Enlightened Listening for February 26

We've reached the final Friday of this perfectly balanced February, and that means it's time for Enlightened Listening. This week's playlist is headlined by two tremendous albums from John Tejada and Dense & Pika; the former a lighter, more explorative affair, while the latter thrives through its impenetrable sound design. There's a trio of remixes from KAYTRANADA, KUU and Claptone, who takes on a personal favourite from the 80s in Trans-X's "Living On Video." Other favourites appear as AkaMatisse makes good with his debut EP, Prospa amaze with their Rave Science Vol. 1, and Matroda goes for monumental grooves with his Insomniac offering. Enlightened Listening for October 16

Happy Friday everyone! We've got a fabulous set of new releases for this week's Enlightened Listening. It features two full-length projects we've been building towards in the lush L.A. LP from Tensnake and CRi's captivating Anjunadeep offering Juvenile. There's also a number of personal favourites (TSHA, Eli Escobar, LeBaron James and Kardano), headlined by the triumphant return of Stephen Walking (who goes disco). Another unlikely disco turn comes from Matroda, while that genre gets another dose of new Duck Sauce. Other big names include Four Tet, BRONSON, No Mana and Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, who are gearing up for a new album which is set to drop on November 20th. Finally, we get fierce in the final two releases as Somna & LTN turn up the heat before Barbosa's overwrought techno in EMERCIVE debut (ra). Enlightened Listening for November 22

This week's edition of Enlightened Listening hits the epic standard once again. It's full of legendary names and extended cuts. With that in mind I'll aim to keep the descriptions short so you can just get right into the music which ranges from deep and progressive house to out and out bangers, especially heavy on the DnB. Skip ahead if to the playlist if you like or catch highlights in the following paragraph.

Ben Böhmer leads it off with a brilliant album, which is then followed by perhaps my favourite All Day I Dream EP, which is made up of four fantastic fable-like tracks from Volen Sentir. Friendly Fires bring in a couple brilliant remixes as well as a couple album extras in Offline, while Goom Gum take on a Depeche Mode classic. Joy Orbison and Overmono unleash brilliant b-side "Still Moving," which leads us into a bunch of banging bass tracks starting with a sensational Sable Valley pairing. Mat Zo and Doctor P deliver a couple genius cuts, reminding us of their revered status throughout the scene. However it is the future in Kryojen and WE ARE FURY, who cap the playlist with sensational soundscapes and a dark dystopian future. Enjoy all that and more below, and have a great weekend!

Enlightened Listening for May 24

This week's Enlightened Listening features several superb EPs, a couple exceptional remixes and a whole heap of fire. We start with Qrion and Spencer Brown linking up for a beautiful EP on Anjunadeep, before upping the energy and groove with Detroit Swindle's sense-tingling Rhythm Girl Swing. Next up is Prins Thomas who puts his space age magic touch on Cooper Saver's "Star System." Following that are three equally awesome EPs, all of the darker, more banging house variety. Hotfire leans towards the G-house side especially with "Criminal," and while Matroda very much follows suit, his 4 tracks bring a bigger, more ominous magnitude, best noted in "Another Day." Rounding out this thunderous trio, Magnificence electrifies with each of the first three tracks doling out diabolic drums and drops, while the final "Encore" offers up an expansive, quieting denouement. Jumping back into explosive energy Buku goes ballistic with absolutely no remorse. Changing gears with the tempo and flipping Lemaitre on their head, Coucheron whips up a wildly twisted trap banger. Finally, Duke & Jones team up with Lucchii for the jaw dropping "Deception," equally likely to make your backbone slide or break your neck. Enlightened Listening for March 23

A day later than usual, but with the futuristic leanings of so many of the releases in this edition of Enlightened Listening, you could say it's actually early. Of course everyone is talking about Flume's fantastic return, but equally brilliant and epic is Shlohmo's The End. Taking a different approach to the future, Henry Saiz plays with his synths in mystifying fashion for Digital Mirages Vol. 1. After that comes a trio of techno releases including the utterly intoxicating "Puppets" from Patrice Bäumel, Denis Horvat's Miracle Of The Rose EP from which "Noise" made waves in Tale Of Us' Afterlife Voyage 013 mix, and a stunning collab between Kölsch and Sasha. House then follows with Jack Back dropping a dope Defected release and Matroda's mean The RED Tape - Side A EP. Finally, the enigmatic and always adventurous Mr. Oizo offers up 4 more pieces of mind-fuckery, concluding in the auspicious "Nuque." One of the biggest, most earworm worthy productions of the year just got kicked up a couple notches by Matroda. Absolutely menacing in its metallic, space age austerity, this take on Adam Beyer and Bart Skils "Your Mind" will leave you searching for your sanity and stability alike, as all solid ground is stripped from beneath your feet. Rocky in Matroda's new heavy machinery style delivery, the Drumcode release has become an interstellar mining mission. Think Armageddon, just instead of a drill it's a jackhammer; and yes, it's still directed by Michael Bay as Matroda's laced this production with more TNT than a Wile E. Coyote sketch. That said "Your Mind" isn't all shock and awe, it's an expertly crafted progression and interplay between the bass-line, onslaught of effects and alien atmosphere, all wrapped around hypnotizing vocals. Matroda has gone mental with this remix, and it will no doubt do all kinds of damage on the dance-floor. Flux Pavilion - Bass Cannon (Matroda Remix)

The mere mention of "Bass Cannon" ought to get your juices flowing. Flux Pavilion's 2011 production remains one of the most revered bass tracks of any kind. That's why it works so well as the first edition of Matroda's Trilogy Of Bass. Of course he's not the first to try his hand at remixing the prolific production, but his take is a tremendous, booming success. He's taken the fire five minute dubstep deathstar and flipped it into a stomping bass house blitzkrieg. The bass remains as the primary element, and in this new format continues to crack off like crazy, while being whipped up with more consistent regularity as is demanded in house. But it's not just bass on bass on bass (because bass boosted mixes aren't the be all and end all). The original's success comes in large part thanks to the tickling tones and their play in and around the bass. They are the necessary yang to the yin of the dark low end. And Matroda's done a masterful job of repackaging and re-purposing them in this new "Bass Cannon" kick.
