Enlightened Listening for August 14

The weeks continue to fly by and the mountains of new music continue to grow. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening features a pair of triumphant returns, several sensational singles, numerous killer collabs, another inspired slice from Hudson Mohawke and Sable Valley's massive debut compilation.

Kiesza's Crave marks the diva's first album since her traumatic 2017 car accident, and it's clear that she's come back stronger than ever. After going without an original in 2019, Marie Davidson is back to her old tricks with the sensational "Renegade Breakdown." Following the brilliant Brassica Crystal Sea EP last month, Feel My Bicep's followup Field Day delivers the kind of quality we've come to expect from the London label. More trustworthy labels follow as Ben Böhmer delivers another exceptional cut to Anjunadeep, and Lane 8 joins Yotto and his label Odd One Out.

Once again teaming up with Voicians, No Mana's "The Same Way" delivers electro ecstasy. Two dope, deep collabs follow that with "Love You Feel" and "Love Die" as the playlist heads into house. Upping the summer feels, Ibranovski's "Surfboard" and Goddexx's "Ask Me What I Need" are sure to make you move, while remixes from Plastic Plates and Youngr follow up with fabulous funky versions of "So Afraid" and "Discopolis 2.0," respectively.

Despite clamouring for more of Tiga and Hudson Mohawke's hardcore romance, the latter delivers the next best thing in his remix of twst, a track we first heard in their mix for Annie Mac. Another highly awaited release follows that as we get the final three quarters of Murlo's Primed For Primal. We're in full screw-face territory now as QUIX and Juelz link up for calamitous collab "Chicane." Finally it's fire on fire on fire with Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1 which is jam packed with weapons from RL Grime, Cozway, Holly, Jon Casey and more. Enlightened Listening for July 17

It's the weekend and that means mountains of new music for your ears. Coming into this week there were a few releases I'd had bookmarked, but little did I know just how much amazing content was on the way. Running 20 releases deep, this week's Enlightened Listening features an insanely long list of my favourite artists.

ATTLAS leads things off with a sublime single, which we first heard a demo of in September of 2018. Jim-E Stack follows that with the kind of soul-snatching quality we've come to expect. Building the energy back up, a Dombresky remix of TOKiMONSTA and a Lane 8 collab follow, each with captivating dance vibes. In a stunning turn, I just learned that Alex Metric, Riton and Shungudzo have combined under the KUU moniker and today they delivered their sensational debut single "How Could I Ever?," which follows a fabulous remix of Madonna (here). Turning towards disco we get an awesome run of my favourites in Late Nite Tuff Guy, Purple Disco Machine, Yuksek and Aeroplane remixing PNAU, Gaga & Grande, Dimitri From Paris & Aeroplane and Horse Meat Disco, respectively.

The remixes continue as Amtrac scores four equally alluring offerings from Grum, David Jackson, Francesca Lombardo and Panteros666. Qrion bookends this run of remixes with yet another slice of stunning craftsmanship. As things turn epic, Above & Beyond lead the way with a powerful, emotional trance cut ahead of a trio of EPs from GIGEE, 8Kays and Brassica. The former is exceptional tech house, the middle the kind of mystifying deep house that makes it a perfect fit on Booka Shade's Blaufield, and the latter an awe-inspiring odyssey through synths - a perfect fit for Feel My Bicep. And while we're on perfect fits, how does Soulwax and LA Priest sound? Amazing. That's how.

Tiga remains in top form as he follows his HudMo collab with another familiar face in Audion. This Is A Dream is classic Tiga, lively and life-giving techno. Next up is a nine-track compilation from Boysnoize Records featuring all kinds of awesomeness; a club killing comp that is sure to remind us all of the good old days in a sweaty club. And speaking of club killing stuff, thook drops off a triple-shot of sickness that one friend described as an "assassinating a pharaoh type beat." Finally, we walk off with an explosion at our backs as QUIX and Vincent join forces for TIGER DROOL, a massive new project full of promise. For those hoping Vincent would return to his XVII origins, this is your Superbowl.

Enlightened Listening for July 3

Bandcamp is at it again, once again waiving their fees, and of course that means this edition of Enlightened Listening returns to the popular platform. This week I've opted to add embeds for ease of access, but will refrain from doing release by release breakdowns and rather highlight those that require/deserve a little more shine. It's a diverse list with a number of killer compilations so take your time and be sure to check out each release, and of course purchase those that resonate with you.

Highlights/breakdowns: Cassius' final record with Philippe Zdar finally gets a digital release and it couldn't be a better, more fitting or prescient production. Absolutely one of the tracks of the year. GRRL's Marathon is incredibly powerful and immersive, a testament to their tremendous taste and ever thriving energy. Jaymie Silk's output this year has been stunning and this new release is reflective both of that and the trying times we're in - a truly brilliant (however dark) project. The BOOST TAPE is basically a who's who in trap, bass and all adjacent genres, and for just $10 is an absolute steal (not to mention it's all going to The Movement For Black Lives). Finally, the four-pack of "Mountains" remixes is too stacked not to showcase: 2x Paul Woolford, The Patchouli Brothers and Joey Negro. WOW.

Enlightened Listening for November 1

After one of the largest Enlightened Listening playlists last week, we're significantly shorter this week. We focus on a handful of singles, alongside a couple EPs and remixes. Things start poppy with exceptional singles from Kiesza and Dua Lipa who both remind us of their undeniable leading lady status. Kiesza's track shines, while Dua's bristles with funky bass leading us nicely into the delightfully easy dancing TOPS track "Seven Minutes." Diving disco, George Sandler and Justin Jay spin sublime with "Know How," before Fabrikate bring out the brass with the sensational "Love Was Real."

Pete Tong and HER-O find themselves in this list for the third week in a row as "Go Crazy" gets a groovy extension. Staying with remixes, the legendary Marshall Jefferson gives a more human heart to club killer "Turn Me On." Tuff London follows that with another unstoppable house cut that is sure to keep the floor moving. After that we get our first EP of the playlist, a trio of top notch remixes of Lastlings' "Last Breath," with a standout from Adult Art Club who we heard in Lane 8's Halloween mix.

Closing the playlist out is a foursome of house cuts from three of my favourite names. First, Billy Kenny once again captures my attention with incredible sound design and an unwavering rolling groove. Noizu follows that with another inventive cut, showing further range and equally incredible sound design. Finally, Stund delivers two killer cuts. Lane 8 - Halloween 2019 Mixtape

This Never Happened head, Lane 8 is at it again. Known for his quarterly, season-based mixtapes, he has just broken the mold by following his "Fall 2019 Mixtape" with a haunting Halloween edition. Stretching well over two hours, this mix strays a bit from the standard fare of seductive deep and provocative progressive house to allow for more spine-tingling techno and blood-curdling bass.

As always Lane 8's track selection reigns supreme. There's the usual onslaught of IDs, mixed in with some classic cuts from Justice, Gesffelstein and even The Bloody Beetroots' smash "Warp 1.9." And while those old cuts still hold power, it's the new and unknown tracks that do the most damage as you have no idea what evil awaits. Prior to "Let There Be Light," we're welcomed by a creepy choir of sorts. Later we're embroiled in a shadowy chase scene as wolves and all manner of malevolent monsters howl and yelp in the distance. Even deeper into the mix, the astral imagery becomes increasing alien, beaming us aboard a spaceship helmed by freakishly, grotesque creatures.

The whole of the mix is a heart-palpitating journey through sound, endlessly filling you with helplessness as you attempt to navigate the vile vision of Lane 8's crafting. Especially thanks to the largely voiceless nature of the mix, it is nearly impossible to rein in your imagination. Jerro - Pantheon

Lane 8's label This Never Happened has quickly become a go-to source for soulful, deep and progressive house. Over the few years of its existence it has introduced countless artists and given rise to some sublime singles. Belgium's Jerro, seemingly one of Lane 8's favourites as his tracks appear in most Lane 8 mixes, has just authored his second This Never Happened EP, Pantheon.

This four part EP builds on the success of awesome April debut The Fool, offering breathless and blissful beauty in its title track, magical souring synths in its midsection and a captivating killer cut, "Coil" at its close. "Pantheon" simply screams This Never Happened, and I'm totally here for it. Its power lies in the fact that it could easily be played acoustically while retaining its resplendent refinement. Warmth is the word that comes to mind when "HYE" hits my ears, while it too succeeds through a soulful grace and refinement. The following track "Lido" seems to straddle the previous two. It's like a beautiful sunrise, sending its radiance over the horizon while casting shadows to create a lush, picturesque panorama. Finally "Coil," the most powerful of the EP, sends you into said scene soaring through the hyper-real and incredibly cool environment. Enlightened Listening for June 21

For the longest day of the year we've got one of the longest editions of Enlightened Listening, clocking in at over 7 hours with an astounding 81 tracks. It opens with four exceptional albums including two we've been building up to here in Hot Chip's eccentric electronic odyssey A Bath Full Of Ecstasy and Mark Ronson's masterful pop presentation Late Night Feelings. Both share singles that I've been rinsing out like crazy and are instant inclusions in the album of the year conversation. Those two are joined by the final and gut wrenching end of Cassius, Dreems, and Shinichiro Yokota's delightful collection of dance joints I Know You Like It. Those four account for 48 tracks and without question some of the best pieces of music (vocally, lyrically, sonically, melodically, etc) you'll hear all year.

There is no let down following those massive albums however, as The Niceguys follow with a fourpack of uplifting funk from Westwood Recordings. Staying grooving but building towards bigger numbers, Rudimental and The Martinez Brothers combine for a magical piece in Faith Mussa-aided energy in "Sitigawana." Another exceptional collab follows in the fantastical feels of Lane 8 and Yotto's "I / Y."

Even more epic we go as Pryda offers up the kind of extended, intoxicating genius we've grown to expect from one of the world's most trusted names. The lead track "Illumination" is truly inspired, however the other five tracks are no mere tag-alongs as each holds the same Pryda power. 

After what seems like forever we finally have 1) new music from Afterlife and 2) the Ae:ther ID I'd been waiting on since Afterlife Voyage 013. The 20 track compilation once again proves Afterlife is perhaps the pinnacle of top notch techno. Adding another legend to this already epic list, The Chemical Brothers share a sensational dub version of "Eve Of Destruction." Staying dark and bass driven, Poppy comes in next with a desolate and dire number in "Choke." Finally we close the playlist with a trio of takes on Duke Dumont's "Red Light Green Light," which will have you dancing all the way through the weekend. Jungle - Lucky I Got What I Want (Avoure Remix)

Ukrainian producer Avoure got his week started right by taking us back to 2014 with his remix of London-based musical collective Jungle and their funky soul track "Lucky I Got What I Want." Like his jump-started arrival on the scene, a collab with Lane 8 entitled "Let Me," this remix also gets whipped up in a hurry. Delivering an upbeat, indie pop, deep house mixture, Avoure has imbued this track with a delightful dance energy. The drums drive the track forward while both the strings and synths dazzle. However, those awesome elements aside, I feel like the catchiness of the cool vocals and Avoure's intelligently crafted, almost crackling, atmosphere are what make "Lucky I Got What I Want" such a stunning success. It strikes me as a mix between Tiga's remix of Friendly Fires "Blue Cassette" (not just because of the accompanying artwork) and some of Alex Metric's more recent work with Anjunadeep (albeit with more frenzied movement). As a cherry on top, Avoure has offered up the extended remix for free via Google Drive. #50: ATLiens - Interstellar (ft. Sara Skinner)
One of the heaviest and most beautiful productions of the year. As many twists and turns as the Christopher Nolan film of the same name. Deft design leads the two unique drops with plenty of room for the organic instruments to play in the other sections. And while the drops will leave your jaw on the floor, their power would be nothing without the bristling bass guitar and hollow drums, especially noticeable in the final 30 seconds.

#49: David Guetta & Sia - Flames (Aazar Remix)
Easily one of the most upbeat and dance-friendly tracks of the year, it also brought about some of my biggest smiles of the year. Picture your favourite 80s film, now throw this in its soundtrack. Perfect fit, right? It could replace "Take On Me" or maybe better yet, Flashdance. Aazar let it all hangout with this one. The drums slap, the groove kicks ass and the solo at the end takes no prisoners. Fabulous fire!

#48: Iglooghost - New Vectors
Some geniuses can be a little much for some ears and sometimes that brilliance can simply miss our simple minds. That is not the case here with the seemingly alien intelligence of Iglooghost and "New Vectors," which has the ability to speak to us a whole new plane of existence. The wild, rapid fire, never ending list of ingredients combine and coalesce in one of the most inspired tracks of the year. It dazzles and uplifts especially through the angelic vocal samples and resplendent bells. True brilliance.

#47: MIST - Wish Me Well (ft. Jessie Ware)
Right in the midst of my latest love affair with Jessie Ware, as I awaited the chance to see her live (definitely in my top 5 shows of the year) this dropped and there was nothing that could pull me away from its crazy catchy, super smooth bounce. I can't get enough of the contrasting timbres of the two voices or the way they play atop this heater of a beat. Easily one of my favourite pop tracks of the year.

#46: Marcus Worgull - Love Song
Again my true colours are on full display as I just cannot find my way out of the 80s. The Cure's original, and its accompanying album, one of my favourites, Disintegration came out nearly a month after my birth so maybe that's why it holds such a special place in my heart. Or maybe it's because Robert Smith saved us from Mecha-Streisand... But seriously, this new version is simply sensational. The brilliant bass-line remains intact and is alluring as ever, while the expanded electronic soundscape sweeps you off your feet, like you're home/whole/young/fun/free/clean again.

#45: Sébastien Léger - Lost Miracle
(As featured on EFYE) An epic expansive, exquisite production that thrives off subtlety. A warm wanderlust, it feels more organic than it does electronic, and that is the brilliance of Seb Léger, an uncanny ability to breathe beautiful life into his synths. Do yourself a favour and check out his Youtube/Instagram for videos of him doing this live. And don't bother with the 4 minute version, the 10 is more than twice as a good, and really gives you time to grow with the genius grooves he lays down.

#44: Mixhell & Joe Goddard - Strong & Wrong (ft. Mutado Pintado)
Sound the alarm, it's the end of the world! Just like the #5 track I cannot help but hear Mutado Pintado's voice as a part of the 'Shut Up And Dance' episode of Black Mirror. And of course the Mixhell, Joe Goddard backing plays perfectly to that dire, helpless feeling. Brilliant brooding apocalyptic production from Mixhell with the right amount of bounce and funk from Goddard to make it easily consumable. Gotta give a nod to the Craig Williams remix which really digs into the funkiness. Awesome.

Another busy Friday, another great day for releases. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening includes the returns of Tchami, Botnek and WHIPPED CREAM, a genius album from Marie Davidson, one of my most anticipated tracks in the last while, Kevin de Vries' "Aratak" and a couple other gems. The times they are a changin'. This is the last new episode of Bump In The Hump before the new season (September 12th at 7PM), and of course summer is sadly winding down. But with that brings a final blow out with Electric Island's two day season finale. Sunday and Monday a couple dozen techno and house artist descend on Hanlan's Point and we'll get you ready for that on Bump In The Hump tonight. Enlightened Listening for July 20

After nearly losing it all this afternoon (my iTunes crashed and I thought I had lost all of my metadata), new music has arrived and saved the day (don't worry my iTunes is alive and well!). I'm going to have to keep things short and sweet as I'm running out of time, so no descriptions, just a playlist of new music ranging from funk to house and trap to techno/club/bass.
