Enlightened Listening for August 6

It's that time again, time for another edition of our weekly new-music playlist, Enlightened Listening. The theme of this week would appear to be triumphant returns/blasts from the past. The first of those three thematic leaders is Fake Blood, who delivers 10 new tracks in the latest release centred around Ian Urbina's The Outlaw Ocean. Immediately after that in the playlist is TWRK classic "BaDinga," as refreshed and reloaded by DJ Sliink. Finally, Point Point make a triumphant return with their first new release in over 3 years. Staying with the retro trend, that's what The Weeknd delivers in his new single "Take My Breath," a spiritual successor to "Blinding Lights."

Of course, that Weeknd track is a standout, but there's plenty of others worth paying attention to. Both of the LPs from Monkey Safari and Lakou Mizik/Joseph Ray are incredible rides, just as the singles from Ben Böhmer, Franc Moody and Louis La Roche are utterly intoxicating. Finally, I just have to give it up to tails for an impressive EP on bitbird, as photos of the sun is brilliantly inspired. Stream the playlist, organized for maximum flow, below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Enjoy!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sophia Bel - No More (Durante Remix)

As we continue to cruise towards summer, Bump In The Hump has one more extended episode before we once again cede the final ten minutes to a My Mixtape interview. Just as we did last week, we showcase all but the kitchen sink as we glide through genres.

Following a deep, funky opening, our hands get raised in the air as we take in truly euphoric stuff from Nathan Micay and Pat Lok. And while I love those two tunes, they pale in comparison to Durante's radiant, resplendent take on Sophia Bel's breathtaking "No More." Instantly buoying, the remix features a plethora of percussion and, of course, Miss Bel's beatific vocals. However, the real hook of "No More," the one that keeps me coming back, and solidifies its spot as one of my favourite productions of the year, is the sublime, strident chord structure. It's hard not to be repetitive with words like resplendent, buoyant and euphoric when describing music, but there's no denying the resonance of those adjectives with this track. At low volumes, "No More" tickles the senses. When turned up, it sends you soaring, powered by PLUR. Get it below and catch it in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Enlightened Listening for April 30

It's new music Friday, and it seems like the theme this week was LPs. With more than a handful of albums we've been building towards dropping today, only four made the cut for this week's Enlightened Listening, as they go deeper than their singles. Each of Tor, Rochelle Jordan, Moullinex and Cadence Weapon captured the quality of the long-form release, taking listeners on diverse yet equally compelling journeys. Aside from the albums, the playlist opens with a fist full of funky stuff, including remixes from Pat Lok and the dynamic duo Breakbot & Irfane. Two Toronto talents follow that, as Frustra and The Kount hit us in the feels. After Tor's Oasis Sky comes a trio of remixes of Robotaki, each seemingly better than the next. Finally, bookending the last two LPs are two strong singles in the nasty Night Bass garage groover, Badger's "Give It To Me" and Prospa's rapturous "WANT NEED LOVE." Enjoy!

Top 100 Tracks Of 2020: 100-76

Starting today through New Year's Eve (Thursday), I'll be revealing my list of the "Top 100 Tracks Of 2020." The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it important to preface this kind of list with some insight into its creation and the methodology behind it. While I spent a lot of time seriously pouring through this year of music, this is not really a serious endeavour. No one was polled. Sales and streams are irrelevant. This is merely my fun way of sharing the tracks and artists that made my year better, in hopes they do the same for you. The rankings are not scientific or even fair, rather they are simply a reflection of how strongly I felt these tracks and how much praise I felt they deserved.

You'll notice the thread of disco/funk continues to run through these year-end lists, while DnB and breaks appear more than ever before. Another trend continues as we see a further diminishing amount of club-type tracks included, primarily as circumstances changed consumption and led to the vast majority of my musical enjoyment coming on my many escapist bike rides. That said, the power of some of these tracks is unavoidable as they will assuredly kill when clubs come back.

Finally, I will once again say that this is by no means an exhaustive list; there are without a doubt exceptional tunes that somehow failed to make the cut. However, onward and, in this case, downward, from tracks 100 to 76 we go. Find the Soundcloud playlist here and Spotify here.

#100: Weiss & Harry Romero - Where Do We Go?
An early summer earworm. Makes masterful use of the sample from Alan Parsons Project "Games People Play." Not overly inventive or banging, but rather slick, smooth and altogether enjoyable. The first of many house tracks in this list that captured my heart this year, even if only for a moment.
While it's been half a decade since I spent day after day with HAIM and Days Are Gone, the sisters and their work with Ariel Rechtshaid and Rostam Batmanglij remain close to my heart. A toss-up as both this and "Now I'm In It" are perfect for 2020, I landed on this garage joint thanks to its catchy, crisp and crackling production and overall atmosphere.

Fabulous French filter disco house. Almost too slick. Undeniably good and groovy. The kind of track that has you tapping your toes uncontrollably and later leaves you humming its magnificent melody.

An acid-induced fever dream. Propelled by Nair's potent percussion and scintillating synths. Like so many of the tracks in this year's list, "3XL" is all about the journey. There's no skipping ahead to a dope drop or sick section, rather one has to ride out this rolling wave of resplendence.

Perhaps the most ominous and irksome track in this list. Spine-tingling strings, all kinds of ingenious percussive hits and of course the equally screwface and shiver-inducing sub-bass. Truly diabolic dubstep.

Among the year's most fun and funky productions. I know nothing about Soda State, nor had I ever heard them before this, however their inclusion in Magic Tape 98 made for an incredible introduction. An awesome mix of pop sensibilities alongside retro dance resplendence.

A track so infectious that I can turn a blind eye to its misleading moniker. The trumpet (not sax) top-line is awesome, as are its babbling vocal bits, but it is the way those two elements play with the rollicking percussion that makes this track one of the year's best house offerings. Like many on this list, I expect this would have ranked much higher were clubbing possible in 2020.

Enlightened Listening for May 15

Another week has passed and so it's time for another edition of Enlightened Listening. I'm gonna keep things relatively short and sweet this week, so read into the playlist in the following paragraphs or just listen at your leisure below. Have a great weekend, enjoy and stay sane!

Albums from Moby and Nathan Micay open the playlist, each ingenious in their own right. A couple EP pairings follow as Anjunadeep and Speicher deliver the kind of quality one can expect from the legendary labels. Mind Against then break the ice on a number of forthcoming remixes of Dominik Eulberg's Mannigfaltig. A quartet of larger EPs follow that remix as the playlist straddles the house/techno boundary. My favourite from each of the four, respectively: "Maranta," "Echoes From Beyond," "Red South" and  "Les Gens."

The back half of the playlist opens with the 3rd version of what was Hunter Siegel's house hit "Waiting Up," now updated to better fit HNTR's techno turn. Another ingenious revision follows that as Four Tet puts his inimitable touch, and a peak time touch at that, on Caribou's brilliant "Never Come Back." The whole playlist turns on its head with the next track, "Arch Enemy" from the fabulous Everything Everything. Even funkier, the final three releases from The Phenomenal Handclap Band (with an incredible album), Pat Lok and The Magician will have you dancing all the way through the weekend.

Moby - All Visible Objects

Nathan Micay - The World I'm Going To Hell For

Nox Vahn & Marsh - Come Together / Naturish

Robag Wruhme - Speicher 115

Dominik Eulberg - Goldene Acht (Mind Against Remix)

Enlightened Listening for March 20

This week's Enlightened Listening is a little different. Instead of hosting all the releases in a Spotify playlist, I've opted to move to Bandcamp because they've waved sales fees for the day in order to help artists dealing with lost income as a result of COVID-19. Sadly Bandcamp does not have a playlist feature, so you'll have to click through to hear each release, and please be patient as they're obviously dealing with higher than normal traffic. Also note that some of the releases are "name your price," so while you don't have to pay, please do if you can. We're all in this together after all. Enjoy, and stay safe and sane.

Nick Bike - March 2020 Edits
Fun, club friendly mashups from the master. Chic vs Doja Cat. Kanye vs Childish Gambino. Etc.

Pat Lok - Party Licks Vol. 1
Funky remixes of classic cuts from Daft Punk, Rihanna, Phoenix, and more.

Ticklish - Ticklish Reboots Vol. 7.2
Juke, footwork and bass takes on popular RnB and rap tracks, including an unreal take on "The Box."

Ase Manual - Fuji Club Music
Even more bass and club focused than the above, Manual always injects energy into his beats.

Jaymie Silk - Diasporave Part 1 and Part 2
Hypnotic and powerful, Silk's productions are always ear-opening and truly inspired.

Martyn Bootyspoon - NO. 1 CRUSH REMIXES
All the acid you can handle in these gorgeous get-downs.

Slick Shoota - True Romance & China Blue (Slick Shoota Bootlegs)
Peak energy. Maybe not the best for quarantine, but we all need to let loose every once in a while.

MSSINGNO - CAYA / GUIDERS / HIGHLIKE2
The enigmatic producer is in fine form with three new sublime singles like only he can craft.

Demora - First Sessions
Persuasion and softcoresoft combine for three live sessions wandering through dub, techno and rave.

CFCF - Blowing Up The Workshop 48
A mix now split up into an album. Expansive and full of organic instrumentation. Perhaps the coolest of all of the releases.

Ekcle - Pearl Jigsaw Remixes
Three equally engrossing remixes, each with their own amazing power and poise.

Kontravoid - Too Deep Remixes
Gothic, industrial remixes. I'm extra partial to these 1) because I absolutely love "Cost Of Life" and 2) I'm getting tastes of Rammstein, especially in Fractions remix of "So It Seems."

Dennis Ferrer - Hey Hey (Riva Starr Paradise Garage Extended Remix)
Defected stays epic. 12 hours of live content on their Youtube and nearly 13 minutes of Riva Starr here.

Paul Chin - Full Spectrum
Brilliant and beautiful throughout. Polished and powerful. Really, really well done. Obviously I'm recommending each of these releases, but this is the one I'd suggest to the most people. That good.

Ric Wilson & The Kount - selfdistance2020
The Kount is everywhere and the world is a better place for it. Couple nice little pick-me-ups here.

Paragon Cause - Lost Cause
The right send off for this list. Stride triumphantly into the dream soundscape led by Opthof's vocals.

Enlightened Listening for March 13

In part because there's so much great music out today while while also wanting to share as much as possible, to keep people entertained in this time of need, this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is by far the biggest ever. Featuring 54 releases, it's nearly 200 tracks long, running well over 15 hours. Of course it would be impossible to address each of the releases, so I won't even try. Instead, I'll just note that there is a general flow to the playlist below, moving from lighter to heavier records, so depending on what you want or are looking for I recommend clicking around to find a section you like. However, I will recommend that you give each release a go, as the basis of these Enlightened Listening playlists are to open your ears to something new. Anyway, that's all for now. Enjoy and stay safe and healthy!
