Enlightened Listening for May 14

After perhaps the final Bandcamp Friday, we're back to Spotify with this week's Enlightened Listening. While the vast majority of the names in this week's list appear here often, there is but one rarity in Skrillex, who actually released two tracks this week, of which "Butterflies" with Starrah and Four Tet is my preferred release. And I guess since we're down near the bottom of the playlist, why not finish those final four releases right now. Ahead of "Butterflies" are a couple of dope, deep and groovy remixes from Majestic and Tiga. The final release in the list comes from Overmono, who tease their forthcoming venture with fabric, the titular "If U Ever." The fabric mix is set to drop July 16th.

Staying with mixes, we move to the first group of four releases as Jayda G's 21 track DJ-Kicks compilation was unveiled today. Joining it in the upper third is Gaspard Augé's excellent second single, Myd's jovial remix of Hot Chip, and two new takes on MD X-Spress from trusted talents Eats Everything and The Vision. Finally, the middle third of the playlist features three of my favourite long-running, organic/progressive/house artists in ASHE, ATTLAS and Qrion. Somehow each of these three tracks manages to be more serene and inspiriting than the next. Standing on its own in this middle foursome and standing out in its own EP, "True Romance" from My Friend is the latest exemplification of Anjunadeep's recent run of brilliance (see "Clouds" and "I See You In My Dreams").

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Cameron Morse - Anything

One of the best holiday traditions comes from LuckyMe, who share 12 previously unreleased or rare tracks via their Advent Calendar. This year's edition is as stacked as ever, playing host to the likes of Jacques Greene, Mssingno, A. G. Cook, S-Type, Lunice, Nathan Micay, Martyn Bootyspoon, Hudson Mohawke and others. While we'll be playing more than one of these tracks on Bump In The Hump, here we're focusing on the calendar's capstone, Cameron Morse's "Anything."

A track I first heard in Martyn Bootyspoon's July Crack Mix, "Anything," then labelled as "gen_1v_2," was an instant standout for me. It appears immediately after "Time To Time," another forthcoming Love Minus Zero (Tiga & Hudson Mohawke) production; the two tracks blend perfectly, making it one of my favourite sections of the year. Both sparse and beautiful, it's hard not to be affected by such a simple yet soulful serenade. Emanating from the fog of "Time To Time," "Anything" arises like an old AI program awakening from a decades-long slumber. It struggles to recapture its form and execute its program, coughing and sputtering in spectacular fashion. While alone, it might appear frail and faulty, in the context of this mix, and hopefully so in Bump In The Hump tonight, it works wonders to inspire movement and welcome the next wave.

Get "Anything" as part of LuckyMe's 2020 Advent Calendar here, catch it in the mix as Bump In The Hump returns to the Radio Humber airwaves live tonight from 7-9 EST, or after the fact on Mixcloud.

Top 100 Tracks Of 2020: 25-1

The conclusion of the list started Monday from 100-76, which also includes my disclaimer/preamble. The middle sections can be found here: from 75-51 & 50-26. Find Soundcloud playlist here and Spotify here.
When I first saw that Kölsch had remixed London Grammar, this was what I was expecting. Instead, I saw a tight four-minute affair, that while good enough to make a list like this, felt entirely underwhelming. Glorious and gargantuan, this is the perfect track to take us into our final tier. It showcases both Hannah Reid's vocals and the original instrumental beautifully while extrapolating on their excellence. As with so much of London Grammar's catalogue, it is best when given time and space to breathe. It's stunning in its simple beauty, standing resolute against the abyss. A tempered touch from Kölsch, this is a masterpiece and yet another example of the power of the extended mix.
While not technically an Afterlife release, I first encountered this epic in a mix of theirs. It's got everything I want from a track like this: big dramatic movement, spellbinding synths, killer sound design and a riveting vocal to tie it all together. The massive movement throughout this seven-minute affair is all too enthralling. Innellea immediately grabs you by the hand and pulls you into his underwater inferno, brandishing you with his scalding sorcery and abysmal black art. It is another one of those epics whose infectiousness leaves you powerless to its unearthly energy and uncanny charm. Just tell me you don't get swept away by those synths...

While there are still house tracks left in this countdown, this is without question one of the greatest iterations of the foundational genre. It reminds listeners of the two producers' legendary statuses, especially as every element in it tickles the senses. The piano, the strings, the diverse drums, the vocals, the bevy of effects; they all combine in crazy infectious fashion, each sparkling and gold-plated. It really is a diamond-clad delivery that hits on every single note. It's no game-changer, it's just a gloriously good time, especially as we're wowed by the barking vocal chops.

Enlightened Listening for December 11

Short but sweet and oh so awesome, this week's Enlightened Listening features 20 tracks across 12 different releases. Led by a killer Jessy Lanza remix package in 24/7, remixes are indeed this playlists' theme. One of the year's hottest producers, TEED delivers yet another incredible remix as does Planningtorock. The legendary likes of Mssingno and A. G. Cook appear as fabulous freebies courtesy LuckyMe's annual advent calendar. Headlining a Canadian heavy cast, Tiga's Colours So Bright is utterly inspired (b-side included). While the middle of this list is groovy through Hatiras, Aeroplane and Dr Packer, the final two tracks are stone-cold killers in Haus Of Panda and TIGER DROOL. Enjoy!

Enlightened Listening for November 6

We've made it through another week, and what a week it was, so let's celebrate with some new music.

This week's edition of Enlightened Listening opens with ATTLAS' second album of the year, an even more sublime offering than his usual ethereal excellence. It's not the only awesome album either as the ageless Kylie Minogue offers up an absolute delight in DISCO. Staying with longer releases, This Never Happened continues its unbelievable run of quality as Deeparture delivers an incredible EP, just as Overmono complete their inspired Everything U Need with two more top-notch tracks. Closing the book on EPs, HERO's CLUB NOWHERE is another stunner that, like CRY BABY and Dirty Work, will keep me coming back for weeks, if not months.

Now for the singles: Moullinex delivers sensuous pleasure in "Ven," Tiga turns Elderbrook's "Back To My Bed" into an infectious, uplifting roller, The Magician goes Italo disco on Mercer's uber-catchy "Lemonade," The Reflex brings "Sweet Freedom" closer to Michael McDonald's original, KUU deliver a chill second single, KAS:ST does dark and dismal with "VTOPIA," and we get the first taste of what promises to be a killer collaborative project from Frustra and Maddmon in "Eternal Wake."

Four Unreleased Tracks I'm Still Waiting For...

As the summer has come and gone, four tracks have found themselves still at the front of my mind as I wait for their eventual release. In early July we got a taste of the power pairing of Tiga and Hudson Mohawke by way of their Hardcore Romance hit "Love Minus Zero." Along with that a mix for Annie Mac, which featured a few more of their collaborations "Time To Time" and "Tear Down The Walls." The former also appeared in Martyn Bootyspoon's mix for Crack Magazine, and I must say I can neither get enough of the track itself nor its placement in the mix. Find it below starting just before the hour twenty-nine mark and be sure to stick around as the subsequent synth-led tracks are equally sublime.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Tiga & Hudson Mohawke - Love Minus Zero

There may be no more obvious track for me to feature in this weekly sneak peek at Bump In The Hump. Of course Tiga is one of the show's must trusted producers, and it's not the first time he's appeared alongside the versatile Hudson Mohawke (see "Planet E"). However there is nothing quite like "Love Minus Zero."

Featuring a sound they're calling 'hardcore romance,' this new collaboration has instantly become the most talked about production on the planet. Skream, Four Tet, Jackmaster, Jacques Greene, and of course Annie Mac who premiered it, have all shared their support for the triumphant, emo-odyssey that is "Love Minus Zero." As Tiga told Annie during Monday's in depth interview (listen back here), he and Hudson's studio process features a "who can put their hands in the air higher" contest, bonding over letting go of sophistication and pretense. And boy does "Love Minus Zero" ooze with a fabulous freedom, urging its listeners to let go, spread their wings and fly off into the sunset that is the track's sublime, spellbinding synths and swoon-worthy warmth.

A surefire inclusion in this year's best of list, catch "Love Minus Zero" on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Party Central Transmission w/ Kane West

Montreal mainstays, the Sontag brothers have been busy in conversation lately. Of course Tiga's acclaimed podcast First/Last Party On Earth is back, with big names Four Tet and Boys Noize kicking off its sophomore season. The second Sontag, Thomas Von Party, has seemingly relaunched his Party Central Transmission series, which was originally meant to be only music and no talk. However just over a year after the lone episode in said format, Von Party has tapped his DJ, Move Your Body collaborator Gus Lobban, aka Kane West, for a conversation.

A combo mix/interview, the two chat about their first interactions, Kane's conspicuous remix of "Let's Go Dancing," the DMT trip that led to "Yes, Exactly," Kane's work with Kero Kero Bonito and PC Music as well as his concept of kitsch in music, and finally, their thoughts about the consequences of COVID-19 on streaming, the entertainment industry and the future at large. While the music can be a bit of a distraction at times, this nearly 40 minute transmission is chock full of enlightening nuggets.FOLLOW THOMAS VON PARTY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

The Magician - Magic Tape 94

Belgian tastemaker The Magician never fails when it comes to his prolific Magic Tape mix series. Each and every time he manages to combine the freshest funk and soulful house tracks. And of course this 94th edition is no different. In just the first four tracks alone, two have been released in November and another, Tensnake's "Rules," is still forthcoming. The quality and fresh nature of the track selection is one thing, but being able to combine it as seamlessly as The Magician does is the true mark of quality.

Since the weather has turned I've felt an urge to play video games, especially when I listen to a good mix. This has been something that occurs to me when I revisit old mixes, as I have been doing lately with Tiga's weekly My Name Is Tiga upload. There are a number of old mixes that I go back to time and time again and always associate with some of my favourite times in university playing Lord Of The Rings Online for hours on end. And I truly believe there is something special about the combination of being focused on playing something while still having enough brain power left to enjoy a mix. It doesn't matter if the mix is new or old, fast or slow, heavy or easy-going, or even whether it has voice over - it just moves along brilliantly as you play. All of this is to say that, serendipitously a childhood friend reached out to me today, sharing a game he created (try it here), and of course I needed something to listen to while giving it a go.

Enter The Magician and the smooth moves of Magic Tape 94. Each worked on the other making both more enjoyable. Early on I suffered many defeats, but as the music kept getting better I couldn't just quit, I had to keep grooving. So maybe you can give yourself the same magical feeling by diving into a game and throwing this mix on. Or at least do something that lets the mix sit comfortably in the background, so as to properly let The Magician's alchemy inspire. Find semi-complete tracklist here.
