Best Tracks Of 2018: Honorable Mentions

It's getting to be that time of year. Seems most publications have either already unveiled their year end lists, or are at least in the process of doing so. I'll push back a bit, in that there's still good music coming out and certainly some of it deserves spots in these year end reflections. That said, I still aim to have my Top 100 Tracks of 2018 list out in 2018, along with some kind of album showcase. But since the Top 100 is still in flux (at least in terms of placement), I've found that I've got a nice 18 leftovers which deserve at least the title of Honorable Mentions. So without further ado, here they are, sorted in alphabetical order by original artist, with brief descriptions after the Soundcloud playlist/jump.

Full, Uncut Interview with Honey Beard

This past weekend I had Gaz and Tom of Honey Beard back in the Radio Humber studios. The primary focus of our conversation being their forthcoming EP Reverie, out November 24th. But of course we touch on their second episode of My Mixtape which airs this Saturday the 17th at 11 PM EST.

Otherwise we touch on the following topics: Gaz's penchant for raw, real lyrics; the 'disingenuous' nature of happy songs; the themes of sleep/dreaming, water and city throughout their catalog; hiding easter eggs in their lyrics; their continuing trend of opposing upbeat music and dark lyrics; cutting back on the amount of production and drawing the vocals into the mix on Reverie; building a Patreon for b-sides and other treats; working with Whoozl for the Reverie release party with Bon Villan and Modula (RSVP/details); and of course the setup for this new episode of My Mixtape. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Rhett & Attlas - Crater

Over the course of the year Attlas has trained my brain to expect new music from him with regularity. Seems that timer had gone off as I found myself thinking, "Jeez, I could sure go for that feeling new Attlas brings." Well thanks to Rhett's Hollow Earth, out now on mau5trap, we got that new new. "Crater" combines Rhett's robust techno builds and Attlas' always colourful and captivating cinematic arcs. At times it is wild, others entirely restrained. Sometimes shrouded in darkness, other times overflowing with warmth and light. The "Crater" in the middle of the track, and the striding egress that returns to the raucous entrance, imbues the track with an always entertaining progression. Like Tiga and Kölsch's "Still So High," it showcases the best of each artist in compelling fashion. Enjoy now below!
Catch "Crater" on Bump In The Hump tonight closing out a 30 minute run of disco, house, and techno to open the show. As always our Canadians have been cooking up a flurry of fire, with the likes of Dr. Ozi, Snails, and Sam Lamar going back to back to back. However we don't close with killer cuts, but rather synth sensations as we look ahead to Honey Beard's sophomore episode of My Mixtape, this Saturday at 11 PM EST. Supporting them not just at their November 24th Reverie EP release party at Junction City Music Hall (RSVP), Bon Villan make their Radio Humber debut courtesy Sleepycatt's remix of "When I Came Up." Interview with Honey Beard

Monday night I got the opportunity to chat with Tom and Gary of Honey Beard in advance of their set for My Mixtape, Friday June 9th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. If you've heard any of their album Dreamless Sleep, it'll come as no surprise that things got pretty deep and philosophical. It was also very interesting to get an outside perspective on electronic music, as I usually deal exclusively with DJs. But as we touch on in the interview. more and more DJs/producers are moving to live performances, so with Honey Beard already doing this, we were able to cut to the core of the issue. It's about the authenticity of play, and the difference between pop and art. Whichever you prefer, I highly recommend giving our conversation a listen, and even more a play of their album (Spotify/Soundcloud). Topics include: The origin story of Honey Beard (both physically and in name), why any synth driven music is necessarily tied to the 80s, the philosophical nature of their album Dreamless Sleep, combining dark lyrics with upbeat music beds, walking the line between pop and art, the risk/reward of playing live, what's next for Honey Beard (live and recorded), and of course their set for My Mixtape.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sevla - Bandits

It's been about half a year between releases for Toronto's Sevla, but the man is back with a bonafide banger. "Bandits" sees Sevla transition from the "TRVP GOD" description on his soundcloud to a house head. But this isn't your typical house track, its bass driven along the lines Malaa or even fellow Canadians: CastNowski, CYMN and Audiation; the latter two are also represented on this episode. After last week's more laidback summer themed edition of Bump In The Hump, the Radio Humber airwaves are set to feel the pure technological terror of an hour of power. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Honey Beard - Dreamless Sleep

Last week I had the pleasure to play Honey Beard's sensational single "Celestial Bodies" from their debut album Dreamless Sleep. In honour its release this past Friday, I've got another track cue'd up and ready to go tonight on Bump In The Hump, but you'll have to tune in to find out which one makes the cut. They'll be playing two sets, Dreamless Sleep from start to finish, followed by a DJ set, and a premiere screening of their latest music video.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Jacques Greene - To Say

This past Friday Jacques Greene released his much anticipated album Feel Infinite on LuckyMe Records. The veteran DJ and producer is no stranger to incredible original productions, with tracks like "These Days" garnering strong support from Annie Mac and others. And while he's been relatively quiet release-wise, it's almost assuredly a result of an intense focus on Feel Infinite. A focus that shines bright throughout the cohesive and emotive album, as each track has been clearly polished beyond compare, playing its role perfectly in the opus that is Feel Infinite. While you can call his tracks house, I find it hard to accept it as just that. Ever since I first heard, the Will Ferrell from Old School aided track, "I Like You" I've had a hard time quantifying Greene's releases. They are quite simply quality, thoughtful and supremely designed electronic productions. Just damn good music, regardless of genre.After having already heard both "You Can't Deny" and "Afterglow" on Bump In The Hump, it's my pleasure to be able to play yet another cut from Feel Infinite tonight, "To Say." You can also see Jacques Greene as he returns home to Toronto at the tail end of his tour, April 15th at Velvet Underground (RSVP and Tickets). "To Say" isn't the only Friday release that gets a spin on Bump In The Hump tonight, I've also got a track from BADLQQK's RQQKIES 2. Nor is Feel Infinite the only new album represented, as I've got a track from Honey Beard's debut Dreamless Sleep, out this Friday. Finally we enjoy an onslaught of house from Cosella, Smalltown DJs, Pat Lok and birthday boy Frustra, who is playing tonight at Edenhall and Saturday at The Beaver. Months ago I professed my love for Prosumer's Mysti Remix of Tiga's track "Make Me Fall In Love" (read it here) now another legend in the music scene has added his touch to the already awesome Tiga track. It's with great pleasure that I'll be able to play perhaps the single most influential producer in my life, on Bump In The Hump. There's very little that, Benny Benassi hasn't accomplished in the world of electronic music, save for working with Canadian culture icon Tiga, that is until now. Benny brings his signature brand of Benassi bass and Italian intuition, to this mix, now available on Spinnin' Deep. It's everything you could possibly expect from two of the most prolific producers of this generation.
