Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Crimson Child - Unmasked EP (The Remixes)

Even before Crimson Child's debut EP Unmasked was fully released, hype began to build about some of the forthcoming remixes. With names like TenGraphs and Moore Kismet among others it's clear why. Now you can grab each track absolutely free and find one in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight. As is often the case, the show starts with nearly an hour of house (ranging from deep and tech to bass and g). That said the transition is quick as the second hour features a whole bunch of bangers starting with DnB and midtempo before turning towards experimental, dubstep and more. Listen live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or find the full back catalog on Mixcloud here.

Qrion - When You Want To Rave

Queen Qrion has once again delivered a cool dance-friendly house number in recent self-release "When You Want To Rave." Following delightful deep cuts alongside Spencer Brown for Anjunadeep and a spine-tingling remix of Dugong Jr (covered here), she's back to solo original efforts with this throwback track. Built upon a slowly charging acid bass-line amidst classic break/rave elements, "When You Want To Rave" does indeed satisfy the urge to dance, turning any listening environment into your own thumping underground sweat-house. The cool chords combat the high paced percussion and heart-palpitating bass power, ushering you into a euphoric club with the perfect mixture of moving bodies and air conditioning. Press play and allow the acid to transport your consciousness to the heart of 90s UK rave culture with "When You Want To Rave" below.FOLLOW QRION: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for July 26

It's that time of the week, however the moment passed me on a busy day and I was unable to get this edition of Enlightened Listening posted on its proper day. Adding further insult to injury, I've got a massively bruised thumb so typing has been difficult. That said, the music goes on and you can find an epic playlist of new tunes below. Highlights include: Above & Beyond with Seven Lions; an 8-track album from Hot Since 82; remixes of Elephant Heart's "Lenguas" from Justin Jay and Kotek; the final two parts of Kotek's Sonoglyph Pt. 1 EP; a four-pack of fantastic singles from Bakermat, Friendly Fires, The Knocks & DJ Shadow; and DnB from Sub Focus and Bensley via his Muskoka LP. Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday: Hot Chip - Don't Deny Your Heart (Joe Goddard re-edit)

With Hot Chip's album A Bath Full Of Ecstasy having been released just over one month ago, I felt it was time to turn back the clock and focus on perhaps my favourite remix of Hot Chip, a re-edit from member Joe Goddard. Taken from 2012 album In Our Heads, "Don't Deny Your Heart" was the third single and features some of my favourite elements of all of Hot Chip's incredible catalog. As always Alexis Taylor's voice stands as the pristine pillar at the centre of sublime synths, genius grooves and masterful mix of communal vocals. That said, upon hearing Joe Goddard's 2013 retake it was clear that the pieces laid down in the original weren't quite given the glory they deserve.

More upfront with the funk and energy, as well as the vocal samples and little licks, Joe Goddard's re-edit really lets loose. It feels almost fearless it in its delivery, landing body blows right from the repackaged start. However the genius of Goddard comes in his thoughtful re-positioning of the shimmering strings sweeps and splashy cymbal work, setting us up for the eventual return to the brilliant opening synth bed. And this is where I must stop and address the hilarious mondegreen (misheard lyric) at the beginning. Noted by Stuart Maconie on BBC Radio 4 here, it was said tweet that brought me back to "Don't Deny Your Heart" and now has me saying "Willie Thorne" with each listen.

But back to the music, or dance-floor as opposed to the karaoke bar as it were. This edit does indeed propel listeners more towards their feet with the music forward re-fix. The more upfront percussion (steelpans especially) and extended groove sections really play into the track's title and subsequent lyrics ("don't forget to breathe"), give me and my heart exactly what we desire. My listening habits generally lead me to more music forward productions and this certainly delivers that, while still remaining true to the original's integrity. A god-send, Joe Goddard never fails when he lends his abilities to a track, even more so when he does it twice over. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Bart Skils & Weska - Polarize EP

Toronto's Weska seems to have found himself a home on the legendary Drumcode label. Nearly five years ago he first received support from head honcho Adam Beyer and now this week he's seeing his latest work make waves with the likes of Carl Cox and Maceo Plex playing "Polarize" at the epic Exit Festival in Serbia (see clip here). The two track EP of the same name is as brilliant as it is big, offering up equally potent and tempting techno adventures. Stream below and hear one in the mix tonight.A darkened and titanic episode, this week's Bump In The Hump is driven by bangers (DnB, dubstep and bass) with the exception of a handful of warm wandering numbers ranging from electronica to jacking and disco house. In a long line of remixes, we've got the much anticipated Low Steppa remix of "Spaced Invaders" as well as other standouts from Kneptunes, Ciel and STUND. Catch the above and more live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Mighty Mouse - Summer 2019 Mixtape

Disco magician Mighty Mouse has just offered up his latest mixtape with over an hour of gorgeous grooves and intoxicating edits. Right from the jump the "Summer 2019 Mixtape" is downright divine, opening with dope Defected release The Vision's "Heaven" and half of the duo, Kon's edit.

Killer cuts continue to flow with Mighty Mouse's own edit of Diana Ross riffing relentlessly onward. After the heat of James Curd comes back to back cool numbers from Coflo and Jasper Street Co., both of whom take us to disco church. The next Mighty Mouse edit comes in the form of Change's incredible beauty "Angel In My Pocket" which is yet to be released, but I'm hoping comes available in the next email update (sign up here). After some awesome horns and brilliant bongos, we're greeted by the giant groove of Boston Bun's "Don't Wanna Dance," which is the kind of track that sure to "Blow Your Mind." And jokes aside, the next track of the same name lives up to its title as the sample at its core, "The Rubberband Man" is one of my all-time favourite tracks. Wrapping up the mix Mighty Mouse unleashes yet another edit, this time taking on ABBA before bidding adieu with the sensational "Thunder In My Heart."

Enlightened Listening for July 19

Once again I'm overwhelmed by the amount of music this Friday (and the rest of the week) brought. So, just as with last week's Enlightened Listening I've got to keep it short and simply draw focus to a few of the 16 releases showcased in the playlist below. Early on there's a couple cool orchestral and orchestral-adjacent cuts, each incredibly well produced. Later on we get Baltra's brilliant and massive album Ted which I believe would play perfectly as you cruise the streets at night. Directly following that we get funky with Sparkee and Tuxedo, the former being absolutely fantastic through all four parts. "The Kids" has already become an anthem of mine this summer, and I totally foresee "Want Your Love" doing the same. After those two funk fiestas come three jaw droppers. "Heaven" is instantly one of my favourite tracks of the year, and why not, its got everything. The same goes for "No Price" which can boast Chromeo and Dr Packer on a single track. Rounding out that trio, Madeaux comes through with perhaps my favourite production of his in "I Want You." Once again he absolutely slays the sub-bass, sending shivers down my spine. After that is an unadulterated foursome of fire progressing from the power of Dillon Nathaniel through to X&G's electrifying design. All that and more below.

Throwback Thursday: The Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme

Fifteen years ago this month the then duo of The Shapeshifters unleashed the undeniable majesty of "Lola's Theme" on the world." In fact tomorrow marks the 15th anniversary of its immediate chart topping success in the UK. Jacking up a Johnnie Taylor sample from the 1982 track "What About My Love," Simon Marlin and Max Reich added vocals from Cookie and one of the world's most played disco house tracks was born. Not only was its success sweeping, but its groove certainly could be described as such as well. It is a spinning in ecstacy type production and has spawned countless remixes and recastings, in large part thanks to the captivating quality of its epic orchestra-like allure. In fact as I write this I'm listening to Spotify's playlist of tracks named "Lola's Theme" and I barely noticed a difference as Pete Tong, Jules Buckley and The Heritage Orchestra's version played.

Watch the original video and find a few of my favourite versions (minus Prydz) in Spotify playlist below.

Bump In The Hump: July 17 (Season 8, Episode 43)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Trinity Loops - Avalon Acid

Doing Bump In The Hump every week makes me acutely aware of the trends in music and without a doubt 2019 has seen an increase in acid. Of course this does not come exclusively from Canada as the same can be said for so many of my Enlightened Listening playlists too, but it feels like acid may be at an all-time high, and I for one am fully here for it. With more than a couple cuts featuring upfront acid on tonight's episode, I felt it was only right to showcase new duo Trinity Loops and their debut release "Avalon Acid." Made up of Stacey Sexton and Adam Harding of YUNG DUMB Records, there isn't much available in the way of Trinity Loops, however Stacey has her own free party this Saturday at The Embassy Bar in Kensington Market. While her selection on the night of seems to be tailored more towards vocal house numbers and cool chillers, I would not be surprised if she slipped in some techno or stuff more like her Thirst Club mixes. Get "Avalon Acid" below and hear it in the mix tonight.Along with the offering of acid on tonight's episode, there's the usual heaps of house, a brief RnB & Soul respite, and a bunch of bangers ranging from dubstep and DnB to midtempo and experimental. Catch Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact on Mixcloud here.

Mall Grab - Growing Pains

Jordon Alexander, better known as Mall Grab, just released a four track EP on his own imprint, Looking For Trouble. Growing Pains was born out of "a number of unfinished projects, somewhere in between grime, broken beat, rave and electro," and it is the title track that best exemplifies this ready to burst blend of beats.

Setting the scene, "Growing Pains" does indeed grow, slowly spreading its electro rave roots as the beat rattles around your ears with an awesome atmosphere. The drum introduction to the cavernous quality of the first room-shaking bass booms around 1:25 mark is more than enough to have you breaking out your best footwork as you attempt to keep pace with the propellant groove. Little licks and fun flourishes keep the rest of the raucous and rollicking production plenty pleasing it progresses through its dirty, dance dungeon-esque drops.

Just as Joe Goddard's Pull The Plug EP, punishes with electrifying energy, Growing Pains too is torturous to those unwilling to exercise their right to dance. Enlightened Listening for July 12

This is, without a doubt, the largest ever edition of Enlightened Listening, and as a result I simply cannot address each of the 25 releases individually nor will I list them below. That said I do believe this is perhaps the best playlist in terms of fluid listening, so dive into the 42 track, two hour and 42 minute new music extravaganza below. It opens with some bright summery tunes that should certainly get your toes tapping. The fourth track in changes the mood a bit, especially as it comes from Cassius. Directly after that, Chris Lorenzo utilizes the classic Masters At Work sample, once again proving its timeless quality in his dope deep delivery. A few tracks later we see Cloverdale drop off an exceptional EP on Dr. Fresch's young imprint. Staying with newly founded labels, the legendary Tommy Trash graces Botnek's World Famous Headquarters with the ridiculous "Ripper."

The mood of the playlist shifts after that, turning towards extended engrossing numbers from Clarian and Tinlicker, the former giving us a fantastic cinematic EP. Then, the surprise of this Enlightened Listening, Devo (yes, the "Whip It" group) deliver a supremely cool cut that doesn't seem at all out of place in this playlist. Staying cinematic, Canblaster comes through with a literal soundtrack piece made for a video here. Keys N Krates follow that with an 11 track beat tape ahead the second single from Wave Racer's forthcoming album. Things then turn DnB with a triple shot from our UK friends. The energy is obviously up following that as SYN continues to kill it, delivering a diabolic banger in "New Rave." Two more Canadian kids then follow that in Kraysh and ZABO, the former completing his Void EP. In a fire finale of sorts, the power pairing of Eprom and G Jones send us spiraling into infinity.

Throwback Thursday: The Slow Waves - Undertow

For today's Throwback Thursday post I'm going to do something a little different. While this track is over seven years old, I had not heard it until this week and almost mistakenly credited as new in this week's episode of Bump In The Hump. Apparently Main Course had been updating their Bandcamp page and, as a follower, an email arrived in my inbox. Instantly falling for the b-side "Undertow" I gobbled up the download and dropped it into the mix. However upon further inspection I realized this was the debut release from the now prolific Main Course. So instead of spinning it on air I'll gush about it here.

Known for their remixes, The Slow Waves broke through with this beautiful 2012 original that feels more like an 80s track, especially with its undeniable soundtrack quality. And it is this cinematic quality, and the soundscape that it enjoys, that has me so hooked on "Undertow." Throughout the course of the track, and not just because of the guitar riffs, I'm reminded of the opening number of perhaps my favourite album of all-time, The Cure's 1989 classic Disintegration.

Just as "Plainsong" opens with a long intro, "Undertow" washes you clean of expectation and readies you for the baptism of bliss that awaits. Once the track does indeed kick into gear, you are immediately sucked into its stirring strength as the guitars and synths fill you with a sense of ease and serenity. And if I can go further towards The Cure connection, it is this same feeling that rides throughout Disintegration. Their troubled waters suck us into their grasps, however we are alright with this reality, feeling at home in this helplessness. It is our fate and we are more than at peace with it, we are truly in love with it.

Give in and drift away with the "Undertow" by way of The Slow Waves.FOLLOW THE SLOW WAVES: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Colin Thomas - Afters EP

While it would be hard to say artist x or artist y has had the biggest 2019, Toronto's Colin Thomas certainly has to be in that conversation. Already four EPs deep with a total of 13 tracks released this year, there's no arguing Thomas has taken 2019 by the throat. Big, bad and bossin bass-lines lead his hard hitting house tunes and that's on full display in his latest, Afters EP out now on Nite Records. While the b-side "Vodka" shows a bit of brightness, the title track is as dark as its subject matter even adding some acid to really cement the scene. Get them below and catch one in the mix tonight.
Afters fits perfectly into tonight's episode which features a flurry of dark house and techno. That said, there's still a strong serving of more sweet tasting summer type tunes. Some of the sweltering heat we've felt in the last week comes to the fore in the Fire Finale as we get a trio of psy-trance face melters. Catch Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Innellea - Afterlife Voyage 016

As the new year turned over there were a couple mixes I had ben returning to with incredible frequency, but none more than the 13th edition of the Afterlife Voyage series which I wrote about here. Now as we make our way into the second half of the year, a new mix from the Tale Of Us led imprint has captured my attention. German duo Innellea first floored me with the inspired and intense power of "Vigilans" and now today they've offered up more than an hour of their masterful melodic techno.

Like the name of Afterlife's recent compilation, this mix seemingly takes place in a unique realm of consciousness. While it is obviously conducive to movement, this trance-inducing hour could easily be enjoyed while lying on the floor in a dark room as Innellea's sounds suck you into another dimension. And this is the beauty of techno and, more specifically, Afterlife's unique take on it. They always deliver an interstellar allure whose core is truly captivating even through its extended transportive delivery. The sounds themselves are often alien yet still seem to speak to us on a primordial level, eliciting previously unknown emotions and sending shots of adrenaline and other hormones coursing through our veins. It's no wonder you see such visceral emotions on the faces of ravers when the camera pans to the crowd at shows where music like this is played. This Afterlife Voyage is pure primal power.

While a tracklist would be nice, and I'm sure one is forthcoming, it is indeed unnecessary for the enjoyment of this mix, so just sit back and let Innellea intoxicate. I will however note that the last track has been identified as Innellea's own take on The Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius," a closing number they've reportedly used several times before. Seahawks - Eyes Of The Moon (Joe Goddard Remix)

Joe Goddard is here to start your week off on the right foot with a fantastic remix of ambient psychedelic duo Seahawks. Taking on the title track from their CASCINE released album Eyes Of The Moon, Goddard has delivered a bright plucky affair stretched out over eight minutes. Building a new bed for the dreamy original's oozing ambiance to flow over, Joe's drum delivery and always cool craftsmanship will surely satisfy any desire to dance. Growing slowly as elements are added, we're finally greeted by vocals in the third minute as lyrics and extended chords add some semblance of humanity to the exceedingly alien appeal. However as the groove evaporates in the midsection, the landscape of this lunar creation becomes even more psychedelic and alien as though floating above the countless craters on the moon's surface. As the trip concludes Goddard guides us into the ether with a fantastically funky finale. Stream now below and make "Eyes Of The Moon" your own here.FOLLOW JOE GODDARD: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for July 5

A quick turnaround from the last Enlightened Listening and a quick turn into the weekend leads to this brief look at a still fantastic and varied group of tracks. ASHE opens things up with a thoughtful EP that leans further into his acoustic techno. Next up a trance turn as Edu Imbernon delivers a dope Anjunadeep cut. Gorgon City stay hot with a tribute to Chicago house in "Elizabeth Street." After that is Annie Mac's hottest record, a genius growing groove from Theo Kottis. Building even bigger still, KiNK captures our attention with a brilliant recasting of Krystal Klear's exceptional "Euphoric Dreams." MK then delivers the first remix after the release of Mark Ronson's Late Night Feelings and as usual hits it out of the park. One of the most teased and highly sought after tracks of the year follows as David Penn sends us into ecstasy with his heart-melting remix. Gears change as the playlist begins to close with Flux Pavilion showing a new side that has me hearing classic Nero. Finally I get even more nostalgic with Infected Mushroom, one of my earliest loves, and their Monstercat killer "Kababies." Stream everything via Spotify below and get individual links at the bottom. Enjoy your weekend!

ASHE - Letters To Myself

Edu Imbernon - S.Y.L.

Skream - Summer Time Vibes 2019

The cutting edge of cool Oliver Jones, better known as Skream, just offered up more than an hour of summer tilted tunes. In fact this mix, which he's labelled "Summer Time Vibes 2019," was originally made for a friend in honour of the "glorious weather" but Jones since decided to share it publicly.

While Skream says a tracklist is forthcoming, there are several standouts as to this groovy, 80s disco/house and the like mix. Early on we're welcomed by Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" whose bass-line gives me a distinct Steve Miller Band "Abracadabra" vibe. That's followed shortly by a very cool and funky version of The Doobie Brothers "Long Train Running." Later on we're graced with some lively disco in the form of José Martí's ebullient "Viveros." As we get deeper into the mix so do the grooves. Cinthie's cool cruiser "Everything I Say" is followed by K-Hand's killer "Without You." Finally Skream walks off on a win with Lovebirds brilliantly beautiful "Want You In My Soul."

Unfortunately the mix is currently only available for streaming so enjoy it now below.FOLLOW SKREAM: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Average Gypsy - Good Girl Queen, Badmon Ting (ft. FRASE)

The connections made at festivals can be immediate and profound, and seemingly that is the case here with Vancouver duo Average Gypsy and the track that tells the story of their chance encounter at Coachella. "Good Gal Queen, Badmon Ting" illustrates the attraction of opposites and the playful intertwining that often accompanies such an encounter not just through its lyrical content, but through its blend of bass-, trap- and future-house. Tied together by FRASE's vocals "Good Gal Queen, Badmon Ting" is a special piece all around. Find it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight.
Vocals loom large in this episode with a few following in the same vein as the above, while others you may be more familiar with find new beds from the likes of Nick Bike, Jerome Robins and Troy Power. There's a deluge of disco, heaps of house, and plenty of power. Don't miss two all new hours of Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud.

Enlightened Listening for July 2

A busy long weekend could've eliminated this edition of Enlightened Listening, but after wading through releases a theme of garage, house and acid emerged making this 10 track playlist an easy build. We open with Adrian Lux who delivers a divine synth journey that, while opposing the nocturnal nature of Jacques Greene and Cadence Weapon's Night Service, leads beautifully into that lush soundscape. Getting back in the bright builds Bonobo bathes us in his brilliant "Linked" which, like so many of these tracks, eases into acid. Turning towards house, Deetron offers up an engrossing and equally gorgeous track that succeeds through sublime vocals, polished piano and a wicked rolling groove. Low Steppa then enlists Johan S for "Leaving" which offers up a taught tech bed, excellent for extended dance sessions. Taking an interstellar turn, Robert Babicz's sun-riser "Starchild" brings the warmth and life of solar flares to the cold hard hull of techno. Staying in perpetual motion, Honey Dijon drops off an energetic take on Jayda G's anthem, garnering extra acid as it goes. 80s energy runs rampant in PYLOT's "Fearless" which faces the finale head on like a conquering hero. Perhaps that hero should be called the "Demon Cleaner" as Cardopusher's track of the same name brings much of that same energy, sending shivers of unease down your spine. Enjoy Enlightened Listening now below.

Adrian Lux - Life On Mars

Jacques Greene x Cadence Weapon - Night Service

Bonobo - Linked

Deetron - Body Electric

Low Steppa & Johan S - Leaving

Robert Babicz - Starchild

Jayda G - Stanley's Get Down (No Parking On The DF) [Honey Dijon Remix]

PYLOT - Fearless

Cardopusher - Demon Cleaner
