It's Friday and that means it's time for this week's Enlightened Listening. Enlightened Listening for December 18

In what will likely be the year's last edition of Enlightened Listening, we get one hell of a sendoff. Once again keeping things short and sweet, I simply recommend digging into each of these 16 releases. However, there are a handful of records that require just a little more love.

Atop a divine Danny L Harle take on The Corrs classic, Caroline Polachek indeed leaves me "Breathless." Turning the clock back even further, Derrick Carter, Dimitri From Paris, Seth Troxler, and Cerrone all put their touch on Fine Young Cannibals. Later, Lamorn delivers an absolutely genius remix of "Bridged By A Lightwave." LuckyMe and PC Music feature as the final two standouts with A. G. Delicate and moving pieces, largely made up of organic instrumentation. A divine dive, perfect for piquing your palate ahead of a bunch of other brilliant releases.

Louis La Roche - Saturday Night Griever
A feature heavy album, that doesn't feel like the slightest bit disjointed as though it were a bunch of singles slapped together. That said, it often does slap. Really enjoyable and dance friendly.

Even more slaps here. Fantastic funky stuff. Worthy of its iconic title.

Holy stacked remix package, Batman! Gerd Janson, Kraak & Smaak and a Tensnake VIP?! I'm weak!

ABSOLUTE. - My Love
This man cannot miss. The original is awesome, but like with "String Theory" I'm drawn to the breakbeat VIP. If you're not on the ABSOLUTE. bandwagon yet, you're missing out big time.

Bicep - Atlas
Must I say anything more than new Bicep? I guess that's the point of this post, but really, they speak for themselves. An instant joy. The kind of track we need in these dark days. A ray of hope and light.

Kölsch - Time / Sleeper Must Awaken
See what I mean about a bunch of big names? The usual stunning, epic quality of Kölsch.

Sian - Electricity
Everything this man's put out on mau5trap has been excellent and the same can be said here. Killer crackling cuts that ought to inspire a bout of shadow boxing or a wicked round of an FPS melee.

BROHUG - Mixtape 1
The sick single "Detox" was in this playlist two weeks ago and the rest of the EP lives up to that lofty standard. Ridiculously banging bass house that thrives through exceptional sound design.

Dr. Fresch & FREAK ON - THICCC
Darker and dirtier than the above, believe it or not. I have not looked at the waveform but I can assure you it lives up to its title. This is some fat ish.

Enlightened Listening for February 21

This week's Enlightened Listening runs through smooth grooves before heading through the house trifecta of deep, disco and bass. There's two killer compilations, an unreal album from Claude VonStroke and a sublime single from Bullion. Fun, synth-driven singles from Jessy Lanza and Bullion will have you swooning before Sultan + Shepard's Kochi EP thrusts you towards the dance-floor. The next two releases really help you explore the floor as A-Trak & Ferreck Dawn collab "Coming Home" speaks to your soul and Jaded's Ounces inspires eccentric moves. Things turn euphoric and upbeat with the next two as Kiesza conquers another top-end and Will Easton whips up a ravey remix of Duke Dumont's "Therapy." Remixes rule the next two as a trio take on Dombresky (while adding a new original of his own) and legends Kenny Dope and Mat Zo offer up uniquely powerful mixes of Moon Boots. Staying legendary, Freaks & Beaks marks the triumphant return of Claude VonStroke fresh off an excellent Essential Mix last weekend. Enlightened Listening for June 2

Once again I'm late with this week's Enlightened Listening but it turned out for the best as it now includes Jai Paul. THAT'S RIGHT, JAI PAUL IS BACK! He leads the playlist with a double b-side of brilliance. Following that is the fantastically funky and highly anticipated LP from The Kount that had me floored with "Yesterday's Gain." Next up is Myd with another funk number, this time remixing Charlotte Gainsbourg. After that comes three consecutive killer vocal performances from Kaleena Zanders, Melba Moore and Kariya. As if that trio weren't enough to leave you heaving in ecstasy, how about another taste of Hot Chip's A Bath Full Of Ecstasy in the engrossing excellence of "Melody Of Love."

Moving towards techno comes a trio of remixes of RÜFÜS DU SOL's "Underwater," which is followed by EMERCIVE's latest and double shot of Booka Shade. Changing gears, Drainpuppet comes through with an epic 17 track album in Bliss. Turning dark and heavy, Falcons follows that up with a wicked remix of his classic "Aquafina." A couple of bangers follow in The Bloody Beetroots and Dr. Fresch's "Fkn Face," which is what you'll be making when you hear Trentino's remix of "Hustler." As if this list of legends weren't enough, Dog Blood come through with an exceptional EP in Turn Off The Lights, which is followed by an equally wild and twisted release in Wilted Woman's debut on Phantasy Sound.

Enlightened Listening for March 15

Right to the point with this week's Enlightened Listening. No descriptions below just a straight shot of more melodic stuff to start moving towards twisted trap at the end. A big beautiful album from Karma Fields kicks things off, CRi and Ben Böhmer's EPs follow, slick singles from Basti Grub, Pete Tong and Carl Cox then round out the techno section. Dr. Fresch and Sinden then link up for a couple killer bass house tracks, and the energy only rises from there with High Contrast taking on Stevie Nicks "Edge Of Seventeen." The final seven selections then bring the bass with a couple top notch trap EPs, but special attention must be paid to Riton's remix of The Chemical Brothers. The more I hear from them, originals and remixes alike, the more baited my breath becomes in waiting for No Geography.

Friday's never disappoint when it comes to new music, and for this week's Enlightened Listening, I've honed in on a couple albums, and the latest Afterlife EP, alongside a handful of fantastic singles. Rudimental - Toast To Our Differences
Massive album from the masters. More features than you can count, including Jess Glynne, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Maverick Sabre, and more. The kind of quality and range you can expect from one of the world's best outfits. Some easy listening poppy bits with its share of heavier, DnB stompers.

BOT - BOT New World
Serious callbacks to his crazy Crookers days with weird, often times trippy deliveries. Colourful, vibrant and transportive techno. If this means we're coming back to this style, I'm game.

Fideles - Endless Sacrifice
I cannot get enough of Afterlife at the moment, and while I would've loved to have got my hands on some of the IDs in Tale Of Us's Voyage mix, this is certainly satisfying. At times overpowering and others spine-tingling, each track has an engulfing energy that, like BOT above, takes you places.

Sheridan Grout & GXD - Dam
Was not expecting this kind of banger, but I am most certainly here for it. Reminds me of one of my favourite mixes of all time, Cosmic Gate's 2011 Essential Mix. Beyond brilliant, absolutely euphoric!

Ducky - Day Zero
Lyrically and sonically punchy. Captures the same kind of energy as early Porter Robinson/San Holo.

QUIX - Stronger (ft. Elanese)
QUIX keeps innovating and moving the bar, keeping not just us listeners on our toes but his peers too. The consummate quality he always brings is astounding, and while we may already know that, it's hard not to get blown away by the drums and brass in the second drop. Wow, just wow.

Rusko - Squeeze (Burnin)
The world is a better place with Rusko pumping out beats, and that's exactly what he did with this one: pump. Fat af, this simple stunner is sure to get rinsed out all summer long, in fact it might just speed summer along, and I don't think anyone's complaining about that...

Haus Of Panda - Kick It
I don't know what I like more: 1) that Haus Of Panda's been dropping fire like this with incredible regularity for over a year now, or 2) that he seemingly raises the bar with each release. Certainly seems as though speed house is here to stay!

Dr. Fresh x BIJOU - Gangsta Party
The masters of menacing g-house combine for a couple chest rattlers. Not for the faint of heart, these are sure to do damage on the dance-floor.

Enlightened Listening for January 18

Something, something, new year, new music. Yeah yeah, these intros can be formulaic and really, do you even bother to read them? It's about the music, which you'll find below. This week's Enlightened Listening has a couple killer remixes, the first release from Dr. Fresch's new label, and fire EPs from both Aylen and Masayoshi Iimori. Tycho - Epoch (Luttrell Remix)
Your new alarm/wake up call. You can see the sun bursting over the horizon and feel its warmth. The already beautiful original gets a top notch touch up from one of techno's melodic masters.

Mark Ronson ft. Miley Cyrus - Nothing Breaks Like A Heart (Martin Solveig Remix)
The remixes just keep coming, only further showing the strength of the original. Solveig pairs his production with Cyrus' voice brilliantly, letting each lead, and the whole thing grow organically.

Bob Sinclar - Electrico Romantico (ft. Robbie Williams)
The longevity of Sinclar is stunning, and so is this. Poppy, uplifting and funky. I think this is my favourite track on this list.

Mishap - Motions
The first in a long run of bangers in this list. A really strong example of the hybrid nature of bass driven tracks we're seeing these days. Dubstep, trap and do I hear some Pink Floyd "On The Run"?

Noizu - Dance
Rolling raucousness, acidic punches and dark dirty vibes. Noizu remains one to watch; whether it be on CONFESSION, OWSLA, or BlackBook like this, he always brings bangers.

Aylen - Routines
Always on top of the sound design game, Aylen seems to have made XXL the home for his weird, and wickedly effective house tracks. Both tracks are weapons, but in this case I'm more for the a-side.

London Elektricity - Funkopolis
I still remember the first time I heard London Elektricity, and while I can't say any of his productions have captured my attention the way "All Hell Is Breaking Loose" did a decade ago, this comes close. These two share that same kind of cool, almost soundtrack style delivery. Funky and full of energy.

Various Artists - The Remedy Volume 1
You cannot go wrong with 1) anything Dr. Fresch touches or 2) a compilation that includes the likes of BIJOU, Tony Romera, Gerry Gonza and JAXX DA FISHWORKS. If g- and bass-house are your things, best keep your eyes and ears locked on The Prescriptions Records.

Masayoshi Iimori - Euphoria
While Aylen and Iimori work in different genres, I cannot help but see similarities in both the quality and wildness of their productions. Both are liable to batter your brains with any given release, and certainly that holds true with this three track tumult. It'll surely leave your head spinning and your body moving. If you're still on the fence, let me say that "FMW" gives me a Boys Noize vibe and what could be wrong with that?

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Frustra - Acid Vision (ft. RIFFA)

Friend of the show Frustra continues to craft heavy hitting house numbers. As we've heard before his productions often hearken back to an earlier time in electronic, whether it be french touch, bloghaus or in this case, acid. The aptly titled "Acid Vision," which dropped free Friday, combines much of what makes Frustra's sound so strong and full. Featuring Brooklyn's RIFFA, it has an incredible oomph in the drums, awesome atmosphere, perfectly punctuating samples and and acid drop that will leave you bending over backwards on the dance-floor. There's also a strong sampling of trap, DnB, and even a touch of trance. Destructo - Loaded (ft. Yo Gotti)

There's a comment under this track saying "finally g-house is back." EH? Where did it go? It feels like Dr. Fresch has been delivering the goods for a least a couple years now (as recently as yesterday), and I've covered many other upstarts on this blog. There's also no denying that Destructo has been on the leading edge of this G-House 'revival,' if that is even a thing. That being said, this track, "Loaded," is sure to bring more unenlightened listeners into the G-House fold. Not many artists bring as much weight as Destructo. And I don't just mean figuratively as in clout, but also weight, as in a sizable bass. The ominous gritty boom starts low, but builds up to an unavoidable impact, transforming Yo Gotti's vocal character into a vicious goliath. The themes of braggadocio and intimidation run rampant through both the blistering bass and vainglorious vocals. "Loaded" is the latest example of the truly top notch production ability of Destructo, and ought to be included in any bass house DJ's repertoire.

Dr. Fresch has been busy. Just two weeks ago he dropped another godly G-House bootleg, in the form of A$AP Ferg's "Plain Jane," and earlier this week I wrote about his Bloghaus episode of The Prescription. Now he's teamed up with NuKid for a potent original production, "151." Like most of what we've come to expect from the good doctor, this track is overly ominous, dropping an unavoidable weight on unsuspecting listeners. Claustrophobes be warned, this one closes in on you quickly, because in spite of its unsightly heft, it's actually quite nimble. The drum work deftly delivers this diabolical dance groove that flows as freely as a noxious gas. Dr. Fresch - The Prescription 30: Bloghaus with Wongo

Yesterday Dr. Fresch dropped the 30th edition of his popular mix series, The Prescription. In honour of this milestone, he upped the dosage to two full hours and invited Wongo to help him spin some salacious bloghaus. As you might expect, it is all kinds of sick, wicked and nasty beats and bangers. Both hours feature some of the most respected names of this egregious electro era, and truly some of the most raucous remixes, fire flips and audacious originals.

Right from the get go we're greeted with one of my favourites, Jack Beats and their "Get Down." The next dozen or so tracks turn to more of the mainstays of the scene with SebastiAn, Mr. Oizo, Crookers, and the genius that is Fake Blood. Those names reappear in Wongo's mix while Hervé and Switch make multiple entries as well. With "Marina Gasolina," "Mars," "Erotic Discourse" and "Hustler" all appearing, there's no questioning the quality of choices for a true bloghaus set. Dr. Fresch - Roll It Up

I've been supporting Dr. Fresch here for quite some time now, and always jump at the opportunity to showcase more of his magic whenever I get the chance. Thankfully today is one of those days as the man has just released a "Funky Swervin Booty Ghetto Tech" track called "Roll It Up."
If you've been to or heard one of his sets this summer you've probably already heard it yourself, but now you can make it your own for free via Hive, here. While it's always been somewhat difficult to categorize Dr. Fresch's productions (most often people go to G-House), but this one takes that even further. It's generally house at its core, but it almost bounces back and forth between Deep and G-House vibes. With the additional influences from UK Bassline this one really earns its name.

The way "Roll It Up" is delivered feels almost like its from a classic cartoon in which physics are defied as a character is turned into a cigarette and smoked. Actually, now that I write that I'm struck with the vision of a certain video, one that I'm hoping someone will overdub and make a music video out of.

As the good doctor says in his description, this is a "fun, banging club track," and I couldn't agree more. It's the perfect combination of noxious nostalgia and banging bass house that begs clubbers to kill it on the dancefloor with their most fire footwork. Be sure to pack this powerhouse into your pill box.

Destructo & Volac - What I Got

Russian duo Volac have teamed up with don of west coast deepness, Destructo to create an edgy, grind it out, house number that further propels the combination of rap and hip-hop vocals with deep bass house grooves. Destructo has been cultivating this style for the last couple years, along with the likes of Dr. Fresch and Night Bass Records. "What I Got" is yet a further example of the quality that can come out this pairing of slick, intimidating vocals and stormy, ominous production. It almost has a bit of a callback to bloghaus, in its rough sound design, built around gritty vocals, à la "Beeper" or "Hustler."

Certainly the scene at large has changed, as well as the expectations of the particular sounds and their delivery, but if we were to hear "What I Got" 10 years ago, I imagine it would fit in fairly well. Perhaps the biggest differences between this and a decade prior, is its slightly more refined digital sound design, and its dependence on deeper drums to drive the groove. "What I Got" succeeds in combining scratching effects, an ever growing atmosphere of intimidation, and a surefire shuffling groove. It commands attention while not being overly needy, it just bumps along doing its thing. Whether two hours or 10 years old, "What I Got" is a potent production, that I'm sure will garner a lot of club play. Pick up what Destructo and Volac got, for free via The Artist Union, here.

Top 100 Tracks of 2016: 100 - 67

Starting today through Friday, I'll be revealing my list of the top 100 tracks of 2016. The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it's important to preface this list with my methodology. I thought long and hard about this list, what and who I should include, where each track should fall, and how to go about doing that. Should I include multiple tracks from one artist? Am I trying to make a point/statement with my placement of each track? How do I deal with the recency bias, and the counter-effect of that on older tracks? The reality is, this blog is mine and mine alone. It is one man's opinions and despite my claims, that these are the "top" or "best" tracks, they are more truthfully my favourite, and what I believe to be tracks/artists that deserve further praise. I did not conduct any surveys, base the ranking on plays or popularity, but rather I went with my heart.

As you'll see I did include multiple tracks from my favourite artists, as they are, at least in my mind, deserving. You'll also notice a hell of a lot of future bass tracks, as is only appropriate for 2016. I also tried to include a variety of other genres, but it will be clear what my tastes, and therefore favourite genres are. However, I certainly feel like this list ended up hosting very little "club" music, despite spending countless hour of 2016 in the clubs. That being said there are dozens of worthy tracks that I either forgot or excluded. Finally, I'll be posting a soundcloud playlist at the bottom of each post, as best I can, assuming each track is still online. So here we go with the first 34 tracks.

#100: Photay - Trophy
(As featured on EFYE) I had to choose one track from Photay's Sadie EP and as I wrote previously, "Trophy" is bold and beautiful. It's the kind of experimental track that I cannot place into a single genre, save for the catch all category of 2016, future bass. The synth work is brilliant and full of feels. And as you'll see, the progression and movement it boasts is the key to many of the tracks on this list.

#99: Cowboy Rhythmbox - Mécanique Sauvage
This techno joint takes be back to the days when the likes of Gesaffelstein, Justice and the classic Boys Noize and Erol Alkan's collabs dominated my playlists, so it's fitting that it was released on Phantasy Sound. The genius of "Mécanique Sauvage" is its raw hammering style, contrasted beautifully by subtle tweaks and progression. This would absolutely destroy a club.

#98: Terror Danjah - All I Need (ft. Dot Rotten)
I got scared for a second when I saw that this song was on soundcloud 3 years ago! However, it still qualifies for this list as it was only released in August of this year. This is one of the deeper more beautiful tracks on this list. Terror lays down a brilliant beat and Dot displays his vocal prowess in more ways that one. His flow is fire and his words will have you wiping away tears.

#97: Bob Moses - Like It Or Not (Joris Voorn Remix)
(As featured on EFYE) Of the Bob Moses remixes that could have fallen on this list, I decided to go with the Voorn version because of its truly epic nature. The journey Joris takes us on is absolutely breathtaking, it gives the feeling of flying with its soaring synths. At the same time it dives to an unknown abyss, with its dark, almost alarming, bass throbs. Buckle up for the brilliance of Joris Voorn.

#96: Solid Groove & Sinden - Din Da Da (Yolanda Be Cool Re-Jiggle)
This is another one of those tracks that take me back to the "good old days," specifically 2006/7 when the original was first released. I first heard this when RYME played it this summer, ushering in one of my most stanky, screw faces. On a proper system you'll be making the same oo's and ah's as the vocalist, thanks to the nonstop bouncy bass. This is a confirmed club killer.

#95: FrankJavCee - Pop Song (ft. Marionismagical)
(As featured on EFYE) I couldn't do this list without including this brilliant indictment of pop music, as you'll see there aren't many, if any, pop songs on this list. Not that there's anything wrong with them. And that's exactly what this song is about, how can you hate on pop music when you make an awesome pop song. Music is about enjoyment, and I thoroughly enjoy this and all tracks on this list.

The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up (Bloodtone Remix)

The Prodigy (which in retrospect is an incredibly fitting name) and their legendary track "Smack My Bitch Up" just got a face-melting, face-lift from LA based producer, Bloodtone. The original, big, break-beat laden, electro track has been converted into a dark, hard house number, that is as filthy and foul as the controversial title. Bloodtone said the original "embodies everything that I think dance music should be," and I fully agree. Furthermore, I believe this rework is perfectly suited for the version of house that is most prevalent today; I can easily envision the likes of Drezo, Hunter Siegel, Dr. Fresch or AC Slater, dropping this to great avail. The bass transforms the subwoofer into a giant's stomping footsteps, ominously tromping towards you. This imagery is only intensified, as the vocals in the middle section scream satanic ritual, calling upon the abhorrent monster to rise and wreak havok. Like the ant in the artwork, Bloodtone's remix easily crawls under the skin, irritating and shaking listeners to the very core. He succeeds at the difficult task of remixing a classic; he does not render it unrecognizable nor does he make mere tweaks. It is original. A thoughtful, carefully done rework of a track that you can clearly tell is close to his heart. This dark house remix can be yours for free, via the artist union here.
