Enlightened Listening for August 27

I've had a terrible time keeping track of the days this week, missing my usual Bump In The Hump rollout entirely, but I've managed to pull myself together today for another shot of new music in Enlightened Listening. Leading the way into this week's playlist is pure bliss from Caribou. He's followed by a trend towards epics with grand designs from Helsloot and AVIRA, each of whom author awesome rides. Again epic, but undeniably in a league of its own, "Rainy April" finally gets its release nearly three years after its first play at ABGT300.

Turning towards the piano, TSHA's new single "I Know" completes her extremely cool & captivating OnlyL EP. Again all over the piano, as Paul Woolford always is, "Be A Rebel" gets an extended second take with New Order rejigging Woolford's remix. The second in a run of four remixes in a row, the playlist continues with Marshall Jefferson's masterful remix of the already exquisite "Music Saved My Life."

Headfirst into flames, the gyrofield remix of Hudson Lee's "Reanimate" sets off a run of energizing and oft-fierce DnB. While striking wildly different chords, the next two tracks, Flume's remix of "On A Mountain" and Heymac's "Katina," each tug at the heartstrings. Where "On A Mountain" scorches with sparking synths, "Katina" cools with pristine piano. Finally, the playlist closes with two uncapitalized Canadian talents, flowanastasia and thook. The former is fabulous on "River Flows," the second single from her forthcoming debut LP; the latter sends us off into DAWN, a tremendous seven-track immersion in all kinds of off-kilter, organic goodness, which once again reaffirms thook's status as a sonic artisan.

Enlightened Listening for July 3

Bandcamp is at it again, once again waiving their fees, and of course that means this edition of Enlightened Listening returns to the popular platform. This week I've opted to add embeds for ease of access, but will refrain from doing release by release breakdowns and rather highlight those that require/deserve a little more shine. It's a diverse list with a number of killer compilations so take your time and be sure to check out each release, and of course purchase those that resonate with you.

Highlights/breakdowns: Cassius' final record with Philippe Zdar finally gets a digital release and it couldn't be a better, more fitting or prescient production. Absolutely one of the tracks of the year. GRRL's Marathon is incredibly powerful and immersive, a testament to their tremendous taste and ever thriving energy. Jaymie Silk's output this year has been stunning and this new release is reflective both of that and the trying times we're in - a truly brilliant (however dark) project. The BOOST TAPE is basically a who's who in trap, bass and all adjacent genres, and for just $10 is an absolute steal (not to mention it's all going to The Movement For Black Lives). Finally, the four-pack of "Mountains" remixes is too stacked not to showcase: 2x Paul Woolford, The Patchouli Brothers and Joey Negro. WOW.

Enlightened Listening for June 12

After last week's Bandcamp edition of Enlightened Listening we're back to our usual home on Spotify. This week's nearly eight hour long playlist features a staggering 85 tracks including 45 from one massive charitable compilation CARE4LIFE which supports the NHS. Said compilation includes big names Daniel Avery, The Chemical Brothers, Luke Solomon, Damian Lazarus, Joe Goddard, Jamie Jones, Pete Tong and so many more. It closes with a a killer DnB cut from 3Strange and the playlist itself does too with a Special Request vs Paul Woolford remix of CLIPZ. Otherwise you'll find that this week's playlist is largely funk and disco driven with amazing offerings from Roosevelt, Cavego, Chromeo and a handful of others. Somehow Ejeca is back with another new EP, just as Tensnake, Tinlicker and Yotto each stay hot with a trio of sick singles. Rounding things out there's standout remixes from Jacques Greene, ABSOLUTE. and Lonely Boy and an epic vocal techno EP from Charlotte de Witte. Few artists are as prolific as Paul Woolford, and perhaps even fewer are as potent when it comes to the use of piano in dance music. Returning to his given name after a couple killer Special Request remixes, Woolford dropped two more remixes this past Friday. Both incredibly powerful and catchy, I've chosen to focus on the driving dynamism and brilliant bounce of "Bullet" instead of the euphoric, rising qualities of "Revival." The gut-punching piano/bongo intro lays the groundwork for this slick banger to grow out of, and boy does this remix really bloom. It doesn't need sunlight or oxygen - it is and has them both in itself. It is life. Being shot with this "Bullet" doesn't do any damage, but rather energizes and uplifts like Mario eating a mushroom. Enlightened Listening for October 25

Compiling this week's Enlightened Listening was an epic task. Seemingly every new release I dug through had at least one standout track, and that's if the whole thing wasn't worthy in itself. This led to perhaps the largest edition of this weekly playlist, showcasing 25 releases, 75 tracks and reaching over five and a half hours. As usual I've tried to make it flow as smoothly as possible running through some brilliant cohesive longer form releases, through disco and house to DnB, trap and bass before a rock finale. Yes there's rock in this week's edition as Pink Floyd recieve a remix, Mura Masa leans that way and Wolfmother makes a triumphant return. Listen below and find a quick hit of highlights next.

StayLoose opens with an exceptional album, filled with its fair share of beauty, bangers and transportive power. Qrion and Newman (I Love) follow with deep, lush, entrancing EPs. Pete Tong delivers another insight into his forthcoming album with HER-O. Joey Negro rebuilds a classic. warner case completes his debut EP. Then remixes take over with necessary nods to EDX, Alex Metric and Paul Woolford. London Elektricity unleashes his uber cool album as does Benzi who compiles a killer list of talents for Pressure Points Vol. 1. Kotek and TNGHT give a taste of their upcoming EPs. Solomun stamps his sound on Adriatique after a trio of remixes of Botnek joint "Jiffy." Finally, I don't think I'll ever grow tired of either David Gilmour or Andrew Stockdale as both Pink Floyd and Wolfmother soothe my soul.

Enlightened Listening for May 12

A couple days late, but these tracks absolutely had to be shared. This week's Enlightened Listening gets underway with The Shapeshifters and Chic vocalist Kimberly Davis and the brilliant, biting brass of Glitterbox joint "Life Is A Dancefloor." Up next Paul Woolford unleashes an exceptional piano-led take on Hot Chip's heater "Hungry Child." The unstoppable force of Kölsch then ups the intensity with his remix of "Stella." Leading us further towards techno with a touch of midtempo, mau5trap once again wows with their recent releases through Sian's Ultraviolet EP 1.0. Marking the midway point in the playlist, Dimitri Veimar dazzles with 3 new originals alongside Dean Grenier's remix of the EP's title track "Planet." Changing gears, Pham returns with a diverse and delectable mixtape in Nostalgia. And indeed it is nostalgia you get upon seeing the title of Madeaux's massive "Black Magic Woman," a production worthy of one Carlos Santana. Next up Ninajirachi gives "303" some much needed movement, progression and captivating sound design, taking it from blah to banger. Finally, Night Bass bring us seven bangers worthy of their high standard; standouts include: "Desert Moon," "Killers" and "Fresh Prince."
