Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Dreams Festival

Another week, another invasion of artists to the 6ix. This weekend marks another edition of the Dreams Festival, which has changed names (previously Digital Dreams) and weekends (last year July 7th/8th and previously Canada Day long weekend). That said the lineup is always stacked with some of the biggest names in the game and this year is no different. As we do on Bump In The Hump we'll be showcasing some of those names, of course with special focus on those Canadians in the mix. We'll hear tracks from Ryan Shepherd, B.Traits, Robotaki, and more. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Keys N Krates - Flute Loop ft. Ouici

It's a new year, and the best part of that is the prospect of new music. We already knew Keys N Krates were working on their followup to Midnite Mass, and now we have another insight into their direction. After "Glitter" which took a more tempered, groove driven approach, it seems like they're back to their old trap tricks. Once again working with fellow Torontonian Ouici, "Flute Loop" is exactly the kind of fun, anthemic fire we've come to expect from the always entertaining and energetic trio. Trap arms, stanky legs and all kinds of chaos come from this dopest of drops, which we'll surely find filling dancefloors all over the place as it's available for free download. Top 100 Tracks of 2017: 100-76

Starting today, through Friday, I'll be revealing my list of the "Top 100 Tracks of 2017." The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it important to preface this kind of list with some insight into its creation and the reasoning behind it. While I spent a lot of time seriously pouring through this year of music, this is not really a serious endeavour. It is merely my fun way of further sharing the tracks and artists that made my year better. The rankings may not be scientific or even fair, rather they are simply a reflection on how strongly I felt these tracks and how much praise I felt they deserved.

As with last years list (starting here), you'll see that I included multiple tracks from my favourite artists. You'll also notice that the thread of disco/funk runs strongly throughout, as it is without question where I found myself going most this year. I did however try to touch on a variety of genres, while of course sticking to what I really like and felt warranted inclusion in such a list. Again mirroring last year, you'll find a relatively low amount of 'club' music, certainly in comparison to the amount of time I spent within them. But that's just me, I tend to listen to and enjoy so called 'headphone' music as much as big, banging, sub-woofer throbbing, beats. That being said plenty of this list would pulverize a club and I'd love to hear any of these tracks on a big system.

Finally, I will once again say that this is by no means an exhaustive list; there are without a doubt exceptional tunes that somehow failed to make the cut. However, onward and, in this case, downward, from tracks 100 to 76 we go. See the soundcloud playlist here and at the bottom of the page.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: RYME & Cosella - You Wanna

After a week off, Bump In The Hump is back with its new seventh season, and what better way to celebrate than with new music from friends of the show RYME and Cosella. The BADLQQK family had some celebrating of their own with the three track RYME & Friends EP being their 20th release. Plus they're set to do a mini-tour, playing Datcha in Montreal Oct 12th and Rum Runners in London Oct 14th, both with the legendary Don Rimini. "You Wanna" finally sees RYME and Cosella working together on the same track, having only remixed each other previously, and all I can say is how much I hope they get back in the studio soon as this absolutely bangs. If BADLQQK's motto is "Make Club Music Great Again" it sure seems to be in good hands. Stream the track below and the whole EP here.With this newseason of Bump In The Hump, we've expanded to two hours, meaning double the dancing, including a cheeky mix between this and another track, keyword being dancing. The extended length also means more room for music of all kinds. There's trance, future bass, disco, funk, house, garage, DnB, trap, hybrid, electro and just straight up fire. There's so much to tease but I'll leave it at that, because it's really just about the music and not the hype. Obviously today is Canada Day. And it's a big one. 150 years being the accepted metric. So I figured I better do something to celebrate the musical brilliance that our great (both in size and quality) country has. A mix? Too much work. An artist showcase? Too many to name. A Top 5? Too restrictive. A top 150? I probably could have. But let's just move the decimal place over one digit and call it a day. So without further ado here's my 15 favourite Canadian tracks released in the first half of 2017. Note the order was determined by when they aired on Bump In The Hump. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Jacques Greene - To Say

This past Friday Jacques Greene released his much anticipated album Feel Infinite on LuckyMe Records. The veteran DJ and producer is no stranger to incredible original productions, with tracks like "These Days" garnering strong support from Annie Mac and others. And while he's been relatively quiet release-wise, it's almost assuredly a result of an intense focus on Feel Infinite. A focus that shines bright throughout the cohesive and emotive album, as each track has been clearly polished beyond compare, playing its role perfectly in the opus that is Feel Infinite. While you can call his tracks house, I find it hard to accept it as just that. Ever since I first heard, the Will Ferrell from Old School aided track, "I Like You" I've had a hard time quantifying Greene's releases. They are quite simply quality, thoughtful and supremely designed electronic productions. Just damn good music, regardless of genre.After having already heard both "You Can't Deny" and "Afterglow" on Bump In The Hump, it's my pleasure to be able to play yet another cut from Feel Infinite tonight, "To Say." You can also see Jacques Greene as he returns home to Toronto at the tail end of his tour, April 15th at Velvet Underground (RSVP and Tickets). "To Say" isn't the only Friday release that gets a spin on Bump In The Hump tonight, I've also got a track from BADLQQK's RQQKIES 2. Nor is Feel Infinite the only new album represented, as I've got a track from Honey Beard's debut Dreamless Sleep, out this Friday. Finally we enjoy an onslaught of house from Cosella, Smalltown DJs, Pat Lok and birthday boy Frustra, who is playing tonight at Edenhall and Saturday at The Beaver. Top 100 Tracks of 2016: 100 - 67

Starting today through Friday, I'll be revealing my list of the top 100 tracks of 2016. The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it's important to preface this list with my methodology. I thought long and hard about this list, what and who I should include, where each track should fall, and how to go about doing that. Should I include multiple tracks from one artist? Am I trying to make a point/statement with my placement of each track? How do I deal with the recency bias, and the counter-effect of that on older tracks? The reality is, this blog is mine and mine alone. It is one man's opinions and despite my claims, that these are the "top" or "best" tracks, they are more truthfully my favourite, and what I believe to be tracks/artists that deserve further praise. I did not conduct any surveys, base the ranking on plays or popularity, but rather I went with my heart.

As you'll see I did include multiple tracks from my favourite artists, as they are, at least in my mind, deserving. You'll also notice a hell of a lot of future bass tracks, as is only appropriate for 2016. I also tried to include a variety of other genres, but it will be clear what my tastes, and therefore favourite genres are. However, I certainly feel like this list ended up hosting very little "club" music, despite spending countless hour of 2016 in the clubs. That being said there are dozens of worthy tracks that I either forgot or excluded. Finally, I'll be posting a soundcloud playlist at the bottom of each post, as best I can, assuming each track is still online. So here we go with the first 34 tracks.

#100: Photay - Trophy
(As featured on EFYE) I had to choose one track from Photay's Sadie EP and as I wrote previously, "Trophy" is bold and beautiful. It's the kind of experimental track that I cannot place into a single genre, save for the catch all category of 2016, future bass. The synth work is brilliant and full of feels. And as you'll see, the progression and movement it boasts is the key to many of the tracks on this list.

#99: Cowboy Rhythmbox - Mécanique Sauvage
This techno joint takes be back to the days when the likes of Gesaffelstein, Justice and the classic Boys Noize and Erol Alkan's collabs dominated my playlists, so it's fitting that it was released on Phantasy Sound. The genius of "Mécanique Sauvage" is its raw hammering style, contrasted beautifully by subtle tweaks and progression. This would absolutely destroy a club.

#98: Terror Danjah - All I Need (ft. Dot Rotten)
I got scared for a second when I saw that this song was on soundcloud 3 years ago! However, it still qualifies for this list as it was only released in August of this year. This is one of the deeper more beautiful tracks on this list. Terror lays down a brilliant beat and Dot displays his vocal prowess in more ways that one. His flow is fire and his words will have you wiping away tears.

#97: Bob Moses - Like It Or Not (Joris Voorn Remix)
(As featured on EFYE) Of the Bob Moses remixes that could have fallen on this list, I decided to go with the Voorn version because of its truly epic nature. The journey Joris takes us on is absolutely breathtaking, it gives the feeling of flying with its soaring synths. At the same time it dives to an unknown abyss, with its dark, almost alarming, bass throbs. Buckle up for the brilliance of Joris Voorn.

#96: Solid Groove & Sinden - Din Da Da (Yolanda Be Cool Re-Jiggle)
This is another one of those tracks that take me back to the "good old days," specifically 2006/7 when the original was first released. I first heard this when RYME played it this summer, ushering in one of my most stanky, screw faces. On a proper system you'll be making the same oo's and ah's as the vocalist, thanks to the nonstop bouncy bass. This is a confirmed club killer.

#95: FrankJavCee - Pop Song (ft. Marionismagical)
(As featured on EFYE) I couldn't do this list without including this brilliant indictment of pop music, as you'll see there aren't many, if any, pop songs on this list. Not that there's anything wrong with them. And that's exactly what this song is about, how can you hate on pop music when you make an awesome pop song. Music is about enjoyment, and I thoroughly enjoy this and all tracks on this list.

Two videos showing why Cosella is so great

My love for Cosella is well established, I've written a number of posts on this blog about his tracks, and DJ sets, as well as premiering his latest production "No Boundaries" with FromDropTillDawn on Bump In The Hump. Last night I caught another set of his, while he opened for AC Slater, and I was also able to capture a couple moments that perfectly encapsulate why I love him and his sets so much. First of all he's a genuine dude, never passing up the opportunity to chat with me before/after his sets, always answering my questions, as to what he played etc. He's warm and funny, even jumping on stage early to do a pre-set stretching routine. Second, as I've mentioned many times before, his networking skills are nearly unparalleled, giving him truly unique tracklists every time he hits the decks. He's got a keen ear, always selecting the perfect tracks to get the crowd going. Whether it's Riton's "Rinse & Repeat," Noise Frenzy's "Pon De Floor" remix, the latest from Chris Lake "Operator (Ring Ring)" or Metroplane's "Bahp" below, he's always able command the crowd like a master.
This next video, I tweeted about at the time, saying I "captured the dopest three minutes of life," which he then followed with his remix of Destructo and Wax Motif's "Catching Plays." For some reason it sounded better than ever, causing me to wonder whether he made a VIP version. He said it was just the original remix, but in any case, it crushed again, making the killer three minutes into a fire five or so. What to expect from Anna Lunoe's Hyperhouse tour stop at The Hoxton

Anna Lunoe's Hyperhouse tour is set to make it's Toronto stop tonight at The Hoxton. The taste maker and Beats 1 host, has Vindata and DJ Sliink by her side for this leg of the tour, adding local talent Cosella for their stop in the 6ix. I've already touted this tour as one of the best of the year, but I'm about to make the case why. First let me start with Cosella, who continues his rise, gaining attention from big names Destructo, NEST HQ, and premieres on Lunoe's own show. He's also a friend of Bump In The Hump, where he premiered his collab with FromDropTillDawn, "No Boundaries." While still relatively fresh on the scene, he can already boast a series of quality releases, to go along with his strong networking skills that give him incredible exclusive and unreleased content for his deep DJ sets.Joining, Cosella as the night moves forward is New Jersey's own DJ Sliink. Previously known as Huglife, he is a master of bootleg remixes transforming the likes of Torey Lanez, D.R.A.M., Flume, Gnarls Barkley, among others, into Jersey Club weapons. Perhaps his most popular booty came in the form of the undeniably awesome Weeknd track "Wicked Games." Don't let this deceive you, Sliink is also a formidable producer of original tracks. His library is almost endless but here's a small sampling. The final opener, is duo Vindata, who despite being veterans of the scene, has absolutely exploded in the last year. Starting with their unbelievable EP, Through Time And Space, their long list of remixes, and their many productions with vocalist Kenzie May, Vindata's future bass vibes have catapulted them into collective consciousness. Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't make mention of their game changing collab with Mija, "Better." Expect these guys to bring an incredible energy, setting the stage for Anna. Of course, the headliner Anna Lunoe is the only way to wrap up this post. Her connections in the industry are nearly unrivaled, except perhaps for Beats 1 head honcho, Zane Lowe. This means that in addition to Anna's quality productions we can expect a unbelievable amount of new music from bootleg mixes, to exclusives and unreleased tracks. She is a DJ extraordinaire, and I expect nothing less than an absolutely off the wall party when she finally gets behind the decks. This truly is going to be one of the most special night's of the year, with what I would argue might be the best 4 DJ lineup The Hoxton has seen in that span. I fully expect it to busy early because of this fact. As of now ticket are still available online, details and such can be found at the facebook event.
