Enlightened Listening for October 2

We've made it to another month, and since it's the first Friday, that means it's Bandcamp day! Once again Bandcamp is waiving its revenue share today, passing 100% of all purchases to the artists. And again that means I'm doing an all Bandcamp edition of Enlightened Listening. Find all 16 releases (listed alphabetically) below and check out the following paragraphs for highlights and play-by-play.

A recommendation from Boy 8-Bit opens the onslaught of new tunes with Adrian Carter's "Suzette." Next up is an uber-cool album from Cinephonic who delivers some stunning jazz in a fabulous cinematic style. The first of two from the Defected family follows as Endor samples Beethoven for a cheeky house affair. Freeza Chin then gets icy with a five-pack of beats inspired by his time in Hawaii. Another equatorial inspiration follows as Hammer makes use of Costa Rican recordings, combining them with his synths to make a mystical medley of disco, house and techno.

Finally, Horse Meat Disco's album is here! Gracing Glitterbox, Love And Dancing is exactly the kind of uplifting and revitalizing music we need right now. Hot Chip keep things moving with a massive (mix) album of their own. Late Night Tales features three new exclusive tracks and a cover version, alongside a mix of their favourite euphoric and melancholic tracks. Keeping disco on the tip, The Vision follow with a remix (and dub/edit) of Jakatta and Seal's sublime "My Vision."

Flipping the playlist on its head, we roll towards a handful of harder rocking releases. First up, John Rolodex delivers a six-pack of sensational DnB joints. Lunice then gets mean with Miko through thrash and bash affair "Calm Down." Ghetto and juke guide the next release as Martyn Bootyspoon re-releases four banging bootlegs with proceeds going to Molly De Wind, who suffered domestic violence at the hands of Vanity Press Records' David Marroquin (story here). Two more brooding bootleg/remix/edit packs follow as Monstergetdown and OAKK deliver jungle/techno/bassline and bass/hip hop/juke, respectively.

The first of the final three releases in this week's playlist comes from Ryan Hemsworth who delivers another edition of his acclaimed edit series. Here he takes on Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, Hillary Duff and many more. And act quick as this is only going to be online for 24 hours (as he said at 12:04 AM EDT). The penultimate release then follows as Kudatah delivers a massive 22 track compilation of ambient, DnB, jungle, techno and vaporwave. Finally, Wraz wraps things up with two ominous and depth-defying dub/DnB hybrids.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: We Are Friends Vol. 8

The holidays are done and Bump In The Hump is back to new music as we return to the 8th season tonight. Over the course of the break things indeed slowed down, but there were still several high powered releases, however none could match the magnitude of mau5trap's 8th edition of We Are Friends. Boasting an epic 35 tracks and more than three and a half hours of music, it is jam packed with fan favourites and new names. Of course there's many you'll recognize from not just Bump In The Hump, but this blog in general, including ASHE, ATTLAS, Eekkoo, Rhett and more. Stream the massive compilation below and catch multiple cuts from it love on tonight's episode starting at 7PM EST.While the holidays brought time off, they also brought countless gifts, resulting in one of the most free download laden episodes in quite some time. Main Course dropped their annual Holiday Pack, while others opted to release bootlegs and originals on their own. There's banging house from BLANSH & MAP, grime from Wraz & Motus, another top notch take from Bishu & Luca Lush, and an epic 5 way collab featuring Festivillainz & INF1N1TE. Hear all that and more tonight from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber and/or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: SUBstance - Gunshot

Earlier this month we had Sherbrooke bass boys Wraz and Motus deliver their episode of My Mixtape (here), and today we get another taste of the tremendous talent in that Eastern Township. Like his killer collabs in that mix, "Gunshot" again showcases SUBstance's strong sound design and potent production abilities. The drum work is dope, setting the scene for scary sub-bass swells. While it may be a freebie, as thanks for 1500 Soundcloud followers, there's no denying its fearsome quality. Get locked and loaded for tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump with the download via ToneDen, here. You can be sure to find this track as part of the fire finale tonight, which also includes a new Motus track as well as some hard psy-trance, DnB, trap and grime. And as continues to be the case, our Canadians are diving further into the disco and funk feels with another dose of Spacedisco, Chromeo and some surreal Robotaki. We also look ahead to four shows happening this weekend, featuring Frustra, MC Flipside, Above & Beyond, and Chris Lake. Capping the two hours comes a clip of my interview with Bill Slinnton, whose guest mix airs Saturday night at 11.

Finally, don't forget Bump In The Hump has a new time slot, moving back an hour to 7 PM. Otherwise everything remains the same. Stream live via Radio Humber (here) and listen back via Mixcloud, here.

Time For Another Playlist

Upon the suggestion of Brayden of Audiation, I've decided it was time to make another playlist, and while I believe he was recommending a curated playlist on Spotify, that's not really what I'm about. My focus isn't even properly a true focus yet a scattered selection of just about everything under the ever growing dance and electronic umbrella. And while I've got nothing against Spotify, Soundcloud is still the place for discovery and uninterrupted listening experiences (although I've heard of people encountering ads I've never experienced them myself, perhaps due to my adblockers). Anyway, I've taken up this suggestion and put together a little list of new tracks that I enjoy and think you might too. Of course it runs from dubstep and trap, to future bass, techno and everything in between. So there should be something for everyone but perhaps not, whatever. Playlist and short write-ups below.
Those tracks with an asterisk are available for free download.

LIZ - Queen Of Me
Been wondering where Wave Racer has been lately and I guess this is our answer. You can't deny his influence in the rise of future bass and it's proof that classic future bass can still sound fantastic all these years later. Add LIZ's always enjoyable lyricism and flow and you've got a perfect pop production.

Clarian - Under The Gun (Tiga Remix)
Tiga always wins no matter what he's doing. The atmosphere of the opening is so strong, and the slow burning, groove build godly. I can't be the only one who feels a little Toto "Africa" in there, can I?

Robotaki - Together We're Screwed (ft. Nevve)
Not many mix real instrumentation and electronic influences together as well as Robotaki. Nevve's voice is spectacular, and the way it winds around all the elements of the drop is quite simply genius.

Wraz - Reefa
No that's not actually a rasta delivering the vocals, that's Motus. An incredible production reminding us of dub's homeland. Truthfully I'm not the biggest dub fan, but when it's done like this I can't turn away.

Monolith Slip - TOKUGAWA*
Bassline footwork with a bedsqueak twist? What is this glorious heaven I've stumbled into? Just wow.

Blaize - Boujee*
Just when you thought we were done with "Bad & Boujee" this banging bass/g-house flip finds just the right mix between the original's allure and a dope driving drop. Especially well placed vocal chops.

Hanz Zimmer - Time (Paradoks Edit)*
The undeniable majesty of Hanz Zimmer rebuilt around a shuffling deep house groove. The shimmering top line is what's sold me on Paradoks' new version. Playful yet full of poise.

Mikes Revenge - Fire*
The most unabashedly banging track in this list. But that's not to say it's all heavy and no heart. The ringing bells are beautiful, especially in opposition to the turnt trap delivery. The amalgam of all things heavy in each of the differing drops keeps you on your toes and leaves your head spinning.

Mary J. Blige - Just Fine (Baron Fields Rework)*
Deliciously funky and groovy flip with some stunning vocal chops and synth stabs. You're definitely going to have to give this more than one play to get the gist of what Baron's done with this. Wild.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Post Malone - I Fall Apart (Young Bombs Remix)

Just last week I played Benzi's edit of Post Malone's "I Fall Apart" as mixed with Ekali and QUIX's take on Porter Robinson's "Language." This week our own Young Bombs have added their names to the ever growing list of Post Malone remixers with their take on his latest viral sensation. As I said on last week's show these are by far my favourite Post Malone vocals, and I'm glad I get to bring them to you again this week. I've been on the Young Bombs bandwagon after first hearing their remix of Katelyn Tarver, and this may be my new favourite of theirs. They've let the guitar guide the track alongside Malone's crooning, before building a brilliant and emotive future bass drop. The chord choices only further cut to the core, making this one of the most gut churning yet beautiful productions in recent memories. Grab your copy for free via Hive and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight. This mix of gut churning beauty is a theme tonight, with new tracks from Miles Away, Bishu, and Vanic, all supplying it in droves. Of course there's also pure bangers and dope grooves from the likes of Hunter Siegel, Hanz Ford, Keys N Krates and Landyn. We've also got a hearty helping of disco as we look ahead to a stacked lineup Friday with Spacedisco's Winter Warmup at One Loft featuring Hatiras, Vincent Caira, LeBaron James and others (RSVP/Tickets). As if that weren't enough, friends of the show Loud Luxury are back in town taking over Factory Fridays at UNIUN (RSVP/Tickets). Rounding out the trio of shows Friday night is TOKiMONSTA who hits Velvet Underground with support from fellow friend, Dom Dias (RSVP/Tickets). Finally, in a fitting end to the fire finale there's a new track from Toast and Motus, the latter of which joins Wraz for the first B2B episode of My Mixtape. Hear my interview with them tonight, ahead of their episode Saturday January 20th at 11 PM EST. All of this and more on Bump In The Hump, Radio Humber, live from 6-8 PM EST here and cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud.

Bump In The Hump: October 11 (Season 7, Episode 2)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Wraz - Spin

There's just something about Canadians and dark bass tracks. Whether it's a result of the weather, lack of sunlight or something entirely different, there's no shortage of sinister sounds being produced by Canucks. Of course there's the queen of darkness herself, Rezz, and No Neon don, Hunter Siegel, but equally ominous and infernal is Sherbrooke's Wraz. We've heard him twice here on Bump In The Hump, but this week he's back with his most inventive and ingenious production to date. "Spin" was created entirely through his recordings of a fidget spinner. All the elements: kicks, bass, snare; everything is the sound of a fidget spinner, not one single synth. This is an incredible achievement, very much so in line with the ethos of electronic music; it's about experimentation and the manipulation of atypical sounds and instruments into a more typical track. Wraz's passion for producing is clear, not just in "Spin," but the relentless rate at which new tracks are released. Stream it below and follow him here.As you might expect, there's a hearty helping of heinous and all around dark tracks on Bump In The Hump tonight. But fear not, there's a sizable serving of sublime and soulful disco and funky feels. Big names include Pat Lok, Tennyson, Daphni, Ramzoid, Snails, CRaymak and Botnek. Plus we look forward to a couple incredible shows with a remix of Sinjn Hawke, and a killer beat from Eytan Tobin, who joins the Fractal Fantasy bill Friday night. In addition I've got a remix of Keys N Krates who join the star studded lineup for RELIEF, tonight at Velvet Underground. As always you won't want to miss the epic amount of new music from our great, albeit aphotic, Canadians. Bump In The Hump runs live from 6-8 PM EDT on Radio Humber, stream here, or after the fact via Mixcloud, here.
