Enlightened Listening for March 1

Fridays never fail, and while last week was a tough one to follow, we're once again greeted with a solid selection of new releases. For this edition of Enlightened Listening, I've opted to focus on single tracks, despite a number of the tracks selected appearing on larger releases. Stream and read below.

Barry & Gibbs - I Feel Your Love
The duo's run of originals continues with a brilliant, sample-driven party starter. Groove ready!

KH - Only Human
Kieran Hebdan (aka Four Tet) has been rinsing this Nelly Furtado 'remix' for quite some time. Incredibly hypnotic, it's sure to turn any dance-floor into a tribal rave ritual.

Tennyson - Melonpan
The awe-inspiring genius of Luke & Tess is once again on full display, spinning their way into our hearts with this beyond beautiful number. A truly sublime soundscape.

DROELOE - Only Be Me (Duskus Remix)
The kind of track that warms the cockles of your heart. Reassuring resplendence. My favourite track of the bunch, it is incredibly accessible yet not so drenched in pop that it becomes one of the masses.

Sébastian Léger - Sablier
Fluttery and floating, Seb stays high in the sky with this one, offering up another progressive piece.

Donae'o ft. Belly - Chalice (Chase & Status Remix)
These four minutes fly along, as Chase & Status built a brilliant bed for Donae'o and Belly to do their work. Killer, ominous vibes.

Skene Music - Almost Acid
Seems John has wiped his Soundcloud and Spotify catalogs clean, perhaps with acid? Sorry. If this is his new avenue, I'm totally here for it as the progression and movement here is sick. Almost as sick as the drops, ugh.

Heviicide & Circuit FreaQ - Headbanger
Bursting at the seams, this is one wild number. Electric and explosive, of course it lives up to its name.

Tony Romera - Grimey
Mean and menacing, do not take Tony Romera lightly. He comes at you from every angle: tying your shoes together, hitting you over the head with a steel chair and punching your kidneys, all at the same time.

The Trammps - Disco Inferno (Barry & Gibbs Club Edit)

I almost fell out of my bed as I opened my phone and found that disco providing duo Barry & Gibbs had just released an edit of The Trammps' 1976 classic "Disco Inferno." Last year their edit of Michael Jackson's "Working Day & Night" broke into the 19th spot in my top 100 tracks of the year countdown (see here), however until March's original "Dancing To A Love Song," we hadn't heard anything new from them. This return welcomes another extended and warm groove dance session that is sure to showcase the smoothest of boogie bumps and disco jumps. The mixing is masterful, easy to enjoy, and only amplifies the already red hot sweeps of the original. Michael Jackson - Working Day & Night (Barry & Gibbs Edit)

Over the last month or so I've been digging back through some classic disco edits, and I feel like its almost spoiled me for the darker side of music. I find I'm constantly craving the dope of disco grooves and funky fat beats. So it should come as no surprise that this edit from Barry & Gibbs really got me going. Of course whenever you're working with the King of Pop you've got a great foundation, and boy did Barry & Gibbs take advantage of that.

"Working Day & Night" is already a strong start, growing out of Jackson's budding friendship with Quincy Jones. But it's the drawn out, dance all day and night, groove that makes this such a sublime edit. Barry & Gibbs get down and dirty filling up the funk quota almost immediately, then proceed to bring in all the elements that made the original so satisfying. Heavenly horns, fluttering guitar riffs, and the kind of percussion that calls for clapping along, this edit brings it all together and packages it perfectly around the King. Even their use of Michael's unique vocal style succeeds in every way, as though this were as it was originally intended. I know that may be seen as blasphemous, comparing it to the original, but damn, I can't say enough about how well this edit has been constructed.
