K Theory - Got Me

Buygore backed, San Francisco duo, K Theory prove that genre-bending tracks can actually be really damn good, with their latest offering, "Got Me," ahead of their forthcoming Electronic Hip Hop EP, dropping May 11. Their production from the perspective of both Hip Hop and Trap is on point and could easily pass as a DJ Mustard beat or GTA joint. The big and fat bass plays perfectly underneath the "so fine" vocals, and the slew of drops have totally got me mesmerized, saying "Damn, girl, where'd you find this?" While the first drop hits from a more standard trap tuning, the second bridges the gap, getting further turnt until the final, reprisal ditches much of the minimal trap considerations for throwback rave synths stabs. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: DJ Mustard ft. Travis Scott - Whole Lotta Lovin' (Grandtheft Remix)

Local legend Grandtheft delivered yet again, this time dropping a remix to the monster hit from DJ Mustard and Travis Scott. A week after playing two of his tracks on Bump In The Hump (his collab with Major Lazer "Number One" and Champagne Drip's remix of "Summer In The Winter") listen to that episode here, it gives me great pleasure to give the Radio Humber premiere to his latest exploit "Whole Lotta Lovin'" on this week's episode. Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam - Sex

The massively debated and previously unidentified Spinnin' Records track, that's racked up over 623 thousand plays in just over two weeks has finally been revealed as a collaboration between trios, LA's Cheat Codes and Dutch Kris Kross Amsterdam, and is available for download today.

Aptly titled "Sex," has Spinnin' flexing it's label strength, procuring the rights to sample Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex." The line "all the good things and bad things" immediately called me back to Akon's use of that line in Kid Ink's "Rewind." That's not the only similarity between the two either. The vibes of each elicit a warm floating feeling. Where "Rewind" leans more on DJ Mustard's synth sound, "Sex" is significantly more tropical, very similar to Major Lazer and DJ Snake's "Lean On." Furthermore, the first twenty seconds have a distinct resemblance to What So Not's "Touched." One commenter called it a rip off of Where Are U Now, Lean On, Sorry and What Do You Mean. While "Sex" no doubt seems to borrow facets from all of these tracks, it is its own distinct production. It is, at worst a mere mashup of covers, and at best, a finely crafted combination of some of the best pop music from the past year.

Of course this isn't anything new for Spinnin' Records, being the host label for chronic recyclers Vinai. A quick survey of Vinai's catalog of releases makes it seem like they've only ever started one project file and just keep minutely changing each production before sending them to Spinnin'. This seems all too common for the Dutch label which continually churns out repackaged, commercially leverage-able music, whether it's from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Oliver Heldens or the Lost Kings, the other act many commenters thought might have produced "Sex." This isn't to say that Spinnin' is without merit, it certainly holds a different footing, philosophy and purpose than Dirtybird, Ed Banger, mau5trap or even OWSLA. Whatever the case, you can now get your copy of "Sex" now.

Best Mixes Of 2015

One of my favourite things about electronic music is the prominence of mixes and the curating that comes along with being a DJ. There are so many different kinds of mixes, some that are heavily pre-produced and others that are created organically, on the spot, both are valuable and can serve different purposes at different times. I love listening to them any time I'm doing anything, whether it be at working, working out, travelling, playing video games, washing the dishes or doing yard work. Over the years I've become a fan of a variety of different programs, podcasts, annual festival promo mixes or just whatever live set I can find. After the break, I'll be posting a large number of my favourite mixes from a variety of places. But to whet your appetite, check out this one from Alison Wonderland at The Mixmag Lab in Los Angeles.

Her set at the Hoxton was definitely one of the best I saw all year, the most energetic and intense DJing, that's for sure. I always feel like the more into the music the DJ is the more the crowd gets into it, Alison get top marks for this. Always really appreciate DJs not sticking to one genre or sound, especially when more than an hour long.
