Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Weekend Warmup

The beauty of this city is that the party never stops. After showcasing several events last week in what I thought was a special circumstance thanks to St. Patrick's Day, there's just as many great shows this weekend. Tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump will help you get warmed up for the weekend ahead with music from these artists and more of the best new tunes from across the country. Whereas last week hit hard with house, and there's still some of it tonight, the focus shifts more towards a club feel. There's funk and groove, a ton of trap, future bass and wave, and a strong sampling of DnB and dubstep. STFU on Diplo and Friends

I've been supporting Zak and Alex (aka STFU) both on this blog and on Bump In The Hump, and while a play on my radio show is something, it does not compare to getting a guest mix on Diplo and Friends. The dynamic duo have just uploaded their April mix to their soundcloud for streaming anytime. It's no wonder Get Right Records (who STFU's "Find That Girl" was released under) reposted and led me to the mix, because STFU is delivering some of the most twerk worthy music available at the moment. Of course Get Right Records is headed by Benzi, who is half of TWRK, and if you're like me, you've been waiting for another one of their incredible, exclusive-laden mixes, STFU have filled that void.

According to 1001 Tracklists, they've filled their hour slot with a mind-blowing 54 tracks. This shows off not just their incredible taste, with tracks ranging from Boombox Cartel to Bruno Mars, but to jam all that action in that span shows serious skill in mixing. While we could be satisfied to stare in awe of the above, the best part of this mix is the insight into all of the productions Zak and Alex currently have in their collection. An astounding 31/54 tracks are credited to STFU. Whether it's one of their killer crafted mashups, exclusive remixes, forthcoming originals or even their cover of "Closer," there's no doubt this is their coming out party.

Soon enough you won't be able to go to any club or listen to any mix without having STFU slap you in the face. I for one know I'll be coming back to this mix with frequency, at least until more of their originals are released, but even after to bask in their brilliant and blazing fast mixing skills.

JRND & VMK - Make Dem (ft. Kédo Rebelle)

Fresh from Soundcloud labels Lowly Palace and FilthyDrops, comes a double Dutch collaboration between JRND and VMK. "Make Dem" features some live instrumentation from plucked strings, to the powerful horns the play at the forefront of the track. I can't help but draw comparisons to NGHTMRE and Boombox Cartel's "Aftershock," and while that might be a lofty resemblance, they both emote incredible energy and emotion. The groove of "Make Dem" is simply striking, following the direction of vocalist Kédo Rebelle's lyrics. I can easily foresee this track as a welcome addition and perhaps secret weapon (though not for long), for dozens of future bass DJs as well as becoming that go-to 'fire me up' track, that racks up play after play in your iTunes. Louis The Child ft. K. Flay - It's Strange (SoySauce Remix)

Friday marked the release of the epic 20 track remix EP of Louis The Child's track with K. Flay, "It's Strange." With mixes from Boombox Cartel, CRNKN & The Knocks, among others, it was SoySauce's mix with it's creeping strings, recalling the Goosebumps theme, that stood out the most.

I first came across SoySauce late in 2014 when I heard their remix of Sir Sly's "You Haunt Me," so competently produced, it was the track I used to test out headphones when buying them that Black Friday. It's that strength of production with floating and playful plucked strings on top of bumping bass drums, complete with just the right amount of atmospheric synth work, that sets this mix apart from the others. It's subtle yet sultry, never offering too much or too little, finding the perfect balance of bass and beauty; those strings pulling at our defenseless hearts, evoking a flood of emotions. Pick up the SoySauce flip along with the other 19 remixes, with all of the proceeds going towards the charity, Kiva.

Baauer w/ Internet Daughter B2B Eytan Tobin

With the year ending The Hoxton had few opportunities left to go out in style, but when bad boy Baauer took over Friday. He certainly brought his unique flair, as he dropped one of, if not, the best set of the year doing everything at an incredibly high level; whether it was his hype work on the mic, constant mixing, impeccable track selection or his physical involvement in the music. The night was an all around success as locals Internet Daughter and Eytan Tobin went back to back for two hours doing a brilliant job getting the crowd ready for a masterful performance. I do however have one gripe before I get to breaking down the sets (the next paragraph, so skip it if you like for videos and links to tracks played).

Upon arriving I was greeted by two Heineken girls giving away plastic light-up wristbands; nice enough, who doesn't like free swag? Before I could even get to the bar I noticed my wristband went dark, and yes it had already died, oh well I'm not one for glow sticks or flashing lights anyway. Back at the bar, I asked for my usual tall can of Coors Banquet, to which the bartender replied "It's a Heineken night," okay, I'll get a tall can of that, "Nope." Well, do you have any tall cans? "Nope." Well, what DO you have? "Only Heineken." Fine I guess I'll have one. "$8, please." Now, the reason I always get tall cans is two fold, one, it's the best bang for your buck, and two, I have to go back to the bar less often. These kinds of corporate sponsored buyouts have to stop, there's no way it gets the company any good will, I'd think it's exactly the opposite. Sure if you usually drink Heineken you're happy but for everyone else who is now forced to drink it, I'd imagine they'd be at best mildly perturbed and at worst totally boycott Heineken. I know I'm not happy about it and certainly won't be rushing to get a Heineken again. People want and deserve choices, monopolies are never alright, even the board game is of questionable merit.

New Grandtheft Mix For Diplo & Friends

Last night while in line waiting to get into The Hoxton to see Cyril Hahn, I was scrolling through twitter and saw this weird tweet. Playing IDs (or unnamed work in progress tracks) isn't necessarily odd, but this one struck me, mostly because of the youtube video it's linked to, being an only 42 second clip.

But then I realized it wasn't from just any old BBC show, it was from Grandtheft's mix for Diplo & Friends. I'm a big fan of the show, both because of the wide range of upcoming talents that deliver monster mixes but also the incredible number of brand new and unreleased content those talents drop. Grandtheft's mixes are never to be slept on as he always comes through with brilliance, this one certainly does that, but more excitingly there is a crazy number of new and unreleased tracks from Keys N Krates, Autoerotique and Hunter Siegel, and of course a significant number of exclusives from Grandtheft himself. Diplo & Sleepy Tom - "Be Right There" Remixes

Fridays in the electronic music world is basically heaven on earth. There's nothing better than scrolling through your email and facebook, twitter, soundcloud feeds to find and pick up so many brand new releases. This week seems to have been especially jam packed with new releases from a 6 track remix package of Diplo and Sleepy Tom's "Be Right There," to a new collab between Botnek and I See MONSTAS "Deeper Love," a 6 track original EP from Cosmo's Midnight "Moments," and 15 track remix album from The Kooks, "Hello, What's Your Name?" featuring Jack Beats, Kove, Kideko and more.
