LIZ - Pandemonium

There are very few 'pop' artists I enjoy more than LIZ. Over the years she's tapped some talented producers to bring to life her incredible artistic vision. Favourites include: Djemba Djemba for "Underdogs" with RiFF RAFF, Lido for "Y2K," SOPHIE for "When I Rule The World," Henrik The Artist for "Wild Target," and Wave Racer for "Queen Of Me." Yesterday she did it again as she linked up with Grammy nominated Finnish producer, Nico Stadi whose credits include Justin Bieber, Lindsey Stirling and Goldroom, to name just a few.

"Pandemonium" does a great job of living up to its complex and crazy namesake with its wild sound design and onslaught of effects. That said Stadi does a masterful job of keep it all taught, in its short pop delivery. LIZ's lyrics mirror the groove and get down of the bouncy bed, bringing her trademark throwback fun and goofiness, never more apparent than in the line "I make it pop like a VHS." And while there's always room for experimentation and progression in an artistic ouvre, consistency in the world your art creates is the best reward for your fans. That's exactly what we get with the look for "Pandemonium" which arises at the end of the music video from her previous single, "Super Duper Nova." Extended List of Grammy Predictions

Just for fun I'm making an extended list of Grammy predictions/bets, to go with those I already did for the categories relevant to this blog (read here). In order to save time I'm only going to list the category and who I believe will win, and in some cases who I think should win. I will be skipping the categories I know nothing about or have no taste for. There's dozens of places to find the full list of nominees and eventual winners, and while nothing beats the official source I'm not a fan of their website and generally choose to use Wikipedia here. I'll be live tweeting here as I watch both the pre-ceremony telecast (streamed via www.grammy.com) and CBS broadcast late via PVR.

MssingNo - M1 Personal Trainer [Mixtape]

Enigmatic DJ and producer, MssingNo just dropped a brand new 23+ minute mixtape, filled with tracks all coloured in his dark, atmospheric and orchestral club idiom. Think of this as a mix of Cashmere Cat and Hudson Mohawke, if they were playing a dimly lit stage in an almost empty club, while people just went about their business, chatting about their days, relaxing and enjoying some libations. Now picture this all in a digitized anime landscape, and you've got "M1 Personal Trainer." The movement and atmosphere MssingNo creates is simply sublime. The contrasting waves of bright and dark sounds, through post-club remixes of Zara Larsson, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, firmly situate MssingNo in a shortlist of producers, pulling back the curtain, showing us what the future of music sounds like. This is the kind of mixtape I could easily listen to dozens of times, in part due to the smooth, cyclical repetition MssingNo has so brilliantly brought forth, as the mix begins and ends with versions of Daft Punk's "Technologic." Immediately enamouring, each of the tracks play an essential role in this expertly crafted virtual reality ride into the future of music. Usually I'd say do not sleep on MssingNo, but I think it's highly likely that his music will weave its way into your dreams, even if you are in fact sleeping. This truly is the material dreams are made of. "M1 Personal Trainer" is available entirely free, via mediafire.

The Best Walk Up Tracks/Entrance Music

Yesterday was my first day in a new baseball 'beer' league, and it's got be thinking about a number of empowering tracks that I'd love to have blasting while I walk to the plate or come out to the mound. Ever since I was young (and dumb enough to think wrestling was real), I would pretend I were coming into a packed arena to a la Rocky, or more recently Floyd Mayweather with boy wonder, Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne rapping at his side. Entrance music or in baseball, walk up tracks, have to be immediately recognizable, hit hard right off the bat and instantly, thrust its atmosphere of intimidation onto the scene. With that in mind, I've compiled a number of my favourite tracks to puff up my chest and peacock my way into the batter's box or onto the mound. The first, and most recently released, Dr. Fresch's "Gangsta Gangsta" exudes strength and intimidation; Baby Eazy-E's vocals only further that threatening atmosphere, of "don't fuck with me." You've heard it in in Budwieser's latest commercial campaign, Baauer's use of infernal horns, makes "Day Ones" one of the best examples of empowering tracks, that makes any entrance epic. While the lyrics may not be the best fit, the first 5 seconds of OG Maco's collaboration with bad boys TWRK, is incredibly powerful and invokes a strut that rivals any wrestler entering the ring. Despite taking a couple seconds to really hit its anthemic stride, Rustie's "Big Catzz" leaves just the right amount of room for one of the Buffer brothers to announce your entrance. Another of the slow burning, building intensity, Black Tiger Sex Machine's collaboration with Lektrique's flows incredibly ominously underneath the unholy warbling, before exploding in a fury. I would be remiss if I didn't include some NGHTMRE on this list, as he's been so influential in my musical enjoyment in the past year or so, and his remix of Slumberjack "The Others" my favourite of his catalog and perhaps the best suited for this category of tracks. Another one of my favourite artists, Henrik The Artist, may not be the most intense, but this mashup with Lethal Bizzle, courtesy Non Stop Pop, combines the genius "On The Moon" and LB's grime laden vocals.

Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam - Sex

The massively debated and previously unidentified Spinnin' Records track, that's racked up over 623 thousand plays in just over two weeks has finally been revealed as a collaboration between trios, LA's Cheat Codes and Dutch Kris Kross Amsterdam, and is available for download today.
Aptly titled "Sex," has Spinnin' flexing it's label strength, procuring the rights to sample Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex." The line "all the good things and bad things" immediately called me back to Akon's use of that line in Kid Ink's "Rewind." That's not the only similarity between the two either. The vibes of each elicit a warm floating feeling. Where "Rewind" leans more on DJ Mustard's synth sound, "Sex" is significantly more tropical, very similar to Major Lazer and DJ Snake's "Lean On." Furthermore, the first twenty seconds have a distinct resemblance to What So Not's "Touched." One commenter called it a rip off of Where Are U Now, Lean On, Sorry and What Do You Mean. While "Sex" no doubt seems to borrow facets from all of these tracks, it is its own distinct production. It is, at worst a mere mashup of covers, and at best, a finely crafted combination of some of the best pop music from the past year.

Of course this isn't anything new for Spinnin' Records, being the host label for chronic recyclers Vinai. A quick survey of Vinai's catalog of releases makes it seem like they've only ever started one project file and just keep minutely changing each production before sending them to Spinnin'. This seems all too common for the Dutch label which continually churns out repackaged, commercially leverage-able music, whether it's from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Oliver Heldens or the Lost Kings, the other act many commenters thought might have produced "Sex." This isn't to say that Spinnin' is without merit, it certainly holds a different footing, philosophy and purpose than Dirtybird, Ed Banger, mau5trap or even OWSLA. Whatever the case, you can now get your copy of "Sex" now.

Maxo - Plushlined

Musical mastermind, Maxo is certainly in the giving spirit having just dropped the first single off his new EP for free. His brand new track "Plushlined" ought to ensure the hype for full release holds through the holiday season, though the clever and polished production value of his trademark arcade bit-tune style. His productions always transport the listener into some kind of high powered, bonus level of you favourite early Nintendo or Sega game. The atmosphere and flow is so seductive you can't shake the feeling that you've evolved into some kind of superhero capable single-handedly ridding the world of evil. The opening section invokes the menu and loading screens before the adventure really begins to take off; bright and beautiful synths are supported by snappy drum licks and just the right amount of symbolic effects set the mood. With a single and subtle flourish the image is changed and we're off running, jumping over obstacles and defeating enemies. The progressions and change in musical elements, while the same overall feel is maintained drives the movement through various settings on this musical level. The greatest success in the track lies in the constant development and progression in all of the musical elements, whether it is the drums persistent movement or the eternal evolution of the synths setting up all the elements to come. The track is perhaps one of the best boss fights beats I've ever heard and can assure you, your character will fare better with Maxo orchestrating your skirmish. If you need any more Maxo music to slaughter your enemies to, let me recommend: his original "Eddy Vancover," his cover of Justin Bieber "What Do You Mean" his album Chordslayer, and his Level Music collection.

Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets (A-Trak Remix)

It was only a matter of time until the big name official remixes of Disclosure hit the internet and our ear holes. Last week Dillon Francis dropped his version of the Sam Smith vocal aided "Omen," and now A-Trak has followed suit, showing off his resplendent remix of the Lawrence Brothers' collab with Lorde, "Magnets." Lately, A-Trak has been crafting clever and conscious tracks that just cry out for the repeat button; I still wake up most mornings singing "We All Fall Down."
