Enlightened Listening for August 28

Spanning 85 tracks and running more than five hours, this week's Enlightened Listening is absolutely massive. So much so that I dare not tackle a write-up it as I'll be here until tomorrow. Enlightened Listening for May 29

Despite taking the week off both Bump In The Hump and blogging, there's been so much fantastic music released I just had to put together a massive edition of Enlightened Listening. However the weather is calling me back outside so I won't be doing a comprehensive breakdown of the 24 releases, but rather I'll simply suggest a scroll through the playlist which is chock full of all kinds of house along with a sprinkling of fat funk, several sensational remixes and EPs, and a couple epic albums to cap it all off. Personal highlights include Jayda G, Tensnake's remix of Duke Dumont, Andhim's remix of Agoria, both sides of the Solee/Parquet Recordings EP, the whole of the On The Air EP, and Henry Saiz's "Iridescent." Enlightened Listening for December 6

It's the end of the year and everyone's busy so I'm gonna keep the write-up to a minimum for this edition of Enlightened Listening. We open with the first single from ATTLAS' forthcoming album, before turning to two epic compilations from EMERCIVE and fabric respectively. They're followed by two of my favourite artists in Jessie Ware atop Franky Wah and another new Caribou cut. Next up Purple Disco Machine tries his hand at taking on Dua Lipa's fantastic "Don't Start Now." Staying funky, Friend Within hits Toolroom for "Space Jam" and GotSome sends us some Chicago grooves with "The Message." Finally we close with an ingenious take on Joris Voorn's "Messiah." Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now (MT SOUL Remix)

As soon as I heard Dua Lipa's latest single "Don't Start Now," I was all in. It's funky fresh power pop that showcases her voice wonderfully, and just like "Electricity" last year I knew it would spawn several quality remixes. Just over a week after the original's release, Belgian bootlegger MT SOUL has offered up a smooth house remix that leans into an added keyboard foundation, giving it a gentle jazz twist.

Succeeding largely in its closeness to the original, MT SOUL has ditched much of the gritty bass riffs for a more shimmery, glistening glow that, while mixed for a fuller feel, still allows for Dua's delivery to flourish. This new bed matches Dua stride for stride playing perfectly with the vocals, especially so in the bouncy bridge and rolling choruses. Again mirroring the original, MT SOUL's production is crisp and clean, just like the quick and easy breakup Dua sings about. Enlightened Listening for November 1

After one of the largest Enlightened Listening playlists last week, we're significantly shorter this week. We focus on a handful of singles, alongside a couple EPs and remixes. Things start poppy with exceptional singles from Kiesza and Dua Lipa who both remind us of their undeniable leading lady status. Kiesza's track shines, while Dua's bristles with funky bass leading us nicely into the delightfully easy dancing TOPS track "Seven Minutes." Diving disco, George Sandler and Justin Jay spin sublime with "Know How," before Fabrikate bring out the brass with the sensational "Love Was Real."

Pete Tong and HER-O find themselves in this list for the third week in a row as "Go Crazy" gets a groovy extension. Staying with remixes, the legendary Marshall Jefferson gives a more human heart to club killer "Turn Me On." Tuff London follows that with another unstoppable house cut that is sure to keep the floor moving. After that we get our first EP of the playlist, a trio of top notch remixes of Lastlings' "Last Breath," with a standout from Adult Art Club who we heard in Lane 8's Halloween mix.

Closing the playlist out is a foursome of house cuts from three of my favourite names. First, Billy Kenny once again captures my attention with incredible sound design and an unwavering rolling groove. Noizu follows that with another inventive cut, showing further range and equally incredible sound design. Finally, Stund delivers two killer cuts. Enlightened Listening for April 12

Fridays and the new music that comes with it are life giving and this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is no different. We start more downtempo with a couple cool cuts from Gramatik and Tame Impala, before getting glitzy with Mark Ronson. Next up is Robotaki who delivers an ingenious EP in Anachronism from which we've already heard singles "Meant To Be" and "All I Can Do." Staying with geniuses, how about the highly anticipated No Geography from the legendary Chemical Brothers? While we knew that would be good, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the foursome of remixes of Dua Lipa's "Swan Song" from Alita: Battle Angel. Top choice cuts from Calibre and DJ Shadow with NastyNasty. The energy continues to rise as Riddim Commission comes through with a crisp, killer single in "Look So Cute." Next up is the always exceptional Night Bass who tap Kendoll for a fulsome five track EP in Playhouse. Rounding out the playlist is Benzi's "Whatcha Gonna Do" which is almost like a TWRK/Girl Trapz/Get Right Radio mix in a tight three minute delivery. Enjoy!

Silk City ft. Dua Lipa - Electricity (Leemz Bootleg)

Undeniably one of the most intoxicating pop productions of the last year, Silk City's Dua Lipa led Grammy winning single "Electricity" has received countless remixes including one from The Black Madonna, who hit the 34th spot in my year end countdown (here). Months after the original spark has subsided Jersey Club legend Leemz has brought his bounce and inimitable energy to the effusive "Electricity." The propulsive pressure of Leemz's lightning-in-a-bottle bootleg is immediately invigorating, sucking you in through the success of Silk City and Dua Lipa's lush delivery before becoming jacked up on a gallon of java. The drops are dizzying, almost disorienting, in their whirlwind of wild Jersey Club components, perfect for pushing any party into overdrive. It is this contrast of the sublime nature of the original and its smooth status in between drops that makes this such a rousing remix. Enlightened Listening for November 16

I often start these Enlightened Listening posts the same way, talking about Friday this, Friday that. What makes this post different is that November 16th has been marked on my calendar for many reasons. It marks the highly anticipated releases of Humans, Jacques Greene and Tiga & The Martinez Brothers. It also sees the return of both Haywyre and HERO after long absences. Joining those incredible offerings is Alex Metric's marvelous remix of "Electricity," a track he helped produce, Daktyl's dazzling take on What So Not and San Holo, and ANNA's epic twist on Jon Hopkins "Singularity." Rounding out this collection is the masterful Jean-Michel Jarre with Equinoxe Infinity. Enjoy!

Much has been made about the combination of Diplo and Mark Ronson as Silk City, and justifiably so. They're two of the world's most recognized producers, and they've capitalized on a resurgent sound in disco. Starting with "Only Can Get Better" through to their most recent and greatest commercial success "Electricity," they've pulled in some of the hottest talents: behind the scenes (Alex Metric, Nitti Gritti, Riton and others appear in the production credits), behind the mic (with Daniel Merriweather, Desiigner and Dua Lipa leading) and with remixers (Claude VonStroke and Le Sauvage so far).

Today they've added another powerhouse to the legendary list of talents around the super-group that is Silk City, with The Black Madonna taking on the aforementioned "Electricity." Putting a potent piano in the fore and letting Dua Lipa's love soaked vocals sit in this more hardened house pocket, gives an extra gravity to the already groovy production. The spark of "Electricity" still sends shivers down your back, especially so with the crackling hi-hats, as this lateral move from disco to house maintains the magic of the original.
