Enlightened Listening for August 27

I've had a terrible time keeping track of the days this week, missing my usual Bump In The Hump rollout entirely, but I've managed to pull myself together today for another shot of new music in Enlightened Listening. Leading the way into this week's playlist is pure bliss from Caribou. He's followed by a trend towards epics with grand designs from Helsloot and AVIRA, each of whom author awesome rides. Again epic, but undeniably in a league of its own, "Rainy April" finally gets its release nearly three years after its first play at ABGT300.

Turning towards the piano, TSHA's new single "I Know" completes her extremely cool & captivating OnlyL EP. Again all over the piano, as Paul Woolford always is, "Be A Rebel" gets an extended second take with New Order rejigging Woolford's remix. The second in a run of four remixes in a row, the playlist continues with Marshall Jefferson's masterful remix of the already exquisite "Music Saved My Life."

Headfirst into flames, the gyrofield remix of Hudson Lee's "Reanimate" sets off a run of energizing and oft-fierce DnB. While striking wildly different chords, the next two tracks, Flume's remix of "On A Mountain" and Heymac's "Katina," each tug at the heartstrings. Where "On A Mountain" scorches with sparking synths, "Katina" cools with pristine piano. Finally, the playlist closes with two uncapitalized Canadian talents, flowanastasia and thook. The former is fabulous on "River Flows," the second single from her forthcoming debut LP; the latter sends us off into DAWN, a tremendous seven-track immersion in all kinds of off-kilter, organic goodness, which once again reaffirms thook's status as a sonic artisan.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Michael Sparks - Juggernaut

Much like last week, we've got a heavy-weight episode of Bump In The Hump ready to tear up the airwaves tonight. While there are a number of epic tracks that run nearly ten minutes, the theme of this week's episode can largely be boiled down to this banging three-minute affair from Michael Sparks

Always a hard hitter, Sparks has had a heck of a year, starting with a couple of banging bootlegs which were followed in short order by several originals, including "Come Back." Whether or not he's on the comeback trail is for you to decide, but there's no debating the banging nature of his recent releases. Here, "Juggernaut" is just the latest example of his explosive energy and destructive disposition. It pushes tonight's episode to hellacious new heights before an extended section of disco/synth-driven grooves, which in turn give way to a fire finale built of DnB. Catch all the action on Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud, here.

Enlightened Listening for August 13

Another week, another incredible edition of Enlightened Listening. Coming in at just under 40 tracks and 3 hours, there are all kinds of goodies in store here. First up, Brock Edwards dazzles with an awesome saxophone-led dub of his own "Up At Dawn." A second dub follows as MK makes good on his "Chemical" with a classic IV dub. Upbeat energy follows with a trio of DnB tracks, highlighted by a divine instrumental from Platinum Breaks.

Moving to longer-form releases, the next two come from Juelz and Feed Me, both bringing the bass with their own established brands of fire. Resetting things with a run of singles, the playlist pushes on with an invigorating take on Alan Parsons Project classic "Sirius," courtesy Armin van Buuren and AVIRA. Staying nostalgic, 1990-classic "The Age Of Love" gets a fearsome facelift from Charlotte de Witte and Enrico Sangiuliano. Finally, our run of fire ends with a bang thanks to the ingenious guttural growls of Kage in "The Zone."

Part punningly, part sonically fitting, the next three releases follow from "The Zone," as "Perpetual Motion" eventually leads to "The Hangover." The Fort Romeau mix of "Perpetual Motion" is equally epic and elegant, the following Neighbour remix of "Going Late" is groovy and gorgeous, and finally, Bush League's "The Hangover" is unavoidably infectious and undeniably head-pounding. Lastly, the playlist closes with lush, sensual stuff from Moullinex, Anderholm, and CRi, each of which features sublime, soulful synths.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: HNTR - Searching For Self (ft. Tribe Alexander)

Just as we did last week, we start this week's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump with an explosion of energy. Early on we trend towards techno and acid, taking in some fire forthcoming cuts from Cloverdale and ksd6700, the latter making a brilliant return to BADLQQK. But before then, we get to look ahead to the weekend with HNTR's epic introspection, "Searching For Self." While he's been making waves on the mighty mau5trap as of late, HNTR will always and forever be the baron of all things black, the overload of all things obsidian, the king of No Neon. And it is No Neon that returns to CODA this Saturday, August 14th as part of the wonderful Reboot Music series (see rebootmusic.ca for more). Mikey Palermo and James Blvck are set to join HNTR, and you can too, absolutely free if you arrive before 10:30 PM (RSVP/info). Stream "Searching For Self" below, and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact on MixcloudFOLLOW HNTR: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Casper Cole - Shelter EP

Blaufield Music, the home label of legends Booka Shade, just dropped a new EP today in the epic Shelter from the UK's Casper Cole. The four-part journey through progressive techno delivers all of the elements that make Booka Shade and Blaufield a staple in the scene. Despite being inextricably tied to techno, there's just something so warm, human, and indeed full-of-life that Shelter feels more like a cruise through the recesses of our consciousness rather than a collection of club-churning floor-fillers. That said, the movement in each of these tracks is undeniably infectious, speaking directly to our souls through its spellbinding synths. While each of the four tracks satisfies with its sonic sojourn, I'm particularly fond of "Remedy" and "Undertones," both of which engender awesome grooves that not only reach irresistible levels but also seem to hold some hidden meaning, an edifying, inspiriting essence. The power of "Remedy" strengthens its listeners, helping them stand taller and more confident. Aptly-titled, "Undertones" will have you leaning in, hanging on each note, stuck on each swell, growing with each glimmer.

Monday Grab Bag

Mondays are most often the driest day of the week when it comes to 'discovering' new music. That said, today was totally different as I kept coming across wicked releases everywhere I turned. So, with that in mind, I've compiled six of said releases here. Unfortunately, they're spread across streaming services, but rest assured, each release can be enjoyed in its entirety below.
Discovered via Soundcloud's The Upload algorithm, Cortese's Emma Cannon-led "Girls Like You" is ridiculously cool and ever so catchy with that spellbinding swing. Another one from The Upload, "1984" doesn't have anything to do with Orwell, but rather the Martha And The Muffins' single from that same year, "Black Stations/White Stations." Seamless sampling and a more hefty backing make it a wicked dancefloor weapon. Finally, the 8Kays' Eleatics EP rounds out the Soundcloud section of this Monday mix, and what an excellent EP it is. I keep going back and forth on whether I like the originals or the remixes better, but you really can't go wrong. Both versions of "Respect Me" are incredible in their mix of restraint and rippling techno power, just as both mixes of "Young Souls" manage to infect you with their otherworldly grooves and alien effects.
Effin's debut on the mighty Monstercat further cements his status as an arsonist as "Unlucky" is a breathtaking blaze. Like the 8Kays originals above, the most incredible thing about this track is the contrasting clean, minimal sections against the mayhem of percussion and bass in the drops. And then there's the infernal horn section. If you're not already, be sure to keep it locked on Effin
More of the aforementioned minimal stuff thrives here with Dunk's deep and dark DnB EP, Signal Loss. Moody, cold and callous futurescapes give this release the feeling of a neo-noir game of interstellar espionage. In fact, the more I listen to it, I feel like its high-stakes tension would work well against the scenes of Gene Hackman tailing his prey in The French Connection.
Finally, we round out this collection with two killer remixes from Champa B and Tim Reaper. Both highly-charged rollercoaster rides, "Serenity" is somehow more fire than "Meridian," with its relentless percussive charges and bass booms, while the latter leans more cool and contemplative, especially through the pristine piano.

Enlightened Listening for August 6

It's that time again, time for another edition of our weekly new-music playlist, Enlightened Listening. The theme of this week would appear to be triumphant returns/blasts from the past. The first of those three thematic leaders is Fake Blood, who delivers 10 new tracks in the latest release centred around Ian Urbina's The Outlaw Ocean. Immediately after that in the playlist is TWRK classic "BaDinga," as refreshed and reloaded by DJ Sliink. Finally, Point Point make a triumphant return with their first new release in over 3 years. Staying with the retro trend, that's what The Weeknd delivers in his new single "Take My Breath," a spiritual successor to "Blinding Lights."

Of course, that Weeknd track is a standout, but there's plenty of others worth paying attention to. Both of the LPs from Monkey Safari and Lakou Mizik/Joseph Ray are incredible rides, just as the singles from Ben Böhmer, Franc Moody and Louis La Roche are utterly intoxicating. Finally, I just have to give it up to tails for an impressive EP on bitbird, as photos of the sun is brilliantly inspired. Stream the playlist, organized for maximum flow, below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Enjoy!

Lettice Rowbotham & Fenna Rhodes - Wave (Youngr Bootleg)

Tremendously multitalented Manchester product, Youngr is at it again with another awe-inspiring bootleg. Performed entirely on his Roland Fantom (see video below), Dario Darnell once again presses all the right buttons, firing off the drum, cymbal, string and synth samples with playful precision.

"Wave," by Lettice Rowbotham and Fenna Rhodes, features gripping violin, immaculate vocals and indeed a deft electronic backing, and Youngr does a dutiful job at keeping the soul of said original alive and well. That said, this new version of "Wave" is decidedly more electronic, more groovy and more dancefloor-filling. The vocals and violin continue to serve as the punctuating highlights, but the new underlying electronics take "Wave" to new energizing heights. The fun of this bootleg is undeniable and, especially if you're watching the video, utterly infectious.

Play along with Youngr below, get a free download of the "Wave" bootleg via Soundcloud and be sure to follow his socials (at the bottom) for more!

Shire T - London. Paris. Berlin.

Chris Davids, one-half of Maribou State, is set to drop his debut solo album Tomorrow's People later this month. Last week, the project's third single, "London. Paris. Berlin." showcased Shire T's more restrained, organic and melodic side, especially following the earlier, more electronically charged, acid-tinged offerings, "Blue Kiss" and "Full Attention."

All but abandoning the darker, more aggressive and driving sounds at the heart of this project, Shire T instead turns inward here for a soulful slice, nailing the nostalgic theme with tender play on his childhood piano. That said, this is no mere downtempo, ambient tearjerker. The electronic essence remains as the synths guide the gorgeous organic instrumentation. And what a crisp, cool and captivating ride "London. Paris. Berlin." is. The growth, both in groove and instrumentation, is simply sublime, especially as the vocals, piano and synths all swell together.

Further proof that Tomorrow's People is a can't miss project, stream "London. Paris. Berlin." below. Pre-order the album, which is set to drop August 20th on Maribou State's Dama Dama imprint now, here.
