Sheck Wes - Mo Bamba (Jaydon Lewis & Afterfab Remix)

The Sheck Wes "Mo Bamba" phenomenon is an interesting one. Despite not gaining much traction after its initial release last year, it has absolutely blown up this year. So much so that A-Trak called it "the best song of the year," in response to a (since deleted) Zedd tweet. Their exchange garnered coverage by least a half dozen blogs/publications, with my favourite coming from Dee Lockett at Vulture (here), as she submits Zedd as noted music theorist and Sheck Wes as young scholar for his line "Oh! Fuck! Shit! Bitch!" Regardless of whether you think "Mo Bamba" is a mere viral, sophomoric frat banger or a brilliant slice of subversive, contemporary art, it certainly is one of the most widely recognizable and talked about tracks of the year. Personally it's not my cup of tea, but that said I've now gone two days in a row coming across remixes that I can get down to (Paul Mond's baile funk version here and the collaborative Jaydon Lewis and Afterfab flip below). All the raw, rank and wild energy of the original is still present in this mix, just jacked up - as if there were room to do that with the original. The toybox background and anthemic nature remains, but the new chopped, slapped and smashed drops will leave your head spinning the same way dancefloors explode when the original comes on. It's just a fresh enough take to keep you entertained, while still close enough to the original to allow fans to still fuck with it.
