Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: A-Trak & WEISS - Funk U

There seems to be an affinity between Alicia Myers' oft sampled "I Want To Thank You" and years ending in 1. Originally released in 1981, "I Want To Thank You" has been sampled at least 39 times (per WhoSampled) by acts ranging from Busta Rhymes & 50 Cent to Tiësto & Norman Doray. Perhaps its most popular use came a mere ten years after Alicia, as Clivillés & Cole (of C+C Music Factory) reworked it for Mariah Carey's "Make It Happen." Now twenty years later, A-Trak & WEISS have returned to that well for "Funk U." Released Friday on Fool's Gold, this latest iteration appears alongside other funky joints from Bit Funk, Pat Lok and others in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump. Stream the eminently familiar "Funk U" below, get it from your preferred outlet here, and catch on Radio Humber live from 7-9 PM EST or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud, here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Smalltown DJs - Good Thang (ft. Bootsy Collins)

Never ones to miss, Smalltown DJs remain one of Canada's best and most consistent purveyors of house music. They've been a staple of my sets dating back to my time on CFBU as I was just reminded of their "Good People" collab with Grandtheft. But instead of finding the funk in the banjo there, their new track "Good Thang" gets its injection of funk from the legend that is Bootsy Collins. Another party track par excellence, this new Fool's Gold release overflows with excitement and energy, pumping in a whole bunch of bass (guitar and otherwise). And if the groove of "Good Thang" isn't enough for you, the vociferous vocals are sure to leave you weak in the knees. Get "Good Thang" here and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.FOLLOW SMALLTOWN DJS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Fremda - Stream

As far as labels go not many can match the eclectic quality of Fool's Gold. Want fresh rap? They got it. Game changing electronic? That too. Not only can they boast incredible releases, but somehow they are able to source them from rising talents (see Danny Brown and Madeaux for example). Here they've jumped on new mysterious European duo Fremda for just their second ever EP. Our first taste of forthcoming Login EP comes in funky retro single "Stream." Immediately alluring, the giant grooves have a gravity of their own, pulling you into the super cool soundscape that plays out like a nighttime ride on a Tron Light Cycle. Don't let its robotic and technological aesthetic trick you however, "Stream" does indeed have a human heart whose pulse you can hear throughout, ultimately endearing itself through its delightful design and fulsome feel. Enjoy "Stream" below and get it for yourself here.FOLLOW FREMDA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

The Magician - Magic Tape 89

While it's not exactly the start of a new week, The Magician has blessed us with an hour of new tunes in the 89th edition of his Magic Tape series, perfect for pushing through the doldrums that is another ride around the calendar rows. Heavy on the unreleased content, even more so than usual, this mix features, at least what we believe to be, the likes of forthcoming A-Trak and The Aston Shuffle as well as recently released Mike Mago, Disclosure and The Black Madonna. While the heart of this tape is house, The Magician makes sure to offer up twists of acid, disco, funk, RnB, piano and more. It's not heavy on mixing but rather more focused on letting the beauty of each piece breathe, and boy does it feel good to let this uplifting oxygen into our lungs. While I've nearly made it through the whole tape for a second time, and a full listen is a must, I think I've pinpointed my favourite section, that being the trio of IDs between Disclosure's "Talk" VIP and A-Trak's "Work It Out," which drops Thursday on Fool's Gold. Stream the whole mix below and find at least a partial tracklist via 1001tracklists here.FOLLOW THE MAGICIAN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for March 8

We've got an extra funky Friday full of releases for this week's edition of Enlightened Listening. There's a couple cool albums of the groovier house variety, opposed by the despair driven darkness of Gesaffelstein's first album in over five years. There's also excellent EPs from Jon Gurd and Joe Goddard, as well as some sick singles from Don Rimini and Juelz, plus a couple sublime remixes from Folamour and Joris Voorn. Stream via Spotify playlist below and find descriptions at the bottom. Enjoy!

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Energy Fantasy (Folamour Remix)
Fantastic opening track. The drum work dazzles beneath bright and beautiful, soaring synths.

Birdee - Then Came The Sun
There are no holes in this album. Full on funky fun with awesome vocal driven and instrumental tracks alike. Big bold beats like "Love" and "Rumours" and more spacious, slow-burning sensations like "Meant To Be" and "Don't Give Up Your Love."

Locked Groove - Sunset Service
A lot like Birdee above, the funk is strong with this one; however, the energy is kicked up a notch, as immediately noted in "Pudding." Verging on classic rave vibes, there's no shortage of dance energy at the core of these tracks. They can be dark and dirty like "Zillion" or bright and ethereal like "Out Of Orbit."

Yotto - Walls (Joris Voorn Remix)
The typical top notch brilliance of Voorn is on full display here. As always, the extended offering allows the ease of "Walls" to breathe its beauty into your soul.

Jon Gurd - After It All
Like Folamour above, the drum work throughout this EP lays a fantastic foundation for the swirling synths to dance around. While it opens skyward in its projection, After It All gets deeper as it progresses.

Joe Goddard - Pull The Plug
My most anticipated release of the year so far. Each track is exceptionally designed, delivering some seriously sick grooves. "Sacred Heart" is both hypnotic and brilliantly bumping. "Max De Fool" builds on this hypnotism, turning further towards techno before Kool Keith cuts the chord with a wild get-down and fulsome flow on the title track. Finally, the fire inducing, furious drum opening of "Broken" will have you on your ass when the beat finally drops. Unreal.

Don Rimini - Homeboy
Bleepy shuffling brilliance. Not an all time stunner, but a surefire party starter.

Gesaffelstein - Hyperion
Expectations are dangerous. Expecting an artist to craft the same kind of tracks they did nearly a decade ago is foolhardy. No, this is not Variations, Conspiracy or even Aleph, but yes, it is still Gesaffelstein. His genius is still there; just like any of us, he's changed/evolved/grown over the years. Admittedly, I was not big on any of the singles, especially after the first few listens, however they've grown on me and now I'm quite the fan of both of the features. Of course I'm here for HAIM, and The Hacker/Electric Youth collab is incredibly intriguing, but the three track finale is perhaps the best bit of this whole endeavor. It's a bit soundtrack-ish, but hey, he's always had those proclivities and if you're not a fan of quality soundtrack stuff like John Williams, Wendy Carlos, Alan Menken and others, you're kind of missing the point...

Juelz - Closure (ft. Ruby Chase)
Finally, Juelz gives us our first taste of his Shanghai Nights EP, due out May 3rd on Fool's Gold. His club capabilities are on full display as he blends trap and future bass better than I've hear in a while.

Sammy Bananas - Cherry Soda (ft. Kaleena Zanders)

Freshly brewed by Fool's Gold comes a bright and bubbly single from Sammy Bananas' forthcoming debut album Someday. "Cherry Soda" features the always uplifting authority of Kaleena Zanders and blurs the line between disco, house and pop. The synth shows off a tart touch, contrasted by the sweet piano pulses and Kaleena's killer crooning. But for me, the best bit of "Cherry Soda" comes from the backing of the bass and drums that propel the groove, sending your arms upward, fizzing like its namesake. It is an undeniable anthem, and welcome refreshment for the warm weather. Enjoy!FOLLOW SAMMY BANANAS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

The Magician - Magic Tape 78 (Recorded live in Miami)

Of course Miami Music Week was top of mind the last little while and while many compilations have come and gone, The Magician's 78th edition of his Magic Tape mix series is an undeniable standout. Recorded live in the middle of Fool's Gold's takeover of 1-800-Lucky (between sets from A-Trak and MK), the hour long selection is all sorts of spellbinding sorcery. It features a handful of brilliant brand new jams including Duke Dumont's "Inhale," Peggy Gou's "It Make You Forget," and the Alex Metric/Ten Ven collab "Otic." Yes these are all familiar and fantastic tracks, and of course it features The Magician's masterful mixing mysticism, but the best bits are forthcoming releases from A-Trak & YehMe2's "Prayer Hands" (out Thursday) and Supermini's remix of Crush Club "We Dance." Get tracklist via 1001tracklists, stream below and begin your week with this bewitching wonderment.FOLLOW THE MAGICIAN: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
