Just as we did last week, we start this week's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump with an explosion of energy. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peak: Eekkoo - Labyrinth

I just got back from a bike ride, and I can confirm it feels like June out there, and summer is most definitely on the way. Before then, we've got a couple of episodes of Bump In The Hump that return to two full hours of new Canadian electronic and dance as we put My Mixtape on a brief pause. Tonight's episode overflows with techno, trap, psytrance and a downpour of disco and DnB. We go up and down and all around, and because of that, the best tease of the episode is Eekkoo's "Labyrinth." While still immense in its essential, short edit form, Eekkoo's latest mau5trap majesty is much better enjoyed in its extended form (below). It showcases the enduring power of the piano, pulling you ever closer until you're lost forever in its captivating clutches. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Oliver Wickham - Indigo

Just as we have done the last two weeks, tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump begins with an extended section of progressive house and techno. While said section is largely built around mau5trap's milestone 10th edition of We Are Friends, there are back-to-back extended mixes whose releases I've been waiting for anxiously. Previously only available as part of the Anjunadeep 12 mix, Monday marked the full release of Oliver Wickham's breathtaking affair "Indigo." Sending shivers down your spine through scintillating synth sparkles that percolate out of the hazy, simmering atmosphere, this single is sure to warm listeners to the Wickham way. In fact, it's not the only time he appears in tonight's episode, as we also enjoy the ASHE remix of his Crimsen & Feyln collab, "Grey Skies." Enlightened Listening for February 12

It's the weekend, which means it's time to warp the week's releases in a bow with another edition of Enlightened Listening. Headlining this three and a half hour playlist is the milestone tenth edition of mau5trap's We Are Friends compilation series. It features label stalwarts ATTLAS, EDDIE and No Mana, alongside even more veteran talent in Mord Fustang, Pig&Dan, Tommy Trash and Wolfgang Gartner. And yes, deadmau5 does indeed lead the otherwise alphabetized affair. Staying with the longer form releases, MPH leaves his mark on Night Bass with a brilliant debut there, while ten artists enter into ill.Gates' Producer Dojo for a couple fists full of fire remixes. Aside from those three releases, we're left with thirteen individual tracks. Of the standout singles, I'm particularly fond of the piano in the expansive beauty of "WITHIN ME" and the chromatic resplendence of "Beyond Belief" & "Pacific." It probably doesn't need to be said, but don't miss the Jamie Jones or TSHA remixes, nor the Sleepnet or OAKK singles, if you're into stylish & immersive tracks. Unfortunately we couldn't quite match the magnitude of our in studio chat a year and a half ago, but we did some good catching up amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics include: his recent releases (EPs for EMERCIVE and mau5trap as well as a handful of singles), the possibility of scoring video/film in the future, focusing on DJ sets (as compared to the live sets he talked about last time), his penchant for producing multiple versions (VIPs/edits/etc) of his originals, experimenting with different genres, how he's passing the time in lockdown, his loaded release schedule for 2020, and of course his sophomore spin on My Mixtape, which airs Saturday March 28th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Enlightened Listening for January 17

It's only our third Friday of the year and already we're getting some big releases both building towards and culminating in awesome albums. This week's Enlightened Listening includes the release of two albums we've been looking forward to for a while, Mura Masa's sophomore full-length and Holy Fuck's first in four years. Following the 20 tracks from the aforementioned LPs, the closing third features a handful of hard hitting stuff as well as a brilliant slice from No Mana on mau5trap.

A turn from his divine self-titled debut, Mura Masa's R.Y.C prominently features the guitar and a tighter, angst-driven theme. It's not exactly for everyone, at least as far as his previous productions go, but it's not without musical merit or catchy cuts (see tracks with Clairo, slowthai, Georgia and Ellie Rowsell). Turning more electronic, Holy Fuck's Deleter can boast the same cohesiveness as Mura Masa, and almost as much guitar. It's full of groovy, cool cuts and is an incredible mixture of electronic and organic elements.

A sublime single from No Mana follows the albums and leads us into an electronic escape. Botnek follow up their epic and incredibly powerful "On Planet Z" with an equally dark and deep, rattling cut. Next up are a pair of killer remixes of the legendary DJ Zinc, where Neon Steve delivers a dope get-down and Le Duke a brilliant bass-line. Speaking of brilliant bass-lines that what we get next with the first taste of forthcoming Mad Zoo compilation This Is MAD TOO. Also high in energy, we get a taste of acid from Text Chunk and Hood Joplin as they gear up for their LP Bank Account which is set to drop on the 31st. Oft known for his acid, Djedotronic returns to Boysnoize Records with a scary three-track EP. Finally, we get another unreal single from Apashe ahead of his forthcoming album. Enjoy!

Enlightened Listening for December 13

The year is wrapping up and compilations and remix packages continue to abound. And while so many best of lists keep cropping up, good music keeps dropping and here it is in this week's Enlightened Listening. Things start with mau5trap's 9th edition of We Are Friends followed by two top notch techno EPs from two more top labels in Phantasy and Afterlife. We're then treated to eight new Hot Chip remixes which join the four previously released gems. Justin Jay then joins the fray with a quirky and killer EP worthy of Dirtybird before DJ Zinc and Chris Lorenzo get back together for a couple new joints. Things then turn to remixes as legends Four Tet and SOPHIE take on Skrillex and SONIKKU respectively. Finally the mysterious DnB entity Dawn Wall unleashes propulsive four-pack, Birdmask.

Enlightened Listening for May 12

A couple days late, but these tracks absolutely had to be shared. This week's Enlightened Listening gets underway with The Shapeshifters and Chic vocalist Kimberly Davis and the brilliant, biting brass of Glitterbox joint "Life Is A Dancefloor." Up next Paul Woolford unleashes an exceptional piano-led take on Hot Chip's heater "Hungry Child." The unstoppable force of Kölsch then ups the intensity with his remix of "Stella." Leading us further towards techno with a touch of midtempo, mau5trap once again wows with their recent releases through Sian's Ultraviolet EP 1.0. Marking the midway point in the playlist, Dimitri Veimar dazzles with 3 new originals alongside Dean Grenier's remix of the EP's title track "Planet." Changing gears, Pham returns with a diverse and delectable mixtape in Nostalgia. And indeed it is nostalgia you get upon seeing the title of Madeaux's massive "Black Magic Woman," a production worthy of one Carlos Santana. Next up Ninajirachi gives "303" some much needed movement, progression and captivating sound design, taking it from blah to banger. Finally, Night Bass bring us seven bangers worthy of their high standard; standouts include: "Desert Moon," "Killers" and "Fresh Prince." Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Polaris - Uncharted EP

Toronto DnB producer Polaris has had himself one heck of a first few months of 2019. He's already authored a single on the massive Sick Music 2019 compilation from the legendary Hospital Records, he then followed that with a wicked remix of Whiney's "Spheres" and this past Friday he released his debut EP, Uncharted. While visually and sonically indicative of Tron, which is quite literally a chart, each of the four tracks crackle with exceptional energy and an electronic allure, driving through a digital landscape.One of the tracks from Uncharted will find its way onto Bump In The Hump tonight, alongside a cut from Nathan Micay's Blue Spring, a couple exceptional mau5trap releases and two more top notch tracks from A-Trak and KRFW. We look ahead to thook's forthcoming NOISE LP and a weekend in which you can see Butrous, Ciel, Korea Town Acid and Barry Harris. The holidays are done and Bump In The Hump is back to new music as we return to the 8th season tonight. Over the course of the break things indeed slowed down, but there were still several high powered releases, however none could match the magnitude of mau5trap's 8th edition of We Are Friends. Boasting an epic 35 tracks and more than three and a half hours of music, it is jam packed with fan favourites and new names. Of course there's many you'll recognize from not just Bump In The Hump, but this blog in general, including ASHE, ATTLAS, Eekkoo, Rhett and more. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Rhett & Attlas - Crater

Over the course of the year Attlas has trained my brain to expect new music from him with regularity. Seems that timer had gone off as I found myself thinking, "Jeez, I could sure go for that feeling new Attlas brings." Well thanks to Rhett's Hollow Earth, out now on mau5trap, we got that new new. "Crater" combines Rhett's robust techno builds and Attlas' always colourful and captivating cinematic arcs. At times it is wild, others entirely restrained. Sometimes shrouded in darkness, other times overflowing with warmth and light. The "Crater" in the middle of the track, and the striding egress that returns to the raucous entrance, imbues the track with an always entertaining progression. Like Tiga and Kölsch's "Still So High," it showcases the best of each artist in compelling fashion. Enjoy now below!

NewAgeMuzik - DM's (Kastle & bk beats Remix)

The year end compilations just keep coming, and as I mentioned with mau5trap's We Are Friends Vol. 7, I quite enjoy when there's new content added. That's the case with Mixpak's Holiday Bundle, which features "originals, remixes and bootlegs." The one that caught my attention this morning is the collaborative affair from LA's Kastle and bk beats. They've taken on the already dreamy "DM's" from London's NewAgeMuzik, and upped the internet intensity through even more effects and samples. Where the original feels more lucid through stripped down instrumentation, this new take leans more on the bouyant bass atmosphere creating a cloud to encompass the entire track. And that's really where all the action happens, in the cloud: URL. This is also the key to what makes Kastle and bk beats' remix so smart. It is an incontrovertible internet age track, not just in theory, but in practice. And I'll say, as an early internet child, I absolutely love it. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: We Are Friends Vol. 7

It's compilation season everyone! It's the time of year slews of singles get packaged together. That might not mean much for best-of releases, but when they're as big and full of new tunes as We Are Friends Vol. 7, you've certainly got something to talk about. This monumental mix of mau5trap runs 23 tracks deep, bringing a list of new favourites from Attlas, Moguai & Tinlicker, Notaker, Rhett among many others. Of course you can trust that I'll be bringing a couple cuts to Bump In The Hump!

While the concerned mau5trap fan might be wondering "why no Rezz?" Take solace in knowing she'll still appear on Bump In The Hump tonight. Adding to the milestone above, AVA just hit 200 releases with Andy Moor, Somna and Diana Leah, and somehow we've got new BLANSH for the 5th week in a row. And as always we have the weekend warmup, which looks a little outside the city this time with Krayysh and Sevla in Waterloo Friday (here). Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam - Sex

The massively debated and previously unidentified Spinnin' Records track, that's racked up over 623 thousand plays in just over two weeks has finally been revealed as a collaboration between trios, LA's Cheat Codes and Dutch Kris Kross Amsterdam, and is available for download today.

Aptly titled "Sex," has Spinnin' flexing it's label strength, procuring the rights to sample Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex." The line "all the good things and bad things" immediately called me back to Akon's use of that line in Kid Ink's "Rewind." That's not the only similarity between the two either. The vibes of each elicit a warm floating feeling. Where "Rewind" leans more on DJ Mustard's synth sound, "Sex" is significantly more tropical, very similar to Major Lazer and DJ Snake's "Lean On." Furthermore, the first twenty seconds have a distinct resemblance to What So Not's "Touched." One commenter called it a rip off of Where Are U Now, Lean On, Sorry and What Do You Mean. While "Sex" no doubt seems to borrow facets from all of these tracks, it is its own distinct production. It is, at worst a mere mashup of covers, and at best, a finely crafted combination of some of the best pop music from the past year.

Of course this isn't anything new for Spinnin' Records, being the host label for chronic recyclers Vinai. A quick survey of Vinai's catalog of releases makes it seem like they've only ever started one project file and just keep minutely changing each production before sending them to Spinnin'. This seems all too common for the Dutch label which continually churns out repackaged, commercially leverage-able music, whether it's from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Oliver Heldens or the Lost Kings, the other act many commenters thought might have produced "Sex." This isn't to say that Spinnin' is without merit, it certainly holds a different footing, philosophy and purpose than Dirtybird, Ed Banger, mau5trap or even OWSLA. Whatever the case, you can now get your copy of "Sex" now.

REZZ - The Silence Is Deafening

Today's release of The Silence Is Deafening marks a massive leap forward in REZZ's skyrocketing career trajectory. The four track EP released on mau5trap is everything we've come to expect from REZZ - suspense-ridden, brooding intensity, throbbing bass, alien synths, and attentively crafted percussion - all artfully assembled in her most fierce and consummate productions yet. The first track "Lost," is the first time we've had any vocals on a REZZ track, and apparently she learns quickly, as it is her most supremely polished production. 'Slithering' into our consciousness, the darkness of "Lost" overcomes it's mere parts, and sounds to become a commanding, foreign presence - embodied by Delaney Jane's celestial offerings. I expect this will happen an awful lot in the future; I foresee it getting a lot radio play as it's certainly her most accessible production with the aid of Delaney's entrancing vocals.

She follows that up with "Edge" perhaps her most twisted production to date. Your face is sure to wince when you take in it's sour synths, manipulated ever so nefariously, darkening your heart and soul, preparing you for the immanent attack of the busted bass drop. Lurking ever closer, the wickedness always seems to be on the verge of consuming you. Each note and progression is so finely placed and skillfully tuned for maximum atmosphere.

"Delusion" continues the highly hypnotic mastery; its melody are equal parts mischievous and tempered, leaving you with a certain unease and anxiousness. Ominously plodding along, the growth becomes nearly unbearable until the 'relief' comes ever so deprived and incomplete, leading into "Methodology." This is perhaps the sneakiest part of the EP, as we have now become fully enslaved by REZZ's magic. As is her "Methodology," she's used her alien powers to puppet us, whether she ups the intensity and tempo or slows it - both of which happen in the final track of the EP. After listening to the EP at least a half dozen times now, I can truly say that each and everytime, I am helpless to keep my heart rate under my control, REZZ has won me over. That being said, it is at your own risk to press play on The Silence Is Deafening as you may or may not become REZZ's very own voodoo doll.
