Full, Uncut Interview with Feyln

Recorded July 8th on Zoom, this is my full conversation with Toronto progressive-house and melodic-techno producer, Feyln. Topics included: his earliest inspirations and electronic origins, his status as a "club rat," which led to a love for the local sound, the Toronto scene (including ATTLAS, Simon Doty, Rhyot & EMERCIVE and the Mastermind crew: Crimsen, Oliver Wickham and ASHE), exploring and expanding in the future, the name Feyln (being alright with 'failing'), art vs business and the commodification of art, the return of live music and shows, and, of course, his episode of My Mixtape, which premieres this Saturday, July 17th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Enlightened Listening for May 14

After perhaps the final Bandcamp Friday, we're back to Spotify with this week's Enlightened Listening. While the vast majority of the names in this week's list appear here often, there is but one rarity in Skrillex, who actually released two tracks this week, of which "Butterflies" with Starrah and Four Tet is my preferred release. And I guess since we're down near the bottom of the playlist, why not finish those final four releases right now. Ahead of "Butterflies" are a couple of dope, deep and groovy remixes from Majestic and Tiga. The final release in the list comes from Overmono, who tease their forthcoming venture with fabric, the titular "If U Ever." The fabric mix is set to drop July 16th.

Staying with mixes, we move to the first group of four releases as Jayda G's 21 track DJ-Kicks compilation was unveiled today. Joining it in the upper third is Gaspard Augé's excellent second single, Myd's jovial remix of Hot Chip, and two new takes on MD X-Spress from trusted talents Eats Everything and The Vision. Finally, the middle third of the playlist features three of my favourite long-running, organic/progressive/house artists in ASHE, ATTLAS and Qrion. Somehow each of these three tracks manages to be more serene and inspiriting than the next. Standing on its own in this middle foursome and standing out in its own EP, "True Romance" from My Friend is the latest exemplification of Anjunadeep's recent run of brilliance (see "Clouds" and "I See You In My Dreams").

Enlightened Listening for March 12

Once again we've had an incredible week of releases, making for a massive edition of Enlightened Listening. Stretching past the seven-hour mark while coming in just at just less than 100 tracks, the new music playlist is built upon a handful of long-form projects and several sensational singles.

Thematically, the first six releases fit together under the progressive house/trance umbrella. We open with the culmination of two teased albums from CRi and Sultan + Shepard, the latter showcasing the duo in top form. With a similar sentiment, ASHE is on the top of his game with Strangers Dream which features "Stay," a quintessential ASHE production, and two truly sublime slices in "Earth Room"& "Bleeding Heart." Later, TDJ whets our appetite for TDJ002 with dreamy delivery "Lalala."

Next up, London Grammar grace us with a new obsession-worthy single in the hook-driven "How Does It Feel." Hot on the heels of that heavenly offering are two more moving groovers in Jayda G's gorgeous remix of Rhye and Friend Within's equally fabulous LP Hope. Turning more tech-driven, Morgan Geist's masterful remix of Marie Davidson leads us down the ever-darker, more intense and driving backend of this playlist. From the at times bright and groovy designs of Black Loops and Doss to the scorching DnB of Denham Audio, Sleepnet and John Rolodex, this playlist never lacks power. As if taking that last statement as a challenge, the playlist runs right off the rails with the unhinged energy and brutal bangers of ALRT, Dion Timmer, HNTR and Dropwizz. Stream the weekly new music playlist (mixed for optimal flow) below, find each of the releases linked individually after the jump and enjoy!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Oliver Wickham - Indigo

Just as we have done the last two weeks, tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump begins with an extended section of progressive house and techno. While said section is largely built around mau5trap's milestone 10th edition of We Are Friends, there are back-to-back extended mixes whose releases I've been waiting for anxiously. Previously only available as part of the Anjunadeep 12 mix, Monday marked the full release of Oliver Wickham's breathtaking affair "Indigo." Sending shivers down your spine through scintillating synth sparkles that percolate out of the hazy, simmering atmosphere, this single is sure to warm listeners to the Wickham way. In fact, it's not the only time he appears in tonight's episode, as we also enjoy the ASHE remix of his Crimsen & Feyln collab, "Grey Skies." Dive into Wickham's sensational solo Anjunadeep debut below, catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact as catalogued on Mixcloud here.

Enlightened Listening for January 29

While weighing in a hair lighter than last week's hefty harvest, this week's Enlightened Listening is no featherweight. Spanning 20 releases, this 82 track six-hour odyssey is built around a ridiculous number of remixes and a couple killer compilation/mixtapes. Of the latter two, The Magician brings together an all-star lineup for his milestone Magic Tape, #100, while James Grant & Jody Wisternoff curate a killer second CD for Anjunadeep 12. Both deserve full plays, and that's easy with both, as they're each released in seamless, mixed form as well. Now, as far as remixes are concerned, there are plenty to highlight. I love the 'Foals' remix of Everything Everything, especially as, with the Gentle Dom remix two weeks ago, it paves a unique path. BRONSON again score some sick remixes with Hayden James, obli and Patrick Topping delivering a diverse trio. Similarly stacked, the Aluna Renaissance (Remixes) boasts brilliance from the likes of UNIIQU3, TSHA and The Martinez Brothers. Capping the remix conversation, Olof Dreijer, Dimitri From Paris, and ASHE, work wonders with "Monument," "Finally Ready," and "Grey Skies," respectively. Finally, I'd be foolish not to further direct your attention to TroyBoi's warm, resplendent and ingenious EP, V!BEZ, Vol. 4. Have a great weekend and enjoy!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Best Of 2020 (Part 1, Groovy)

It's year in review time as tonight marks the first of two episodes devoted to Bump In The Hump's Best Of 2020. This week will focus on groovy tracks, while next week turns its attention to the heavy hitters. Of course, due to time restrictions, I was not able to fit all of the selections into the two-hour episode, so I've opted to share some honourable mentions here. While not in the episode, I want to be clear that these tracks are indeed part of the best of the year; however, they simply would not fit.

Enlightened Listening for November 13

Another week is done and with it comes another installment of Enlightened Listening. This week's playlist features three highly anticipated releases alongside more than a handful of pleasant surprises.

Starting with the anticipated offerings, ASHE launches his new label Ocean Dark with two of his trademark organic and chilling concoctions. TSHA's Flowers EP finds its conclusion with two more awesome and inspired collabs in "Renegade" and "Demba" featuring Ell Murphy and Trio Da Kali, respectively. Finally, after more than a year of anticipation and apparently five years in the making, The Vision's The Vision has come to fruition. With a handful of fabulous singles and countless killer collabs, it has the makings of an album of the year contender.

As for the aforementioned pleasant surprises, Sultan + Shepard start things off with another incredible EP on This Never Happened, continuing their ridiculously high-quality run of releases there. Another unstoppable pairing crops up next as Clarian returns to Anjunadeep with sublime Sunbeam. Staying with dynamic duos, Bonobo and TEED deliver a divine b-side to brilliant "Heartbreak." Rounding out the stunning selection of remixes of HiRUDiN, Octo Octa offers up an epic take on "Mountain Baby." The Prospa boys continue their incredible run with the classic vibes of "The Thrill," which after seeing a tweet say it sounds like Black Mirror's "San Junipero" I can't get out of my head. Finally, the playlist concludes with two top-notch remixes of The ShapeshiftersBilly Porter led "Finally Ready."

Stream this week's Enlightened Listening below and find each individual release linked at the bottom.

Enlightened Listening for October 9

Time continues to somehow both fly and drag along, and here we are at yet another Friday. Despite being a mere nine releases, this edition of Enlightened Listening stretches over 4.5 hours and features 50+ tracks. On the album side of things, there's an insanely stacked lineup of Foals remixes, Machinedrum's highly anticipated followup to Human Energy, Mat Zo's triumphant return to Anjunabeats, and the killer collaboration of Sub Focus and Wilkinson. On the shorter side, ASHE delivers a divine EP to mau5trap, just as Amtrac, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Planningtorock and Skream supply sensational remixes of their own. Dig into it all below and have a great weekend!
