Enlightened Listening for August 27

I've had a terrible time keeping track of the days this week, missing my usual Bump In The Hump rollout entirely, but I've managed to pull myself together today for another shot of new music in Enlightened Listening. Leading the way into this week's playlist is pure bliss from Caribou. He's followed by a trend towards epics with grand designs from Helsloot and AVIRA, each of whom author awesome rides. Again epic, but undeniably in a league of its own, "Rainy April" finally gets its release nearly three years after its first play at ABGT300.

Turning towards the piano, TSHA's new single "I Know" completes her extremely cool & captivating OnlyL EP. Again all over the piano, as Paul Woolford always is, "Be A Rebel" gets an extended second take with New Order rejigging Woolford's remix. The second in a run of four remixes in a row, the playlist continues with Marshall Jefferson's masterful remix of the already exquisite "Music Saved My Life."

Headfirst into flames, the gyrofield remix of Hudson Lee's "Reanimate" sets off a run of energizing and oft-fierce DnB. While striking wildly different chords, the next two tracks, Flume's remix of "On A Mountain" and Heymac's "Katina," each tug at the heartstrings. Where "On A Mountain" scorches with sparking synths, "Katina" cools with pristine piano. Finally, the playlist closes with two uncapitalized Canadian talents, flowanastasia and thook. The former is fabulous on "River Flows," the second single from her forthcoming debut LP; the latter sends us off into DAWN, a tremendous seven-track immersion in all kinds of off-kilter, organic goodness, which once again reaffirms thook's status as a sonic artisan.

Enlightened Listening for December 18

In what will likely be the year's last edition of Enlightened Listening, we get one hell of a sendoff. Once again keeping things short and sweet, I simply recommend digging into each of these 16 releases. However, there are a handful of records that require just a little more love.

Atop a divine Danny L Harle take on The Corrs classic, Caroline Polachek indeed leaves me "Breathless." Turning the clock back even further, Derrick Carter, Dimitri From Paris, Seth Troxler, and Cerrone all put their touch on Fine Young Cannibals. Later, Lamorn delivers an absolutely genius remix of "Bridged By A Lightwave." LuckyMe and PC Music feature as the final two standouts with A. G. Cook remixes appearing on both; the former, a deluxe edition of Baauer's PLANET'S MAD, and the latter, an epic reimagining of Planet 1999's "Party."

Hot Chip - Positive (Marcel Vogel & Adam Port Remix)

In a bit of a sneaky surprise, Hot Chip have tacked on a tremendous new remix of their track "Positive," from 2019 album A Bath Full Of Ecstasy. Appearing as Pete Tong's Essential New Tune Friday night, the Marcel Vogel & Adam Port remix had me questioning what year we were in.

Indeed a new release despite Beatport, Spotify and Soundcloud all crediting the track to last year's remix LP, this epic take on "Positive" is quintessential Hot Chip. The technological twist Vogel & Port put on this track reminds me of perhaps my favourite ever Hot Chip release, the sensational saga that was their 2015 take on New Order's "Tutti Frutti." These two tracks share the same propulsive, funky assembly line feel, making masterful use of mechanical sounds and electrifying effects atop the ever-growing atmosphere. Of course, the electro groove and driving drums are the heartbeat of this powerful remix of "Positive," but the soul and magic of Vogel & Port's production comes from the killer vocal chops. And as always, this is the critical element for me: finding life and organic energy in an otherwise inanimate and entirely electronic production. Here in "Positive," the vivacity of the original remains and indeed blossoms into this beautiful, bouncy and brisk affair. Enlightened Listening for September 11

You know why you're here. All this week's new music that you need to hear compiled in the playlist known as Enlightened Listening. This week's edition opens with a slice of genius from SebastiAn, a new single from New Order and perhaps my favourite band's new album RE-ANIMATOR. The playlist then turns towards house with sick stuff from Bruno Furlan, Valentino Khan and Bassani x Prayer Handz. Seven Hours in Funkingham

Last weekend I came across London's Pied Piper, becoming inspired to write about his remix of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (read it here). I enjoyed it so much that I decided to follow him on Twitter, which behind Soundcloud is my top music discovery platform. He hasn't really tweeted anything aside from links to music, I'm actually alright with that, because it led me down a wormhole of wonderful remixes. Just as I was about to start putting together my playlist for this week's Bump In The Hump, I saw his tweet showcasing his remix of Yaz(oo)'s classic track "Situation." Of course I had to listen, and one thing lead to another and boom, I'd downloaded over a dozen remixes, and added another 35 more to the playlist below.

I knew I had a lot of digging to do because the many pages associated with Pied Piper are absolutely overflowing with tracks, but I set off into Funkingham (the most populated page), and compiled as many of my favourite remixes as I could find. We already know about the Tears For Fears remix, but there's takes on Rick James, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Gloria Gaynor, New Order, Sade, Boney M, and even Pink Floyd, Ghostbusters and Star Wars that will leave your head spinning and have you dancing for days. Seriously some of the coolest stuff I've ever come across, so be sure to give a good scroll through the playlist, pick up some of the free downloads, and follow Pied Piper for more magic.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather a selection of my favorite remixes. I can only imagine his originals are just as fun and funky as his remixes, however nothing beats the familiarity of this fantastic list of remixes. Press play and get lost in the magic of Funkingham.

Tiga - Make Me Fall In Love (Prosumer's Mysti Mix)

When listening to tracks on repeat while writing about them the tracks often end up leaving a stale taste in my mouth. I'm always looking for the next palette cleansing track, that no matter how many times I've heard it, brings that incredibly fresh and satisfying vibes. There's no other way to describe Prosumer's Mysti Mix of Tiga's "Make Me Fall In Love." I knew we were in for a doozy when both Boy 8-Bit and Tiga, himself, tweeted professing their love of Prosumer's prodigious production.

I can't decide what is more on point, Prosumer's mix or Tiga's description of it: "totally classy, slightly emo, deep and sweet." Prosumer succeeds in brilliantly utilizing the great foundation Tiga laid down in the original, and manipulating it into an almost New Order, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip-esque genius jam session. New Order - Tutti Frutti (Hot Chip Remix)

The soundcloud stream for this may be months old, but on just the second week of December, Hot Chip officially delivered one of the best remixes of 2015, a nearly twelve minute seductive and scintillating slice of dance music magic, in the form of New Order's "Tutti Frutti."
The epic nature of this remix never loses it stride continually rolling along, evolving alongside you, as you experience your flirtation with the dancefloor. Hot Chip always do an incredible job breathing soul and humanity into the inorganic, technological sounds; their tracks can bring even the most mundane to shining, sparkling and glowing life. The track becomes your guide and companion, your true love that you can depend and lean on.  "Tutti Frutti" comes to life in a calculated building of growing beeps and clicks chugging along building up steam and initializing its program. All at once a fully formed and comprehensive consiousness appears in the form of the first vocals, "Life is so crazy these days, I don't know how to adjust. Are we the master or slave?" Hot Chip showcase superb production value with each dissonant and crisp click, the bouncing and boundless bass synth, and the manifold atmosphere, all of which, come together to compliment and perfectly round out the vocals. The track is full of movement and subtle manipulations and surprises, easily making it one the most irresistible and dance-able tracks. Despite its long length it is ridiculously easy to get lost in its countless layers and hit that repeat button to relive the "Tutti Frutti " magic once more.
