Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Frustra - Acid Vision (ft. RIFFA)

Friend of the show Frustra continues to craft heavy hitting house numbers. As we've heard before his productions often hearken back to an earlier time in electronic, whether it be french touch, bloghaus or in this case, acid. The aptly titled "Acid Vision," which dropped free Friday, combines much of what makes Frustra's sound so strong and full. Featuring Brooklyn's RIFFA, it has an incredible oomph in the drums, awesome atmosphere, perfectly punctuating samples and and acid drop that will leave you bending over backwards on the dance-floor. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: knodis - Broken Circuit

Last week's episode of Bump In The Hump looked ahead to Hunter Siegel's CODA debut with the 3rd anniversary of No Neon. One of the tracks he dropped in his epic open to close set was our very own knodis and "Broken Circuit." Somehow I managed to forget to play it back in the summer, but that's remedied tonight as I unleash its alien/android appeal. A Taste Of No Neon's 3rd Anniversary

It's hard to believe that 1) this time last year we were gearing up for the The Hoxton finale and 2) that No Neon has been one of the coolest parties for 3 years now. Further, playing the comfy confines of CODA, and their superb sound system, made No Neon's 3rd anniversary even more unbelievable.

Billed as a Hunter Siegel open to close set, he was actually joined behind the decks with Autoerotique, who Hunter said has been part of the most No Neon B2B sessions. No word whether this was because Hunter's "entire music collection [got] corrupted" the night before. While both brought out some new weapons, including a banging remix of Ekali and ZHU's "Blame," the night focused in large part on throwbacks, paying homage to the history of this epic party series.

I've compiled a short list of tracks played last night, starting with perhaps the No Neon anthem, "OTF" which was premiered at one of the previous shows. It also runs through a spell of dubstep, culminating in the sublime switch from the original into Sub Focus' remix of Rusko "Hold On." Hunter also managed to work in multiple MK tunes, including "Look Right Through" and "My Head Is A Jungle." He truly touched on every genre in the epic set, with only the smallest of samplings below. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Wraz - Spin

There's just something about Canadians and dark bass tracks. Whether it's a result of the weather, lack of sunlight or something entirely different, there's no shortage of sinister sounds being produced by Canucks. Of course there's the queen of darkness herself, Rezz, and No Neon don, Hunter Siegel, but equally ominous and infernal is Sherbrooke's Wraz. We've heard him twice here on Bump In The Hump, but this week he's back with his most inventive and ingenious production to date. "Spin" was created entirely through his recordings of a fidget spinner. All the elements: kicks, bass, snare; everything is the sound of a fidget spinner, not one single synth. This is an incredible achievement, very much so in line with the ethos of electronic music; it's about experimentation and the manipulation of atypical sounds and instruments into a more typical track. Wraz's passion for producing is clear, not just in "Spin," but the relentless rate at which new tracks are released. But fear not, there's a sizable serving of sublime and soulful disco and funky feels. Big names include Pat Lok, Tennyson, Daphni, Ramzoid, Snails, CRaymak and Botnek. Plus we look forward to a couple incredible shows with a remix of Sinjn Hawke, and a killer beat from Eytan Tobin, who joins the Fractal Fantasy bill Friday night. In addition I've got a remix of Keys N Krates who join the star studded lineup for RELIEF, tonight at Velvet Underground. As always you won't want to miss the epic amount of new music from our great, albeit aphotic, Canadians. Why No Neon Was Perfect For The Hoxton's Finale

Saturday night saw a funeral of sorts, as people piled into The Hoxton for the final time. Fittingly, the Hunter Siegel led party, No Neon, was tapped to send the iconic club into the abyss. Despite being the host to countless epic parties and superstar DJs, The Hoxton has become synonymous with No Neon. They've combined to create utterly iconic images, showing the world the passion Toronto has for not only its Dark Plur host, but its numerous guests (AC Slater, Drezo, Dr. Fresch, Joyryde and others). No Neon has traveled, but its home will forever remain The Hoxton.

Of all the shows I've been to at The Hoxton, it's always No Neon that best illustrates what the 69 Bathurst venue had to offer. I'll always remember it for its tight, community feel as well as the unmistakable, rachet/lit party nature. What separates The Hoxton from the other venues I've been to is the closeness of the crowd and DJ; the connection and reciprocal energy sharing from DJ to crowd and back again is unparalleled. The stage was always packed with not only that night's DJs, there to support their peers, but others not playing that night, who couldn't help but take in the atmosphere.

This was only amplified when, after last call, The Hoxton's staff would join the hype crew on stage, giving back to the crowd, not just with their injection of energy but often pouring alcohol into their mouths. Ever since the party ended after 40+ minutes of encores, I've had perhaps the most iconic image of The Hoxton burnt into my head (the photo above): an overcrowded stage with Hunter in the middle commanding the decks, book-ended by Stephen Kazumi and two girls on either end of the yellow DJ table. Below I'll dive further into the night itself, with a chronological breakdown of events.

The night was billed as a Hunter Siegel open to close set, and that's essentially how it happened, although he did have help from a number of special guests. With the headliner also acting as the opener, people showed up early, sending the line outside around the corner shortly after 10 PM. It was noted by several people in line that it was especially dark, both because nearly everyone was wearing all black, and The Hoxton's neon sign was not lit. Whether this was done in light of it being a No Neon event inside or otherwise (it was not on for Joyryde the weekend prior), it seemed fitting.

Once inside I was greeted by countless familiar faces, both known acquaintances and unnamed revelers whom I had unknowingly partied with before. The scene was bittersweet, knowing that this would be my last time in such comfortable confines. The music in the early going was also easy and familiar, Hunter coming on the mic to say "I'm taking it easy right now cause we've got a lot left." The first few tracks I can recall include SNBRN and Sevenn's "What You Need" mixed into Hunter's "Bootleg Beat Control," shortly followed by his Wax Motif collab "All Night Man." Sometime later, after greeting more friends, Hunter dropped more of my favourite tracks including Wax Motif's "Krush Groove," and Gesaffelstein's "Control Movement" into the crazy good collab "OTF," which was birthed at No Neon early last year. It was at this point that I got close to the front of the stage, the floor felt like it was going to fall out from under us, and I began taking video after video (all on my Twitter, starting here).

Before the night began, Hunter tweeted about having "entirely new 6hrs" and while he proceeded to play a hell of a lot of new material, including his forthcoming remix of Grandtheft's "Easy Go," he also treated us to an onslaught of nostalgia. At once point he went from Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," to DJ Snake's "New Slaves," to RL Grime's "Love Sosa" and Rusko's "Woo Boost."

Being so close to the front, I noticed my favourite spot at the left side of the stage was open and proceeded to take a couple videos that I hope encapsulate the connection between DJ and crowd, which made it my favourite spot to take in events at The Hoxton. While the view is occasionally obstructed by photographers, there is no better way to take in the interaction between DJ and crowd. The two videos (here and here) show the peak of Hunter's set before the special guests came out.

Hunter was joined on stage by Grandtheft, Sleepy Tom, Omar LinX, Zeds Dead and Keys N Krates. There was a lot of back to back action as Grandtheft dropped Gesaffelstein's "Pursuit," Sleepy Tom with Cesqeaux's "The Dopest," then Grandtheft again with Skepta's "Shutdown," to which Hunter clapped back with Klaxx's "Dead," which lead into the following video, in turn leading into Grandtheft's "Flying." Things started to get foggy for me following this, perhaps the party was getting too lit for me to handle. I also stopped tweeting for more than 30 mins, maybe because my phone was about to die.

By this time the crowd was starting to thin out, however I had promised myself I'd stay till the bitter end, wanting to see the lights come on one last time, wondering what the last track to come out of The Hoxton's speakers would be. Before the seemingly endless encores and outpouring of love from both the fans and the DJs, I was able to capture a couple more videos (here and here). Both came before 3AM while the final track, Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold," was dropped at approximately 4:35. Despite continued chants of "One more song! One more song!" "We're going till 6!" "They're going to have to drag us out of here!" the plug was finally pulled and The Hoxton was essentially no more. I leave you the image and video below, both from Stephen Kazumi. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Four Favourites

Bump In The Hump is back tonight with the second of three special September Showcase episodes, live on 96.9 FM Radio Humber. Just as last week, I've got a number of my favourite tracks cue'd up for this week's episode in anticipation of two separate nights of partying. First and also our final track of the night comes from Frustra and NAHTE, "Flex." The latter will be performing alongside Hey! DW and James Redi at Supermarket for Home Brew. Saturday marks yet another installment of Hunter Siegel's always awesome No Neon series, this time featuring Los Angeles producer Joyryde, with support from locals VANRIP and Edan. Last year this event was held on the 20th of September, Hunter's birthday. This year Hunter delivered a gift of his own, a bootleg track that you can pick up for free on the No Neon soundcloud. In honour of the Dark Plur god himself and his now legendary No Neon nights, I've got three of his tracks back to back to back. Finally, we head back to the beginning, where for these September Showcase episodes I kick off the action with one of my favourite tracks of all time. Last week it was Stephen Walking's "Shark City," and this week it's the undeniably awesome and potent production of Botnek's "Through The Night." I had so much fun compiling and presenting last week's episode of Bump In The Hump and can safely say this week's will be just as exciting. These four tracks are the only ones that were not released in the past couple weeks, allowing Bump In The Hump to maintain its focus on brand new music. Back in November, Autoerotique joined Hunter Siegel on the decks for a surprise B2B at one of The Hoxton's infamous No Neon nights, this time featuring Ghastly and Dr. Fresch. That night I caught two forthcoming collaborations, Dr. Fresch & Jackal's "Netflix N Kill," and the highly anticipated Autoerotique, Hunter Siegel "OTF." What I Hope To Hear Tonight from Justin Jay and RYME

After arriving to late to see RYME at the last No Neon, I swore I wouldn't miss their next set, and today's the day I make good on that sentiment. They'll be alongside headliner Justin Jay as part of his Fantastic Voyage tour, along with support from fellow Toronto DJ Simon Jain. Apart from my well known love of RYME, I really started to get excited for tonight's show after Justin Jay dropped his incredibly awesome and joyful Late Nite Dub mix of his already engrossing track "Karma." I've found myself lost in his magnificent mix multiple times since he dropped this past Tuesday. Although it may not be the typical headlining track, I sure hope to hear it on The Hoxton's strong speaker set up. Lately I've been lamenting the lack of older, more classic tracks in sets I've heard recently. I understand why, people will always hunger for the next hot new ID, but there's no questioning the rush of endorphins that comes with a nostalgic track. That's why I hope to hear the first track I properly knew from Justin Jay, the ingeniously produced, club-thumper "Static."
It's crazy to think that it's been almost exactly 13 months to the day since Alison Wonderland released her debut album Run. I still listen to it quiet often but have found myself going to the remixes more often as of late. My favourite original, "Take It To Reality," just so happens to be remixed by tonight's Captain, Justin Jay. It's easy to feel lost at sea, with his tidal ebb and flowing mix, but I'll be the first to say I'd be comfortable with the Admiral at the helm.
Fresh off their BADLQQK Remixed EP, label runners RYME have bolstered their already overflowing crate of tracks with powerful productions like Slowbody's banging remix of KMRT "Flash Flash."
I'd really like to hear some Tiga tonight, and RYME always seem to feed into my insatiable hunger for the Montreal based Techno God. Perhaps it'll be their own remix of the ear-worm "Bugatti."
My passion for RYME's remix of Sia & The Weeknd's "Elastic Heart" is well known, and sadly it's no longer available (except in Electronic Impressions, here), which certainly adds to it's allure. But it's their remix of tastemaker Anna Lunoe's "Satisfaction," that I'm feeling more at the moment. Grab that free d/l.
Meech has gone so far as to insist that I arrive in time for their intro, so if it's anything like the opening of their set when I saw them last at the Night Bass party with AC Slater and fellow BADLQQKer Cosella, they ought to blow it out of the water. If I get one of the following, Fake Blood, Mr Oizo, Justice, or Boys Noize I'll be more than happy.

I'd be happy if RYME played a mix similar to their recent delivery for Euphoradio, or if Justin Jay were to play one similar to "Fantastic Voyage House Party Mix." Tonight is going to be 'lit' <- LOL

Destructo ft. Ty Dolla $ign & iLoveMakonen - 4 Real (Autoerotique Remix)

The production machine that is Autoerotique has once again graced us with a killer free download, this time a remix of Destructo, Ty Dolla $ign and iLoveMakonnen's "4 Real." Yesterday certainly seemed to be a big day for Autoerotique as he bolstered this release with promises of more collaborations with Hunter Siegel (2nd tweet) to come, as we wait in ever growing anticipation for "OTF."

Less than a month after the incredible back to back nights of B2B #NoNeon madness, in Miami and Toronto, Autoerotique and Hunter Siegel no doubt dropped this one amidst "an album or like a crazy set of songs" that Autoerotique is just sitting on. When a fan proposed that Autoerotique and Hunter Siegel should do a collab EP, his only response was the 'face without mouth' emoji, which we can only hope means that he has to stay tight-lipped about this very real possibility. Regardless, we can expect more of Autoerotique's trademark bass wubs and death defying darkness to arrive in the near future. Destructo ft. Ty Dolla $ign & iLoveMakonnen - 4 Real (Drezo Remix)

Drezo bring his inimitable style to Destructo's latest collab with Ty Dolla $ign and iLoveMakonnen, "4 Real." His incredible sub-harmonic manipulations are front and centre once again, relentlessly wrapped around the vocals for maximum intensity. I sure hope you've got a a good subwoofer when you're listening to this, I know when I heard it last weekend, at No Neon, the bass was enough to rattle my soul. My Musical March Madness

What I'm going to look like March 26

After a February free of shows, each of my weekends in March is fully booked with events, setting the stage for my craziest month ever. Starting this coming Saturday (5th), I'll finally be back in the club and out of the basement, losing my hearing, enjoying Chet Porter, Sigala and Autograf. If you've ever heard any of my Bump In The Hump episodes it's highly likely that you're familiar with my passion for Chet Porter's productions, so it should be no surprise that my musical hiatus comes to a screeching halt when he returns home to play the Hoxton. Whether it's his originals (Aluko River, Awakening or tbh ily) or his remixes (Over U, It's Strange or Do You Remember) his library is full of simply sparkling magical music that is sure to invoke euphoria. He's easily my most anticipated set of the whole month; what a way to start the madness that is my March. Expect his set to sound something like his mix for Too Future, below. CLICK HERE FOR THE FACEBOOK EVENT. The fact that Chet isn't the headliner makes the 5th that much more exciting. While I can't say I'm that familiar with Sigala, it's quite clear that love is their main inspiration for their music; 4 of the 5 tracks on their soundcloud account include love in the name. The only track that doesn't, is their forthcoming single with Imani and DJ Fresh, "Say You Do."  The headliner, Autograf, has been on my radar since early 2014, when they began dropping remixes of classics like Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Swedish House Mafia's "One." Since then, they've captured worldwide attention with their futuristic productions with massive originals "Dream" and "Running." They've even released the first two tracks from their forthcoming EP, Future Soup.  The following weekend (11th-13th), is the CDJ Show at The Hilton. While I'm still unsure about many of the details. I do know that it will feature seminars, roundtables and VIP style events. It will undoubtedly be a great opportunity to mingle with many of the elite DJs and behind the scenes brains. So far the highlights as I see them include Vekked and Brace's live turntable seminar, a massive exhibit hall with booths from Ableton to GoPro and KRK to zipDJ. CLICK HERE FOR THE FACEBOOK EVENT.

While the CDJ Show is going to be a busy weekend, it might not be as busy as the double dose of debauchery due for the 18th and 19th. Firstly the Friday night kicks off with Haywyre, San Holo and Grabbitz at the Hoxton. Monstercat's Grabbitz is slated to open up the night in the middle of his spring tour supporting his December album, Better With Time. 

The second part of this three-headed Monstercat beast is San Holo, who will be making his Toronto debut. Expect to hear a full compliment of his now infamous Don't Touch The Classics series, which features "The Next Episode," "Lose Yourself" and "In Da Club." Combined with his swirling and sparkling originals and his bitbird label, there aught to be no shortage of awesomeness in his time on the decks. I can only hope that it somewhat resembles his mix for Annie Nightingale. Finally, the headliner, Haywyre hits the Hoxton stage in support of his masterpiece, Two Fold Pt. 2. Expect his unique live performance to showcase his unbelievable artistic ability. EVENT INFO HERE.While following up that finely curated lineup is incredibly difficult, Hunter Siegel's No Neon night is set to return the following night (19th) complete with locals Booshay, RYME and Autoerotique with the deep and dark Drezo making his No Neon debut. Booshay is quickly making a name for himself with his ever growing list of free downloads, including his latest "Rave Weapon." Veteran duo RYME are always primed and ready to go. Their vast musical knowledge and mixing skill make them some of the best opening acts you could ask for. Expect them to have their set loaded with exclusives from their BADLQQK label. As a matter of fact they just released their own remix to Sinden's "Step Back." There is no one out there that can rival the sheer amount of new bass blasting tracks that Autoerotique is pumping out. It seems like he's been dropping at least one new track per week for months now. Fresh off his Kids Don't Care EP release, you can expect to hear those and more exclusive new content, including his forthcoming collab with Hunter Siegel "On The Floor."  The only out of town DJ, Drezo, has been busting his way into playlists and mixes alike, with remixes of Snails, Jackal, Lil Wayne and Dr. Dre and massive originals "Guap" and "Heaven." Expect the No Neon aesthetic to reach its darkest when Drezo drops his Drowning Pools, "Bodies" remix. Tickets are sure to go fast for this fan favourite, find the link and more on the Facebook event page.  The last weekend, is the one that I've had tickets the longest for. Keys N Krates make their triumphant return to their hometown following the massive Midnite Mass tour. The energy of their live show is incredibly infectious. Each time I've seen them they've impressed me more and more. There's no doubt in my mind that their homecoming performance will amaze. Expect some special surprises in store as the trio have been tight-lipped and have yet to announce any supporting acts. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Jackal x Dr. Fresch - Netflix N Kill

After months of teasing it in live sets, the Jackal and Dr. Fresch collaboration, "Netflix N Kill" has finally been released, and will be premiered on this week's episode of Bump In The Hump on Radio Humber. After hearing it for the first time during one of Hunter Siegel's now infamous No Neon parties, I've been anxiously awaiting the inevitable annihilation of "Netflix N Kill." I was lucky enough to capture a video of Dr. Fresch dropping it amidst his utterly insane set from the aforementioned No Neon night.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Autoerotique - All I Need

As I've been saying for weeks now, Autoerotique is on some kind of crazy run producing nonstop. In the last month and half he's dropped 5 tracks, four of them free of charge. Add that to the collaboration with Hunter Siegel, that Hunter dropped at the most recent #NoNeon, and Autoerotique has at least one new track each week.

#NoNeon w/ Hunter Siegel, Ghastly & Dr. Fresch (Review)

Last night Hunter Siegel, and his final #NoNeon party of the year, shook the Hoxton to it's core and nearly brought it to its knees. I've never seen the Hoxton so busy so early, there was a massive line from as early as 11 and by the time I got in at 11:30 the club was already packed back to the door. I'm glad I arrived early because I'm sure the line was never better than the half hour I waited, and to my surprise Hunter took the stage right at midnight. Which apparently he does most of the time (although not at the last #NoNeon).

Regardless what time he went on you had to know, Emperor Palpatine, the Lord of DarkPLUR was going to deliver. Yesterday I speculated that there might be some B2B action, a live performance from Delaney Jane, or some new Hunter Siegel productions. Well, I was about half right, there was no B2B, and neither did Delaney Jane sing live, but she was there side by side with Hunter when he dropped "Still Waiting," as was Autoerotique who joined Hunter onstage when he dropped LYAOF. Best of all Hunter premiered his new collab with Autoerotique, video of which you can watch below.

#NoNeon - Hunter Siegel, Ghastly, Dr. Fresch and More

Tonight is the last of Hunter Siegel's epic #NoNeon parties hosted at the Hoxton. Each time Hunter and his crew do a great job of bringing in some of the hottest upcoming talent. It's going to be hard to top the last installment that featured "queen of the dark techno scene," Rezz and fellow Canadian star, Sleepy Tom. As you can see from the video below things were absolutely bonkers at the Hoxton, which must have been at capacity, if not over it.
Of course it would be difficult to compete with such a packed lineup and extra long night (4AM last call), but tonight's lineup with Ghastly, and Dr. Fresch might just come through. As much as Sleepy Tom and Rezz are amazing DJs and producers, I think that Ghastly and Dr. Fresch are more of a fit with Hunter Siegel, at least on a sonic level. Expect things to be dark, deep and mighty bouncy when these three hit the decks tonight.
