Enlightened Listening for July 20

After nearly losing it all this afternoon (my iTunes crashed and I thought I had lost all of my metadata), new music has arrived and saved the day (don't worry my iTunes is alive and well!). I'm going to have to keep things short and sweet as I'm running out of time, so no descriptions, just a playlist of new music ranging from funk to house and trap to techno/club/bass. There's a couple free downloads so look out for those asterisks below, and enjoy some killer stuff from big and trusted names like Lane 8 and Gorgon City, and remixes of Nick Catchdubs, ZHU x Tame Impala, and RL Grime. ENJOY!

Night Tempo - Bay City Groove (ft. Super Brass)

Pigbag - Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag (A Pied Piper Mix)

Lane 8 - The Disappearance of Colonel Mustard

Gorgon City - Hear That (ft. D Double E)

Botnek - Work That (Body)

Nick Catchdubs ft. Mattie Safer (ZOI Remix)

ZHU x Tame Impala - My Life (Just A Gent Remix)*

RL Grime ft. Boys Noize - Pressure (Divinite Remix)*

GRRL - Nightclub

Maesu - White Peach (Koyö Remix)

Fresh from Hegemon comes a remix from New Caledonian, Koyö who's put his own touch on Los Angeleno, Maesu's "White Peach," and you can now pick it up for free via Artist Intelligence Agency.Immediately identifiable as a Hegemon track with it's incomparably produced percussion sounds, I could be easily convinced that this is a Daktyl track, which should say a lot about its quality. Even though it was posted 20 minutes ago (as I write this), it feels even newer than that as though it's been ripped from a distant future. I'm not sure how I would describe the track, whether more as future bass or as some kind of hybrid trap, but whatever the case it's incredibly well produced. The chiming bells and clicking percussion set the mood, alongside the ever growing ambiance and blasting bass of the drops, however the key to "White Peach" is the combination of vocal manipulations and wavering warm synths. When all of these excellent elements are added together the quality of Koyö's production shines its brightest. This really is Hegemon at its best, and with artists like Just A Gent, Daktyl, GRMM, Obeson and TroyBoi being associated with the label, that's saying a lot. I for one cannot wait to hear what Koyö does next.

Just A Gent - Heavy As A Heartbreak (Lookas x SMLE Remix)

Lookas and SMLE just dropped future bass/dubstep remix of Just A Gent's "Heavy As A Heartbreak."
Supporting the despondent lyrics of the original, Lookas and SMLE start their mix with devastatingly downtrodden chords and anguishing atmosphere. Strings and bells ring out in a hollow existence, slowly gaining intensity and drive, hitting the first muted drop, accentuated by the greatly manipulated and gaunt feeling vocal "Heavy as a heartbreak." Where the first drop is far more subtle and restrained, the second hits hard with wobbling and throbbing dubstep bass. The disparity between drops and overarching movement of the track is the magic behind this production; phenomenal storytelling highlighting the extraordinary vocals. Perhaps best seen in the juxtaposing drops, the first still seems to maintain some hopefulness and humanity, which has all but disappeared in the anger and devastation endemic in the dubstep drop; screaming ever so painfully at an uncaring world. A tremendously beautiful depiction of the grieving inherent in the human condition, "Heavy As A Heartbreak" can now be streamed both on soundcloud and Spotify.
