Full, Uncut Interview with OAKS

Last weekend I welcomed OAKS to the Radio Humber studios for a chat ahead of his episode of My Mixtape which airs this Saturday, November 24th at 11 PM EST. This is that conversation in full.

We discuss his introduction to electronic music; his love for weird, underground house,; the emergence of 'underground' labels in Dirtybird and Box Of Cats; the slow bleed of electronic music into the pop sphere; the new releases he's sitting on; and of course his episode of My Mixtape, which aside from Botnek is entirely made up of Toronto artists. Bump In The Hump: November 21 (Season 8, Episode 11)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Apashe x Cherry Lena - Feeling Good

John De Buck aka Apashe has had a big year. His first offering, the wild 3 track Requiem EP kept us satisfied until he tapped one of its vocalists in Black Prez for "Do It" in September. Both of those releases aside, this week may be Apashe's biggest of the year. Today he drops the video for "Majesty" with Wasiu (see here), which follows the killer cover/remix of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" alongside fellow Montreal talent in Cherry Lena. Obviously dark and destructive, the contrast in the music and vocals is what makes this take so strong. Like Requiem it's a little different from your normal fare, but the big bounding trap strides give a weightless feel much like the titular sensation of "Feeling Good." Catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, and pick it up from your favourite retailer here.Tonight's episode is truly jam packed with many of my favourite artists of the year and some of the best releases including a number of exceptional EPs from Chali 2na, Wizard Of, Lingopolus, Just John x Dom Dias, Ricco Harver, Jacques Greene and others. That selection alone should be a good indication of how wide the sounds range tonight. Closing the episode is a clip of my conversation with OAKS, ahead of his episode of My Mixtape this Saturday at 11 PM EST. Catch it all live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber or cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud here.

Top 100 Tracks of 2017: 75-51

Continuation of the list started yesterday: from 100-76, which also includes my disclaimer/preamble. Soundcloud playlist here and at the bottom.

#75: WRLD - Everything (ft. Ashdown)
One of only two DnB tracks on this list. It is delightful and spectacular sci-fi fun. The groove and its subsequent glitches are genius. It reminds me of Fred V & Grafix, which is saying something, and boy oh boy could I get into a set of this kind of liquid lusciousness.

#74: Falcons - Want Your Body
I can't count how many times I've heard this track, yet I still feel like it eludes my ability to properly characterize its quality. It's kind of sneaky, yet once it kicks in there's no avoiding its allure. The drum work is absolutely ingenious, propelling the production into a stratosphere unrivaled by any other tracks released this year. It is original and excellent, truly in a class of its own, but that's standard for Falcons.

#73: Ayo - Name Game
(As featured on EFYE) When a track doesn't need quality speakers to sound massive you know you've got something special. The bass Ayo's dropped here is quite simply the biggest thing in this whole list. In fact I'm fairly certain that if you play this on a big system, a hole in the time-space continuum is ripped open. Heed his advice and "play that shit again" and again and again.

#72: OAKS - Vibrations
Another almost old-school style track that takes me back to my early days exploring electronic music. It's got a great club churning groove that plays so perfectly with the synths and overall atmosphere. It's both wild yet some how still tempered in its tech house delivery. I swear I hadn't realized it until I played it live on Bump In The Hump, but I stand by my comparison to Boy 8-Bit, my favourite electronic artist.

#71: Jaxx Da Fishworks - Round Em Up
The typically house heavy BADLQQK crew had a huge year, and while there were several standouts, (particularly their RQQKIES) it was actually this breaks track that most caught my attention. Of course drums are the most important aspect of breaks, and boy do they ever do damage here. It's wobbly, warped and wicked good fun. And it's not just BADLQQK who had a big year, expect to see another track from Jaxx work its way into this list.

#70: Bicep - Aura
(As featured on EFYE) The unreleased Bicep track finally got its release after more than a year of magical teasing, and while it'll be remembered by most as a delirium-inducing demo, there's little better than having a full official release to play when and where we want. While I'll always be a sucker for their remix of "Tears I Can Afford," this may be Bicep at their best, navigating the line between a knock you off your feet, wall of sound and a feather-like tickling of your senses. Simply sublime.

Bump In The Hump Season Seven

As you may already know, Bump In The Hump is back for it's seventh season, but not only that, it's expanded to two full hours of new Canadian productions. With that comes a new logo (above), a new intro, and new promos. As a bit of a teaser, I've uploaded the intro and a few of the promos (two of which were produced by friend of the show Kenan Habibovic). The intro is always a fun piece of production and showcases some of the best tracks from the previous season as well as some cheeky samples. There's A-Trak, Chromeo, Thook, SIM, Tiga, Lambo, Loud Luxury, OAKS and Marco Marz.Catch the Bump In The Hump premiere tomorrow night from 6-8 PM EDT on Radio Humber, live here.

Bump In The Hump: August 9 (Season 6, Episode 15)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: ASHE - Space Between (ft. Amy Kirkpatrick)

The wave of new music from Toronto and across the country continues to amaze me. This week I'm proud to bring both the first Radio Humber appearance, and first single from ASHE and his Whale Bones EP. "Space Between," featuring Amy Kirkpatrick, promises to be the first of many upcoming releases in this new progressive house turn for ASHE. It's powerful and emotive through the vocals and otherwise; truly exemplifying its title, opening up an immense rift. Careful not to fall its infinite abyss!Bump In The Hump this week is pure house heaven, I've found so much new music that there's more than enough for an hour entirely of made up of house. There's everything from big room, deep, progressive, to tech and other houses. No need for a contractor. Points of particular interest include: Loud Luxury fresh off playing Veld this weekend, both Snails and Botnek with new bangers, and friends of the show Maddmon, Leterna and OAKS. Oh and how about new Tiga? Perfect.

Finally the hour wraps up with my chat with Jeff and Mark of The NightOwls before their episode of My Mixtape goes live, Friday August 11th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Stream Bump In The Hump live (here) from 6-7 PM EDT tonight, and after the fact on Mixcloud.
