Enlightened Listening for July 30

It's the Friday of a long weekend, so without further ado, I present this week's Enlightened Listening. Sorted from light, light-hearted and groovy to heavy, deep and banging, the 16 releases feature countless trusted names, several pre-album singles, and yes, a trio of awesome Anjuna offerings. Finally, I will note that, while not in the playlist, the two tracks I wrote about earlier this week, "Don't Tread On Else Matters" and "Only One," are just as highly recommended as the rest of these fine productions. Big Wild - City Of Sound (Alex Metric Remix)

Big Wild have teased their forthcoming four track Superdream remix package with the legendary Alex Metric's take on "City Of Sound." The always in demand Metric has once again delivered a stunning seven minute slice of dance delirium.

Following in the same steps as his recent Parcels, more classic Foals remixes and throwback Open Your Eyes (Remixes & Productions) album, this latest shows off diligent dynamics, brilliant bass, incredibly catchy craft-work and magnificent movement. In fact, there's at least a couple bits in "City Of Sound" that would suggest that it is a spiritual relative to both his massive original "Open Your Eyes" with Steve Angello and the aforementioned "Mountain At My Gates" remix. The rebuilds (or initial build as it were in "Open Your Eyes") deliver the same kind of sweep you off your feet movement and ease into ecstasy, as well as the same kind of stabbing synths.

That said, it would be unfair to characterize "City Of Sound" as a simple cookie cutter track, but should instead be considered as a part of the awesome evolution of output that makes Alex Metric one of the world's most trusted and well respected producers. As a fan, it delivers every element that I've come to expect from the master and in essence plays out like a fresh mix of some of my favourite tracks from his killer catalog. Another Sky - The Cracks

As often seems to be the case as the weather gets warmer, my attention slowly turns from pure electronic productions to more typical bands. Most recently that band has been Parcels, but another group have just appeared on my radar courtesy Annie Mac, who just gave the first play to South London outfit Another Sky and their new single "The Cracks."

It took no time at all for me to fall for this building brilliance and beauty, but was I just lapping up all Annie had to offer, or are Another Sky indeed a band for me? Until this first play I had never heard of this foursome, but a quick Google search gave me reason to jump aboard their bandwagon as the first article (Dork) that appeared had quoted vocalist Catrin as saying "The band formed out of a mutual obsession with a Talk Talk album." Also obsessed with Talk Talk myself, it's easy to hear Mark Hollis' imprint in their albeit minimal catalog. However, unless you're Greta Van Fleet you likely receive inspiration from more than one source, as is the case here with "The Cracks."

A reference to Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" from 1992 album The Future, the vocal content does indeed burst forth as light beaming over the horizon, around your curtain and into your eyes. It is this energizing and uplifting, yet sometimes chaotic, power that we're witnessing as spring pushes against winter's cold, crushing grip. The melange of instruments and verily so Catrin's vociferous vocals work in fantastic harmony, combining to build a massive structure of striking euphoria. It is hard not to be compelled to spin in ecstasy by the shuffling drums and plucking strings as though under the spell of Another Sky. And while I would say autonomy is incredibly important, giving into "The Cracks" can be incredibly edifying.
