Enlightened Listening for March 19
Another Friday means it's time for another Enlightened Listening. This week's edition clocks in at just under four hours, running 55 tracks deep. Centred around albums from Dezza and OVERWERK, there's a trio of utterly infectious cuts from Jacques Greene, Todd Edwards and Folamour, as well as BIJOU's banging return to Night Bass (my favourite EP there in many months). Staying with the heavy stuff, the final four releases in the playlist, while diverse, each overflow with energy and bristle with bass. Returning to the top, the playlist opens with three-way collab "Ride Or Die," which I can almost guarantee will appear across year-end best-of lists. Boys Noize and Chily Gonzales is a potent pairing in itself, while Kelsey Lu's vocals are simply sublime. Finally, filling in the gaps are a fistful of remixes, including an immersive epic from Volen Sentir, and a trio of EPs from EMBRZ, HNTR and Afterlife. Enlightened Listening for December 18
In what will likely be the year's last edition of Enlightened Listening, we get one hell of a sendoff. Once again keeping things short and sweet, I simply recommend digging into each of these 16 releases. However, there are a handful of records that require just a little more love.
Atop a divine Danny L Harle take on The Corrs classic, Caroline Polachek indeed leaves me "Breathless." Turning the clock back even further, Derrick Carter, Dimitri From Paris, Seth Troxler, and Cerrone all put their touch on Fine Young Cannibals. Later, Lamorn delivers an absolutely genius remix of "Bridged By A Lightwave." LuckyMe and PC Music feature as the final two standouts with A. G. Cook remixes appearing on both; the former, a deluxe edition of Baauer's PLANET'S MAD, and the latter, an epic reimagining of Planet 1999's "Party."

Enlightened Listening for June 19
It's only been two weeks since the last Bandcamp day but they've gone bimonthly in June, donating their share of profits on this Juneteenth to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Of course that means this edition of Enlightened Listening is once again hosted on Bandcamp. This week you'll find Baauer's sensational sophomore album PLANET'S MAD, a trio of EPs, a couple free downloads and a 10 artist charitable collaboration. Lost Desert - Lost Desert & Friends
As the temperatures continue to rise, I can't think of a better catalog to enjoy in the shade with a cold drink. A touch heavier than most of the previous ADID releases, but the slow burning brilliance of it remains. Personal favourite: "That Moment And You."
Moon Boots - Pure Moons Vol. 1
More easy flowing deep house/disco/dance cuts. Electronic escapism. Personal favourite: "Sundae."
Gregory Porter - 1960 What? (Ahmed Sirour Remix)
Incredible tribute mix made with a number of classic samples as well as a chant from this year's BLM march in Seattle. The passion is palpable and the energy infectious. My favourite release of the day.
DAVIE - Testify
Another impassioned and soulful affair. Instantly catchy. Sure to have you tapping your toes and clapping/snapping along. Expect big things from DAVIE and Defected.
Ticklish - The Way I Love You
Beautifully crafted, especially as the vocals and strings sew it all together. Top notch Ticklish.
Juelz - Renegade
How seven producers managed to make a singular track so seamless is a stunning feat. It's a wicked ride that feels like a megamix of all things Sable Valley. Watch out for the reprise in the last minute.
Baauer - PLANET'S MAD
An album/project like no other. Short of literally making a new planet, Baauer has done it all. It comes with its own full length video (here) and even more immersive content on Spotify (see here). Further proof that Baauer is in a league of his own. Personal favourites: "PIZZAWALA," "AETHER" & "HOME."
Masayoshi Iimori - Wonky Rave
The title says it all. Iimori offers up a trio of truly turnt tracks, each more brain-battering than the last. Explosive energy and gut-wrenching grit amidst some supremely satisfying rave sounds. Personal favourite: "Wonky Rave."
Jesse Zimmerman - Gamma
Fitting final track as we enter into the void. Dark synthwave affair clearly inspired by the cyberpunk movies Zimmerman was watching when this was written.

Enlightened Listening for May 8
Somna - Beside You
I lost my mind when I heard the album minimix on Soundcloud, a great indication of the breadth of the 14 track epic. I recently re-listened to Cosmic Gate's Essential Mix (one of my all-time favourites) and this shares a lot of similarities. My kind of trance.
Oliver Heldens & MOGUAI - Cucumba (Ilan Bluestone Remix)
Another one that reminds me of the Cosmic Gate Essential Mix. Bluestone's brilliance is all over this. The percussion is killer and it works wonders with the synths and anticipatory atmosphere.
John Dahlbäck - Chased
Seems I'm really on the house/trance blend because here we go again. Dahlbäck delivers a big one here, but I just wish it were the extended mix. Really getting the urge to rave IN A CLUB thanks to this.
DubVision - Take My Mind
Absolutely love the wobbly/trippy/glitchiness of this. And while the flurries are obviously the leading lady as it were, the way it catches its stride with the kick is what makes "Take My Mind" so intoxicating.
Lili Caseley - C'est La Ve (Le Matin Remix)
While it doesn't say it in its title, this is a Louis La Roche remix. The soft and slow start quickly makes room for a wicked upbeat kick. A little more jacking than we usually get from LLR, but catchy nonetheless.
Dombresky & Boston Bun - Stronger (Tensnake Remix)
Tensnake stays hot here as he brings his polished groove to the already awesome collab. Special mention needs to be made of both the bumping bassline and sensational string sweeps.
Folamour - I Miss Having Someone To Talk To (ft. Liv East)
Folamour never misses. The organic quality of this one is just so gorgeous and easy to enjoy. Both the brass and the drums are divine.
HERO - CRY BABY (Matthew Law Remix)
It really says something when all the remixes of HERO are immaculate. The Lo Stesso remix last week was really chill and this one is gorgeous and groovy. Love the little cellphone notification/beep sfx.
Jessie Ware - Save A Kiss
My favourite of Jessie's latest run of singles. Sublime strings and brilliant electronic build, both the instrumental and Jessie are as awesome as ever.
Joe Goddard & Hayden Thorpe - Unknown Song
I think this may be my favourite Joe Goddard since Electric Lines. There's just something about the way he works with and around Hayden Thorpe's vocals. It's got a brilliant bounce and dope designs throughout.
Booka Shade - Dear Future Self
Each single has been killer and the complete version is no different. Epic and strong, each of the tracks sets a scene like only Booka Shade can. Massive interstellar magnitude.
Ejeca - Everglade
Following "Ekstac" is a tough task, but this EP is up to it. Awesome moving cuts throughout with the same kind of captivating quality as "Ekstac." Watch out for the fantastic use of vocals.
Aera - Prana
Upon first listen to Prana, I flipped between gasps and yelps as each track revealed itself. The toplines are stunning throughout and their subtleties just so heartening. It's going to be interesting to see how this one plays through the year and whether I'll be pumping all four tracks as I suspect I will.
Cozway - Expedition
The lead single is simply stunning, likely Cozway's best work. Its counterparts continue this trend of showcasing the rising star's sound. Think of him as both Canada and trap's Rebūke.
Baauer - AETHER
The build to the trap legend's album Planet's Mad continues and while two rainforest flavoured tunes appeared this week, I'm far more a fan of the DnB base of "AETHER." It has an edge of madness and mayhem, but Baauer's brilliance keeps it all tight and harmonious.
DJ Zinc - Through It All (ft. Maverick Sabre)
Another legend to wrap things up. Beautiful, uplifting and highly musical DnB with heartening vocals to boot.

Baauer - GoGo! (Awoltalk Remix)
Where the original has a bit of a sneaky, back loaded beat, this new version absolutely explodes. And it's not just a single boom, there's several aftershocks in a kind of raging ripple effect. Even the underlying bass, that occurs throughout, is amplified in its intensity. This is really the powder-keg at the core of Awoltalk's rework; he's transformed the almost analytical original into a full on street fight. It's as if the original is Ryu and Awoltalk's turn is Blanka. There's just an added electricity that I cannot get enough of. Richfellow - Rouse
"Rouse" starts subtle before proceeding to blasts your ears with the sound of air rushing out of a balloon as Babini stretches and plays it like an instrument. To be clear I do not know what that sound is or how he's made it, but my god is it crisp, original and all kinds of awesome. Whatever it is, it is pure magic, as we've come to expect from the "Magical Music Outfit." There have only been two times in my life when I can say I've been as awestruck with a track as I have been with "Rouse" - 1: Baauer's "Dum Dum" and 2: RL Grime's "Core." Quite the comparison I know, but "Rouse" truly is special, and in true Jadū Dala form they've delivered this delirium inducing track free. Get it via Hive, here. L D R U feat. Paige IV - Keeping Score (The Remixes)
Cut Snake was the first to have their remix uploaded to L D R U's soundcloud and serves an an excellent introduction to the first class collection of remixes. It succeeds in transforming the original into a rave-worthy, bouncy house classic; unmistakably awesome and uplifting, an extraordinary lead mix.
The following mix, from Luca Lush, plays the perfect foil, maintaining its piano power while moving from the rave to the after party. Despite Luca Lush's proclivity to produce more intense, fast moving and in your face remixes, this one could easily fly under the radar were it not for its breathtaking beauty. Leaning heavily on Paige's vocals, Luca Lush's production lives up to his name providing a plush pillow on which to rest your head.
But you won't be sleeping long, as the remix package roars into the riotous revision from Boxinbox & Lionsize. The turnt electro drop smashes behind booming bass drums and stabbing synths. While this mix boasts the most stereotypical EDM stylings, it is incredibly infectious, invoking heart palpitations and the feels of a Congorock track of yore.
Next up is The Meeting Tree's mix with an abundance of smart sound designed atmosphere and pernicious percussion. Ringing bells and a trap get down give this version the feel of an early Baauer production. Guaranteed to get those thots twerking on the floor, I anticipate hearing this mix in some upcoming TWRK or TWONK Team mixtapes.
The penultimate mix comes from Terace, whose version strikes me as the hardest quantify. Seemingly taking elements of multiple genres, Terace manipulates and plays with Paige's vocals while subverting any expectations of what the track ought to sound like. The magic of this mix is the driving subwoofing bass that rifles the remix ever forward.
Finally, the mix that drew me to this package in the first place, the inimitable Oski. Perhaps best suited to alter the original, Oski seems to use the same air as L D R U, flipping "Keeping Score" in an almost VIP or 2.0 fashion. Whether it's the awesome intro "aw yeah, is that Oski?" the awesome RL Grime-esque honking drop, the undeniable atmosphere or the genius tuned percussion, everything about Oski's mix is an absolute win.
Do not sleep on this remix package. There's something for everyone and quite simply succeeds in creating six new and terrific tracks.

SVANI - Bootleg Pack
Norway's SVANI recently broke the quadruple digit followers mark on her soundcloud and has graced us all with a five track bootleg pack for our listening and DJing pleasures.
The above Busta Rhymes "Dangerous" vocal edit of her original "YAASSS," leads the mashup bootleg package, with it's undeniable club capabilities. Upon first listening, SVANI immediately evoked SOPHIE, and in some perfect, almost eerie, realization of desires SVANI also included a mashup of SOPHIE's club smasher "MSMSMSM," combined with Sugur Shane's vocals. The combinations SVANI creates are ridiculously lethal and could easily appear in a Baauer, Hudson Mohawke or RL Grime set. Add into the mix a nasty Missy Elliott/Mapalma mashup, Njena Reddd Foxxx "Jackie Brown" on top of Los Timbres' "Flute" and soul crushing edit of Kelela's "Rewind." Best Free Xmas MP3s
Arriving today on soundcloud was this wonderful rework of Disclosure and Lorde's "Magnets" from rising star, Dom Dias. It's a really nice peeled back version that glides out of your speakers; it's a little less bass heavy than the previous tracks we've heard from Dom, but the production value is most certainly on par. The ebb and flow of the synths are greatly complimented by a bouncy and fluttering bass drop; the atmospheric sounds of the loons and gusts of wind evoke a live performance at your cottage. The real magic and brilliance lies in the superb drum 'pattern,' which is in scare-quotes because after listening multiple times, I'm still not sure I can pick up on it but damn it's sounds good.

Baauer w/ Internet Daughter B2B Eytan Tobin
Upon arriving I was greeted by two Heineken girls giving away plastic light-up wristbands; nice enough, who doesn't like free swag? Before I could even get to the bar I noticed my wristband went dark, and yes it had already died, oh well I'm not one for glow sticks or flashing lights anyway. Back at the bar, I asked for my usual tall can of Coors Banquet, to which the bartender replied "It's a Heineken night," okay, I'll get a tall can of that, "Nope." Well, do you have any tall cans? "Nope." Well, what DO you have? "Only Heineken." Fine I guess I'll have one. "$8, please." Now, the reason I always get tall cans is two fold, one, it's the best bang for your buck, and two, I have to go back to the bar less often. These kinds of corporate sponsored buyouts have to stop, there's no way it gets the company any good will, I'd think it's exactly the opposite. Sure if you usually drink Heineken you're happy but for everyone else who is now forced to drink it, I'd imagine they'd be at best mildly perturbed and at worst totally boycott Heineken. I know I'm not happy about it and certainly won't be rushing to get a Heineken again. People want and deserve choices, monopolies are never alright, even the board game is of questionable merit.

New Grandtheft Mix For Diplo & Friends
Last night while in line waiting to get into The Hoxton to see Cyril Hahn, I was scrolling through twitter and saw this weird tweet. Playing IDs (or unnamed work in progress tracks) isn't necessarily odd, but this one struck me, mostly because of the youtube video it's linked to, being an only 42 second clip.

But then I realized it wasn't from just any old BBC show, it was from Grandtheft's mix for Diplo & Friends. I'm a big fan of the show, both because of the wide range of upcoming talents that deliver monster mixes but also the incredible number of brand new and unreleased content those talents drop. Grandtheft's mixes are never to be slept on as he always comes through with brilliance, this one certainly does that, but more excitingly there is a crazy number of new and unreleased tracks from Keys N Krates, Autoerotique and Hunter Siegel, and of course a significant number of exclusives from Grandtheft himself. Each Monday I spend hours scouring the internet for all kinds of different electronic music. And each Monday I'll be posting a little mix of less than 30 minutes for your listening pleasure. It will always contain a huge variety of electronic music mixed and mashed up to varying degrees. The music is always first and foremost while DJing and mixing skills are meant to take a back seat. It will also include some brand new stuff but also some forgotten gems and whatever it was that had entered my consciousness. Relive Mad Decent Block Party (Review)
As you ought to now know I have finished my life as host of Enlightenment For Your Ears, on CFBU 103.7 FM, and it couldn't have come at a better time. This being the first Friday following my massive grand finale show, I was allowed the freedom to attend one of the most highly anticipated shows in Toronto EDM history, the second annual Mad Decent Block Party. I can honestly say that it was entirely excellent despite what many would call a sub par line-up (especially when compared to other MDBPs around North America) as a result of the date coinciding with the biggest EDM festival the world has to offer, Tomorrowland happening simultaneously in Belgium. This for me was the reason we didn't get the likes of Dillon Francis, Baauer, Flosstradamus and many other brilliant Mad Decent members, again despite fact this I would called the 2013 Toronto version of the MDBP a huge success. With this post it is my intention to showcase the great local and Canadian talents that were present, as well as allow those of you who unfortunately missed out on this great event, to enjoy much of the music that was played and which has become ear-worms for myself. In the next paragraphs I will make my way though the lineup of those played and highlight tracks that I feel deserve a second look. Unfortunately, for those who are interested in Riff Raff and El Dusty, I have nothing substantive to say as I was not as interested in these acts and cannot accurately comment as to what they performed. Let us now dive into the first act I was mentally present and prepared for.

THUGLI:
If you are a fan of EFYE you will immediately recognize this duo as local Torontonians Pat Drastik and Tom Wrecks. I am outwardly a huge fan and supporter of these two and despite being essentially the first act of the day put on an amazing set, which showcased a number of their own productions as well as some brilliant scratching skills. Many kudos to them for kicking off the day and preparing us for the massiveness to come. Below is a list of tracks (and links so you can listen to what) I can recall from their set:

A TRIBE CALLED RED:
Fans of EFYE may not be familiar with this brilliant trio hailing from Ottawa, made up of DJ NDN, DJ Shub and Bear Witness. I too had only heard of this group without having heard their music, and boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. These three as ATCR decribe their sound as Powwow-Step, which if you are a fan of EFYE you might want to imagine Dillon Francis with elements of First Nations music, particularly vocal chanting and drumming. Their music would work perfectly at a bonfire rave; it is perfect to lose yourself to music. I was so impressed with these three, as perhaps I ought to be as a result of there being three member allowing for more scratching, crowd involvement and more all around quality mixing and DJing. Not only was this set mind blowing for all of the thousand or so that were there early enough, but for someone of my specific age and generation, ATCR included some easter eggs from both their and my childhood. Absolutely brilliant mixing and sampling of the Sesame Street theme as well as the Reading Rainbow (as seen similarly HERE when they played in Detroit earlier this year). Once again below find those tracks I can clearly recall:

GRANDTHEFT:
Again fans of EFYE will be very familiar with this great local Torontonian talent who rounded out three Canadian artists in a row, and played one of the greatest sets I have ever witnessed and perhaps one of the greatest sets Toronto has ever seen; I simply cannot say enough positive about this talent, his showmanship and producer-ship. I am so proud to be living in the same city and this genius and am so lucky to be alive at a time when he has begun his rise into worldwide stardom (deservedly so). If you follow music at all I'm sure you are aware of the twerking phenomenon happening throughout North America headed by the likes of Diplo, the don of Mad Decent, and championed by worldwide idol Miley Cyrus (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C). Grandtheft has intelligently latched his star to the likes of the twerk and more specifically Miley's twerking in his most recent collaboration with Skratch Bastid entitled Miley; he even had someone dressed in a bunny suit, clearly referencing Miley first twerking video (see exhibit A above). Yet again it is time to make reference to the tracks he played out (at least to my recollection):
- He opened the set with his Not In Love (Edit) mixed into Get Based mixed into New Slaves (DJ Snake Remix)
- His aforementioned collab Miley mixed into a forthcoming collab with Hedspin
- All Bird Everything
- A forthcoming collab with Diplo mixed into Higher mixed into Higher Ground (Lazee Remix)
- Simon Says (ETC!ETC! & Brillz Bootleg) mixed into WHO mixed into his remix of Treat Me Right mixed into his collab remix with Major Lazer The Fog
- Bugatti (Heroes X Villains Remix)

This Torontonian duo followed Riff Raff and while I generally find their dubstep sound almost offensive to the ears I was again pleasantly surprised come the end of their set. To the best of my knowledge their set started with nearly all dubstep and this threw me off as for the most part MDBP was almost entirely a trap show. By the end of their set they had successful changed my cynical mind through featuring some great Canadian classics as well as some of their own originals from their past. Here we go again:

MAJOR LAZER:
The much anticipated main event of the evening was thoroughly enjoyable from a musical standpoint although I must admit I was quite disappointed in the entirely absent DJing. It seemed as though each and every song was either cut short or spun back. The set was one of the most choppy set I've ever witnessed and were it not the case that I love nearly every Major Lazer track I would have been entirely disappointed. I understand that Diplo, Jillonaire & Walshy Fire were the headlining act for each stop of the tour (which would be quite tedious) and that they were missing out on Tomorrowland to play a much smaller set in Toronto, I can rationalize why they merely wanted to have fun and get the crowd involved, yet I feel that we ought to have had a better chance to hear some of their tracks played out in their entirety and as a DJ I would have really appreciated witnessing some true DJing skills. Nonetheless here is what I heard:
- Rihanna Stay (Major Lazer Remix) mixed into Mashup The Dance
- The Lion mixed into Differentology (Major Lazer Remix) mixed into a forthcoming Major Lazer RDX track
- Original Don (Luminox Remix) vs (Flosstradamus Remix) mixed into Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix) which was cut at the drop in favour of Tom Ford (D78 Remix)
- Get Free to Rum & Redbull
- Get Busy mixed into Murder She Wrote mixed into Bubble Butt
- Express Yourself mixed into Jump Around mixed into Bumaye mixed into Pon De Floor
- Cannonball (Carnage & Victor Niglio Remix)

In conclusion I am very happy with the money spent in comparison to the previous event (Digital Dreams) and the fact that I was able to catch nearly the entire Block Party, although it wasn't much of a Block Party being that it was situated directly between the GO tracks and the Gardiner, yet that didn't end up being much of a deterrent. The venue was actually quite good and I thoroughly enjoyed not being surrounded by alcohol drinkers thus able to stay more clean and not sticky although I cannot say the same for my feet which ended up looking more like hooves than anything else by the end of the night; those who wore shoes didn't have this problem so I guess I only have myself to blame. Finally I'd grade this version of the Mad Decent Block Party as better than decent, it gets a solid A in my books with many pleasant surprises, all in all a great time!
