Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (SanFranDisko Re-Visit)

Editor extraordinaire, SanFranDisko has done it again, this time re-visiting Stevie Nicks' 1983 single "Stand Back." Lending itself to this kind of edit thanks to the Prince played synthesizers (as Nicks wrote the song around the melody from "Little Red Corvette"), SanFranDisko leverages that lush lead adding just a little more oomph to the synthpop/dance-rock original. Already a triumphant number, this take feels even more fearless than before; Stevie stands resolute, staring daringly at a darkened, dreamy dance-floor. However this is par for the course for Nicks who always exudes a mystical allure, spellbinding listeners with for decades, and that's just what happens here. The Immortals - The Ultimate Warlord (SanFranDisko DJ Friendly Edit)

Regular readers will know of my affinity for disco edits, so the name SanFranDisko will not be a new one. This weekend he unleashed another awesome edit, removing the key change and quantizing the Canadian space disco classic from The Immortals.

I first came across "The Ultimate Warlord" in a mix from Boy 8-Bit a number of years ago and was immediately awestruck. It is a warm and wickedly epic organ-led dance number that sits at the intersection of fantasy and sci-fi. And really, what is cooler than that? It's like a lost sequence of Heavy Metal, and perhaps this isn't much of a stretch as the magazine the film was based on shares the same timeline as "The Ultimate Warlord."

SanFranDisko's updated, DJ friendly, edit lets the magic of the original stand strong, while removing the pesky key change, and planting each beat right on cue, making it easier for mixing. That said, the life and funky groove of the original is still present. Whether through the living and breathing organ, the slew of effects and vocals, or numerous swelling risers, you can see this epic creation emerging from its vinyl grooves. Aretha Franklin - Get It Right (SanFranDisko Mix)

As you likely know by now the world is in mourning as we lost the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin to pancreatic cancer. Over the decades of her legendary career, her voluminous voice and preeminent productions have been used by countless artists ranging from Dimitri From Paris to Zeds Dead.

Today amidst the outpouring of love comes an edit of her chart topping 1983 soulful boogie song "Get It Right" from respected remixer Paul Goodyear, aka SanFranDisko. The original life Luther Vandross and Marcus Miller instilled in the six minute single still stands strong, like Franklin's legacy. Goodyear has put Miller's bass to good use, driving this extended edit throughout, while also letting the other instrumentation shine through especially in the second half. And there is no shortage of potent play in "Get It Right," as the plethora of percussion and more, come together in a dynamic delivery.

But of course this is nothing without the Queen. She is the leader. Her delivery is everything. It shimmers. It growls. It screams. It inspires. It cannot be understated. Enlightened Listening for April 27

Another Friday another epic list of releases. This week I've decided to focus almost exclusively  on singles (remixes included) from my favourite names. However I've returned to Soundcloud this week to accommodate the newly launched mix series from Falcons. Hunter Siegel - Fading (ft. Melanie?)
Just in time for his latest No Neon date, Hunter returns with his first original in forever. It's clear however that he's not lost a step with walloping wubs and killer chops. If you'll pardon the pun, the future looks dark and stormy for the dark plur himself.

Brya - Neon Lovin'
Disco funk theme engage. This is one of the two artists I wasn't familiar with prior to today, but it didn't take long for me to realize this was a hot groove and the kind of future (insert genre) I enjoy.

NOTD ft. Bea Miller - I Wanna Know (Pusher Remix)
Like Hunter it's been forever since we've had new Pusher, and like Brya it's immensely pleasing to have neon nobility back in the game. Be sure to check out his new video series "Music Minutes."

Silicon Scally - Rift
Drawn in by the Central Processing Unit label, I'm happy to have come across Scally and this EP, from which "Rift" is my favourite. It is a brilliant blend of old school electro and techno, that shows off the underlying life of overtly electronic productions. Genius.

Pete Shelley - Witness The Change (SanFranDisko Remix)*
Despite spending less than eight months in the 80s it will forever feel like home for me. The more I get exposed to it, especially through trusted sources like SanFranDisko, the more I love it. Fancy a groovy cruising track? Well look no further.

Bensley - Do It Again (ft. Armanni Reign)
When drum and bass is done right there isn't much better, especially when it has strong vocals. You can trust Bensley to bring that killer quality, as this one goes off with undeniable energy and ease.

MDK - X Buster*
The wubstep warrior and chiptune champion is back with this piece of playful power and fun funk.

Alexander Robotnick - Problèmes d'Amour (Petko Turner's 808 BD Edit)*
The Petko polish shines strong on this one. While sonically it's entirely unrelated to Silicon Scally, they both sound like machines coming to life and breaking out on the dancefloor.

Sam Smith - Pray (MK Remix)
After the success of his remix of "Money On My Mind" it should be no surprise that this follow up is just as good. Truthfully everything MK touches turns to gold, but there's just something about the way he chops Sam Smith's voice; add that to the choir and you've got some sublime, heavenly house.

Poolside - Feel Alright (Yuksek Remix)
The disco grooves just don't stop. Yuksek blesses the piano, guitar and drums, making a musical bed that you cannot sleep on but must simply bounce on all day and night.

Amtrac ft. Anabel Englund - Old Times (Skream Remix)
Talk about a trio of all stars. This jumped off the screen and into my soul, but even better blasted out the speakers. However I've fallen face down and cannot get up after those pans punched through the wubs. Skream has been making top notch tracks for years, but it feels like this last year or so he's settled into his golden age of supremely satisfying and epic electronic tracks.

Falcons - Fluidity Mixtape Vol. 1*
For years Falcons has been at the intersection of rap and electronic, especially with his bootleg remixes (see his Loosies release), but it looks like now he's really ready to showcase that skill with this Fluidity mix series, from which each individual edit/bootleg/mashup will be released a month later. Kariya - Let Me Love You For Tonight (SanFranDisko Re-Rub 2018)

Bay area bad boy SanFranDisko is at it again, adding to his enormous catalog with a 2018 re-rub of Kariya's 1988 classic. While you may not have heard "Let Me Love You For Tonight" in its original epicness, you've certainly encountered its intoxicating riff in "Insomnia" from Faithless, among several other iterations. In typical SanFranDisko fashion he's left much of the original allure upfront, while sliding in his signature strength to not only update but upgrade. It still screams of classic club vibes, but seemingly everything is one upped. The tempo jumps a gear, the backbone is bolstered, and boy does it ever flow fat and full. Sunday Disco Delights

Yada yada yada, I love disco. Disco, disco, disco. There's nothing that I go to more frequently or enjoy so unabashedly as much as disco. Whether it's the strings and things, funky bass, gooey grooves, loving lyrics or just the anything goes ethos, I just cannot get enough of disco old and new. It's just the perfect mixture of live elements with repetitive electronic grooves. Today I've decided that I ought to showcase a small sampling of some of my favourites of the moment, from some of my most trusted sources. There's the ever awesome and expanding library of Funkingham (specifically Pimpin Willie) remixing the sublime Sade, the preeminent Dimitri From Paris, and supreme being SanFranDisko. The other two tracks are just as juicy and jam worthy; Cordycep I found through Greg Wilson and the "Everybody Dance" edit comes courtesy Dimitri From Paris, who referred to it as his all-time favourite. Lime - Unexpected Lovers (SanFranDisko Re-Edit)

Let's get this out of the way: I love disco. It's frivolous fun and sonic satisfaction. So today when I was looking for something I could really sink my teeth into, SanFranDisko's account appeared like a beam of light bursting through the dark clouds of dubstep. The man behind the music, DJ Paul Goodyear is somewhat of a legend, authoring over 200 tracks on Soundcloud alone, having built his repertoire for more than 30 years. Of the endless productions on his page I landed on his most recent remix, a twist on the Lime classic "Unexpected Lovers." It's got everything you need from a big time disco mix. It's epic in its 8 minute arc, with a groove that just won't quit, punchy percussion, and an oh so scintillating synth. It just reeks of energy and love through its bouncy and buoyant eurodance vibes. All this is made better by the fact it's available free and in WAV format.
