Enlightened Listening for January 31

This first month of 2020 closes on a high note with a jam-packed edition of Enlightened Listening. Spanning over 75 tracks and 6 hours, there's bunches of bangers, albums aplenty and more remixes than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately I'm pressed for time so I'll have to keep the descriptions quick, but here we go!

A couple cohesive and thoughtful albums open as ATTLAS and Spencer Brown show off their incredible aptitude for immersive and beautiful productions. Deep house turns techy as the next four releases (two singles and two EPs) reach epic, expansive poise and power. In a week in which Dawn Chorus got a JUNO nomination, Jacques Greene ups the ante with 12 incredible remixes from the likes of Lunice, Big Miz, CFCF and others. Things turn euphoric as the following four tracks (a pair of each singles and remixes) soar and shine, highlighted by the return of Duck Sauce. With the energy now at its peak courtesy the acid of Elliot Adamson, Machinedrum and Holly's EP pairs perfectly with ingenious and propulsive albums from Squarepusher and Text Chunk & Hood Joplin. Finally as a cherry on top of this musical melange, we get 10 new tracks from Night Bass which are sure to have dance-floors shaking well into the year. Enjoy everything via playlist below and find individual releases linked at the bottom.

ATTLAS - Lavender God

Spencer Brown - Stream Of Consciousness

LUNR - Cold Whispers

Guy J - Day Of Light / Mind Of

Kane - Kane

Buscrates - Lost & Found (ft. Sally Green)

Pittsburgh producer Buscrates is set to join the Bastard Jazz family February 7th with a two track EP, but Monday the label shared its lead single "Lost & Found" with vocals from Sally Green.

Whirling to life, the funky moves of "Lost & Found" are immediately front and center with a bustling bass-line, glitzy glamorous guitar and swirling synth. The combination of all these elements is cripplingly cool, sure to send any dance-floor into a topsy-turvy tango. Its opening half is heaven to fans of polished pop-funk while its second half really lets loose, slapping even harder through the bass and gambolling through its sick synth play. Wildly fun and supremely smooth, you'll want to pick up "Lost & Found" via Bandcamp now as you wait patiently for its dance partner, "Cruise Control" next Friday. FOLLOW BUSCRATES: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump: January 29 (Season 9, Episode 14)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: FUXWITHIT 6 Year Anniversary Party

While I blog on my own here, I also write for my friends over at FUXWITHIT every month or so. When it comes to underground artists making bass, experimental, trap, and more there's no better outlet. They've got a growing list of guest mixes and are always on top things when it comes to premiering new tunes. This Monday marked their 6th anniversary online and Friday they'll be celebrating said occasion at Junction City Music Hall with Bump In The Hump favourites Dropwizz and Lingopolus spinning beside founder ClassyVlassy. Find Facebook event page here.

In fact both Dropwizz and Lingopolus have kindly offered up a couple unreleased/forthcoming tracks for me to spin on Bump In The Hump tonight. However, since I can't post them here I'll tease with a track you'll also hear on tonight's episode, MYTHM's "Close Your Eyes" as premiered last week. Find it below, grab it free here, and catch it in the mix live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber alongside new tracks from So Sus and Memphis., both of whom have dropped killer FUXWITHIT guest mixes.FOLLOW FUXWITHIT: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER WEBSITE

Folamour - Tapes For The PPL #7

Frenchman Folamour has been on quite the rise lately. His Boiler Room set went viral, his edits are being played everywhere and he just scored a spot in my Top 100 Tracks of 2019 with his recent remix of Les Rita Mitsouko. Between keeping himself busy with a solid tour schedule hitting Europe, Australia and North America (including CODA April 9th), he's taken to Soundcloud to share a new 7th edition of his Tapes For The PPL mix series. Always soulful, funky and downright gorgeous, the organic grooves of this mix are to die for. This nearly hour long edition features some exceptionally cool cuts including some killer riffs via JKriv's rework of William & The Young Five "You Turn Me On" which bleeds beautifully into the lush Lucas Arruda track "Tamba Part 1" before breaking us all down to the Dazz Band's deliriously awesome "Magnetized." Without giving more away, I'll stop here and simply say this is a can't miss mix of fabulous funk, sensational soul and divine disco. Leftwing : Kody - Without You (ft. Camden Cox)

London's Leftwing : Kody are keeping their hot streak alive with a scorching start to 2020 following up "I Feel It" with another top notch Toolroom Records release in "Without You." Ditching the piano but staying propulsive, this new Camden Cox-led track is sure to fill floors for months to come. From an entirely instrumental standpoint, it's a big, brilliant and beautiful progressive banger, insistent on upping the energy. However "Without You" wouldn't be half the soaring success if not for Camden Cox's vivacious vocals. Her varied delivery is truly divine, standing both strong and seductive atop the expertly mixed musical bed. The combination is a call to the dance-floor that cannot be discounted. Fall in love with the fabulous flourish that is "Without You" below and get it via Toolroom Records here.FOLLOW LEFTWING : KODY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for January 24

After last week's Enlightened Listening leaned towards experimental cuts through a couple cool albums, this week we're treated to tons of top notch techno alongside some dope DnB and deep house.

Opening the playlist is the brilliance from Four Tet's forthcoming album Sixteen Oceans (due out in March). He's followed by an epic and gorgeous track from Endrik Schroeder, which receives an equally enamoring remix from Marco Passarani. Staying with remixes, Blende graces the groovy NICOLAAS cut "XXO." Closing out these first five tracks is my favourite of the whole playlist and perhaps my favourite new release of the year, a fantastic take on Pointer Sisters classic "Automatic" from Tensnake. Playing perfectly with the already awesome original, Tensnake's contemporary touch is simply sublime.

While we've had A-Trak and Chromeo cross paths a couple times, we've never been treated to a track like the next one. The Brothers Macklovitch are now a real thing and we get our first taste with a deep take on Raphael Saadiq. Another reworked classic follows that as warner case takes us all the way back to 1987 via a cover of Mr. Fingers' "Can You Feel It." Turning towards house, OCULA offers up an inspired five track EP in Summit. After that brief house hiatus, things turn techno with a couple absolutely killer EPs from Kölsch and Hidden Empire, the latter truly taking you on an Odyssee. They are followed by the massive debut EP from HUNTER (Siegel) and his new jet black techno turn.

Turning towards legends, Booka Shade bring a couple new cool moving cuts with their Dear Future Self EP before Paul Woolford dons his Special Request moniker for two equally intoxicating and inspired remixes of the one and only Erol Alkan and his "Spectrum." But now it's time for bangers, so let's head to Night Bass for the dope title track of Jay Robinson's LSD EP. That's followed by the sensational standout Ibranovski remix of "Better" from Valentino Khan's House Party (Remixes) EP. Finally we close with two DnB EPs. First Jake Robertz mesmerizes us, ultimately turning us to stone with Medusa. Said stone is promptly pulverized by three immensely powerful collaborative cuts from René LaVice and Future Cut. Stream everything below, find individual releases linked at the bottom and enjoy!

Four Tet - Baby

Endrik Schroeder - Everyday Of Your Life

NICOLAAS ft. Chela - XXO (Blende Remix)

Tensnake - Automatic

Raphael Saadiq - So Ready (The Brothers Macklovitch Remix)

warner case - Can You Feel It

OCULA - Summit

Kölsch - Shoulder Of Giants / Glypto

Hidden Empire - Odyssee

HUNTER - I Might Forgive I Don't Forget

Booka Shade - Dear Future Self

Erol Alkan - Spectrum (Special Request Mixes)

Jay Robinson - LSD

Valentino Khan & Wuki ft. Roxanna - Better (Ibranovski Remix)

Jake Robertz - Medusa

René LaVice & Future Cut - Nine Strings / Eyes

Horse Meat Disco's 10 Hour Marathon Set @ Oval Space

I don't recall exactly when I first came across Horse Meat Disco, but after just one play of their 2017 Essential Mix (here) I was hooked. Last year I was able to catch Luke Howard and Severino at CODA for what was likely my favourite set of the year, ultimately introducing me to a handful of my favourite tracks of the year. So when I saw that they were going to release a 10 hour marathon set as recorded at Oval Space London on October 5th, I was absolutely ecstatic. It's hard to imagine how many tracks they must've played over such a crazy span or how many I'd just have to get my hands on for repeat rinsing. Dig into the epic set below, and stay tuned for more from the fantastic foursome as they say they've got lots planned for 2020. Here's hoping for a followup to the fabulous "Falling Deep In Love."

Bump In The Hump: January 22 (Season 9, Episode 13)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Broken Future - Broke In Love (The Remixes)

Steady listeners of Bump In The Hump will be familiar with both Broken Future and their label/party series Rollers Only with fellow Kelowna products STUND and Cain. One of a handful of hearty house beats released last year, the duo of Brandon and Jake scored a summer hit with the catchy "Broke In Love." Proving its power, the track has since spawned three new versions from as many western Canadian DJs in Anres and Better Living DJs from Edmonton and Shylow from Revelstoke. Each playing on the irresistible vocals differently, the quality of the original is yet again on full display. Check out each of the new mixes below, get them free via Rollers Only here and catch one of them live in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber or after the fact on Mixcloud.FOLLOW BROKEN FUTURE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Noisia - Decloak

The legendary trio that is Noisia is set to disband at the end of this year, but that doesn't mean they're about to quietly into the night. While Patreons got an early look, today marks the first public taste of a new five track release for the mobile game Armajet. In the middle of the EP, "Decloak" showcases both the immense power and inimitable presence of Noisia through its hostile, hair-raising soundscape.

While I've never played Armajet, I imagine it to be a fast-paced, shoot 'em up style game that takes place in a vast, dark future void. At least that's how Noisia paints the picture. As always the trio succeed in crafting cavernous bass kicks, propulsive snares, roaring drops, and brilliant brooding bass riffs, all amidst a spine-tingling atmosphere. Expect the rest of the rest of the soundtrack to be of the same killer quality, and watch out for its full release Friday. Until then stream below and check out Armajet now.

Bordello A Parigi - Diamonds In The Night

Dutch label Bordello A Parigi launched a new compilation series today featuring French talents The Hacker and Voiron as well as Armonics from Italy and Discobeton from Bulgaria. The first edition of Diamonds In The Night is a fantastic four-pack of synth driven tracks perfect for any nocturnal activity.

Opening with a dark miasma in "Passion," The Hacker lays down a shroud of synths as he leads us into the heart of this EP. A warm and fervent affair, it serves as a strong intro and welcome mat to this evening environment.

Offering up an injection of energy as we become one with the dark of night, Armonic's "Universal Oneness" features a divine dance delivery. It's a giant, growing groover that is sure warm your cockles in spite of its spine-tingling chord selection. Equally as beautiful and alluring while somehow diving even deeper and darker than its predecessor, Discobeton shows off some incredible synth work throughout his offering. "Leave Me Superficial" is a sublime, bouncy and uber cool cut.

Closing out Diamonds In The Night is the acid-touched dream of "Voironia" which instantly evokes an end, evaporating in the dawn sunrise. While each of the aforementioned tracks succeed thanks to sensational synth work, Voiron's play here is perhaps the most moving, setting us adrift in a sea of dreams.

Enlightened Listening for January 17

It's only our third Friday of the year and already we're getting some big releases both building towards and culminating in awesome albums. This week's Enlightened Listening includes the release of two albums we've been looking forward to for a while, Mura Masa's sophomore full-length and Holy Fuck's first in four years. Following the 20 tracks from the aforementioned LPs, the closing third features a handful of hard hitting stuff as well as a brilliant slice from No Mana on mau5trap.

A turn from his divine self-titled debut, Mura Masa's R.Y.C prominently features the guitar and a tighter, angst-driven theme. It's not exactly for everyone, at least as far as his previous productions go, but it's not without musical merit or catchy cuts (see tracks with Clairo, slowthai, Georgia and Ellie Rowsell). Turning more electronic, Holy Fuck's Deleter can boast the same cohesiveness as Mura Masa, and almost as much guitar. It's full of groovy, cool cuts and is an incredible mixture of electronic and organic elements.

A sublime single from No Mana follows the albums and leads us into an electronic escape. Botnek follow up their epic and incredibly powerful "On Planet Z" with an equally dark and deep, rattling cut. Next up are a pair of killer remixes of the legendary DJ Zinc, where Neon Steve delivers a dope get-down and Le Duke a brilliant bass-line. Speaking of brilliant bass-lines that what we get next with the first taste of forthcoming Mad Zoo compilation This Is MAD TOO. Also high in energy, we get a taste of acid from Text Chunk and Hood Joplin as they gear up for their LP Bank Account which is set to drop on the 31st. Oft known for his acid, Djedotronic returns to Boysnoize Records with a scary three-track EP. Finally, we get another unreal single from Apashe ahead of his forthcoming album. Enjoy!

Mura Masa - R.Y.C

Holy Fuck - Deleter

No Mana - Strangers (ft. Jantine)

Botnek - Wassup

DJ Zinc - Super Sharp Shooter (Neon Steve Remix) / Let's Get Together (Le Duke Remix)

Mat Zo - Blessed Be Thy Name

Text Chunk & Hood Joplin - Concrete

Djedjotronic - Boish

Apashe - Uebok (Gotta Run) [ft. Instsamka]

Daktyl - Veins Detached [Live Video]

Last month, one of electronic music's top talents, Daktyl released a magical and moving single called "Veins Detached" with help from Roméo Testa. A testament to Daktyl's exceptional abilities, today he released a live video of him performing the entire track all by himself. Watch below and purchase here.
While the live performance is an absolute marvel, it would be impossible not to consider the quality of the original craftwork. A brilliantly subtle yet exceedingly cool and captivating studio production, the genius of Daktyl and "Veins Detached" is on full display here. I've always been a fan of Daktyl's soundscapes, largely due to their immersive and intimate feel. It is as though he's dropped you onto a blank canvas, proceeding to paint around you in incredible detail. Here he succeeds in making "Veins Detached" both warm and cold, comforting and melancholic; which is of course the mind-blowing, can't-look-away, quality of the studio version, ultimately magnified in the stark nature of this live performance. While the lyrics would suggest expiration and the end of movement, Daktyl gives the track new angelic life through his guitar work, only to leave us wanting more. Unfortunately it doesn't seem as though we'll be seeing Daktyl in person any time soon as he has no current concert dates, however he is planning to release weekly loop videos which you can find on his twitter below.

Jacques Greene ft. Rochelle Jordan - Let Go (Big Miz Remix)

After getting two tastes of the forthcoming deluxe version of Jacques Greene's Dawn Chorus in mid-December, LuckyMe Records has treated us to another mouthwatering morsel. Here Glasgow's Big Miz has remixed Rochelle Jordan led track "Let Go," leveraging the already ambrosial quality of Greene's craftwork into a more typical house affair. The new percussive leads are sublime and spine-tingling, setting the mood for this resplendent remix. Not quite as ethereal as the original, Big Miz is still able to keep much of the bewitching backdrop as he drives "Let Go" forward with the new, fat and rolling bass-line. It succeeds in making its listeners stand up straight, ears perked at each note, while also beckoning them to the dance-floor to move around in Greene's inimitable brand of magic. A true to the original, yet equally inspired and irradiant remix, find it now below and get the full deluxe edition of Dawn Chorus, with remixes from Lunice, Nathan Micay and others, January 31st via LuckyMe.

Selena Gomez - Look At Her Now (Zora Jones Edit)

Fractal Fantasy co-founder and club queen, Zora Jones just shared a potent edit of Selena Gomez's recent sensation "Look At Her Now." Already a captivating and cool pop production via Ian Kirkpatrick, Jones has tapped into the dance-friendly delivery expanding upon and playing with its awesomeness. Maintaining much of the original's allure she chops up Gomez's vocals delivering a cascade of down's, before leaning on Gomez's mmm mmm mmm's to really accentuate the delicious quality of "Look At Her Now." An edit par excellence, Jones has delivered a delightful get-down through her truly brilliant rebuild of Kirkpatrick's original bed (bass riffs, drum fills and overall incredible atmosphere). Throwback Thursday: Tony Rallo & The Midnite Band - Holdin' On (Derek Kaye Rework)

For the first Throwback Thursday post of the year, I've decided to go back to one of my most played tracks from last year. Appearing in a Greg Wilson's Brixton Disco Festival Mix, Derek Kaye's raucous rework of Tony Rallo & The Midnite Band's 1979 "Holdin' On" immediately caught me. Obviously the fat and fantastic bass-line is the driving and commanding force of the original, but here Kaye has put it even more front and center. Riffing wonderfully, it gets better as it goes along, flourishing in this already incredible jazz-funk joint. It's not all about the bass though as the added percussion pushes it to new heights. And speaking of heights, we cannot talk about this track without showing some love to the awesome vocals (see them done live on Top Of The Pops in 1980 here). Sure to get you going, this high powered edit showcases both Derek Kaye's incredible ear and equally adept abilities.
Get "Holdin' On " as part of four track edit EP Kiss U All Over via Juno Records here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: DLMT & Marco Marz - The Streets

Toronto house heads DLMT and Marco Marz have linked up for new banger "The Streets" on the sixth edition of CONFESSION's Alchemy compilation series. Having wildly different 2019s, the two are truly a match made in heaven. Marz essentially stayed in studio all year, not releasing a single record but rather stockpiling them for a big 2020. Meanwhile DLMT made massive waves, scoring several hits including a Billboard #1 with Mahalo collab "So Cold." Here with "The Streets" it seems both are set for a big year kicking it off with a bang(er). Collin Priest - Falling For You

Dutch house producer Collin Priest made his debut on New York City's Nervous Records as their first release of the year. A glowing groove, "Falling For You" soars with angelic ease not just through its vocals but cool, organ-like lead line. It thrives through its soulful feel, whisking you away and causing you to forget that you're listening to a house record instead of being receiving the beautiful blessing. While this is no overwhelming or game-changing cut, it is that very elementary effortlessness and pure and simple roll-out that makes it such a powerful record. Fantastic Voyage - Now That's What I Call Bootlegs: Vol.1

Home to Justin Jay, Benny Bridges and others, Fantastic Voyage has a new remix/edit series. Now That's What I Call Bootlegs plays off the long-running Sony/Universal compilation series and indeed includes bootlegs of tracks that would make the cut for the Now! namesake. This first edition sees the aforementioned Jay and Bridges join forces with Danny Goliger for a trio of club-friendly forces.
Opening the three-part offering is a cheeky 'Ceiling Dion' mix from Bridges and Goliger of Celine's titanic "My Heart Will Go On." Chugging along through piston-powered percussion, this steamy rendition shares the same ambrosial alchemy as the original. It too could come from the same decade as its inspiration, simply being bumped towards a buoyant 90s nightclub.

Diving back a dozen years earlier, the meat in this remix sandwich comes from Justin Jay who brings his Fastboi88 moniker to Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know." Another driving dance cut, we're once again treated to a true-to-the-original take with plenty of playfulness to keep your ears piqued. To say Justin Jay knows how to craft an exceptional edit would be an enormous understatement, so just sit back and let this latest addition to his killer catalog call you to the dance-floor.

Fantastic Voyage and Danny Goliger close out this bootleg beneficence by returning to this millennium for a down and dirty take on Britney Spears' "I'm A Slave 4 U." Like the others above, this one thrives through its new drum bed, bringing an almost toxic tilt to the track. Whereas the original Neptunes production only offers a few really twisted touches in its overall dance-pop/R&B delivery, this new version dives deeper and darker in its new nasty, noxious and indentured energy.

Get all three tracks for the low, low price of 1 USD via Bandcamp here.

Top 100 Tracks Of 2019: 25-1

Conclusion of the list started Monday: from 100-76, which also includes my disclaimer/preamble. The middle sections can be found here: from 75-51 & 50-26. Soundcloud playlist here and Spotify here.

#25: London Elektricity - Final View From The Rooftops (ft. Cydnei B.)
I still remember the first time I ever heard London Elektricity. A friend showed me "All Hell Is Breaking Loose" and I lost my mind. While it took a touch longer for this track to send me into such a tizzy, I was indeed left in awe. Of course it's incredibly crafted, showing off Tony Colman's exceptional aptitude, but more than that it's immersive, building an uber cool and ridiculously detailed world around you. Its magic is like the scene in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince when Dumbledore rebuilds Slughorn's house.

#24: Peggy Gou - Han Pan
Another year, another incredible couple of tracks from Peggy Gou. While it seems most prefer "Starry Night," once again I'm drawn to the b-side. Really either could make the cut but there's just something about "Han Pan" that tickles my fancy a touch more. The driving quality of its groove, the propulsiveness of its percussion and the gorgeous, almost regal, quality of its overall mixture is truly magical. It's got Gou's genius written all over it, and I for one can't wait for next year's batch of brilliance.

#23: Polaris - Kessel Run
My favourite DnB track of the year, this one is utterly wondrous. Its atmosphere is euphoric, dazzling through its diverse and long list of instruments. It roars and purrs, sprints and spins, floats and flails. It has and does it all. Sax solo? It's got that. Disco strings? That too. Its brilliance is simply unavoidable, uplifting and energizing each listener five minutes at a time.

#22: Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now
Easily my favourite pop track of the year. You know it's good when it gets remixes from the likes of Purple Disco Machine, Dom Dolla and others, yet none come remotely close to the captivating and seamless quality of the original. I had a fight with a friend on NYE when he said there must be a ghost producer (he mentioned Calvin Harris), but whether it's Ian Kirkpatrick alone or not it's one of the best productions of the year. There's endless details and it flows ridiculously well, oh and how about that bass line? My god.

#21: Daphni - Sizzling (ft. Paradise)
Dan Snaith is back in a big way. We've got a couple new Caribou tracks already and there's an album right around the corner. However his Daphni output has been the winner. Growing out of a DJ tool, this one is an instant sensation. Its energy is ridiculous, just like its catchiness. Pressing play is like setting the dance-floor on fire causing each dancer to stomp out the flames in glorious unison. A wicked original from Paradise, Snaith has added the perfect electronic touch and wound up with an unstoppable weapon.

#20: Citizen Kain - Indigo
Speaking of weapons, here's the first of two from Tale Of Us' Afterlife Voyage Mix to make this closing section. An obvious and epic banger, everything about this track screams power. The drums and bass absolutely hammer away, while even the brighter, top end percussive bits deliver a crisp metallic crack. The synths are ridiculously sick, made even better by the banging bottom end. The build is beyond big and with it the drop must be even bigger, and Citizen Kain has certainly delivered. It'll leave your head spinning, jaw agape, while you pick up your teeth with a broken arm. Techno doesn't get much better than this.
