Enlightened Listening for December 13

The year is wrapping up and compilations and remix packages continue to abound. And while so many best of lists keep cropping up, good music keeps dropping and here it is in this week's Enlightened Listening. Things start with mau5trap's 9th edition of We Are Friends followed by two top notch techno EPs from two more top labels in Phantasy and Afterlife. We're then treated to eight new Hot Chip remixes which join the four previously released gems. Justin Jay then joins the fray with a quirky and killer EP worthy of Dirtybird before DJ Zinc and Chris Lorenzo get back together for a couple new joints. Things then turn to remixes as legends Four Tet and SOPHIE take on Skrillex and SONIKKU respectively. Finally the mysterious DnB entity Dawn Wall unleashes propulsive four-pack, Birdmask.

TERR - Tale Of Devotion (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)

Brazil and Norway have combined in an awesome display of disco by way of pleasure factory Phantasy Sound. TERR, who hails from Belo Horizonte, but now calls Berlin home, has just authored her first release on the legendary label with the taught yet expansive, ecstasy-inducing single "Tale Of Devotion." Even further extended, the b-side brings aboard Asker's Prins Thomas who transforms TERR's original into a space disco delight. Putting groovy percussion in as the new bed for TERR's tech to bounce on, the general vibe of "Tale Of Devotion" remains intact, while Thomas sends the track soaring into space. It floats fancy free, shining through its strings and dazzling through its digital delivery as though dreamt up by an artificial intelligence. It will install itself in your ears, especially through the vocal mixes as they whisper wantonly, wrapping around your aural canal. Set a course for deep space disco aboard this sublime starship and pick up your copy of "Tale Of Devotion" here.

Joshua James - Coarse (Justin Cudmore Remix)

Some pairings make perfect sense, yet further still, some trios top that. Case in point, the most recent release on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound imprint. Joshua James' Coarse brings the brilliance in design and delivery that we've come to love from the ambitious alternative electronic output. However that's only two sides of the triangle, as we've yet to add Brooklyn's Justin Cudmore into the equation. Certainly the original is awesome in its own rights, however Cudmore's contributions add an extra allure, stretching the track into an epic acid journey. The movement remains massive, however apart from the physical movement on the dance-floor, the lion's share comes internally, as you navigate the seas of thought in your mind. Enlightened Listening for February 8

Fridays never disappoint, but this one seems special with a number of my favourite names returning with new releases. Henrik The Artist once again puts on a clinic of unique quality. Paul Mond plays with our heart strings. Camo & Krooked kill it on UKF. Jake Robertz follows with a sick six track EP.  We then change gears for two, top-notch, uber-cool creations from Red Axes and ABSOLUTE.. Then comes MK with yet another inspired remix, which leads into a genius, jaw-dropping original from Haywyre. Finally, PINEO & LOEB drop the best cover album of the year in ELEVATION. Following in the footsteps of Truncate and Yaleesa Hall, George Fitzgerald has remixed Kamera's "Consignia." Released this past week on Phantasy Sound, the original track begs for Fitzgerald's brilliant brand of technological theatrics. The long sweeping movements that enjoy magnificent momentum shifts and resplendent, ringing tones, colour "Consignia" all kinds of industrialized awesome. The key to the quality of Fitzgerald's production is the slow burning, suspense ridden and bubbling build that culminates in a no nonsense, combination of all elements. When each sounds plays its role, perfectly falling into unison, you've got yourself a gold-star, George Fitzgerald production.
