Enlightened Listening for March 6

After last week's epic five album edition of Enlightened Listening we were due for a lower output, but that doesn't mean the quality has been cut. This week I've ditched the conventional build from easy, chill grooves in the opening to fire bangers in the finale and flipped the script. We open with the latest futuristic fire from Slooze who continues to build his incredible apocalyptic catalog of originals. He's followed by the debut release on René LaVice's new label DeVice. Our only album of the week comes next in the explosive followup to Doctor P's landmark Animal Vegetable Mineral, Pt. 1.

That closes out the more conventional bangers as we turn to a top notch track from Todd Terry and Alexander Technique in "Jack The Tek." Staying techy, Mason Maynard shows off his incredible knack for groove and bumping beats in Lookin' At Me. Staying hot and heavy, Cloverdale follow that up with a collaborative EP with Tombz on Country Club Disco. The legendary duo of Booka Shade close out the tech-driven records with two superb singles in their standout style.

Finally we get to the last five records, all of which ought to inspire you to dance. First up, Giraffage offers up some wild power in "Workout." Hoodboi and LEFTI then lean into lush grooves and brilliant bass-lines in the fabulous "4ever." Kiesza continues to reign supreme in 2020 with another spine-tingling slice of pop as we move into "All Of The Feelings." My anticipation for TOPS album I Feel Alive keeps growing as we receive its third single "Colder & Closer," and finally we close with Robotaki's second single of the year, the dynamic and divine "Now That We've Been In Love." Holy funky Friday Batman! What another blessed week for releases. There's killer tracks from Apashe, Boys Noize, Chris Lake, along with the resurrections of both The Dove and Nicky Da B. A masterful album from Ryan Hemsworth. A mindblowing midtempo compilation from some of the best in the game plus funk from NAMPA, Midas Hutch and 2ToneDisco. NAMPA - Babymood
What's in the water that makes the French so funky? This one has me smiling from ear to ear, as both the vocals and production tickle my heartstrings. Feels like Aeroplane's mix of "The Piper's Song."

Midas Hutch - The Feels
We've already heard (and fallen in love) with a couple of these cuts, but six tracks are truly a treat, nailing the EP's title. Perfect for a sunset stream, sharing some drinks with friends.

Ryan Hemsworth - Elsewhere
This man can do it all, and this album is perfect proof of that fact. Just look at the number of tracks and artists, and the overall quality of each. Indie and pop at the same time. And those switch ups, damn!

MEMBA - Stand Off (ft. Ehiorobo)
These guys have been on the come up for a while so it's awesome to see them on Monstercat. While I continue to grow less and less interested in future bass, there's no arguing the killer quality of MEMBA's sound design, nor their ability to work with and around vocalists.

2ToneDisco - Love Automatica (ft. Chandler Blasé)*
So funky chiptune disco you say? No wonder I'm on board. Even when it's drawn back and Blasé takes the lead I can't help but tap my toes. Then when it all comes together, that's true love.

A-Trak ft. Todd Terry - DJs Gotta Dance More (Cassius Burnin' Mix)
Took me a bit to dig the last mix of this track, but when I heard the 15 second teaser for this one I immediately knew this was going to be for me. Legends on legends on legends. Sure to get more than just the DJs dancing, I can see everyone from the security to the bar staff grooving out to this.

Chris Lake & Green Velvet - Deceiver
Did someone say legends? Because we've got another killer collab here. Clean yet dirty. Simple yet strong. No big surprises here just another potent production to add to each of these veterans' catalogs.

Apashe - Do It (ft. Black Prez)
Is this really the first Apashe original since Requiem? Clearly he's been perfecting this and it shows. Another unreal ominous soundscape with viscous, violent drops and a dope vocal delivery.

Various Artists - Blood Moon*
Of the seven artists on this EP, I've covered or played everyone except No Etiquette, but their track has me digging for more. All these tracks reek of destruction, despair, dread, death and other dark D words.

The Dove - Vault Traxx
Hold up! The Dove is back?! It's hard to match the viral quality of "Girl At A Party With Siren" but these two new tracks are both in the same vein as that original Twin Turbo release. Pure party power.

Wuki - Go Deep (ft. Nicky Da B)
There have been a handful of tracks with this name, but Wuki may have just won the title with this banger. The bass line is wicked sick, sure to have you moving at one hell of a clip, and might just leave the whole club jumping as it slaps stupid strong.

Boys Noize - Killer (ft. Stephen A. Clark)
Last year Seal and Adamski's acid house classic got new life with an incredible orchestral touch from Pete Tong and Jules Buckley, now Boys Noize has brought it back to the executionary electronic sphere. Full of life with Clark's vocals and that perfect piano touch which opposes the exceptionally dark drums and cut-throat chords.  Some classics will never die and this one deserves to live on in eternity.

Purple Disco Machine @ CODA

Friday night I finally crossed out one of the names at the top of my must see list, as Purple Disco Machine brought his blend of disco funk, soul house to CODA. With disco's popularity seeing a surge, there's been few who have benefited more than PDM, who has been ablaze behind the decks and in the studio over the past year plus. He's been on big time BBC slots in Ibiza and the Essential mix, as well as authoring chart topping originals and remixes. Really this was the perfect storm, and it certainly came to life at CODA Friday night.

The atmosphere was palpable immediately upon arrival as the now typical all black outfits were much fewer and far between as the line at the door was littered with bright, floral patterns. People were giddy to get in and meet up with their friends, and questions as to what tracks Purple Disco Machine would drop arose as the anticipation to take the floor became more real. Upon entering we were welcomed with a new stacked wall of speakers at the back end of dancefloor, essentially enclosing the square with surround sound. CODA has always been known for good sound, but this certainly cements its status as the spot to be.

Already busy an hour before Purple Disco Machine's set, Simon Jain was doing a great job getting the groove started. Sporting a bright ice cream cone patterned tank top and flanked by half disco balls, Simon spun smooth disco house numbers full of string swells, funky bass lines and dope drum grooves. I nearly melted when he took to Yuksek's remix of L'Imperatrice "Vacances," yet this was just the beginning as PDM was soon to follow.

When the familiar face of Purple Disco Machine and his own floral outfit emerged in the booth and the transition became immanent, the crowd cheered thanking Simon Jain and roared in anticipation of PDM's presence on the decks. Building slow and strong the groove and warmth of his set was omnipresent as he offered the perfect blend of nostalgic feels and contemporary production potency. He broke out many of his own productions and a number of repackaged classic samples, all to great appeal.

One of my favourite things about disco and house sets is their long form, extended dance sections. These oppose the kinds of sets happening at Lost Lands this weekend, where its more about rapid-fire drops and banging bass blows. Here you can come and go more, drift in and out of tracks, always able to rejoin the reliable dependable four on the floor presence. You can explore the club and the space, no need to drop everything and run to the floor to go crazy to the drop, just play around how you like and let the music move you. And while Purple Disco Machine wasn't really following A-Trak and Todd Terry's "DJs Gotta Dance More," he was indeed in tune with the crowd, literally and figuratively playing with them. Not giving too much away I've posted a short playlist of some of the tracks I heard Friday, one of those wonderful nights where you truly get lost in the music. New Mixes from Dr Packer, Erol Alkan, Late Nite Tuff Guy and The Magician

Last week I saw the legendary Late Nite Tuff Guy's name above an hour long track entitled "Soul Mix 3" and got really excited. The recording from 2009, features the likes of Barry White, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye and many more. While it's a super cool insight into the mind of LNTG, its more about selection rather than transitions and easy flowing enjoyment. That said, today's search led me to 3 other mixes that bridge that gap better, so I've decided to showcase these live sets/mixtapes both for selection and mixing quality. They're all on the funky, disco end of the spectrum so if hard hitting stuff is what you're looking for you're out of luck. However you'll surely find some favourites, new and old. So let's get started, working back towards Late Nite Tuff Guy. Stream below and grab free downloads.

The Magician - Magic Tape 82
Finger firmly on the pulse, The Magician always has the hottest commodities in his show. He's got two of the new Disclosure tracks, his own remix of The Chainsmokers and the killer collabs of SG Lewis/AlunaGeorge and A-Trak/Todd Terry. The vibes are very laid back and groovy, before things pick up in the second half with FISHER's smash "Losing It," Riton's raucous "Up & Down" followed by Angelz "Yeah Yeah." While I'm sucker for disco, this deeper darker section may be my favourite.

Dr Packer Live @ Downtown Disco [25.08.18]*
So much great stuff in here. Dr Packer's ear is extraordinary, always finding the best edits and grooves. Strings and bongo stand strong throughout, while bass riffs beckon your feet to the floor. The extended nature of this set allows for longer more subtle transitions, and like the strings these swells are oh so sweet. Of course there's a number of his own productions, while other highlights include Late Nite Tuff Guy's "Startin' Somethin'," Todd Terry's "Love Sensation" and the Deep&Disco rework of "Stomp." If you're looking for pure pleasure look no further than the final half hour.

Erol Alkan (Disco Set) @ Homo Electric [25.08.18]
While only the final hour of Erol's "disco/italo/hi-nrg" set it's better than nothing. Funky, groovy and gritty, it is Erol through and through with his penchant for powerful records. Going for the classic killer "Right On Target" early, sets the stage for more high octane heat. There's a ton of bleepy brilliance in this more electronic-tilted disco mix with the likes of "Remember" and "Cybernetic Love." Hearing this hour gives a greater appreciation for the evolution of electronic from disco to house.

Late Nite Tuff Guy - Soul Mix 3
A considerable cool-down from the above sets, but still sublime. It is the opposite end of Erol's mix, the foundation from which those artists built upon. You don't have to look far to find the love at the core of this mix, as it emanates not just through the lyrics but the music that later inspired the edits used above. It's just so incredibly powerful to hear these tracks together especially after the other mixes. Watch out for the section of Prince, Roberta Flack and Minnie Ripperton: it's too nice.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: A-Trak ft. Todd Terry - DJs Gotta Dance More

There really is nothing like a meeting of legends, especially when they both span decades. That is the case with "DJs Gotta Dance More" from pre-millennium powerhouse and still sensational Todd Terry and his "spiritual godson" A-Trak. Out now on the latter's Fool's Gold, this is true New York house in the form of an ode to crate-digging and the connection between DJ and their dance floor (rather than disconnect we see so much today). It is funky fun and a reminder of the ethos that inspired the EDM we've come to know and love today.
