Oddish - Oddity

Some times good things come to those that wait. Often times I find myself struggling to find something fresh and exciting or even just good enough to pique my attention as I scroll through Soundcloud. That holds true today, because although there were a few that warranted a second play, I didn't feel as connected as I'd like in order to properly address them. But that changed when I went to the Discover feature and the 'Upload' playlist. Atop the 20 "newly posted tracks" was Oddish, a name I know from Pokémon, but this isn't that. This is a unique character that has very little information surrounding, presumably, him. The only outside connection is a Twitter account, that seems to have arisen around the same time as the "Om Telolet Om" craze (read here). But back to the music.

The track atop the aforementioned 'Upload' playlist was "Jet Lean" and its brassy drone, which gets tripped and burnt brilliantly. The drums snap and smack teasing the wonderfully warped low end that only get more twisted in the second drop. After taking in all of the Oddity release from which "Jet Lean" is taken, it is the perfect introduction to the dark, destructive and banging bass, house, techno amalgam. Each track sports a strong groove and succeeds in large part thanks to propellant percussion. They are all equally full and fantastically designed productions that are sure to fill the floor and leave you wanting more. Bump In The Hump: May 30 (Season 7, Episode 34)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Frustra - Acid Vision (ft. RIFFA)

Friend of the show Frustra continues to craft heavy hitting house numbers. As we've heard before his productions often hearken back to an earlier time in electronic, whether it be french touch, bloghaus or in this case, acid. The aptly titled "Acid Vision," which dropped free Friday, combines much of what makes Frustra's sound so strong and full. Featuring Brooklyn's RIFFA, it has an incredible oomph in the drums, awesome atmosphere, perfectly punctuating samples and and acid drop that will leave you bending over backwards on the dance-floor. Stream the sensation below and download here.Once again Bump In The Hump is inundated with house, opening with more than an hour of deep, garage, disco, tech, bass and more. There's also a strong sampling of trap, DnB, and even a touch of trance. And as always we look ahead to the weekend with shows that include No Neon's return to CODA with Dr. Fresch Friday (RSVP/Tickets), the Jungle Funk fam at Nest Saturday (RSVP/Tickets), and the U4RIA Trance Festival Friday and Saturday (RSVP/Tickets). All this and more live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber and available after the fact via Mixcloud.

May 28 Disco Delights

Scrolling through my Soundcloud I found the usual onslaught of pop/rap remixes/bootlegs and clips of dubstep tracks, but I'm finding disco edits sprinkled in more and more. So much so that I've decided to share some of today's finds paired with a couple I never got a chance to showcase previously. Check out the playlist below, grab the free downloads where available and get your week off to a strong start.

Flight Facilities ft. Broods, Reggie Watts & Saro - Stranded (Late Night Tuff Guy Remix)*
Supremely smooth delivery from the legendary down under disco deity. Truly an awe-inspiring production from every angle. Each element plays its role perfectly, seeming organic and effortless.

Lindstrom ft. Ronika - Didn't Know Better (Remix)
Beautiful, bright and bouncy number that thrives through its drums and synth work pushing the original to new heights. When Ronika and the original return the anthemic quality kicks in, reminding us that Lindstrom is a leader in all things disco house.

T-Connection - At Midnight (Soul Bombs Rework)*
It's hard to make it through a disco set without coming across either SanFranDisko's edit or any other Soul Bombs production, but this version differentiates itself with a more high tempo, jacking groove. It is a filter fun fest that exploits the awesome bassline, punchy percussion and sweet strings.

Sister Sledge - We Are Family (Barry Harris 2018 House Remix)*
Yet another classic track retouched by Barry Harris. While it's called house, the heart remains defiantly disco. Great groove led by a funky fat bassline, warm chords, and pleasurable piano.

Peter Gabriel - Steam (Petko Turner Funky Edit)*
The prolific Petko continues to impress with each subsequent edit. Although the original is already funky, this version is even more so. It adds extra oomph focusing on drums while sneaking the horns in underneath the wall of thundering percussion. Turner's treatment of the vocals deserves an extra nod.

Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover (Mean Fiddler 12 Inched Regroove)*
Maybe it's just me but little can compare to disco edits of 80s classics. Like LNTG's edit above this too is satiny smooth. The cool and captivating core of the original remains relatively intact while extended for extra enjoyment and dance-floor filling fun.

Enlightened Listening for May 25

It may only be May 25th, but it sure seems summer is in full swing. It's warm, people are busy and music keeps coming fast and furious, at least in its delivery. Sonically however, the music is getting funkier, groovier and more laid-back allowing us to enjoy it more leisurely. That said there are still a handful of more banging, club style tunes, but the majority (even Diplo) falls under the ever growing 'nu-disco' moniker. Enjoy 20 tracks (singles, remixes, EPs and Hoodboi's brilliant Breathing Room), as part of an hour and a half of music in this week's edition of Enlightened Listening. Stream/read below.

David Guetta & Sia - Flames (Aazar Remix)
Holy Flashdance vibes Batman! Sia's voice soars as always and Aazar's groove glows like a polished bar of gold. The final minute makes my heart flutter, if only it ran five times as long. I'm in love.

Louis La Roche & Mylo - Lovers
Definitely nu-disco, but bigger and bolder than most of the others in this list. However that doesn't mean this is without a caring caress. The bright backing that bolsters the bass and the little touches like the loon imbue this paramour with all the power of nature.

Pilo - Relax/Requiem
Twin Turbo continues to conjure up incredible club cuts. "Relax" takes little time to leave you lost in the haze, lurching around like a disembodied spirit. "Requiem" shows off some supremely smart drum work, building the whole track around an onslaught of earth shattering drums, as though emanating directly from the earth's core. Call it a coincidence, but we first heard it around the same time Kilauea started erupting.

Silk City (Diplo & Mark Ronson) - Only Can Get Better (ft. Daniel Merriweather)
Premiered by Annie Mac yesterday, I can think of no more evidence that disco is back than Diplo jumping on the bandwagon. While it's not likely the best you'll hear even in this list, it's a strong pop production, and will likely get a lot of play throughout the summer. It only gets better when you find out that both Alex Metric and Riton helped with additional production. Nice.

Botnek & Aylen - Future Of The Underground
The last time we heard these two (who are perfect for each other) was when Botnek retouched "Quack Attack," one of the wildest tracks you'll ever hear. This one definitely feels underground, especially in that's where all of its sounds seem to stem from; rising from the floor, as you writhe on it.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Sylvia Says (A-Trak Remix)
I like to imagine this being played at the royal wedding reception. There is just such a strong air of European excellence that plays perfectly with the unfettered fun the groove and bounce brings.

Chromeo ft. DRAM & Jesse Johnson - Must've Been (Mercer Remix)
Chromeo's hottest single so far receives yet another remix, with Mercer working his magic this time. Whereas the original was a jam, this is a jam session, adding more elements and a little more oomph for good measure. A genius recasting that is sure to draw people to the dance-floor in droves.

Element - You (ft. Khamari)*
One of my favourite rising stars yet again shows his range. After the unreal banger "Needles," he's gone for a more chill wavy approach, and this one works wonders especially with Khamari's smooth vocals.

Booka Shade - Easy Drifter (Claude VonStroke Remix)
Doesn't get much bigger than this, both in names and sound. Like the single "Night Surfing" this one grows in ebbs and flows, with wonderful finishing flourishes from Claude. Easy yet supremely strong.

Kramder - Funkastic
I absolutely love that CONFESSION is getting more into the French touch and this EP nails it. It's nicely filtered fun, that while oozing with old-school vibes still brings a contemporary kick. The effects and aforementioned filtering remind me of early Louis La Roche and that might be why I feel so strongly about it. If you want to kick your party up a notch throw on some "Pure Gasoline."

Friendly Fires - Love Like Waves (Riton Remix)
Seems as though Riton and Alex Metric have been running in the same circles lately, as the latter has already released his remix and of course they both backed "Only Can Get Better." Friendly Fires almost always offer up excellent tracks for remixing, and this certainly follows suit. The synths will have you head spinning in one direction, while the drums another. You'll be all twisted up on the dance-floor while onlookers stare in awe.

Hoodboi - Breathing Room
In the past five or so years, Hoodboi has released several of my favourite records. That said we haven't heard from him for a while, but that appears to have paid off as this beautiful seven track sensation is pure poise and polish. Right from the opening number Breathing Room is nothing short of stunning, showcasing incredible amounts of instrumentation that is sewn together with mind-blowing mastery. There's sublime songs like "Tip Of My Tongue" and "Drowning," fresh funk in "Long Distance," genius get down in "Tunnel Vision" and one of the most exquisite pieces of electronic music, "True Colors."

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Chromeo - Juice (Purple Disco Machine Remix)

German groove genius Purple Disco Machine is in Toronto tonight, playing Goldie alongside Nick Fiorucci (RSVP/Tickets). What better time to break out his killer Chromeo cocktail, "Juice." It opens tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump as we once again make our way through the latest and greatest in dance and electronic from across the country. Don your dancing shoes and mix it up.There's more than an hour of house (disco, deep, tech, bass and otherwise), and that's pretty much the norm, but what isn't is the six artists making their Bump In The Hump debuts. There's some really cool stuff from each half of Talal & Zoi, who play Parlour together Saturday with Death On The Balcony (RSVP/Tickets). A couple of classics from Diana Ross and Tears For Fears get retouched by two of our more trusted names in Barry Harris and Jerome Robins, and the new classic from from Loud Luxury gets yet another remix. Plus we get a first play of a forthcoming track from bass house badman Blansh. And yet of course we wind up the two hour extravaganza with a four part grimy dubstep section. The Trammps - Disco Inferno (Barry & Gibbs Club Edit)

I almost fell out of my bed as I opened my phone and found that disco providing duo Barry & Gibbs had just released an edit of The Trammps' 1976 classic "Disco Inferno." Last year their edit of Michael Jackson's "Working Day & Night" broke into the 19th spot in my top 100 tracks of the year countdown (see here), however until March's original "Dancing To A Love Song," we hadn't heard anything new from them. This return welcomes another extended and warm groove dance session that is sure to showcase the smoothest of boogie bumps and disco jumps. The mixing is masterful, easy to enjoy, and only amplifies the already red hot sweeps of the original. If like me you're always in the market for new disco edits, look no further than this impassioned injection and download "Disco Inferno" free here.FOLLOW BARRY & GIBBS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Throwback Thursday: My 5 Favourite Essential Mixes

With the long weekend looming, I'll be away from my computer as I attend a bachelor party in Montreal. With that in mind I've decided to share my five favourite episodes of BBC Radio One's Essential Mix that we'll certainly be turning to as the party rages on through Monday. It of course serves as a Throwback Thursday post as each of these mixes original aired between 2009 and 2011, an era I'll forever find close to my heart. Find each five linked alphabetical order with short descriptions. Enjoy!

Alex Metric - April 16, 2011
This has been my exemplar for mixing and track selection, and is best described by the man himself as his past, present and future. Records that he grew up listening to and takes in "80s synth, funk, italo-disco, nu-disco, techno, house, electro, indie, [...] filters the attitude and feeling of big beat through it, [...] that anything goes ethos, [...] no genres, just good music." Picking one highlight is nearly impossible, as there are so many, but the combination of LCD Soundsystem's "You Wanted A Hit" and Yuksek's dub of Katy Perry's "Peacock" is still stunning. (Tracklist)

Boy 8-Bit - May 14, 2010
An obvious inclusion as this is my favourite artist, but what can be said about this epic mix? The crate digging and mixing reign supreme, showcasing so many of my favourite productions, soon to be legends, and just downright dirty deep cuts (see the unknown mix of Detroit Grand Pubahs). Again a single highlight is tough to pick, but the move from the groove of Thomas Shumacher's "Red Purple" to Joe And Will Ask?'s "Rusty Pig" gets me every time. (Tracklist)

Cosmic Gate - February 12, 2011
The only non-house mix in this list, and an oddity in that I had really never heard Cosmic Gate before this. That said I still turn to this mix incredibly often, there's just such a grandness to it that fills me with an immense energy. I use it for long bike rides or other extended travels, where I may need to focus for short stretches, but can still enjoy the overall epicness. The track selection is again top notch, with so many now classics. Dune's "Heiress Of Valentia" still sends me into a tizzy, but the move from "Zero76" to Tristan Garner remix of "Rapture" is rave resplendence. (Tracklist)

Fake Blood - March 14, 2009
Quite possibly the first Essential Mix I ever heard, and it was because of Fake Blood that I became introduced to Boy 8-Bit. Fake Blood was bloghaus at its best, but he was so much more. His skills on the deck, undeniable. His ear for fire mashups and acapellas, perfect. His own productions, awesome. At times it is pure explosive energy and others, sublime and sweet. The sledgehammer to the face that is the trio of Zinc's "Blunt Edge," Lazy Jay's "Float My Boat" and Ink & Needle's "Tattoo Number Three" is stupid good. (Tracklist)

Jack Beats - February 20, 2010
Another excellent example of handfuls of my favourite productions (from Jack Beats and otherwise) being brought together in incredible fashion. One hell of a start with their ridiculously wicked "Little Secrets" remix. But then there's what I've called the best 40 minutes of music starting from their remix of "Epic Last Song" through to Popof's "Serenity." Then there's the transition from "Peanuts Club" to "Donut" that still sends shivers down my spine. The release there with the drums and the depth of "Donut" underneath is almost more than I can bear. True and undeniable brilliance. (Tracklist)

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Awoltalk & So Sus - Obscura

Crystals founder and Vancouver producer So Sus stays hot, following up the release of his sample pack (offered in celebration of 5K soundcloud followers), by dropping off his Awoltalk collab, "Obscura." You don't even need to listen to the track to realize how fire it is; a look at the comments, and those posting them, reveals the raucous power. It is a banger bar none, that lives on the edge of electro, trap and just plain bass. The most obvious element of the duos' killer craftsmanship comes in the drops, but it's the drums and the dynamics that make "Obscura" such a stunner. Grab it free here, and stream below.Tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump operates like a house sandwich starting with disco and deep, before diving into funk, future bass, trap, wave, and techno which bleeds into tech- and then bass-house. We welcome festival season which is set to start this weekend with the first edition of Electric Island. We also take a peek inside the clubs, and welcome eight new artists to the Radio Humber airwaves. All this and more live from 7-9 PM EDT here, and after the fact via Mixcloud.

S3A B2B Folamour At Radio Meuh Circus Festival (03.30.18)

Unless this is your first time on this blog you'll be aware of my now seemingly undying passion for disco. I've always been a house head more than any other electronic genre, but disco has taken up such a massive section of my listening habits. And even though I endlessly stuff my face with disco, I still hunger for it incredibly. A couple weeks back when wrote about A-Trak's mix for The Do-Over (here), I came across Folamour and "The Power And The Blessing Of Unity." I then scrolled through his soundcloud only to find his edit of France Gall "Ella Elle L'a," a track I'd just recently heard remixed a month prior. It took no time at all for me to fall for the funky percussion, I then found myself on the floor once the horns came in during the chorus. This has since become my go to song wherever or whenever I need a pick me up. Completing the circle I found out that Folamour was inspired to make that edit after hearing S3A (Sampling As An Art) also take on France Gall with "J'ai Besoin d'Amour." So now you can understand why this live B2B set caught my attention.

Recorded at the Radio Meuh Circus Festival at the end of March, the hour long mix features S3A's aforementioned edit, his recently released "Something More," Mike Simonetti's "Midnight Or Late Afternoon" (an edit of "I'm Your Boogie Man"), Groove Motion's "Try It" and Mother's "All Funked Up." There are endless amounts of horns and keys arranged into godly grooves, that will no doubt get you going. And what could be better? Stream, follow S3A and Folamour below, and dance, dance dance!FOLLOW S3A: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sammy Bananas - Cherry Soda (ft. Kaleena Zanders)

Freshly brewed by Fool's Gold comes a bright and bubbly single from Sammy Bananas' forthcoming debut album Someday. "Cherry Soda" features the always uplifting authority of Kaleena Zanders and blurs the line between disco, house and pop. The synth shows off a tart touch, contrasted by the sweet piano pulses and Kaleena's killer crooning. But for me, the best bit of "Cherry Soda" comes from the backing of the bass and drums that propel the groove, sending your arms upward, fizzing like its namesake. It is an undeniable anthem, and welcome refreshment for the warm weather. Enjoy!FOLLOW SAMMY BANANAS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Joker - Marching Orders (ft. Footsie)

One month ago today Joker released the absolutely epic "Anamorphic," and he continues to lay his claim on 2018 with another brutish belter with the forthcoming killer "Marching Orders." Set for release May 18, and spun by Sir Spyro on 1xtra last week, this noxious bass number brings in Footsie to spit fire atop the ostentatious offering. At its core "Marching Orders" is a simple track that thrives through a snappy percussion groove and wicked wobbles. But like its namesake it is incredibly commanding, where each note, wub, and word has the crowd captivated. It's not hard to envision it doing damage in a dark club as the dancefloor dips and dives in perfect unison. Stream below and pre-order here.FOLLOW JOKER: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Camelphat - Essential Mix (05.12.18)

House heroes of the moment Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala, together known as Camelphat, just delivered a, dare I say, instant classic installment of BBC Radio One's Essential Mix. Although neither of their biggest successes "Cola" (which grabbed a Grammy nod) and remix of "Right Here, Right Now" (which sat atop the Beatport chart for weeks) appear in this two hour extravaganza, the quality of the mix is undeniable. They bring in trusted technicians Adriatique, Super Flu, Richy Ahmed, Pional and others to build a beautiful, brilliant and all around bumping episode. It's house through and through, but the elements of techno tilt the narrative nicely, giving it a bit more edge. It rolls through the two hours effortlessly, but that's not to say it's without highlights.

Sonically it seems the mix fully finds its footing with Sabb's shining single "Jeopardized" and again when the piano comes in during Black Coffee's remix of "Muye." Later the contrast of Camelphat's own "Dopamine Machine" and Anja Schneider's "All I See" showcases the sublime and wide-spanning nature of house. As the mix nears the three quarters mark in comes Bebetta's massive "Megalon" which continues to amaze, and appear everywhere, rightfully so. The fitting finale, at least in my eyes, comes with the mix from "Sand In Your Shoes" to another one of Camelphat's power productions, "Panic Room," while the following two tracks make for a marvelous denouement. Sparkee x PINEO & LOEB - Feel It

It's not often something perfect falls in your lap, but that's what happened today as I became introduced to a trio of Canadian talents, dabbling with perhaps my favourite vibe at the moment. "Feel It" comes from Westwood Recordings and brings together Halifax's Sparkee, PINEO & LOEB for some nu-disco.

You may have already heard of Sparkee who recently gained some notoriety around his "technically impossible" bassline, found and described as such by Deadmau5 in his remix of "Strobe." Or maybe you've seen PINEO & LOEB around as they've shared stages with the likes of Autoerotique, Botnek and Zeds Dead among others. Yet even if this is your first time hearing of these three, it's abundantly clear the funk lies deep in their bones. They bring an incredible amount of life and heaps of heart to this beastly bump all night kind of tune. And best of all its entirely unhinged and unabashed in its fearlessly fun delivery, explicitly so with the voice over saying "Sparkee with the big balls." Stream below, download here and catch it in an all new episode of Bump In The Hump, Wednesday from 7-9 PM.FOLLOW SPARKEE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sinjin Hawke - First Opus Remixes

One year ago today Sinjin Hawke dropped what would end up as my album of the year (see here). In celebration of First Opus' anniversary, he's offered up seven superb remixes, with one hell of a lineup, including the likes of MikeQ, Murlo and Fractal Fantasy favourites Canblaster and Zora Jones.Exactly what made the album itself so good, is what makes this effort so immaculate. Each track delivers a unique alchemy, that fits into Sinjin's club oeuvre exquisitely. The opening remix, a genius jersey club flip from Gutta gouges into the shimmering scent of "In Loving Memory" sending the floor into uncontrollable pulverizing gyrations. It is at once gleaming yet grimy.

Continuing the grime feel, Swing Ting brings Trigga into the equation who doubles the damage of the bass and strings. "They Can't Love You" keeps command of the floor, impregnating it with an incredible groove. The life brewed there arises in the whipped up artificial intelligence of "By Any Means" whose synths dance divine. MikeQ then plays god with "Don't Lose Yourself To This" controlling the skies, bringing thunder and lightning bursting to life in the club.

That club storm brings turns to Murlo to who transports us to the jungle with the "Prophecy Of Bootyspoon." The elemental energy of this mix is obvious, but whether it's from this earth is not. Zora Jones ups everything in her return, with an incredibly unbound take on "Snow Blind." It's power leaves you losing your bearings as though you've all broken all connection to your senses.

As the capstone atop of this monument, the EP ends with cinematic cunning. Canblaster brings even more movement to "Monolith," warping it to his wild want. It's got genius groove sections and pungent percussion that, like First Opus, will leave your jaw on the floor as you scramble to hit the play button again. Stream/purchase the EP here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Stephen Walking - Glide

The one and only Stephen Walking is back with a brand new production, his first solo original release in over a year. "Glide" sees a return to his enigmatic, spacefunk/dadrock sound best noted in the 364 day run from "Dads In Space" through to "It Came From Planet Earth." That said "Glide" blasts into the abyss in a slightly different fashion, this time his trademark metric ton of toms and other drums are led by the sexiest of saxophones. The life, movement and seemingly infinite amount of instrumentation he sews together is more than enough to leave your head spinning yet soars supremely smoothly. It's been too long since I've been able to sing the praises of Stephen Walking, so you can only imagine my excitement in being able to bring this new beauty to Bump In The Hump tonight. Stream below. After last week's deep dive into DnB, we turn our head to the strength of the Canadian wave scene, with the likes of Memphis and MRKRYL, among others. There's the usual hearty helping of house, including a couple weapons from our favourite labels BADLQQK and Turbo. We also look ahead to the weekend with several events showcased, alongside a forthcoming Hanz Ford production. Finally we feature tracks from brand new albums by Felix Cartal and Venetian Snares & Daniel Lanois. Catch Bump In The Hump live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber, or after the fact with Mixcloud.

Chromeo - Head Over Heels Release Date & New Single

After slowly teasing us with 3 singles since November, Chromeo have finally announced the release date of their 5th studio album, Head Over Heels. Due out June 15th on Last Gang Records, the album title is part pun as the duo are now using their own heads over their own heels, becoming one with their trademark legs (with more about the cover via Office Magazine here).

The now revealed 12 track list includes features from French Montana, Stefflon Don, and Amber Mark, along with the already revealed DRAM and The-Dream. Looking further at list I'm surprised at how tightly packaged it is, each track running between 3:05 and 3:30. I have a feeling this may merely be a placeholder as 9 of the 12 are listed at 3:16; a look at their previous albums shows a much wider range.

The duo are set to play The Tonight Show alongside DRAM and Jesse Johnson tonight, but they've already had a busy day with their fourth single "Bad Decision" premiering as Zane Lowe's World Record. Dave1 & P-Thugg continue their "love letter to all the different kinds of funk music that inspired [them]" with this latest entry oozing unabashed amour, sleek strength and grooves, with a big bop, booty shaking soul. And as usual you cannot cut the fun and frivolity out of a Chromeo track, they go hand in hand. They are just pure pep, unmitigated mirth and merriment. Make your heart happy, don't worry about your wallet, pre-order Head Over Heels now and stream "Bad Decision" below.

Salsoul Orchestra - Getaway (Dr. Funkenstein Instrumental Dub)

Fridays are always crazy busy, and today was no exception; I had a ton of things to attend to and found myself unable to properly dive into my usual discovery avenues until nearly 5 PM. That said this track jumped out at me immediately, as I'd just been relistening to Horse Meat Disco's Essential Mix recently, in which they included "Salsoul Rainbow." Along with 1976's "Nice 'n' Naasty," "Getaway" topped out at #3 on the US Dance Charts as their highest successes, and it's no wonder why with such a funky swing, through strings, horns and drums. Dr. Funkenstein of DJ Pied Piper and Funkingham fame, has since remixed it ushering in an extended disco delight. Nearly twice as long as any other version and just as grand and groovy as ever, this is sure to satisfy even the staunchest of Salsoul purists. Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday: Jessie Ware - Night Light (Joe Goddard Remix)

It's been a while since I've done a proper Throwback Thursday post, but with Jessie Ware bringing her Glasshouse tour to Toronto tonight it feels right to shine a light on not just my favourite remix of the wonderful Mrs. Ware, but one of my favourite remixes of all time: Joe Goddard's take on "Night Light."

NOTE: The stream is not available in Canada on Soundcloud nor Spotify, so Youtube it is. There are several versions there, but in this one VJ Gary remixed the original music video, so enjoy those visuals.
Where to start with this masterpiece? The springy lead synth? Mmm. The luscious layered vocals? Ahh. The funky drum groove? Ah yes. This lays the foundation for the pure and potent pleasure that this tune delivers in droves. It swings and slides, slithering its way down your spine, infecting your unconscious with its warm groove.

As in the music video, Jessie acts as the all powerful puppet master with her beaming vocals emerging as a sublime spotlight above the brooding nocturnal bassline. And this mixture is more than magnificent, it is manifest magic as they swirl together in a fantastical fog. All of this movement and commingling is one thing, and as always Joe Goddard delivers it with incredible grace, but it's nothing without strong sound design, and surprise surprise, that too is showcased front and center.

The depth and delivery of the low end seems ceaseless, yet there is no muddy or murkiness to it, each piece plays its role perfectly. And as with the aforementioned drums, the low end lays the foundation for the titillating top end, which is no better enjoyed than in the final minute and a half as all the elements are realigned in resplendent fashion. And this is truly the cherry on top on this rave-worthy recast of Jessie Ware's sensational sophisti-pop sound.
