Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Oliver Wickham - Indigo

Just as we have done the last two weeks, tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump begins with an extended section of progressive house and techno. While said section is largely built around mau5trap's milestone 10th edition of We Are Friends, there are back-to-back extended mixes whose releases I've been waiting for anxiously. Previously only available as part of the Anjunadeep 12 mix, Monday marked the full release of Oliver Wickham's breathtaking affair "Indigo." Sending shivers down your spine through scintillating synth sparkles that percolate out of the hazy, simmering atmosphere, this single is sure to warm listeners to the Wickham way. In fact, it's not the only time he appears in tonight's episode, as we also enjoy the ASHE remix of his Crimsen & Feyln collab, "Grey Skies." Enlightened Listening for January 29

While weighing in a hair lighter than last week's hefty harvest, this week's Enlightened Listening is no featherweight. Spanning 20 releases, this 82 track six-hour odyssey is built around a ridiculous number of remixes and a couple killer compilation/mixtapes. Of the latter two, The Magician brings together an all-star lineup for his milestone Magic Tape, #100, while James Grant & Jody Wisternoff curate a killer second CD for Anjunadeep 12. Both deserve full plays, and that's easy with both, as they're each released in seamless, mixed form as well. Now, as far as remixes are concerned, there are plenty to highlight. I love the 'Foals' remix of Everything Everything, especially as, with the Gentle Dom remix two weeks ago, it paves a unique path. BRONSON again score some sick remixes with Hayden James, obli and Patrick Topping delivering a diverse trio. Similarly stacked, the Aluna Renaissance (Remixes) boasts brilliance from the likes of UNIIQU3, TSHA and The Martinez Brothers. Capping the remix conversation, Olof Dreijer, Dimitri From Paris, and ASHE, work wonders with "Monument," "Finally Ready," and "Grey Skies," respectively. ANII - Let's All Make Love

Yesterday, Anjunadeep offered up the 15th edition of their Explorations compilation series showcasing six rising talents, half label veterans and half fresh faces. Alphabetically first on the list, ANII (a staple of Afterlife, Kompakt, Parquet and others) may be making her Anjuna debut, but she is no new name to fans of the borderlands between progressive house and techno. Her offering "Let's All Make Love" marries the two subsets marvellously, crafting an equally groovy, gritty and euphoric odyssey. Mixing a mountain of instrumentation together, ANII's use of both organic and electronic sounds is truly awesome, giving her track a fabulously fresh feel and incredible depth of character. Surrounding the crisp, echoing claps and the metallic grit of the bass guitar with all kinds of masterful movement, the seven and half minute epic cruises along effortlessly and at times, rapturously. It's not hard to feel, or fall into, the love in this track. In fact, ANII succeeds in filling "Let's All Make Love" with a wicked warmth and powerful passion that, whether catching it in a mix or playing it on its own, will have you hankering for more. Fairchild - Touch The Sun (Nox Vahn Revisit)

A VIP mix five years in the making, Nox Vahn returns to his now-defunct project Fairchild for a facelift of his Arkade release "Touch The Sun." It's always intriguing when an artist remixes themselves, especially so after several years and through the lens of a new project, so of course, this track is full of fascination.

On the surface, "Touch The Sun" remains largely, if not wholly, intact in its structure and quantitative values (runtime, key and BPM). But as much as this revisit is a sidestep, it is indeed an enjoyable affair. A brilliant track even if were released today, "Touch The Sun" is not broken and therefore does not need to be fixed. Rather the revisit appears to be more of a refining as opposed to a wholesale remix.

As if "Touch The Sun" were the first stepping stone in the evolution from Fairchild to Nox Vahn, it showcases the producer's dive into darker, more diversely orchestrated epics. And therein lies the difference between the five-year-old original and this new Nox Vahn version.

While you wouldn't be wrong in calling the original an epic and immersive soundscape, the new version has even more of that film score type feel in its plethora of percussion and myriad of movement. The biggest difference is the depth of sounds and designs, turning the foggy dreamscape of the original into a more animated and lifelike awakening.

Antic - Extranjero (ft. Della)

Yesterday, Anjunadeep stalwart Antic released a three-track EP entitled Delta Dunes. With a non-linear tracklist, the EP opens with a deep and dubious vocal track in "I Cannot Believe," which is followed by the bright and crisp breaks of its title track. Delta Dunes' final form reveals itself as a nostalgic-laden synth-pop affair in "Extranjero" featuring Spaniard Della. My favourite of the three, "Extranjero" bursts right out of the gate with warm, warbling synths which slowly make room for the soft vocal melody that when combined with the pleasing and powerful musical bed imagines an 80s movie montage. Even the lyrical content seems to mimic that of a scene straight from a sentimental romcom as the lines "I'll never let you go" and "I know you so well" could easy play out as the protagonist rushes to set things right by letting the love of their life know their true feelings. A heart-warmer for sure, "Extranjero" is a closing cut par excellence. Stream it now below and get it as part of Delta Dunes here.

Jon Gurd - Lion

The build towards Jon Gurd's August 14th Anjunadeep album drop continues as he's followed lead single "Together" with brilliant new joint, the album's title track, "Lion." A subtle, six minute affair that presents incredible poise and inspirational inner strength, "Lion" makes masterful use of a brilliant break and strong strident synths. As Gurd indicates in the track's description, positivity propels the track ever forward, shining a light on the uncharted darkness that lies ahead. This theme is crystalized in the lone vocals of "Lion" as Gurd begs to "see what's coming now / on the other side." And if that doesn't make this the perfect track for these (incoming cliché) 'dark days,' then I don't know what would. Enlightened Listening for November 29

This week's Enlightened Listening features several of my favourite artists and labels. Pete Tong leads things off with his incredible new Chilled Classics album. Qrion follows as things turn more electronic with an Anjunadeep EP sure to please the senses. Terr then returns to Phantasy Sound with two ingenious versions of "Energy Sync." Turning full techno, the power of Innellea is once again on full display with wicked The World Returns EP. Breaking to remixes, TSHA and Denham Audio take on Prospa's killer single "Control The Party" before The Avalanches and Mousse T. bring love and beauty to The Chemical Brothers and Starley respectively. Queen Qrion has once again delivered a cool dance-friendly house number in recent self-release "When You Want To Rave." Following delightful deep cuts alongside Spencer Brown for Anjunadeep and a spine-tingling remix of Dugong Jr (covered here), she's back to solo original efforts with this throwback track. Built upon a slowly charging acid bass-line amidst classic break/rave elements, "When You Want To Rave" does indeed satisfy the urge to dance, turning any listening environment into your own thumping underground sweat-house. The cool chords combat the high paced percussion and heart-palpitating bass power, ushering you into a euphoric club with the perfect mixture of moving bodies and air conditioning. Enlightened Listening for July 5

A quick turnaround from the last Enlightened Listening and a quick turn into the weekend leads to this brief look at a still fantastic and varied group of tracks. ASHE opens things up with a thoughtful EP that leans further into his acoustic techno. Next up a trance turn as Edu Imbernon delivers a dope Anjunadeep cut. Gorgon City stay hot with a tribute to Chicago house in "Elizabeth Street." After that is Annie Mac's hottest record, a genius growing groove from Theo Kottis. Building even bigger still, KiNK captures our attention with a brilliant recasting of Krystal Klear's exceptional "Euphoric Dreams." MK then delivers the first remix after the release of Mark Ronson's Late Night Feelings and as usual hits it out of the park. One of the most teased and highly sought after tracks of the year follows as David Penn sends us into ecstasy with his heart-melting remix. Gears change as the playlist begins to close with Flux Pavilion showing a new side that has me hearing classic Nero. Ukrainian producer Avoure got his week started right by taking us back to 2014 with his remix of London-based musical collective Jungle and their funky soul track "Lucky I Got What I Want." Like his jump-started arrival on the scene, a collab with Lane 8 entitled "Let Me," this remix also gets whipped up in a hurry. Delivering an upbeat, indie pop, deep house mixture, Avoure has imbued this track with a delightful dance energy. The drums drive the track forward while both the strings and synths dazzle. However, those awesome elements aside, I feel like the catchiness of the cool vocals and Avoure's intelligently crafted, almost crackling, atmosphere are what make "Lucky I Got What I Want" such a stunning success. It strikes me as a mix between Tiga's remix of Friendly Fires "Blue Cassette" (not just because of the accompanying artwork) and some of Alex Metric's more recent work with Anjunadeep (albeit with more frenzied movement). Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: CRi - Initial EP

Just short of one month ago we opened Bump In The Hump with the title track and lead single from CRi's Anjunadeep EP, Initial. This past Friday the rest of the EP followed with two more, far-stretching and mystifying, magical numbers, and once again we'll be opening the all Canadian electronic extravaganza with CRi's creative genius. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: David Hohme & Dustin Nantais - Onward Only

Tomorrow the legendary trio of Above & Beyond take to REBEL for what promises to be an epic night (RSVP/Tickets). Not only do I have a remix of their classic "Sun & Moon" lined up in tonight's episode, it's also sandwiched by tracks from their own Anjunadeep imprint, including the just released David Hohme & Dustin Nantais collaboration "Onward Only." After first capturing my attention with "Crash & Burn," I've kept a close eye on Nantais and can safely say that this is the perfect place for his expansive, wandering sound. Stream it as a part of Explorations 08 and catch it in the mix tonight.
Above & Beyond are not the only Anjuna talents in the 6ix this weekend however, as Luttrell brings his Into Clouds tour to The Velvet Underground Friday (RSVP/Tickets). Rounding out the weekend of activities; Wingtip, Destructo and Mind Against all hit the decks Friday night (click names to see each event). Alex Metric & Ten Ven - Otic

Apparently I missed the boat on this Alex Metric, Ten Ven collab "Otic," which has been building steam over the last month or so. But when I finally heard it last week in the midst of a slew of strong tracks on Pete Tong's show last Friday I was astounded. The sheer magnitude and sublime simplicity of "Otic" is unassailable. It is quite possibly one of the single greatest pieces of pure house music I've ever heard. And I think that's really the key, it feels and sounds pure; clearly conjuring up the notion of an instant classic. It has a soaring strength while remaining faithfully fixed to the floor; you are simultaneously spellbound to reach for the sky and guided by its groove, sending your hips and feet swaying and strutting. And fittingly to its title, "Otic" is of course pleasing to the ear. Each and every element not only satisfies, it soothes, stimulates and in the case of the low end, quite literally stirs.

Rarely do I get this excited for a track, or find it this easy to write about (more like gush about), but here we are; it's Alex Metric, so that shouldn't come as a surprise. I don't mean to leave Ten Ven out, and it seems it may be released on his label, When I Met You. And I say seems here, because while the image above has been circulated by both artists, the rest of the internet seems to say it will be released on Anjunadeep, as noted on the tracklist for Pete Tong and in the Soundcloud comments. Whatever the case, Alex said it is due out March 1st, so we can look forward to that next week.
