My 5 Favourite Justin Timberlake Remixes

With JT set to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show tonight I figured I'd share my five favourite remixes of his prolific catalog. Unfortunately not all of the mixes are on Soundcloud so I can't make a playlist there, however I've made sure each track is linked properly. Also you'll note that my personal preferences trend more towards the future bass, trap, and jersey type tracks, but maybe that's more about Justin's proclivity to produce tracks that fit those kinds of feels. Either way enjoy, and grab the free downloads wherever possible (noted by asterisk). Finally, these are not sorted in any specific order just the way they occur in my iTunes.

Suit & Tie (Dillon Francis Remix)*

Maybe the most obvious inclusion. Two multi-talented artists at their best. A banger that grooves.

My Love (Playground Mob Remix)There aren't many remixes that nail the allure of Jersey Club than this. So much frivolous fun.

What Goes Around (eSenTRIK Remix)Of all of eSenTRIK's remixes this may be my favourite; retooling and building on, my favourite JT cut.

TKO (Lido Remix)

From the now lost Lido remix package of 2014, I see this as almost the perfect mixture of the two remixes above, with the added and undeniable genius of Lido's orchestration. The dopest drum fills.

Rock Your Body (Party Favor Remix)*The most elusive mix on the list. Short but sweet, funky and fun. Classic Benzi/Get Right Radio.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Bro Safari, Dillon Francis & Salvatore Ganacci - XL (Pat Lok Remix)

Apparently Pat Lok has been very busy producing. Even though his debut album just came out, he's proceeded to release two separate remixes in less than a week's time. After putting his spin on JNTHN STEIN's "Master Control," he returned with a rework of the three pronged collaboration, "XL." At first glance Bro Safari, Dillon Francis and Salvatore Ganacci's track doesn't seem ripe for the bright backbeat bounce of a Pat Lok production, but that's the genius of this mix. He recasts the vocals alongside a grand old groove, funking out everything with fabulous chords and effects. Stream below.We get "XL" on Bump In The Hump tonight, with a more full, dance-friendly set than usual. There's more funk from: Chromeo with Oliver, and Party Pupils' remix of Robotaki and Manila Killa. I've also got the premiere of a forthcoming Frustra collab, due out Friday Sept. 1st. Add to that some fire future bass and trap, some delightful deep house, a new banger from Leterna, and you've got yourself a full hour on Radio Humber. Pasdat - Don't Tell

File this one under dank, hybrid dubstep trap. Pasdat, whose bass heavy productions only reach back to last September, has been cementing himself as a force to be reckoned with. He's found himself on trap master UZ's Quality Goods Records, and the proud papa of 6 tracks each with at least 30 thousand plays. His latest "Don't Tell" continues his tradition of torturous trap bangers. It's pure evil right from the get go, with an atmosphere that wouldn't feel out of place in any modern day horror flick. But in this movie the evil isn't human, it's a mechanized parole officer. The terminator-esque enemy is strong on the trail of Pasdat's potency, sicing his robot dogs after the elusive producer. Drops don't get much more ratchet than this, it bursts into flames in an explosion of conflict. The only way to deal with such a riotous drop is to do like Dillon Francis did behind stage for Bastille at Coachella (video here). Best Tracks I Heard This Week

With this busy week of seeing Booka Shade and Grandtheft, and their openers Doorly and Pusher, respectively, I've been inundated with great tunes. Add to that the plethora of productions I hear on a regular day and I've got more music than I can handle. So I figured I'd throw together a playlist in honour of the massive week of music I've come across, or at least the ones on soundcloud. Enjoy!

Flinch - Pearl Sun

Buygore is back again with another fresh, free download, this time a future bass track courtesy Los Angeleno, Adam Glassco aka Flinch. The smooth flowing progressive track "Pearl Sun," dropped Monday, ahead of Flinch's Buygore debut EP Restless, set to be unleashed on the world, May 27th. To be honest, I haven't heard anything from Borgore that I've really liked in quite some time, that being said I'm still an incredibly big fan of his work heading Buygore. The quality tracks Buygore has put out is mind blowing. Just in the last month or so, they've dropped EPs and tracks from the likes of TastyTreat, MYRNE, Spag Heddy and the duo behind one of my favourite tracks in that time, K Theory, "Got Me." But enough of that, back to Flinch, and his track "Pearl Sun."

I'm absolutely enthralled in the explosion of future bass tracks out there. Flinch's "Pearl Sun," utilizes so many of the aspects of that particular subgenre while adding his own throbbing, bouncy bass breaks, under flourishes of sparkling synths, poignant piano chords, pulverizing percussion and just the right amount of video game-esque vocal samples adding playful depth, firmly stating this is not music to be taken seriously, but rather a track for pure unadulterated enjoyment. The swirling synth movement allows the track to flutter in the much needed cool breeze, as a respite from the heat of the "Pearl Sun."

I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of "Pearl Sun," as well as checking out the other already released track "Whatcha Know About," from Restless, and if I may recommend one more of his productions, I suggest his remix of my all time favourite Dillon Francis track, "Without You."

Dillon Francis & NGHTMRE - Need You

Just less than 3 months since I first caught NGHTMRE dropping the, then work in progress (WIP), collaboration with Dillon Francis "Need You," it's got an official release on Mad Decent. Video below.

People have been losing their minds over the rapid-fire bazooka like drop as both of it's creators have been previewing it at many festivals, and tons of videos have surfaced (at Euphoria Fest, at IDGAFOS Weekend and OMFGNYE 2016). I knew immediately when NGHTMRE dropped it at The Hoxton, he and Dillon had a weapon of mass destruction on their hands. The building shook under the incredible drop, as it often does, but there was something different about "Need You." It may be the sub-harmonic sweeps, the punchy percussion, the stunning synth chords or their sublime combination, but whatever it is, there's undoubtedly some magic in the moombahton mayhem of NGHTMRE and Dillon Francis' "Need You." Available now everywhere, "Need You," is set to receive a number of remixes, and you can be a part of it. Dillon Francis, known for his incredible acting and content creation, has invited you to do the album artwork for the forthcoming remix EP. More accurately you have to draw on a blank CD as though we were back in the early 2000s. Good luck finding a CD, if you need any help, I suggest you follow Dillon's step by step procedure in the video below.

NGHTMRE Drops New Exclusives

This past Friday, NGHTMRE wowed the crowd at the Hoxton with a whole bunch of new material. As you see in the videos below, 2016 is looking tremendously bright for NGHTMRE who is set to once again explode with new productions including remixes of "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites":

NGHTMRE dropped exclusives all over the faces of Hoxton partiers, so much so that revelers were constantly reaching for high fives and fist bumps, congratulating the producer on his track choices, and monsters drops. Look for these tracks and more to be released in the near future.

What So Not - Gemini EP

Perhaps the most anticipated EP of the year finally dropped, and you can pick it up for free! The five track EP, Gemini, is Flume's last hurrah with Emoh Instead as What So Not, and punctuates a truly great run of productions from the duo. They had been arguably the best and most consistent duo on the planet, until it was announced that Flume would be leaving. Oddly enough, it was around the same time Skrillex and Diplo took the world by storm with Jack U, but I digress. It's only fitting in my mind that the aussie duo that seemingly appeared all at once, and grabbed the scene by the scruff of it's neck, wrap things up with with an EP of Gemini's caliber. The free EP is a combination of tracks that their fans have been craving for more than a dozen months. Earlier this year the released the title track "Gemini" with George Maple, after having previewed it as an 'ID' as early as last summer. But it isn't the only one that's been in floating around our consciousness since last summer. You may very well remember their collab with Dillon Francis, "Dill's Mom" having been teased for an unyielding amount of time. It's also on the EP but retitled and slightly retooled as "Arrows" with Dawn Golden. 

The EP is rounded out with two more collaborations with KLP on "Death Drive" and Tunji on "Intro," as well as one final Flume & Emoh original "Oddity" which holds up to the high What So Not standard easily fitting in with "Jaguar," "Touched," and "The Quack." It's you're last chance to enjoy the collaborative efforts of Flume & Emoh, and although I expect to hear great music from them individually, I doubt we'll ever get anything that can rival their genius productions: their Major Lazer "Get Free," Parachute Youth "Awake Now," Van She "Idea of Happiness" or my favourite track of their's "Love Theme." Monday Mashed Up Mix #5

Each Monday I post a little mix of less than 30 minutes for your listening pleasure. It contains a variety of electronic music mixed and mashed up to varying degrees. The music is always first and foremost while DJing and mixing skills are meant to take a back seat. It includes some brand new stuff but also some forgotten gems and whatever it was that had entered my consciousness. Best Mixes Of 2015

One of my favourite things about electronic music is the prominence of mixes and the curating that comes along with being a DJ. There are so many different kinds of mixes, some that are heavily pre-produced and others that are created organically, on the spot, both are valuable and can serve different purposes at different times. I love listening to them any time I'm doing anything, whether it be at working, working out, travelling, playing video games, washing the dishes or doing yard work. Over the years I've become a fan of a variety of different programs, podcasts, annual festival promo mixes or just whatever live set I can find. After the break, I'll be posting a large number of my favourite mixes from a variety of places. But to whet your appetite, check out this one from Alison Wonderland at The Mixmag Lab in Los Angeles.

Her set at the Hoxton was definitely one of the best I saw all year, the most energetic and intense DJing, that's for sure. I always feel like the more into the music the DJ is the more the crowd gets into it, Alison get top marks for this. Always really appreciate DJs not sticking to one genre or sound, especially when more than an hour long.

Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets (A-Trak Remix)

It was only a matter of time until the big name official remixes of Disclosure hit the internet and our ear holes. Last week Dillon Francis dropped his version of the Sam Smith vocal aided "Omen," and now A-Trak has followed suit, showing off his resplendent remix of the Lawrence Brothers' collab with Lorde, "Magnets." Lately, A-Trak has been crafting clever and conscious tracks that just cry out for the repeat button; I still wake up most mornings singing "We All Fall Down."

Relive Mad Decent Block Party (Review)

As you ought to now know I have finished my life as host of Enlightenment For Your Ears, on CFBU 103.7 FM, and it couldn't have come at a better time. This being the first Friday following my massive grand finale show, I was allowed the freedom to attend one of the most highly anticipated shows in Toronto EDM history, the second annual Mad Decent Block Party. I can honestly say that it was entirely excellent despite what many would call a sub par line-up (especially when compared to other MDBPs around North America) as a result of the date coinciding with the biggest EDM festival the world has to offer, Tomorrowland happening simultaneously in Belgium. This for me was the reason we didn't get the likes of Dillon Francis, Baauer, Flosstradamus and many other brilliant Mad Decent members, again despite fact this I would called the 2013 Toronto version of the MDBP a huge success. With this post it is my intention to showcase the great local and Canadian talents that were present, as well as allow those of you who unfortunately missed out on this great event, to enjoy much of the music that was played and which has become ear-worms for myself. In the next paragraphs I will make my way though the lineup of those played and highlight tracks that I feel deserve a second look. Unfortunately, for those who are interested in Riff Raff and El Dusty, I have nothing substantive to say as I was not as interested in these acts and cannot accurately comment as to what they performed. Let us now dive into the first act I was mentally present and prepared for.

THUGLI:

If you are a fan of EFYE you will immediately recognize this duo as local Torontonians Pat Drastik and Tom Wrecks. I am outwardly a huge fan and supporter of these two and despite being essentially the first act of the day put on an amazing set, which showcased a number of their own productions as well as some brilliant scratching skills. Many kudos to them for kicking off the day and preparing us for the massiveness to come. Below is a list of tracks (and links so you can listen to what) I can recall from their set:

A TRIBE CALLED RED:
Fans of EFYE may not be familiar with this brilliant trio hailing from Ottawa, made up of DJ NDN, DJ Shub and Bear Witness. I too had only heard of this group without having heard their music, and boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. These three as ATCR decribe their sound as Powwow-Step, which if you are a fan of EFYE you might want to imagine Dillon Francis with elements of First Nations music, particularly vocal chanting and drumming. Their music would work perfectly at a bonfire rave; it is perfect to lose yourself to music. I was so impressed with these three, as perhaps I ought to be as a result of there being three member allowing for more scratching, crowd involvement and more all around quality mixing and DJing. Not only was this set mind blowing for all of the thousand or so that were there early enough, but for someone of my specific age and generation, ATCR included some easter eggs from both their and my childhood. Absolutely brilliant mixing and sampling of the Sesame Street theme as well as the Reading Rainbow (as seen similarly HERE when they played in Detroit earlier this year). Once again below find those tracks I can clearly recall:

GRANDTHEFT:

Again fans of EFYE will be very familiar with this great local Torontonian talent who rounded out three Canadian artists in a row, and played one of the greatest sets I have ever witnessed and perhaps one of the greatest sets Toronto has ever seen; I simply cannot say enough positive about this talent, his showmanship and producer-ship. I am so proud to be living in the same city and this genius and am so lucky to be alive at a time when he has begun his rise into worldwide stardom (deservedly so). If you follow music at all I'm sure you are aware of the twerking phenomenon happening throughout North America headed by the likes of Diplo, the don of Mad Decent, and championed by worldwide idol Miley Cyrus (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C). Grandtheft has intelligently latched his star to the likes of the twerk and more specifically Miley's twerking in his most recent collaboration with Skratch Bastid entitled Miley; he even had someone dressed in a bunny suit, clearly referencing Miley first twerking video (see exhibit A above). Yet again it is time to make reference to the tracks he played out (at least to my recollection):

• His aforementioned collab Miley mixed into a forthcoming collab with Hedspin

ZEDS DEAD:
This Torontonian duo followed Riff Raff and while I generally find their dubstep sound almost offensive to the ears I was again pleasantly surprised come the end of their set. To the best of my knowledge their set started with nearly all dubstep and this threw me off as for the most part MDBP was almost entirely a trap show. By the end of their set they had successful changed my cynical mind through featuring some great Canadian classics as well as some of their own originals from their past. Here we go again:

MAJOR LAZER:

The much anticipated main event of the evening was thoroughly enjoyable from a musical standpoint although I must admit I was quite disappointed in the entirely absent DJing. It seemed as though each and every song was either cut short or spun back. The set was one of the most choppy set I've ever witnessed and were it not the case that I love nearly every Major Lazer track I would have been entirely disappointed. I understand that Diplo, Jillonaire & Walshy Fire were the headlining act for each stop of the tour (which would be quite tedious) and that they were missing out on Tomorrowland to play a much smaller set in Toronto, I can rationalize why they merely wanted to have fun and get the crowd involved, yet I feel that we ought to have had a better chance to hear some of their tracks played out in their entirety and as a DJ I would have really appreciated witnessing some true DJing skills. Nonetheless here is what I heard:

In conclusion I am very happy with the money spent in comparison to the previous event (Digital Dreams) and the fact that I was able to catch nearly the entire Block Party, although it wasn't much of a Block Party being that it was situated directly between the GO tracks and the Gardiner, yet that didn't end up being much of a deterrent. The venue was actually quite good and I thoroughly enjoyed not being surrounded by alcohol drinkers thus able to stay more clean and not sticky although I cannot say the same for my feet which ended up looking more like hooves than anything else by the end of the night; those who wore shoes didn't have this problem so I guess I only have myself to blame. Finally I'd grade this version of the Mad Decent Block Party as better than decent, it gets a solid A in my books with many pleasant surprises, all in all a great time!
