Enlightened Listening for February 12

It's the weekend, which means it's time to warp the week's releases in a bow with another edition of Enlightened Listening. Headlining this three and a half hour playlist is the milestone tenth edition of mau5trap's We Are Friends compilation series. It features label stalwarts ATTLAS, EDDIE and No Mana, alongside even more veteran talent in Mord Fustang, Pig&Dan, Tommy Trash and Wolfgang Gartner. And yes, deadmau5 does indeed lead the otherwise alphabetized affair. Staying with the longer form releases, MPH leaves his mark on Night Bass with a brilliant debut there, while ten artists enter into ill.Gates' Producer Dojo for a couple fists full of fire remixes. Aside from those three releases, we're left with thirteen individual tracks. Of the standout singles, I'm particularly fond of the piano in the expansive beauty of "WITHIN ME" and the chromatic resplendence of "Beyond Belief" & "Pacific." It probably doesn't need to be said, but don't miss the Jamie Jones or TSHA remixes, nor the Sleepnet or OAKK singles, if you're into stylish & immersive tracks. Enlightened Listening for July 10

Back to our normal Spotify format for this week's edition of Enlightened Listening. The weather is still at its peak so I'll keep things short. My favourite labels had a big day here as All Day I Dream, This Never Happened, Anjuna, Afterlife and Night Bass all deliver the quality I've come to expect. There's another taste of Tensnake's forthcoming album in new single "Strange Without You." Prins Thomas appears twice, first alongside Lindstrøm and then again with an epic album in Træns (which I can't wait to get properly lost in). Like the latter, Low:r's EP will certainly help me power over the hills on my next bike ride, as will the equally awesome Ekcle track "Sosen Yahn." Top 100 Tracks Of 2019: 100-76

Starting today through Friday (with a break on New Years Day), I'll be revealing my list of the "Top 100 Tracks Of 2019." The following is my disclaimer, as I feel it important to preface this kind of list with some insight into its creation and the methodology behind it. While I spent a lot of time seriously pouring through this year of music, this is not a really a serious endeavour. No one was polled. Sales and streams are irrelevant. This is merely my fun way of sharing the tracks and artists that made my year better, in hopes they do the same for you. The rankings are not scientific or even fair, rather they are simply a reflection of how strongly I felt these tracks and how much praise I felt they deserved.

You'll notice the thread of disco/funk continues from last year, as once again it dominated my consumption. But once again you'll notice I touch on a variety of genres, while sticking to the brand of this blog, which is indeed a reflection of my personal preferences and ideals. There's a lot of pop music, but the list is largely electronic and dance dominant.

Finally, I will once again say that this is by no means an exhaustive list; there are without a doubt exceptional tunes that somehow failed to make the cut. However, onward and, in this case, downward, from tracks 100 to 76 we go. Find the Soundcloud playlist here and Spotify here.

#100: Robotaki - Quasar
As so often seems to be the case I'm called most strongly to the b-side of a release. Here "Quasar" captures my attention with a truly dizzying display of musical craftsmanship. Robotaki rifles off a resplendent mix of electronic and organic instruments that reminds me of both the extraordinary quality of early future bass and the indie rock energy of Erol Alkan, specifically his "Forever Dolphin Love" remix.

#99: High Contrast - Going Up
The first in a long line of DnB tracks in this year's countdown. The consistent quality of High Contrast is on full display here with this crisp, crackling cut. It's both exceedingly beautiful and seemingly simplistic, while somehow still feeling fresh and exciting after a plenitude of plays.

#98: DROELOE - Only Be Me (Duskus Remix)
Immediately heavy on the heart, this one is actually brilliantly buoyant. The swinging nature of the drop is sure to leave you swooning while the whole thing oozes poppy positivity. While a few years ago I would've said bitbird is one of my favourite labels, I can no longer say that. However this mix seems to have found the perfect balance between their sappy saccharine ethos and sharp, catchy synths.

#97: Nelly - Air Force Ones (Klutch Remix)
While I don't often get into tracks primarily for a single sound, this remix and its rattling bass is so banging that I cannot help myself. The drops are stupid dope and the rest of the track is built with enough ear catching punctuations that it deserves recognition in a list like this. It would be a banger with the first drop alone, but a progressive second drop and its sensational use of Nelly make it a can't miss.

#96: Sub Focus - Solar System
With a name like "Solar System" you'd expect some serious magnitude and Sub Focus did not disappoint. This one hurdles along at light-speed and if you go along with it, you're apt to burn up like a supernova. A lot of electronic music has an outer-space, futuristic feel and this is most definitely one of this year's best, most banging examples.

Fremda - Stream

As far as labels go not many can match the eclectic quality of Fool's Gold. Want fresh rap? They got it. Game changing electronic? That too. Not only can they boast incredible releases, but somehow they are able to source them from rising talents (see Danny Brown and Madeaux for example). Here they've jumped on new mysterious European duo Fremda for just their second ever EP. Our first taste of forthcoming Login EP comes in funky retro single "Stream." Immediately alluring, the giant grooves have a gravity of their own, pulling you into the super cool soundscape that plays out like a nighttime ride on a Tron Light Cycle. Don't let its robotic and technological aesthetic trick you however, "Stream" does indeed have a human heart whose pulse you can hear throughout, ultimately endearing itself through its delightful design and fulsome feel. Enlightened Listening for July 19

Once again I'm overwhelmed by the amount of music this Friday (and the rest of the week) brought. So, just as with last week's Enlightened Listening I've got to keep it short and simply draw focus to a few of the 16 releases showcased in the playlist below. Early on there's a couple cool orchestral and orchestral-adjacent cuts, each incredibly well produced. Later on we get Baltra's brilliant and massive album Ted which I believe would play perfectly as you cruise the streets at night. Directly following that we get funky with Sparkee and Tuxedo, the former being absolutely fantastic through all four parts. "The Kids" has already become an anthem of mine this summer, and I totally foresee "Want Your Love" doing the same. After those two funk fiestas come three jaw droppers. "Heaven" is instantly one of my favourite tracks of the year, and why not, its got everything. The same goes for "No Price" which can boast Chromeo and Dr Packer on a single track. Rounding out that trio, Madeaux comes through with perhaps my favourite production of his in "I Want You." Once again he absolutely slays the sub-bass, sending shivers down my spine. After that is an unadulterated foursome of fire progressing from the power of Dillon Nathaniel through to X&G's electrifying design. All that and more below.

Golden Features - Worship (Madeaux Remix)

The masterful Madeaux just followed up his "Black Magic Woman" with a ritualistic remix of Golden Features "Worship." An unholy, ominous feeling oozes from the get-go and is perfectly paired with the dark vocals and lurid low end. The whole track is murky and moody with each element delivering a dark, foreboding feeling. This is especially evident in Madeaux's treatment of the vocals which are almost drawn out or excised like a Dementor's kiss, leaving the speaker devoid of a soul, hauntingly hollow. "Worship" has become further warped with witchcraft, moving it from the future of the original to a dimly lit, distant past. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I could easily see this working wonders in a horror film, especially of the found footage supernatural variety, even if it were just a fan made trailer. Enlightened Listening for May 12

A couple days late, but these tracks absolutely had to be shared. This week's Enlightened Listening gets underway with The Shapeshifters and Chic vocalist Kimberly Davis and the brilliant, biting brass of Glitterbox joint "Life Is A Dancefloor." Up next Paul Woolford unleashes an exceptional piano-led take on Hot Chip's heater "Hungry Child." The unstoppable force of Kölsch then ups the intensity with his remix of "Stella." Leading us further towards techno with a touch of midtempo, mau5trap once again wows with their recent releases through Sian's Ultraviolet EP 1.0. Marking the midway point in the playlist, Dimitri Veimar dazzles with 3 new originals alongside Dean Grenier's remix of the EP's title track "Planet." Changing gears, Pham returns with a diverse and delectable mixtape in Nostalgia. And indeed it is nostalgia you get upon seeing the title of Madeaux's massive "Black Magic Woman," a production worthy of one Carlos Santana. Next up Ninajirachi gives "303" some much needed movement, progression and captivating sound design, taking it from blah to banger. Finally, Night Bass bring us seven bangers worthy of their high standard; standouts include: "Desert Moon," "Killers" and "Fresh Prince." Enlightened Listening For October 12

At over three hours of music, this week's edition of Enlightened Listening runs through a couple incredible albums, funk, future bass, disco, house, bass house, bass, future and more. Some of my favourite names old and new, and some of the most banging club killers of the year. This playlist is stacked not just with heat, but with some of the best story-telling, picture-painting releases of the year. Embark on the musical journey that is this playlist and read brief descriptions of its contents below.

Harrison - Apricity
This 11 track offering is proof of the Toronto talent's mastery of full length projects, sewing several themes together through a range of buttery smooth deliveries. Like the album art, the whole thing shimmers serene.

Conro - All Eyes On Me
You would think after the few prolific years he's had recently we'd have been graced with an album, but here we are with the debut, an undeniable nine track treasure. At times it's thoughtful and restrained, others it's all out funky fire, future bass.

Moullinex ft. Georgia Anne Muldrow - Say It Slow (Wild & Free Remix)
Beautiful, brilliant groove with radiant synths; a perfect warm up piece. A musical marvel.

Humans - Breakfast With Liz
An epic always moving masterpiece. Sneakily, yet supremely satisfying.

CONFESSION (v/a) - Alchemy 3
Compilations are not normally this good, except when it comes to CONFESSION who seem to have conquered the act. Diverse levels of CONFESSION's dark sound and house's various delivery methods. Bass, filter and disco, dominate the six tracks, offering up equally excellent quality.

Purple Haze ft. James New - Fall In (Zonderling Remix)
Zonderling really have a way, and when it hits, it really works. A wildly infectious drop that just oozes all kinds of nostalgic energy, reminding me of the electro awesomeness around 2010.

Lifelike & Kris Menace - Discopolis 2.0 (Sander van Doorn Remix)
Speaking of 2010 vibes, this classic gets a reboot from one of the longest running talents and king of that time. More of a jacked up edit than anything, but it's a banger either way.

Propane - Arbusto
Can't say I've heard any Propane before, but they're clearly flammable because this one could certainly have the dance floor explode. A no nonsense banger.

Moksi - Legit
Speaking of fire on the floor, there won't be many survivors after this weapon goes off. The vocals (both sampling and rapping) really bring this monster to life.

Jack Beats - The Remedy
The fact that these two are still making the same conscionable quality they were 10 years ago is one of my favourite things about the scene. There's a pocket for them to pick and they nail it every time. Big bad, dark and dirty wobs rule as these four tracks are ready to rock plenty a party.

ABSOLUTE. - Malfunction
One of my favourite artists of the year on likely my label of the year, this EP is like icing on the cake. Five diverse yet equally excellently crafted techno club churners. Absolutely awesome atmosphere.

TroyBoi vs Pete & Bas - Do One
The first of two TroyBoi productions in back to back days. His genius will leave you agape as he flips the table at 1:28, yet manages to keep working his magic around the duo's vocal delivery.

thook - Natural Instincts
Of all the incredible sound designers on this list no one can knock this guy off his perch. Instantly engulfing, each of these five tracks whisk you away to a foreign land, sending shivers down your spine with a wild array of animated sounds. An out of this world offering.

TroyBoi - Frustrated (ft. Destiny)
Another dazzling display of TroyBoi's god-like talent. His playful progression around already awesome grooves make every production a treat. Give this guy a couple elements and he'll go off.

Madeaux - LIMBO
If you thought his creative well was dry after the unreal Burn already this year, think again. This trio of tracks further cements his status as an artist to watch. Moody masterfully crafted cool.

Enlightened Listening for March 23

Fridays never disappoint and this has got to be the best ever we've ever seen. I've compiled a list of 28 singles, EPs, and albums for this week's edition of Enlightened Listening. There's literally everything from techno and trance, to house, club, disco, DnB, and more. Big names like Diplo, Noisia, Benny Benassi and newcomers that are sure to impress. Unlike previous weeks everything here was released today and today only. The playlist is absolutely massive, running 145 tracks, and over 10 hours. But you've got all weekend to check it out, so take your time or skip through, but as always enjoy!

Enlightened Listening for March 9

The digging has been done, I've collected a number of tracks throughout the week, and some new ones fresh off the press, of course being Friday, so here we are with another edition of Enlightened Listening. While there's numerous EPs and albums out today, I've stuck to singles for this post. There's highly anticipated remixes from Hunter Siegel and Four Tet, a stunner from Madeaux, and some temperature changing trap from names that are new to me. Find all it cataloged in the playlist below, read mini-descriptions following that, and grab your free downloads where available (marked by asterisks).

SOPHIE - Faceshopping (Madeaux Remix)*
The impossible task of wrangling and remixing SOPHIE has finally been achieved. Again Madeaux has treated us to some of the strongest sound design around. His reconstruction of the previously pulverizing track is truly a treat to behold. Special shout outs have to go to Cecile Believe's vocals and Madeaux's treatment of them in the second half of the track.

Big Mak - Mr. Downtown
If this sounds familiar then you've got an excellent ear. Big Mak has taken to the soundtrack of That Thing You Do! and flipped the fictional Freddy Fredrickson track into a fantastic trap lounger.

Yuto - Dear Africa*
The plucks and percussion combined in this trap joint are absolutely fantastic. You'll get bent and twisted to this on the floor, and that's before the drops which will have you writhing rhythmically. Wow!

Ekali & Zhu - Blame (Hunter Siegel Bootleg)*
Premiered at No Neon's 3rd anniversary, shortly after the original's release. That should give you some insight into how much it spoke to the Dark Plur himself. The roughness of that early version still stands strong, but the tweaked and polished final product makes this even more hype.

HXRY - Chicago*
Sneaky deep grooves that seem to bubble up out of nowhere. Just try to name all the samples.

Twinscale - Pandora (ft. Bobby Saint)*
Rapid fire groove that keeps bumping, forcing your feet to the dance-floor. The little cuts and sweeps add a level of excellence that really makes the instrumental special. However, the addition of Bobby Saint's vocals are what put this track over the top.

BICEP - Opal (Four Tet Remix)
These two names alone ought to have you drooling, and boy is this take on "Opal" appetizing. I dare say an instant classic, that just locks you in, making the eight minute cut seem like a mere moment.

First Love - Don't Say Goodnight (FunkyDeps Edit)*
Fantastically fun freak-out of an edit. The horns, bass groove, and keys are top notch, but when you add in those drop dead gorgeous vocals you're talking about an all time great cut. How's your heart feel?

Cyclops & Briden - Perseus*
Ending with a bang, this track absolutely nails the balance between future bass and hard trap. Hits with much of same intensity as RL Grime, that is surrounded by sublime swells of future bass. Brilliant.

Enlightened Listening for February 16

The last few Fridays I've been compiling playlists of new music for the weekend, so today I've decided to give it a name and make it a routine. I present the first proper edition of Enlightened Listening. The name is a simple tie to the blog itself, which features all dance and electronic genres under the sun, as does this list and the others ahead of its naming today. I should also state that while I use the term enlightened, I'm not suggesting that each of these are the pinnacle of production but rather some creative cultivations on the endless road to musical enlightenment. So once again here we go, find the tracks in no particular order, note the free downloads marked by asterisk and reviews at the bottom.

ATLiens - Interstellar (ft. Sara Skinner)
Fantastic mix of fearsome fire in the incredibly twisted trap drops countering Skinner's savory vocals.

Madeaux - The Wave (ft. BRUX)
Another captivating creation from Madeaux that fits its title to a tee. I can't quite put my finger on what this reminds me of most, but certainly the likes of Jack Beats, Mr. Oizo, Boys Noize and others.

NuKid - Hustlin'*
The more I hear from NuKid the more convinced I am that he sits atop the crowded crossroads of deep, g-, and bass house. The combination of grit, drive, and bounce of this track is mindblowing.

AOTA - D Sides*
Five classics (or soon to be classics) twisted to fit AOTA's particular brand of deep house. Likely your eyes are drawn to "Satisfaction" or "Bodak Yellow" and while they all deliver a good groove get your feet going, I'm most struck by the Borgore remix, which like the original goes ridiculously hard.

BETON - Directions (ft. Wevie Stonder)
My most anticipated track of the year. I've gushed about it following Tiga's New Names Mix and again when the B-Side was released (here). Crank it to up 11 and shake the whole house. MASSIVE!

Robotaki - Limbo (ft. SHOR)
Seems like every new production from Robotaki raises the bar further and further. It's the perfect mix of T.E.E.D., SBKTRKT, Chet Faker and future bass when it was fresh coming out of Australia. Beyond beautiful, fantastically funky, smooth and sublime. Oh my days, might just have a little cry.

Max Olsen - Sub Zero (ft. JC)*
Expect to be moved by this one. Deep bass bonks and sweeping grooves. And how about those lyrics?

SAKIMA - Death Is In The Air
Maybe it's just the album art but I can't get The Cure out of my head. There may be nothing I enjoy more than dark lyrics with bright uplifting grooves. This is gives new meaning to scary good.

Minnesota - Hilow (Charlesthefirst Remix)*
Serious get down with these drops. This is atmospheric bass brilliance with all kinds of crazy elements.

Anna Lunoe - Hyperhouse Tour Megamix

The number of quality tours going around this fall is perhaps unprecedented. Whether it's Mija's FK A Genre, Destructo's Renegade, or Anna Lunoe's Hyperhouse, the slew of DJs on each is absolutely awesome. In anticipation of her tour starting next week, Anna just dropped a 35 minute mega mix, overflowing with some of the hottest tracks from her incredibly deep roster of DJs, including Vindata and Sliink who will both be at The Hoxton, Saturday November 5th. Of course the mix also includes Lunoe's latest, "Radioactive," Sleepy Tom's breakout banger, "Be Right There," and their collaborative effort, "Pusher." Then there's some magical Mija, including her remix of A-Trak and Tommy Trash's "Lose My Mind," Vindata's "Own Life" and their smash hit collab, "Better." The 12 city tour starts October 13th in Santa Barbara and works its way up the west coast through Vancouver before restarting in Washington DC, November 3rd, with a few east coast stops before heading to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. Filet Mignon Volume 4

The time for massive compilation from French label Record Record's Filet Mignon series has finally arrived, with it's fourth installment, including tracks from Madeaux, DZZ, Dombresky, Masayoshi Iimori and Birdy Nam Nam, among others. I've been waiting for this ever since I first heard, what I called at the time, the track of the summer, Point Point's "True Summer." The aim of this series is to shine a spotlight on "tomorrow's new talents" with the backing of more experienced artists, through a coherent and clear artistic direction. There's no question Record Record has achieved this feat, as they've lead me to discover talents like LigOne, Araatan, Aazar and Valy Mo. They were able to get my attention by giving San Holo's "BWU" a place in their third installment, and it was because of it's inclusion that I found two of my favourite tracks, the aforementioned LigOne's "Uprising," and the Little Freaky Things, L'homme aux 4 Lettres' "in2." Once again they've compiled a great combination of tracks, working together to create a consistent and thematically succinct 15 track album. I can truthfully say there are no holes in this massive compilation. Each track works both on its own but truly together in the album. When you can start with a Madeaux, DZZ collaboration and only build upon that foundation with each following track, you know you've got greatness on your hands. Devoted To God's "Burning Bridges" is worthy of worship not only for its pious production quality but Goldilox's voluminous vocals.

The following track from rising star Dombresky is yet another awesome track from him, and perhaps my favourite of the collection, with its swinging strings, soaring in loving beauty. Nomak's "What About Us" showcases a naughty and nasty touch that feels as though the couple in question is bickering in some infernal give and take. Pyramid follows that up with a rave worthy get down track, that just begs unsuspecting listeners to cry out, "Damn son, where'd you find this?" Asan & Halpe's "Amber" is an incredible piece of production prowess that's cinematically cool and sure to sweep you off your feet.

The enigmatic Masayoshi Iimori once again delivers a track that seems miles ahead of anything even the most future forward producers are making. You can be sure DJs the world around will be adding "Down" into their sets for surefire screwfaces and cries of "What in the world is this?" The following track from Birdy Nam Nam is perhaps the best example of the importance of track placement, there is an inevitable let down following Masayoshi's mastery and "Sad Boys Club" emotes that so brilliantly with the downtrodden, depths of his sorrowful synth work.

The aptly named "Don't Let Them Stop You," leads the compilation out of despair, before BeazyTymes "Get Hit" beams it back into oblivion, and in my opinion ought to be named "Get Lit." Once you are indeed 'lit', the best thing for you is a refreshing, cool breeze, and there's no track that better elicits that feeling more than Point Point's "True Summer." The following track from Brunelle, "Chemistry," rivals Dombresky for my favourite of the collection. As though crafted by a scientist in a lab, it truly lives up to its name, as a perfect mixture of so many of the elements we've heard in this massive compilation; groovy, beautiful and as dance-able as anything in Filet Mignon.

The penultimate track from Araatan, "Zereglee," utilizes a guitar and piano better than any electronic track I've heard and runs so brilliantly into the final boss track of Ateph Elidja's "TRRN." Things turn violent as it seems even the artists don't want the compilation to end. Once again utilizing cinematic sweeps, "TRRN" seems to be a triumphant and beautiful finale that caps off an amazing collection of tracks with an echoing slamming of a door, until the next installment.

I'm truly in awe of Record Record and this incredible album, not just because of the sheer number of great tracks, or their unbelievable cohesiveness, but the way they've been so thoughtfully compiled and showcase so many talented artists in a way that other labels can only dream of.
