaded by DJ Sliink. Finally, Point Point make a triumphant return with their first new release in over 3 years. Staying with the retro trend, that's what The Weeknd delivers in his new single "Take My Breath," a spiritual successor to "Blinding Lights."

Of course, that Weeknd track is a standout, but there's plenty of others worth paying attention to. Both of the LPs from Monkey Safari and Lakou Mizik/Joseph Ray are incredible rides, just as the singles from Ben Böhmer, Franc Moody and Louis La Roche are utterly intoxicating. Finally, I just have to give it up to tails for an impressive EP on bitbird, as photos of the sun is brilliantly inspired. Stream the playlist, organized for maximum flow, below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Enjoy!

Bump In The Hump: April 17 (Season 8, Episode 30)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Just John x Dom Dias - Tango Town (ft. DillanPonders)

The dynamic duo that is Just John and Dom Dias continue to make massive waves. Just as they did for Game 1, the two talents hit the stage in the so-called 'Jurassic Park' ahead of Raptors/Magic Game 2 last night. This comes after their salacious success "Soundboi" was chosen as the Raptors' official playoff anthem and can be seen on their Twitter here. Check out both John and Dom's socials (linked at the bottom of the page) for highlights of the event.

Enormous endorsements aside, the duo remain hungry as they continue to cook up new heat, some of which they be performing and celebrating Friday night at the Drake Underground. Named the hottest concert in Toronto in April by NOW Magazine, it's no wonder the Don III Release Party has since sold out. However you can get a taste of the festivities both now and tonight on Bump In The Hump as I'm happy to feature "Tango Town" with fellow performer DillanPonders who joins Jayemkayem and Ty Senoj along with the guests of honor Friday. Stream now below and find event details here. After a delayed and minimal episode last week due to illness, I'm still feeling the effects of this terrible flu but will do my best to keep up with the flurry of new tunes and not to cough on air (no promises). That said there's a ton of new tracks to get your motor running. There's more than an hour of house, disco and techno, an absolutely genius cut from Robotaki's Anachronism, and some brilliant bass in the form of trap, dubstep and more in the Fire Finale. Listen live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or catch the episode in its entirety as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Apashe x Cherry Lena - Feeling Good

John De Buck aka Apashe has had a big year. His first offering, the wild 3 track Requiem EP kept us satisfied until he tapped one of its vocalists in Black Prez for "Do It" in September. Both of those releases aside, this week may be Apashe's biggest of the year. Today he drops the video for "Majesty" with Wasiu (see here), which follows the killer cover/remix of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" alongside fellow Montreal talent in Cherry Lena. Obviously dark and destructive, the contrast in the music and vocals is what makes this take so strong. Like Requiem it's a little different from your normal fare, but the big bounding trap strides give a weightless feel much like the titular sensation of "Feeling Good." Catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, and pick it up from your favourite retailer here.Tonight's episode is truly jam packed with many of my favourite artists of the year and some of the best releases including a number of exceptional EPs from Chali 2na, Wizard Of, Lingopolus, Just John x Dom Dias, Ricco Harver, Jacques Greene and others. That selection alone should be a good indication of how wide the sounds range tonight. Closing the episode is a clip of my conversation with OAKS, ahead of his episode of My Mixtape this Saturday at 11 PM EST. Catch it all live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber or cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Extended Weekend Warmup

All this week NXNE is taking over the city with dozens of events, and seemingly more popping up each day. The best part of NXNE is the low cost and freedom to go between events for with merely one wristband (details here). Then again you don't even have to purchase anything for the Yonge-Dundas Square Festival Village events (Friday through Sunday) which include CHVRCHES, Tinashe, Jazz Cartier and more. That said there's still several non-NXNE shows happening and I'll be showcasing them on Bump In The Hump as well. Below you'll find a list of those events you'll hear from and about tonight. Click through for more details, to RSVP and pick up tickets (if necessary).

Thursday June 14th

NXNE Club Land Curator Series (Jayemkayem): Dom Dias* x Just John*, Ace Dillinger & more

Friday June 15th

NXNE Festival Village: Jazz Cartier, Azealia Banks, U.S. Girls, Cadence Weapon* & more

Friday Night Live Colour ROM Proud: Valeroo, New Chance* & more

Istolethesoul FM 004 (Afterparty): Internet Daughter x Eytan Tobin*, Skratch Bastid* & more

NXNE Club Land Curator Series (Secret Songs): Swim Good Now*, RYAN Playground* & more

Saturday June 16th

Parallels*, Dana Jean Phoenix*, Mecha Maiko* & Mellow Fields* @ Handlebar

Jungle Funk Recordings Showcase: Deko-ze, Jerome Robins*, Adam Nathan & more

While it may seem all of this looking ahead to the weekend will take up the whole two hours of Bump In The Hump, there's still plenty of room for brand new music from across the country. The summer of Chromeo continues with another remix of "Must've Been" before Head Over Heels drops Friday. Pusher makes his triumphant return with "Sober." We get funky with tracks from Sparkee and Zanski's EPs, and get a first play of Hanz Ford's forthcoming track "Abyss." All this and more live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, and cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Post Malone - I Fall Apart (Young Bombs Remix)

Just last week I played Benzi's edit of Post Malone's "I Fall Apart" as mixed with Ekali and QUIX's take on Porter Robinson's "Language." This week our own Young Bombs have added their names to the ever growing list of Post Malone remixers with their take on his latest viral sensation. As I said on last week's show these are by far my favourite Post Malone vocals, and I'm glad I get to bring them to you again this week. I've been on the Young Bombs bandwagon after first hearing their remix of Katelyn Tarver, and this may be my new favourite of theirs. They've let the guitar guide the track alongside Malone's crooning, before building a brilliant and emotive future bass drop. The chord choices only further cut to the core, making this one of the most gut churning yet beautiful productions in recent memories. Grab your copy for free via Hive and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight. This mix of gut churning beauty is a theme tonight, with new tracks from Miles Away, Bishu, and Vanic, all supplying it in droves. Of course there's also pure bangers and dope grooves from the likes of Hunter Siegel, Hanz Ford, Keys N Krates and Landyn. We've also got a hearty helping of disco as we look ahead to a stacked lineup Friday with Spacedisco's Winter Warmup at One Loft featuring Hatiras, Vincent Caira, LeBaron James and others (RSVP/Tickets). As if that weren't enough, friends of the show Loud Luxury are back in town taking over Factory Fridays at UNIUN (RSVP/Tickets). Rounding out the trio of shows Friday night is TOKiMONSTA who hits Velvet Underground with support from fellow friend, Dom Dias (RSVP/Tickets). Finally, in a fitting end to the fire finale there's a new track from Toast and Motus, the latter of which joins Wraz for the first B2B episode of My Mixtape. Hear my interview with them tonight, ahead of their episode Saturday January 20th at 11 PM EST. All of this and more on Bump In The Hump, Radio Humber, live from 6-8 PM EST here and cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud.
