The Magician - Magic Tape 102

The Magician launched us into June with another lush episode of his marvellous Magic Tape mix series. Like all previous editions, this new hour features a variety of funky disco house joints with a focus on new and forthcoming music. Also, just like its predecessor Magic Tape 101, the first twenty minutes are pure bliss. No matter my mood, I cannot bring myself to skip these sublime starts. In fact, these two most recent mixes have supplied some of my favourite tunes in the last month or two (see: the Perel remix of "See You Again," Dorothys Fortress' fabulous "Lucha Libre," and Krystal Klear's intoxicating "Piano Banana.") But, back to Magic Tape 102. The opening track, the only ID left, has a really familiar feeling. And here's where I get to the fun speculation as I have a sneaking suspicion (more likely just misguided hope) that this is new music from Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell, aka The 2 Bears. Musically, lyrically and thematically, it screams The 2 Bears, and I couldn't be happier if that is the case. However, and serendipitously punny, it could also be a new warner case production. Again, this would be a fit in his oeuvre, and we know he's been part of Magic Tapes and The Magician's Potion Records in the past. That said, there is no proper evidence either way as to whether this is The 2 Bears, warner case, or someone else entirely. Regardless, it's a fun, funky start to another exceptional edition of the Magic Tape series. Get down to it below and check out the largely complete (and correct) tracklist here.

Enlightened Listening for March 26

Another week down means another edition of Enlightened Listening. While I've taken a bit of a writing hiatus, that doesn't mean I've stopped listening to music, thankfully so, as this week's haul features more than 100 tracks and eight hours of music.

There's a ton of DnB, starting with perhaps my most anticipated release of the year (one I've been waiting nearly a year for), Plantium Breaks' brilliant and energizing affair Everything. They're followed by another exceptional single from Low:r, who is in turn followed by albums from Hospital, with their stacked H25PITAL compilation, and Tyr Kohout, who delivers a dynamic debut.

Mixing things up a bit, Night Bass brings some bright new talent to their roster with Hans Glader's groovy Lumen EP. Even more groovy and electrifying, Proc Fiskal's Lothian Buses will have you bristling with bass, the same way Overmono's latest "Pieces Of 8" will have you in awe. And from awe-inspiring to yawn-inducing (in a good way), we get two downtempo/chill albums from Eli Escobar and Zeds Dead.

Starting anew, the middle fifth of this week's playlist moves through progressive and melodic house, including Grigoré on This Never Happened and two EPs from FiveP, of which Quantum most captured my attention. Another highlight arises shortly thereafter as five more tremendous talents remix BRONSON. And here I have to wonder about the TSHA remix, which shares an obscene amount of the same DNA as her Gabrielle Aplin-led original "Change." I love that track, but it's a bit strange seeing it used here as a remix, no? Anyway, we're in for a whole bunch of love and life in the final seven releases...

A trio of touching originals opens this final section as Franky Wah, Dombresky and Moullinex each work with exceptional vocalists (LOWES, Camden Cox and Selma Uamusse, respectively), delivering diverse yet, equally awesome productions. Following immediately after is our final remix of the playlist, pitting legendary MGMT against legendary Metronomy. And yes, the result is as cool as you'd expect. Now, before we weep to Kele (Okereke of Bloc Party fame) and "Smalltown Boy," we're treated to a couple life-giving originals from The Magician x Wuh Oh and Dimitri From Paris x Fiorious. While the former is more of your typical 'EDM' fare, the latter is as lush and 'organic' as it gets.

Enlightened Listening for January 15

If this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is any indication, 2021 is sure to be an incredible year for music. Here we have 20 new releases running 3 hr 33 min (repeating of course). But seriously, this playlist is overflowing with quality through its sensational singles and resplendent remixes. While I'm recommending each of these releases, there are a few special ones I need to note.

First, there's the magical compilation from All Day I Dream, then TSHA's tear continues with her remix of KUU. Another rockin' remix follows shortly thereafter as Marsh brings some mayhem to "Eternal Summer." And I guess remixes are the theme of the week as the trio of Metronomy, Autechre and Zach Witness take on Myd, SOPHIE and Armand Van Helden, respectively. Each incredible in their own right, these are three of the most unique and inspired remixes I've come across in months. Enlightened Listening for November 6

We've made it through another week, and what a week it was, so let's celebrate with some new music.

This week's edition of Enlightened Listening opens with ATTLAS' second album of the year, an even more sublime offering than his usual ethereal excellence. It's not the only awesome album either as the ageless Kylie Minogue offers up an absolute delight in DISCO. Staying with longer releases, This Never Happened continues its unbelievable run of quality as Deeparture delivers an incredible EP, just as Overmono complete their inspired Everything U Need with two more top-notch tracks. Closing the book on EPs, HERO's CLUB NOWHERE is another stunner that, like CRY BABY and Dirty Work, will keep me coming back for weeks, if not months.

Now for the singles: Moullinex delivers sensuous pleasure in "Ven," Tiga turns Elderbrook's "Back To My Bed" into an infectious, uplifting roller, The Magician goes Italo disco on Mercer's uber-catchy "Lemonade," The Reflex brings "Sweet Freedom" closer to Michael McDonald's original, KUU deliver a chill second single, KAS:ST does dark and dismal with "VTOPIA," and we get the first taste of what promises to be a killer collaborative project from Frustra and Maddmon in "Eternal Wake."

Four Unreleased Tracks I'm Still Waiting For...

As the summer has come and gone, four tracks have found themselves still at the front of my mind as I wait for their eventual release. In early July we got a taste of the power pairing of Tiga and Hudson Mohawke by way of their Hardcore Romance hit "Love Minus Zero." Along with that a mix for Annie Mac, which featured a few more of their collaborations "Time To Time" and "Tear Down The Walls." The former also appeared in Martyn Bootyspoon's mix for Crack Magazine, and I must say I can neither get enough of the track itself nor its placement in the mix. Find it below starting just before the hour twenty-nine mark and be sure to stick around as the subsequent synth-led tracks are equally sublime.

The Magician - Magic Tape 97

Finally, the first new edition of the vaunted Magic Tape mix series since COVID-19 captured the world's attention in early March. The Magician is back with an hour made up almost exclusively of new and forthcoming material.

Opening up this new set is the simply sensational Chemical Brothers cut "Catch Me I'm Falling" from No Geography. It is followed by a beautiful, yet unidentified scintillating synth number which has an undeniably familiar feel, yet I can't quite put my finger on who either the vocalist or producer is. As the mix continues to pick up steam we get brand new and forthcoming releases from Mohawk & The Kid and Myd (respectively) before The Magician's "You And Me" appears to receive a sublime, striding remix from another yet unidentified source.

This same formula of new followed by forthcoming tunes is replicated as Boys Noize's Defected affair "Mvinline" is followed by a trio of yet unreleased offerings from Theo Kottis and Mozambo, with the former absolutely rocking resplendent. In terms of overall trajectory this is where the mix really peaks as both Tchami's "Buenos Aires" and Alex Preston & Rion S' "Love Somebody" deliver incredibly infectious energy. Finally, The Magician crafts a killer come-down with Moullinex's remix of Poolside "Sunrise Strategies" and Justice's remix of Frank Ocean "Dear April." Enlightened Listening for May 15

Another week has passed and so it's time for another edition of Enlightened Listening. I'm gonna keep things relatively short and sweet this week, so read into the playlist in the following paragraphs or just listen at your leisure below. Have a great weekend, enjoy and stay sane!

Albums from Moby and Nathan Micay open the playlist, each ingenious in their own right. A couple EP pairings follow as Anjunadeep and Speicher deliver the kind of quality one can expect from the legendary labels. Mind Against then break the ice on a number of forthcoming remixes of Dominik Eulberg's Mannigfaltig. A quartet of larger EPs follow that remix as the playlist straddles the house/techno boundary. My favourite from each of the four, respectively: "Maranta," "Echoes From Beyond," "Red South" and  "Les Gens."

The back half of the playlist opens with the 3rd version of what was Hunter Siegel's house hit "Waiting Up," now updated to better fit HNTR's techno turn. Another ingenious revision follows that as Four Tet puts his inimitable touch, and a peak time touch at that, on Caribou's brilliant "Never Come Back." The whole playlist turns on its head with the next track, "Arch Enemy" from the fabulous Everything Everything. Even funkier, the final three releases from The Phenomenal Handclap Band (with an incredible album), Pat Lok and The Magician will have you dancing all the way through the weekend.

Belgian tastemaker The Magician never fails when it comes to his prolific Magic Tape mix series. Each and every time he manages to combine the freshest funk and soulful house tracks. And of course this 94th edition is no different. In just the first four tracks alone, two have been released in November and another, Tensnake's "Rules," is still forthcoming. The quality and fresh nature of the track selection is one thing, but being able to combine it as seamlessly as The Magician does is the true mark of quality.

Since the weather has turned I've felt an urge to play video games, especially when I listen to a good mix. This has been something that occurs to me when I revisit old mixes, as I have been doing lately with Tiga's weekly My Name Is Tiga upload. There are a number of old mixes that I go back to time and time again and always associate with some of my favourite times in university playing Lord Of The Rings Online for hours on end. And I truly believe there is something special about the combination of being focused on playing something while still having enough brain power left to enjoy a mix. It doesn't matter if the mix is new or old, fast or slow, heavy or easy-going, or even whether it has voice over - it just moves along brilliantly as you play. All of this is to say that, serendipitously a childhood friend reached out to me today, sharing a game he created (try it here), and of course I needed something to listen to while giving it a go.

Enter The Magician and the smooth moves of Magic Tape 94. Each worked on the other making both more enjoyable. Early on I suffered many defeats, but as the music kept getting better I couldn't just quit, I had to keep grooving. So maybe you can give yourself the same magical feeling by diving into a game and throwing this mix on. Enlightened Listening for June 9

This week's Enlightened Listening features a foursome of dance ready EPs, two dope disco singles and a trio of turnt up bass house numbers. We start with the wandering spirit of Sébastien Léger in his Skadi EP which features two equally epic magic and meandering singles along with a remix from Tim Green that fits the mood perfectly. Next up KiNK works with wife Rachel Row for the sensational "To Love You," which truly illustrates Piano Power, whereas the following two tracks are slightly more power than piano, but remain equally alluring. After that come four takes on the incredible "In My Arms," mostly of the more downtempo, chill variety save for Qubiko's club friendly force.

Turning to singles now, Dimitri From Paris and Cotonete reunite to remix the Dimitri produced Izo FitzRoy track "I Want Magic." Electric and magical, it features the fun and playfulness that this pairing always offers. Staying with heavenly horns and divine disco, Daphni has put his touch on Paradise's 1981 track "Sizzling Hot" which leads an EP due out July 19th. Moving laterally, we get a trio of remixes of The Magician's "Ready To Love," including a glitzy disco take from Mercer.

Finally we get to the fire finale of this playlist with Noizu and Eli Brown kicking things off with thumping groove number in "Inside My Head." Shift K3Y follows that up with another fantastically fiery flow which merges Night Bass and UKF in "Nightline." Closing out this collection is another unreal collaboration featuring DJ Zinc and Chris Lorenzo. The two combine for a jaw-dropping joint whose power is sure to send any dance-floor into fits. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sam Lamar - The Magician

Montreal's Sam Lamar has been consistently making moves in the dubstep scene for over two years now and is showing no sign of slowing down. This year alone he's authored a remix of Illenium, dropped an EP on Uplink Audio and is now working towards an EP with Kannibalen. "The Magician" is from that forthcoming four track EP and establishes an unholy alchemy with creepy chords reminiscent of Rezz before its disgusting dub drops amidst all kinds of unhinged effects. Its power is pervasive and while it would be good enough to tease this episode of Bump In The Hump on its own, it's also a great fit as we look ahead to Nah Mean's new episode of My Mixtape, which includes six of Sam's tracks. The Magician - Magic Tape 89

While it's not exactly the start of a new week, The Magician has blessed us with an hour of new tunes in the 89th edition of his Magic Tape series, perfect for pushing through the doldrums that is another ride around the calendar rows. Heavy on the unreleased content, even more so than usual, this mix features, at least what we believe to be, the likes of forthcoming A-Trak and The Aston Shuffle as well as recently released Mike Mago, Disclosure and The Black Madonna. While the heart of this tape is house, The Magician makes sure to offer up twists of acid, disco, funk, RnB, piano and more. It's not heavy on mixing but rather more focused on letting the beauty of each piece breathe, and boy does it feel good to let this uplifting oxygen into our lungs. While I've nearly made it through the whole tape for a second time, and a full listen is a must, I think I've pinpointed my favourite section, that being the trio of IDs between Disclosure's "Talk" VIP and A-Trak's "Work It Out," which drops Thursday on Fool's Gold. The Magician - Magic Tape 86

After authoring some of my favourite mixes last year, The Magician's Magic Tape series returns with the 86th edition today. Always a top notch mix of disco, house, and funk from both the biggest acts and rising stars, the eclectic selection is sure to satisfy as well as set off your salivary glands as we get a taste of some new creations. Of the first seven tracks, five of them are unreleased or forthcoming with the two already released "Stay The Night" from HERO and "Paris Madness" from Samaran both coming in the last month. Certainly one could drool about all of these forthcoming releases but I can't get over 1) how good the Jamie Jones remix of Bob Moses is and 2) how well it goes into Rebūke's "Along Came Polly." With another Rebūke track, from the forthcoming Dirtybird Jump Ship EP, an ID and a vibes for days finale in 700 Bliss' "Ring The Alarm" and IZNiiK "Losing U," this is yet another awesome example of the quality of The Magician and his Magic Tape series. The Magician - Magic Tape 85

If you enjoy a mix of all things funky and electronic The Magician's Magic Tape series is always worth a listen, with this latest edition a prime exemplar. Magnificently mixed, this hour long 85th iteration sees the whiz bring an incredibly keen focus on current releases alongside the awesome alchemy these tapes are known for. Most every track is released in the last month with a few still forthcoming in an A-Trak remix of "In Arms" and originals from Dom Dolla and Boston Bun (via 1001tracklists).

More than the nuts and bolts, The Magician picks tracks that fit perfectly together, combining in a powerful progression. The steps each track change signifies is part of the greater movement that he is authoring. It's all too easy to get swept up in Jengi's vital spirit in "Ice Tea" and move to an even more scintillating substance in Cavego's "Vår I Øyer." The twisted takeover of the beyond brilliant "Beulah Loves Dancing" puts takes the mix back down to earth, but boy does the dance spirit remain, as it does throughout. That three track opening is a microcosm of this Magic Tape, especially as it begins to rebuild immediately with the massively funky march of Jarami's "No Chance."

The ups and downs come and go, but all the while the big picture moves ever forward. Huge, full bangers hit in the middle of the hour as Prospa and Cousn slam the speakers. In perhaps the best move of this whole mix The Magician moves from "Juggle" to the Weiss dub of "Missing U" dragging the tape out of the dark by the light of Robyn. That is all to say the following four tracks are unreleased, ending finally with the Moon Willis remix "Hear The Music." So truly whatever your appetite, Magic Tape 85 has the funk to fill it. Michael Calfan ft. Danny Dearden - It's Wrong (The Magician Remix)

This past Friday, The Magician released his bright and bouncy, funk flip of Michael Calfan track "It's Wrong." This version from the Bruxellois DJ and producer is led by a bombastic yet buttery bass line, beneath blazing, brilliant, skyward synths and just the right amount of glitzy guitar. The groove is gorgeous, immediately filling you with a warm confidence, causing you to strut uncontrollably, in spite of Danny Dearden's lyrics detailing the danger. And this is its brilliance; like the titular love, this track is too tempting, too intoxicating to avoid. It sucks you in, spins your around and leaves you clamouring for more of this jouissance. New Mixes from Dr Packer, Erol Alkan, Late Nite Tuff Guy and The Magician

Last week I saw the legendary Late Nite Tuff Guy's name above an hour long track entitled "Soul Mix 3" and got really excited. The recording from 2009, features the likes of Barry White, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye and many more. While it's a super cool insight into the mind of LNTG, its more about selection rather than transitions and easy flowing enjoyment. That said, today's search led me to 3 other mixes that bridge that gap better, so I've decided to showcase these live sets/mixtapes both for selection and mixing quality. They're all on the funky, disco end of the spectrum so if hard hitting stuff is what you're looking for you're out of luck. However you'll surely find some favourites, new and old. So let's get started, working back towards Late Nite Tuff Guy. Stream below and grab free downloads.

The Magician - Magic Tape 82
Finger firmly on the pulse, The Magician always has the hottest commodities in his show. He's got two of the new Disclosure tracks, his own remix of The Chainsmokers and the killer collabs of SG Lewis/AlunaGeorge and A-Trak/Todd Terry. The vibes are very laid back and groovy, before things pick up in the second half with FISHER's smash "Losing It," Riton's raucous "Up & Down" followed by Angelz "Yeah Yeah." While I'm sucker for disco, this deeper darker section may be my favourite.

Dr Packer Live @ Downtown Disco [25.08.18]*
So much great stuff in here. Dr Packer's ear is extraordinary, always finding the best edits and grooves. Strings and bongo stand strong throughout, while bass riffs beckon your feet to the floor. The extended nature of this set allows for longer more subtle transitions, and like the strings these swells are oh so sweet. Of course there's a number of his own productions, while other highlights include Late Nite Tuff Guy's "Startin' Somethin'," Todd Terry's "Love Sensation" and the Deep&Disco rework of "Stomp." If you're looking for pure pleasure look no further than the final half hour.

Erol Alkan (Disco Set) @ Homo Electric [25.08.18]
While only the final hour of Erol's "disco/italo/hi-nrg" set it's better than nothing. Funky, groovy and gritty, it is Erol through and through with his penchant for powerful records. Going for the classic killer "Right On Target" early, sets the stage for more high octane heat. There's a ton of bleepy brilliance in this more electronic-tilted disco mix with the likes of "Remember" and "Cybernetic Love." Hearing this hour gives a greater appreciation for the evolution of electronic from disco to house.

Late Nite Tuff Guy - Soul Mix 3
A considerable cool-down from the above sets, but still sublime. It is the opposite end of Erol's mix, the foundation from which those artists built upon. You don't have to look far to find the love at the core of this mix, as it emanates not just through the lyrics but the music that later inspired the edits used above. It's just so incredibly powerful to hear these tracks together especially after the other mixes. Watch out for the section of Prince, Roberta Flack and Minnie Ripperton: it's too nice.

Of course Miami Music Week was top of mind the last little while and while many compilations have come and gone, The Magician's 78th edition of his Magic Tape mix series is an undeniable standout. Recorded live in the middle of Fool's Gold's takeover of 1-800-Lucky (between sets from A-Trak and MK), the hour long selection is all sorts of spellbinding sorcery. It features a handful of brilliant brand new jams including Duke Dumont's "Inhale," Peggy Gou's "It Make You Forget," and the Alex Metric/Ten Ven collab "Otic." Yes these are all familiar and fantastic tracks, and of course it features The Magician's masterful mixing mysticism, but the best bits are forthcoming releases from A-Trak & YehMe2's "Prayer Hands" (out Thursday) and Supermini's remix of Crush Club "We Dance."
